Boston's Best Upcoming Museum Exhibits

While Boston has plenty of museums to chose from, things would quickly get stale for museum goers if new exhibitions were not commonplace. Temporary and even new permanent exhibits pop up all the time in Boston. Among the latest are exciting looks at humanity and science. Whether guests are looking for something to educate or something to entertain, there are some great options coming up in Boston.

This is a great exhibit for anyone looking for a chance to see one of the great masters. The Museum of Fine Arts is borrowing some Leonardo da Vinci sketches for an exhibit filled with fine examples of his skill and talent. Among them are a recently discovered sketches including a self-portrait as well as a study for an angel that is the centerpiece of the collection. There are 29 drawings and one manuscript altogether. This is a rare treat for any art fan. There is comparatively little time to see all of these pieces in one place so get in soon.

Islands presents a unique experience to see the evolution of species with little interference from humankind. It was an archipelago that helped Charles Darwin see what he needed to embark on his life's work. The Harvard Museum of Natural History has collected fossils, insects and many other specimens to create an exhibit dedicated to the spectacular life that isolated islands produce. This museum already has some of the best biological exhibits in town so be sure to plan a full day for enjoying this exhibit and the other collections.

Freedom Rising is all about the rise of the African American author in the United States. Because slaves and even free African Americans were at best not encouraged and at worst forbidden to read or write. Nonetheless a few people were given the opportunity to read and write or did so in secrecy. An even smaller number of these individuals would go on to publish their work. This exhibit is all about those heroes in American literature from Boston's own Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass.

Humpback whales are a species dear to the heart of Massachusetts. Every year residents and visitors embark on whale watches to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Animals Without Passports follows these mammals through their 3,000-mile annual journey from the northern Atlantic Ocean to the warm waters of the Caribbean. While this is a small exhibit, it is a good opportunity for children and adults to learn about the issues whales face from the ocean and from the people who damage it.
