The Open Studios & Small Wonders events go hand in hand annually for the Artists Group of Charlestown. For the first weekend, the studios open to the public and let everyone see how the artists within work. This is a great time to become familiar with local artists and perhaps arrange to get a piece from one or more of them. The following weekend is a juried exhibition that involves only small pieces of artwork.

"The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)" is a celebration of what else but musicals. It drags the typical musical through the mud, but in a way that people who enjoy the genre will appreciate. Of course, it is a musical itself, five of them in fact, and has a great lineup of songs. Each of the small musicals included in this show openly mocks and pays tribute to the works of specific playwrights so viewers can expect everything from the macabre to the outrageously exuberant.

This exhibit from the ICA is all about how sculpture has changed over the past few decades across borders and mediums. It has about 50 pieces from more than 30 artists who contributed everything from a piece that looks like uncooked Top Ramen to what can only be described as the lair of a Tolkien super spider. The amazing use of fiber to create representative works of art is present throughout this exhibit. Come be surprised at what an artist can do with the many forms of fiber.

Handmade for the Homeless is a community-wide event that spans as far as its participants. It involves using artistic skills in crocheting, knitting or sewing to create a warm article of clothing for someone in need. These articles particularly include hats, scarves and gloves. However, anything from a sock to a sweater is welcome. Just think of what keeps someone warm in winter and Boston's homeless population needs it. The library is currently collecting for sizes infant to adult.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is host to an amazing collection of sketches drawn by Italian Renaissance sculptors. On December 13, it is inviting people to come to the museum early to get a special tour of the exhibit with added insights into its pieces. It is a member event, but well worth the effort for those who love greats like Donatello and Michelangelo. Who doesn't?
