Sure the calendar says spring but as of this writing, my ice-dam prevention roof wires (that haven’t stopped ice dams on the ceiling three years running) are still abuzz with current, these hands of mine are sandpaper-rough and there’s nary a thought of venturing out to check the gas stove battered by weather on the backyard deck.  The snow has finally melted enough that if I stare out the back window I can make out the vestiges of my once glorious cooking machine.  Thankfully, the old girl is still standing after the winter of our discontent but it (as is the case with its owner) appears far from burger ready.

Fifty four winters for me now and for some reason this one ranks as one of my least favorite.  We had a real honest to goodness blizzard but we’ve had them before and many have been worse.  It’s been chilling but not the coldest season on record.  So what gives?  It very well could be the fact that the Red Sox stunk so badly last summer that there’s hardly a mention of spring training in the papers or on talk shows.  I say ENOUGH ALREADY with boring details about the football draft or those pesky college brackets that I’ll never understand.  It’s time for baseball, isn’t it?  Or is Fenway forever snow covered?

The other evening I was master of ceremonies for a gala charity auction at a gorgeous spot, The Granite Links Golf Resort high above the expressway overlooking the Boston skyline.  Walking (in tuxedo) the short distance from my car to the lobby felt like a stroll Admiral Perry might have taken.  A biting wind chill factor, snow encrusted golf course and foot long icicles hanging from the glorious eaves of the club.  This would make some sense in mid-February or even the first of March.  But this close to April?  I refuse to let up and cut Mother Nature any slack.

I realize April Fool’s Day is upon us and within weeks the weathermen will be warning of drought, sunburns and oppressive humidity.  But how about a little tease to restore our faith?  A red robin or a high of 50 or so would be awfully nice.

For now I’ve resorted to keeping warm with the help of a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, flannel jammies and dandelion dreams.  I never thought I’d be thrilled to see dandelions.

We had quite a snow event of course last weekend.  Dubbed ‘Nemo’ by the Weather Channel outfit, the blustery blizzard dumped more than two feet of windswept snow on most of the region.  Having assumed it to be an acronym, I spent more time than necessary trying to decipher the Nemo code.  “New England Media Opportunity” and “Now Everyone, Move to Orlando!” were my frontrunners.  How relieved I was to discover Nemo to be nothing more than the name of a Pixar-generated fish.  Apologies are in order to the captain of the Nautilus.

In any event, the storm generated a lot of nastiness and ominous declarations to STAY OFF THE ROAD OR ELSE!  Imagine being the poor wretch tossed in a Massachusetts correctional institution for a full year for not heeding the governor’s driving ban?  “Hey *$%#^#, what the &*#$%@ you in for…murder, car jacking, armed robbery?  Answer me you %$*(@#!”  “Eh, nope sir, I was late leaving CVS after picking up baby formula and kinda lost track of time. (Insert very nervous laughter).  Can you believe my luck?”  (More nervous laughter)

You know the rest of the story of the weekend because you lived it.  As did I broadcasting ten hours on the air talking to dozens of callers who found themselves without power or any open Dunkin’ Donuts establishment.  Yes, we had ourselves a pretty impressive shutdown.

But through it all – the ferocious tides, frigid temperatures, biting winds and obnoxious TV STORM OF THE CENTURY graphics, there were faith restoring moments.  Stories of people stepping up to do the decent thing while supporting others in need.  Kudos to the plow drivers, police, fire, EMT and emergency personnel, the power company crews and hospital teams, the lonely gas station attendants and convenience store owners who stayed at their posts.  Most people were lucky enough to be home or in hotels, snug cozy and out of danger.  Thanks to those who worked their shifts and earned their pay.

