Boston's Best Mother's Day Events For 2013

Boston does not disappoint when it comes to Mother's Day activities. Cruise around the harbor, participate in a 5K or enjoy a cultural afternoon at the museum. There's plenty to do with mom on May 12th; here are some options to consider.

Odyssey Cruises is offering three Mother's Day cruises on board the Odyssey Boston. Live music is included as well as a DJ, dancing and an air of sophistication throughout the day. Mothers receive a flower, and all adults get a glass or champagne or a mimosa upon boarding. Activities for kids include goodie bags, an ice cream sundae bar and a balloon artist. Soft drinks are provided for children.

Known as "New York's original one-ring circus," the Big Apple Circus offers a brand new show in 2013 called Legendarium. Featuring daredevils and performance artists seemingly plucked from the past, this amazing show is sure to wow folks of all ages. Seats are strategically placed no more than 50 feet away from the performers. Continental brunch on Mother's Day is at 10 a.m., in the Big Top Lounge, where families can meet some of the world-class circus artists. It's followed by the show, which starts at 11 a.m.

Early risers can participate in a morning walk beginning at Fields Corner in Dorchester to benefit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. The institute was founded in 1996 by Louis D. Brown's parents after his violent death on the streets of Boston, and has become a source of help, hope and inspiration to the community. The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute offers support to victims of violence, as well as training programs for police and other government systems. The 17th-annual 3.6 mile walk raises funds and awareness of this great charity. Walkers are invited to participate in all or part of the route through the Town Field Park area of Dorchester.

The internationally-renowned Dress for Success recognizes that disadvantaged women want to work and support themselves economically. The organization provides professional attire, career counseling and a support network to help women become self-sufficient. The 5K walk is held, rain or shine, on Mother's Day weekend in the Castle Island area of South Boston and is designed to promote an active lifestyle while raising funds for Dress for Success. Join in this great cause to help local moms gain financial independence.

An afternoon of New England art and music awaits mom at the Edward and Nancy Roberts Family Gallery at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition, entitled "Art of the White Mountains," includes stunning paintings of New Hampshire's famous peaks, Franconia, the Presidential ranges, and of course, Mount Washington. Painters featured include Doughty, Cole, Homer and Inness. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the North County Chamber Players, featuring Amy Beach, Aaron Copland and Randall Thompson.
