Boston is quickly becoming the hub for the grassroots of fashion, and there's no better time to celebrate it than during Boston Fashion Week from October 5-11, 2014. But even before Boston's hottest models hit the runway in the latest designs, learn about the past, future and business of fashion at these events. From Hollywood to science and nature, fashion designers draw inspiration from everywhere. Now is the time to hear these incredible stories right here in the hub.

Date: Sept. 8 – Nov. 30, 2014Prepare for Boston's biggest week of fashion by seeking inspiration at the "Yolanda" exhibit in Waltham. Yolanda Cellucci's life as Boston's most notable fashion icon and dress designer began as a true rags-to-riches story of entrepreneurship and dedication. The exhibit shares her remarkable story and showcases some pieces from her incredible collection of designer garments, jewelry and headpieces. Waltham's Charles River Museum of Industry is the perfect place for this exhibit as Yolanda also owned her legendary shop in Waltham from 1967-2009. Admission to the exhibit is $10.

Another perfect venue to prep for Boston Fashion Week is the Museum of Fine Arts. The museum has a wonderful permanent collection of gems and jewelry, but this fall, fashion enthusiasts are in for a treat. The "Hollywood Glamour" exhibit recently opened and displays garments worn my film icons such as Gloria Swanson, Anna May Wong, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Mae West and Joan Crawford. The exhibit includes both costumes from their various roles and red carpet gowns from an era that was truly the "golden age of glamour."

Let's get down to the business of fashion. Who determines what the next trends are and how do stores go about making these trends available to customers? The Fashion Group International Boston will discuss this and more at its next Breakfast Series session. The event will feature a diverse panel of experts that includes: Daniel Kramer, VP of Neiman Marcus; Leslee Shupe, Owner of Serenella-Boston; Tara Foley, Owner of Follain; and Carolina Tejedor Meyers, Owner of Caramelo. Each panelist will discuss his or her role in the buying process, and what the retail market is like in Boston and beyond. Head to Boston's Financial District to the trendy Langham Hotel to catch a free fashion show. Jenny French, a recent alum from the School of Fashion Design, will be showcasing her Fall/Winter 2014 collection to kickoff the season. Jenny French is a self-labeled "underground fashion artist" that designs lingerie-inspired garments with a vintage feel. While the show is free, attendees are highly recommended to call ahead to reserve a seat.

Just days before Boston Fashion Week officially starts, Descience is hosting a Research on the Runway event at MIT to kick off the festivities. Descience focuses on the merging of art and science in the field of fashion design. The show will bring to the table fashion designers that are specifically inspired by science and technology. They will showcase their latest works and discuss how science has impacted their work. The event will also feature videos and a networking session. There's a suggested donation at the door of $10.