Here’s one quick story of support that I wanted to let you know about.  I appreciate my producer and friend Casey O’Donnell who fields calls for my show and runs the tightest board in talk radio.  Shortly before dawn, he put a call from a sweet little lady in Auburn who identified herself as disabled.  She was unable to reach the fellow who normally plowed her driveway.  Understandable given the wild conditions out there.  She expressed frustration and fear over this and who could blame her?  Still the caller was pleasant and accepting of the situation unlike a few callers who were harshly critical that during the height of the massive storm they didn’t plow their streets yet.  My caller remained poised and collected insisting that she was willing to pay whatever it might cost to remove the snow later that morning.  It was obvious that just connecting with us on the air helped her rest easier.  Conversation with another, even a stranger on the radio, so often helps to dial down the stress.  As she and I were about to wrap up the call, my producer asked me through our in-studio intercom to have the lady remain on hold.  Casey lives near Auburn and told me he would work on finding a way to help this woman out.

I promptly put her on hold and went about my business, taking dozens more calls before ending the show to finally head out into the tundra for the long slow trek home.  It took me a while but I made it.  And the pillow never felt as welcoming.

I slept about six hours and awoke to find a text message that had been sent several hours earlier.  It was from Casey informing me that he had made several calls from the station and came up with a solution for the caller.  A friend of a friend who had been plowing non-stop since the snow began heard about the lady’s needs and took action.  The listener’s driveway was cleared soon after sunrise.  The kindhearted gentleman who performed the service refused to take the money she offered.  Nothing like a selfless act of kindness to add a bit of warmth to an otherwise frigid morning.  I don’t yet know the name for our knight with the shining snow plow.  But I’m certain he felt satisfied in helping her and most likely makes this kind of a thing a habit.

During rough times who among us doesn’t need a boost?  And when challenges occur, those who bring help and comfort remind us about the stuff between people that really matters.

So to Casey, his network of caring friends, and the great numbers of you who step up regularly to help out, I salute you.  As does one lovely little lady in Auburn who appreciates the support.

BOSTON (CBS) – John Gerah is outraged by what he found in the backyard of his Back Bay condo after the storm.

“I’m apoplectic,” he says. “When I saw this huge pile I thought I can’t shovel this. Have nowhere to put this snow.”

The snow was dumped over Gerah’s six-foot-high fence during the storm by someone from the back alley between Beacon and Marlborough Streets.

“It’s obvious someone took a back-end loader, and dumped snow from the alley way in my yard with complete disregard for what damage was going to occur,” he said.

He contacted the city several times, but with no proof of who dumped the snow, Gerah was told to file a claim.

Plows contracted by the city, as well as private businesses and condo associations were out clearing roads during the storm removing snow. City officials say they are expediting all storm related claims.

But Gerah says this isn’t soon enough. He fears if there is rain, the snow will melt and flood his first floor condo. He’s set up a sump pump and plans to bring in snow melters and pump it out on the back.

And he is determined to do all he can to find out who dumped the snow.

“Some plow dumped 150 yards of snow into my property and thinks they are getting away with it? They are not. It’s that simple,” he says.

NStar reported early Wednesday that 4,865 homes and businesses were without electricity and National Grid had 35 without power. More than 400,000 customers in the state lost power during the storm.

Of the 6,800 utility customers still without power across the Northeast, the majority are in Massachusetts. More than 650,000 homes and businesses in eight states were without electricity at one point.

BOSTON (CBS) – The blizzard of 2013 brought a lot of headaches, but there was also some fun with it.

Over the weekend, some folks pulled out their snowboards and tore down Beacon Hill.

Ching tells WBZ-TV that everyone had fun with it. Even a plow driver who was getting ready to clear the street waited until they finished their run.

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston students will go back to school Wednesday and the city’s parking ban and snow emergency will be lifted Tuesday evening.

Mayor Thomas Menino made the announcement late Tuesday morning, saying crews have made “significant progress” with snow removal after the weekend blizzard.

The parking ban and snow emergency will be lifted at 6 p.m. Tuesday and reduced parking rates will expire at 8 p.m.

Menino said drivers should continue to exercise caution, pay attention to “no parking” signs in areas designated for snow removal, and expect delays as crews continue to remove snow.

“Our snow removal teams did great work throughout the night last night,” Menino said.

“Our crews will be out there all day and again tonight as we continue to widen roads, make our schools safe for students, and respond to residents’ concerns about residential areas.”

Some parents are ready for school to reopen.

“I was very excited,” said West Roxbury mother Tina Ryan. “I was like, Yea!”

