Boston Area's Best Cover Bands

It's very common for bars and pubs to book cover bands for live music, yet it takes a very special sort of cover band to stand out from the crowd. Whether it's a unique theme or take on a classic sound or re-imagining a particular band's pedigree altogether, the very best cover bands are adept at keeping a crowd in the palm of their hand and keeping them there until the very last note echoes from the stage. Here are five of Boston's best cover bands.

Spike the Punch brings the party and rocks the house down with its infectious, high-energy set of rock classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s. This Boston cover band balances its schedule between Friday night local shows and Saturday afternoon weddings under its "formal" title of Men In Black. The North Shore and Faneuil Hall areas are the band's specialty, but both Men In Black and Spike the Punch welcome gig requests from any and all across Boston.

The Beatles haven't been one of the most beloved bands of the past 40-plus years for nothing, with plenty of cover bands having sprouted up in the decades since The Fab Four's first United States invasion. Beatlejuice and Friends has maintained its reputation as one of New England's absolute best Beatles tributes. Former Boston frontman Brad Delp contributed vocals to the group before his untimely, tragic death, but the legacy of Beatlejuice lives on. It lends its love of the original Beatles material to these covers, making it one of the best bands in the business.

Led Zeppelin

The mighty Led Zeppelin may be gone, but it is certainly not forgotten in the hearts of the members of Black Dog, one of the Boston area's most beloved and devoted Led Zeppelin cover bands. Pro musicianship and attention to creative details set Black Dog apart from cover bands who are simply out to replicate the visual aesthetic of a particular band. The members of Black Dog are all at the top of their instrumental game, even offering bass and guitar lessons on their website. Zeppelin classics like "Heartbreaker," "Whole Lotta Love" and "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" all make regular appearances on the band's set, making Black Dog one of the closest approximations of Led Zeppelin here in Boston.

Red Square make the dance floor its priority whenever it plays any of Boston's numerous clubs and bars. This Boston cover band ensures fun is the name of the game as it covers everything from Lady Gaga and Green Day to Billy Joel and Madonna. Red Square mainly does classic pop hits, standards and Top 40 jams rather than mimicking one particular artist or style, and as such has maintained a wide fan base everywhere it plays. This accessibility makes the band able to play anywhere and please anyone, whether it's a crowded bar, main stage or wedding party, and this also makes Red Square a leading name in the cover band game.

Tragedy
Disco, Heavy Metal, Bee Gees, Mash-Ups
www.letsmaketragedyhappen.com

Do disco and heavy metal sound like a match made in heaven? Well then Boston's infamous cover mash-up band Tragedy is a dream come true, having first established itself as a heavy metal tribute to the Bee Gees. Time has seen Tragedy expand its style to include metalized mash-up covers of everything from The Weather Girls ("It's Raining Men") and Slayer ("Raining Blood") to KC and the Sunshine Band and, of course, those glorious Bee Gees. It's simply a show which must be seen to be believed, as evidenced by the band's in-demand status at heavy metal festivals throughout Europe and beyond...including a UK tour this spring.
