Veteran Boston journalist John Henning dies

Veteran Boston radio and television reporter and commentator John Henning has died.  Henning passed away Wednesday night.  He was 73.

Henning covered politics, business and state government and most recently provided on-air political analysis and commentary on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 and WBZ-TV.

He often worked with WBZ political commentator Jon Keller for WBZ Radio's "Eye on Politics."

Henning was the senior political correspondent for WBZ-TV until 2003. Prior to joining the station in 1981, he was an anchor and reporter for Channels 5 and 7.  He also worked as a news and sports reporter for Channel 2.

Henning covered numerous citywide, statewide and national elections and was the recipient of many awards for his reporting and analysis.

In 1995, Henning received the Governor's Award for Excellence in News Reporting from the Boston/New England Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Henning received a master's degree in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University and a bachelor's degree in English and Political Science from Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Henning died at Mass General from complications after a long illness.

He is survived by two sons, Gregory and Matthew and his brother, Daniel Henning Jr., who played professional football and is currently the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins.