Others are concerned about the snowbanks children will have to walk around. “Give the people time to clear out the snow,” said another mom in Dorchester, while she walked with her kids in the street. There were no sidewalks. “It’s too soon in my eyes.”

Crews spent Tuesday clearing sidewalks around the Joyce Kilmer Elementary School in West Roxbury. Mayor Menino says school bus drivers inspected their routes, and school officials planned to visit every facility to make sure they’re safe and ready before they open.

BOSTON (CBS) – If you’ve been driving around for the past couple of days you know how hard it is to get around.

For folks living on a dead-end street in Dorchester, it has been nearly impossible.

As WBZ NewsRadio 1030 tried to pull up to 99 Harvard Park, they didn’t get far because the street was still pretty snowy.

In fact, four of the neighbors were out with shovels, not just digging out their cars but digging out the street as well.

Delphenia Rollins owns a house at the end of the street, she’s been stuck since Friday night.

“No plow has been up this street since Friday night and we need to get out,” Rollins said. “I’ve called the city, the final answer was ‘we’ll get to it.’”

Monique Johnson has Lupus and is a Dialysis patient.

“It’s very frustrating. I came out here today to shovel, to help the neighbors shovel,” she said. “Pulled a muscle in my arm, I shouldn’t be out.”

When WBZ-TV called the department of public works, they were referred to the Mayor’s Hotline, adding one more plowing request to the long list coming from the street.

By late afternoon, the neighbors were back at it.

BOSTON (CBS) – With the cleanup still ongoing from the Blizzard of 2013, the last thing anyone wants to hear is that dirty little four letter word coming out of the meteorologists this week (S-N-O-W).

Well, there appears to be some good news and some bad news today in our little corner of the world of weather. And since I know everyone could use some good weather news right about now I will start there.

There are essentially two significant chances of snow this week and both of them appear as though they will be minor. The first chance comes late Wednesday night and early Thursday, this one never really looked like it would be all that impressive.

This storm has already formed and is currently bringing rain and snow to portions of Texas. It will actually give parts of the Mid-Atlantic some snow accumulation, places like Baltimore, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and even New York City could see a few inches.

But, when it arrives here Wednesday night around midnight, the majority of the snow will be just a bit too far south, over the Atlantic Ocean. We will catch the northern fringe and for about 6-8 hours early Thursday morning some light snow is likely across southeastern Massachusetts. Best chance of accumulation will be over Cape Cod and the Islands as well as extreme southeastern Mass. 2-to-4 inches are possible down there.

From Boston and the Mass Pike south to about Plymouth, a dusting to an inch or two is possible. Farther north, just a few flurries or a period of light snow but no accumulation is expected north and west of the city.

Storm number 2 has put a bit of a scare into us this week, but thankfully appears now as though it will not develop into a major storm for the Northeast.

Weather models had been having a tough time over the last few days painting a clear picture of how events would unfold this weekend, with some suggesting that another significant winter storm would develop.

That worst case scenario now appears unlikely, all the pieces are not going to line up this time, at least not in time for New England to get another blow.

There may be some light snow on Saturday (a few inches at most), but the real storm development looks like it will happen out to sea, another snowstorm for the fishes.

So you remember I said there was good news AND bad news?

Well I think there is a very good chance that we haven’t seen our last big snowstorm this season.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not forecasting or expecting a Blizzard of 2013 Part 2. But, the weather pattern is changing to some degree and the Southern Jet Stream is becoming very active.

This means there is a much higher potential for big, “juicy” East Coast storms to develop, whether they hit New England or not, or come in the form of rain or snow, is yet to be determined.

However, for at least the next couple of weeks, a wet and stormy pattern seems likely across the eastern U.S.

So keep the shovels handy and the snowblowers gassed up, winter likely has a few punches left.

Crews are still struggling to clear the streets and sidewalks and the mayor had this message for residents.

“Be patient. We have to do a better job than we did. We’ll work harder on it and we are working very hard. The public works department and the recreation department are all really working real hard,” he said.

“We only got a 100 calls all last night compared to 1,200 the night before so the numbers are coming down.”

Menino blamed private contractors for the mess.

