Customer favorites include indulgences like banana-stuffed French toast covered in berries and Empire Eggs served poached over potato pancakes, smoked salmon and spinach, with Hollandaise sauce on top. Lines at Zaftigs on the weekends are long and the prices aren’t discount, but the free bagel chips with cream cheese while you wait almost make up for it. Serving breakfast 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
Martin's Coffee Shop
Best described as a small, laid back greasy spoon. Their large menu includes sections dedicated to different varieties of eggs benedict and omelettes, various flavors of pancakes and French toast, and breakfast meats that include steak tips and linguica sausage. Regulars swear by their coffee. Serving breakfast until 4 p.m. weekdays, 3 p.m. weekends. CASH only.
Deluxe Town Diner
If pancakes are your thing, this may be the place for you. Sour cream flapjacks, sweet potato pancakes, blue cornmeal pancakes and jonnycakes are among their much-raved-about varieties. Challah French toast and corned beef hash highlight their non-pancake popular picks. Like any great breakfast place, expect a decent wait on the weekends – so try breakfast for dinner; they serve it ’til 10.
The Paramount (BEACON HILL)
The Paramount (SOUTH BOSTON)
You’re sure to find a line outside this Beacon Hill neighborhood hotspot. The menu is a small variety of pretty standard selections, but it’s well-executed. You can order huge portions of fresh fruit to top your fruit-filled pancakes, Texas toast or Belgian waffle. The dining experience is a bit different; you order cafeteria-style in back, and can’t sit until you have your food. Serving breakfast daily until 4:30 p.m.
Mike's City Diner
As seen on the Food Networks’ popular “Diner’s Drive-Ins and Dives”, huge portions of greasy breakfast fare at reasonable prices are Mike’s claim to fame. Regulars rave about their home fries, or if you prefer they’ll actually serve you a side of grits. Serving breakfast 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. CASH only.
