Boston's Best Bars To Get Local Beer

The phrase "support local" has gained more and more steam over the years, with many folks going out of their way to frequent local businesses and purchase local goods whenever the opportunity arises. That sensibility also applies to the ever-growing and increasingly popular craft brewing industry, with many city beer connoisseurs doing their best to grab local brews at their hometown pubs. Here are just five of the best bars to get in your local beer fix.

Quantity is where it's at here at Bukowski Tavern, a Back Bay-area pub that takes its name from the notoriously booze-addled, alcoholic writer. This Dalton Street joint is practically stocked to the gills with a bevy of local beers from across Boston and the greater New England area. Indeed, the staff here at Bukowski Tavern takes its beer and spirits very seriously, and can advise even the most uncertain or curious beer taster as to which brew might best dazzle their taste buds.

Located not too far away from Bukowski Tavern over in Kenmore Square on Commonwealth Avenue is The Lower Depths, a cash-only joint that crowds up fast — particularly on game days or during special events in the Back Bay. But any wait is worth it with the bar's wide selection of local, craft brews and simple, yet effectively filling bar food. Burgers, tots and hot dogs make up most of the menu here, making it a perfect idea to wash down this stick-to-your-ribs fare with some ice cold, refreshing local beer.

Heading to the Waterfront for our next joint, we elevate things a wee bit for Row 34, a new American restaurant that offers the discriminating diner their choice of local craft beers alongside an extensive menu of fine, fresh seafood dishes. Row 34 also makes good in the decor department, presenting a cool, modern look which nevertheless manages to be an inviting place for both dates and friends alike to gather and enjoy some great food and drink.

They don't call it Drink for nothing, as this South Boston spot serves up more brands of local beer than you can shake a stick at. Drink's resident mixologists are super knowledgeable in their craft, possessing all of the required knowledge to make every new beer drinker feel at home with the selection. Add to this an even more impressive selection of appetizers, dinner and dessert dishes, and you have one surefire South Boston destination.

Stoddard's Fine Food & Ale

Boston, MA 02111

Whereas many of the spots covered in this list so far have managed to boast selection and variety as their main selling points, when it comes to local craft beer, Stoddard's Fine Food & Ale is more concerned with the unique and specialized nature of its local beer menu, slimming down its choices to a few fine examples of home brew. There's certainly something to be said about quality, of course, as Stoddard's forgoes quantity in its search for fine food from scratch — check out the delicious chicken pot pie, for example — and great craft beer.