“(They) made commitments for a certain number of vehicles and didn’t show up with the type of vehicle we needed. They showed up with small, little pickup trucks.”

Why does this keep happening?

Simple. The vast majority of our power lines are above-ground, and when the elements start knocking down tree branches, down come the power lines, out goes the power, and up goes our blood pressure.

So here’s a silly question: why don’t we bury the power lines underground, where the weather can’t get at them?

According to the Worcester Business Journal, that question was raised to state energy secretary Richard Sullivan after a snowstorm in 2011 left close to 700,000 homes without power, and he said he had been told by Thomas May, the CEO of NStar, that it could cost up to a trillion dollars.

But the Journal did some research and calculated that the actual cost would be closer to $100 billion – less than a tenth of the CEO’s casual estimate.

One hundred billion dollars. That’s a lot of money, but not out of reach if we just get creative about it.

Here’s an idea to get the conversation started.

According to one website, we have the fifth-highest percentage of millionaires in the country living in our state,142,000 of them, including Mr. May of NStar and, no doubt, other energy industry executives.

I say, let’s have a bake sale, exclusively for all those millionaires, reasonably priced at a million dollars per cake or plate of cookies. All they have to do is buy one item, and presto – $142 billion, more than enough to bury those power lines and end the insanity.

This little project would create lots of new jobs, too.

So what do you say, millionaires? You can save us all from this repetitive heartache, and enjoy some tasty treats while doing so.

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — About 10,000 Massachusetts electric customers remain without power after last weekend’s snow storm.

NStar was reporting over 9,500 outages Tuesday night, with Duxbury, Marshfield and Plympton among the hardest hit communities. The utility says it could be Thursday night before some get the power back.

National Grid was reporting less than 500 outages as of 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

National Grid says more than 850 crews were working on the South Shore, and were being hampered by severe damage to lines and equipment, access challenges posed by snowdrifts and unplowed and narrower-than-normal streets.

Crews from 26 states and from Canada have arrived to assist and the utility expects to have all its customers back on line by Tuesday night.

About 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts lost power at the peak of the storm Saturday.

BOSTON (CBS) – Public works crews were still clearing streets and sidewalks across the city Monday night, two days after the Blizzard of 2013.

They got some help from “strike teams.”

The teams went to work Monday afternoon, using orange spray paint to highlight giant snow mounds at intersections.  That will tip off front loaders and dump trucks to remove the piles.

They also used snow melters borrowed from Massport.

Boston was hit with 24.9 inches of snow in the storm and some streets are still to narrow for two-way traffic and intersections everywhere are obscured by snow mounds several feet high.

Boston Transportation Director Tom Tinlin says his crews hope to have streets widened by Tuesday’s commute.

“When you consider the magnitude of the storm and the fact it’s the fifth largest storm in the city’s history, I think we’re doing OK,” Tinlin told WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Carl Stevens.

Tinlin said crews have been on the streets since before the first snowflake fell.

“What you have currently is in some areas what was a three lane road is now a two lane,” Tinlin said. “A two lane, is a one lane and you throw parking into the mix there and that’s problematic.”

“The question is how do we maintain safe and sufficient traffic,” he said. “A big concern on major thoroughfares is that the parking lane is now filled with snow, that really shuts the road down.”

A parking ban still in effect in Boston and many surrounding communities.

Tinlin said the ban can’t be lifted until parking lanes are cleared.

“If someone parks against those snow banks, no one can get by,” Tinlin said. “The impacts of a storm this big are great and far-reaching.”

The MBTA resumed its full schedule Monday but cautioned delays were likely.

Where To Put All The Snow?

All this snow has some public works crews scratching their heads. Where to put it? In Natick, the Highway Department has cleared out a huge lot for the sole purpose of filling it right back up again.

“You find a hole wherever you can. On the side streets it’s tough when there are a lot of driveways. You really just need to bring it down the street somewhere and dump it,” says Natick Highway Supervisor Tom Hladick.

The city of Boston is renting a melting machine to help thaw out snowbanks that have jammed up narrow downtown streets. The problem is, there may be too much volume for that to make a dent.

