Not all hot dogs are created equally, especially when it comes to vegetarian dogs. Made with no meat products, these veggie dogs have come a long way in recent years. Gone are the days when the taste of vegetarian foods would be dry and flavorless. Today, the vegetarian selections are filled with healthy ingredients like soy, protein and fresh vegetables. Here are some of the city's best places to go for a delicious tasting vegetarian hot dog.

Spike's Junkyard Dogs
108 Brighton Ave.
Allston, MA 02134
(617) 254-7700

It's not exactly where you might think you would actually find a vegetarian hot dog, but Spike's Junkyard Dogs does it well. Here, they serve fat free veggie dogs that can be finished off with any topping of your choosing. Select from sauteed onions, American cheese, pickles and barbecue sauce to traditional toppings like ketchup, mustard and relish. This hot dog is served on the super soft baked hot dog roll that Spike's is so well known for.

Boston Hot Dog Company
60 Washington St.
Salem, MA 01970

Venture just north of the city to Salem to Boston Hot Dog Company for a tasty selection of veggie dogs. Here, you can choose from four different flavors (smoked apple and sage, Mexican chipotle, kielbasa and sweet Italian). Each is served on a hot grilled buttery roll and can be topped with everything from baked beans and cheese sauce to celery salt and fresh diced tomatoes. Even better, the dogs here can be steamed or grilled.

The Lower Depths Tap Room
476 Commonwealth Ave.
Boston, MA 02115
(617) 266-6662

If you're located near Fenway Park, you have to have a great selection of hot dogs on the menu, and The Lower Depths Tap Room has just that. This Kenmore Square pub serves up one of the city's biggest selections of dogs. The veggie dog here is served on a warm buttered New England style (split down the middle) bun. Top it all off with any creative topping from habanero aioli, pickled jalapenos to guacamole, "mackin cheese" or even peanut butter. Pair it up with a local microbrew or one of their more than 150 beers on tap.

You might not expect to find great veggie options at a local cinema, but the Kendall Square Cinema has set out to change your thinking.
