Biking can be a leisurely ride around the city to see the wonderful historic sites or a more adventurous ride outside the city limits to experience the beauty of the surrounding area. There are bike lanes in the city and bike trails through many of the rural surrounding suburbs of Boston. Renting a bike is quite a simple task and some places offer a wide variety of bikes from which to choose. There are traditional city bikes and also mountain bikes available for rougher terrain.

The bike stations are readily and conveniently accessible at sidewalk sites around the city. There are several options for rental at Hubway bike including an annual membership, monthly membership, 72-hour pass or 24-hour pass. Membership includes unlimited trips up to 30 minutes each. Longer rides trigger additional fees. Renters can pick up a bike at any Subway station and return it at the same or any other station around the city. Rent a bike and tour the city, get across town to a meeting or take a leisurely ride along the Charles River then return the bike to a nearby bike dock.

The bike tours each cover 10 to 12-miles. The standard Urban AdvenTours bike rental is a Kona Drew Boston hybrid, but other more technical bikes are available as well. Bike rentals can be picked up at the shop in the historic North End or can be delivered by the BioBus to area hotels and events. Urban AdvenTours is a locally owned, independent green company and even the BioBus is eco-friendly as it runs on recycled vegetable oil. The company's message is to ride bikes to "burn calories, not carbon."

The bike rental model is a 7-speed city bike by Jamis called the Commuter, and is a great fit for those 5'3" and taller. The rental bikes have flat resistant tubes and tires and a convenient rear basket to carry personal items. This company offers a 24-hour rental fee of $30 and does not have any membership requirement. There are special rates for 5-day or more rentals and also for groups of 5 or more riders.