“With this amount of snow, it’s a long process,” says Hladick. He says Natick just got a new snow melter, but isn’t even using it yet. “We’re just going to have to haul it out for this storm because we got so much.”

BOSTON (CBS) – About 56,000 customers were still without power across Massachusetts Monday night, two days after the Blizzard of 2013.

NStar has about 44,277 homes and businesses without electricity, while National Grid is at approximately 12,284.

At the height of the storm Saturday morning, more than 400,000 customers lost power.

Most of the outages are in southeastern Massachusetts and on Cape Cod.

NASHUA, N.H. (CBS) – In her Nashua neighborhood Monday, Therese Currier was shoveling her sidewalk, and not waiting for any help.

“I think it’s a lot for the city to do residential,” said Currier. “I think they have enough to do with the roads.”

And that is just how city officials like it.

They want people to pitch in because they just do not have enough crews to get to all 214 miles of sidewalk in town.

Instead, the city focuses on clearing sidewalks that lead to schools and those in business districts where there is more pedestrian traffic.

“We got a good jump on most of those and had all the immediate school areas done for this morning for school,” said Roy Sorenson from Nashua’s Street Department. “We’re still out working on them today.”

Many Nashua neighborhood sidewalks have been cleared by residents but others are untouched, leading a mailman WBZ-TV spotted today to have to walk in the street.

Meantime, at businesses like Topiary Florist, where city crews plowed the sidewalk outside, employees say it is critical for customers to have clear access to the shop, especially in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.

“It’s essential,” said Donna Revens. “It’s a big week for us.”

According to the New Hampshire Local Government Center, each community has its own plan when it comes to sidewalks.

BOSTON (AP) — Commuters heading back to work in Massachusetts for the first time since the blizzard are being urged to use caution and leave extra time.

Many secondary roads still have a thick coating of snow, and high snow banks that block sight lines at intersections and near highway ramps make turning and merging hazardous.

In many communities, snow removal crews were out early, making driving even more tricky.

State officials are urging commuters to take public transportation when possible.

The MBTA says regularly scheduled service will resume Monday, but warns that customers should expect significant delays.

Schools in Boston and many other communities remain closed, which could ease some congestion.

Nearly 113,000 Massachusetts electric customers remained without power Monday morning, mostly on the South Shore and Cape Cod.

According to the dictionary, that means “the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way.”

And during an intense winter storm and its immediate aftermath, what could be more basic than knowing that it’s best if you stay off the roads, for your own safety, the safety of others, and to allow snow removal to take place unhindered?

Thankfully, most people do have common sense. If that weren’t the case, can you imagine what driving around here would be like?

But too many do not. They are the reason the governor imposed a travel ban on Friday, a scare tactic that appeared to deter most of the common-sense-free crowd.

But now it’s Monday, and as we the people return to the roads in full force, here they come again.

Start with the folks who figure their route to work should be back to midsummer standards by now, don’t leave extra time for the commute, and quickly descend into road rage when they encounter traffic jams. They are the ones who will see the right hand-lane left open because it is blocked up ahead by snowdrifts, zip along as if they’re beating the rest of us, then cut you off when they realize they have to merge.

Move on to the drivers like the one I saw yesterday, driving too fast in still-hazardous conditions with the phone glued to his ear.

Really, that call just couldn’t wait?

And of course, my all-time favorites, the drivers who, 48 hours after the last flakes fell, still cannot be bothered to fully clear their vehicle of snow and ice. Just pray you’re not stuck behind them when it all comes crashing down.

It’s a blessing that most of us do have common sense, and use it.

It’s a shame that we’re all held hostage to the behavior of the few who were inexplicably born without any.

ROCKPORT (CBS) – With the blizzard of 2013 come and gone, towns throughout the state have begun to take stock of the damage and start cleaning up.

For towns along the North Shore, the damage and clean up are looking especially taxing.

While power has been restored to most residents, there is still the ice and snow to deal with after the storm caked it onto houses and businesses.

“This particular storm was very significant. We had a lot of structural damage, infrastructure damage, damage to businesses as well as residences,” said Mark Schmink, Rockport’s Emergency Management Director.

