WBZ CARES

WBZ Cares is our public service initiative focused on local non-profit entities, events, and causes. Each month WBZ NewsRadio 1030 will select an organization to profile.

Through news stories, public service announcements and guest appearances on NightSide with Dan Rea, we will show the hard work and dedication of our local charities.

WBZ NewsRadio has been a trusted voice in New England for more than 90 years and we would like to work with our listeners to improve the lives of New Englanders in need.

If you would like your charity to be considered, please send us an email.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030 is proud to support One Summit, an organization aimed at helping childhood cancer patients build courage, self-confidence, and resilience through experiential learning and mentorship with a U.S. Navy SEAL. Their experiential learning takes place in the form of indoor rock climbing, at a Climb for Courage.

About One Summit

Founded by Adam La Reau in 2013, One Summit grew as an inspiration stemmed from his experiences as a Navy SEAL, coupled with his mother’s fight against breast cancer. He began volunteering with cancer organizations after his mother lost her battle to cancer in 2004.
Adam says “I met a lot of women just like my mother that were just amazingly tough, strong, mentally and physically, and just inspired others.” He continued, “I also saw a lot of young kids battling cancer that didn’t necessarily have the skills to conquer this disease on their own. I thought it was an unfair fight and I wanted to even the odds.” His experiences in the military led him to believe there was an opportunity for the Navy SEALs to help these kids. Adam says “I served with a lot of amazing men who were incredibly heroic, courageous and resilient.” He recognized the skills embedded in the SEALs were the skills the kids needed to battle this debilitating disease. He decided to bring these two worlds together and create One Summit.

Their Program

Experimental Learning with Navy SEALs
One Summit believes learning by doing is the most effective way of gaining and sustaining fundamental skills. Experiential Learning produces demonstrable mindset shifts, which is paramount in helping children gain the resilience necessary to battle cancer.

Story Telling
Autobiographical Storytelling can have a lasting impact on a person’s psychological and physical health. Resilience is strengthened by recognizing that everyone is an expert in their own lives and all have something to share with others.  Through their  “Stories Summit,” an online platform for story sharing allowing families of pediatric cancer patients to share their stories as a means of building connectivity and resilience and enhancing their emotional well-being overall.

Community Engagement
One Summit hosts community events throughout the year to build a safe space for children and families to come together, have fun, and be part of a caring community. These families share the commonality of fighting a deadly disease. However, they build a space where kids can be kids, and the parents can connect, share experiences, and inspire one another.

 Their Mission

To help childhood cancer patients build courage, self-confidence, and resilience through experiential learning and mentorship with a U.S. Navy SEAL. No family fights pediatric cancer alone.