The Rockport boardwalk was heavily damaged, and seawalls around the town were knocked down by blouders and rocks being tossed about by the rough seas during high tide.

“We had a lot of emergency management, a lot of public safety personnel that had to come together to weather this storm,” Schmink added.

The storm displaced four families, and forced 68 other people into temporary shelters.

The town has already announced that school is canceled on Monday.

BOSTON (CBS) -  The MBTA reopened for limited service starting Sunday at 2 p.m., and is expecting to be back at full service for Monday morning’s commute.

MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott spoke at a Sunday afternoon press conference, noting that snow accumulation, downed tree limbs and other damage from high winds and the overall age of the transit system made restoration challenging.

Despite the return to full service, Scott also warned of probable delays.

“Give yourself more time and expect that it is going to take us more time,” Scott advised customers. “But we are going to be fully operational.”

In addition to delays on the rails, authorities are asking drivers to take precautions as crews continue to work on clearing the snow.

“I would caution folks, however, that snow is built up on the shoulder and break-down lane,” said Richard Davey, a Massachusetts Department of Transportation official.

Those snow build ups have led the DOT to prohibit all peak-hour travel in the breakdown lanes of Interstate 95 and Route 3.

As for side streets that have yet to be cleared, Mayor Menino has taken issue with private contractors who appear to have fallen short of expectation.

“I’ve asked my public works person to get a full explanation as to why some of these streets weren’t touched by contractors,” Menino said on Sunday. “They are private contractors, they have to do when they sign a contract with us, and they have to do those streets. I want to know why they haven’t been done.”

Regardless of mode of transportation, Monday looks to feature a messy commute and official are asking that everyone account for the delays and be patient.

PLYMOUTH (CBS/AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick says Massachusetts came through the blizzard reasonably well, but about 144,000 residents are still without power.

Travel slowly returned to normal and crews raced to restore power in Massachusetts on Sunday after the massive snowstorm that dumped up to 30 inches of snow in the Northeast and lashed the coast with damaging winds and tides.

Some trains and buses began running Sunday, said authorities, who hoped to fully restore the system for Monday morning’s rush hour. Logan Airport also reopened, and a travel ban on roads was lifted.

About 144,000 homes and businesses, mostly along the southeastern Massachusetts coast and on Cape Cod, were without power Sunday morning and some might be without it until Tuesday, officials warned. About 1,000 people stayed overnight in shelters, said Gov. Deval Patrick.

“Considering the severity of the storm, the amount of snow and the wind, we’ve come though this pretty well,” Patrick told CBS on “Face the Nation.”

The governor, joined by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and interim Sen. William “Mo” Cowan, toured hard-hit areas of Plymouth and Cape Cod on Sunday, meeting with local emergency management officials.

Patrick said damage along the coast was still being assessed, but no serious injuries were reported from flooding.

Officials also warned of carbon monoxide dangers after two people, including a teenage boy, died while sitting in running cars in Boston.

An additional concern going forward was a forecast for rain Monday.

While warmer temperatures might begin melting snow, the rain on top of snow-laden roofs could pose a danger of collapse.

“We are encouraging people as they can do so safely to use snow rakes and so forth to move the snow off of their roofs,” Patrick said.

Pilgrim and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced that power resumed on Sunday. Power was restored from one of the three off-site lines and work is continuing to restore the other two lines.

Power had been provided by diesel generators since the storm disrupted electric transmission, which resulted in an automatic plant shutdown on Friday.

A spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says Pilgrim is “fairly close” to restoring power from the other two lines.

Postal Service spokeswoman Christine Dugas says mail will be delivered Monday wherever it’s safe to do so. She says some roads, especially in rural areas, may not be passable.

Customers are asked clear their mailboxes and walkways of snow and ice to help letter carriers avoid slips, trips and falls.

Delivery had been suspended because of the storm Saturday in all six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Mayor Tom Menino made the announcement Sunday citing the need for another day for crews to clear snow from school grounds throughout the city.

Menino said40 additional pieces of equipment will join the 600 pieces already being deployed by Boston Public Works.

The City of Boston is working with MEMA to get additional snow removal resources, with the biggest need being for front end loaders and backhoes to remove large piles of heavy snow.

Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) will have four community centers open Monday for parents who need a safe place for their child to spend the day, Menino said.

Menino also urged residents to work from home Monday or take the MBTA to get to work.

Menino said it will take a few days to clear the roads. The parking ban remains in effect.

NSTAR is reporting 117,383 outages and National Grid had 27,321 Sunday.

A large majority of the outages were in coastal communities and southeastern Massachusetts where high winds pummeled power lines.

NSTAR said its workers are still assessing the damage and that repair crews would be dispatched
“as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The utility warned the public to expect “a multi-day restoration effort with lengthy power outages.”

HULL (CBS) – With flooding, snow fall, and evacuations across the South Shore, the storm proved most dangerous for residents along the coastline.

Shoreline towns from Hull to Sandwich, along with the east-facing side of Nantucket bore the brunt of the 10 a.m. high tide, with waves outside Boston Harbor measuring around 25 feet.

But even after the storm passed, the Atlantic was still angry and minor flooding continued into the night.

Nantasket Avenue in Hull was covered in ice and debris, and residents all over were reflecting on the worst of it as they started to clean up.

“It was pretty extreme. The water was really whipping through here,” Scituate resident Suzanne Mullarkey said. ”I don’t remember [the 1978 blizzard] being quite as fast and as furious as this time.”

In Scituate, high winds and rough seas persisted into the evening.

Marshfield took a beating as well, with dozens of power lines downed leaving 90% of the town without power.

The surge even forced a WBZ-TV crew to evacuate from the deck of a beachfront hotel in Scituate.

Public works crews were working to repair street lights, and many residents were waiting for power to be restored to their homes, but the neighborhood kids were happy to have a few days off to slip and slide down the hills of Hull.

“It’s fun for the kids,” Monique Roche, a Hull resident, said. “It’s fun to have a couple days off work too.”

Road conditions are still a serious situation, and the National Guard is out looking for people in need of help or a ride to nearby shelter.

“Being able to help people who otherwise would’ve been stranded – it was just great today,” said Sgt. Alfred Tripolone.

So far, no serious injuries have been reported.

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — A statewide driving ban across Massachusetts ended at 4 p.m. Saturday as the Blizzard of 2013 left New England.

Gov. Deval Patrick issued the travel ban on Friday because the blizzard made road conditions treacherous and there were severe concerns about safety.

Public transportation remains unavailable. The MBTA, which shut down Friday at 3:30 p.m., said on Saturday that the storm caused major issues for them, and service will not return until Monday.

“Our goal is to restore service for Monday,” MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said in a tweet. “Crews (are) working around the clock to clear tracks, facilities, and maintain equipment.”

Part of the problem was a communications tower in Quincy that was knocked out of service, preventing communication with MBTA field crews. Fortunately, the tower has been restored and is helping the clean up process along.

The commuter rail is similarly stalled, but the use of the MBCR’s new “snow jet” is expediting the process. The equipment uses a jet engine to simultaneously melt and blow snow out of the way.

“It’s helping enormously because if you don’t have that type of equipment, as you can see, it’s all hand shoveling and it just takes forever to do,” said Bob Johnson, the MBCR’s Chief Engineer.

Logan Airport opened a runway on Saturday night, but says no flights will be coming in until Sunday. Operations had to shut down overnight because of whiteout conditions and more than 2 feet of snow. Travelers should contact their airlines to check on flights for Sunday.

Amtrak will have limited service between Boston and New York City.

More than 274,000 customers were without power in Massachusetts late Saturday afternoon, many of them along the coast.

The National Weather Service said 24.9 inches of snow fell in Boston, not enough to break the city’s 2003 record of 27.6 inches, but enough to move into fifth place on the city’s all-time list. A wind gust of 76 mph was recorded at Logan Airport.

Two storm-related deaths have been reported in Massachusetts. A 13-year-old boy went into cardiac arrest in Roxbury after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning in a snowed-in car.  He later passed away, according to the Boston Fire Department. A second carbon monoxide incident killed a young man in Mattapan.

Kicking off that 11:10 AM forecast with anchor Laurie Kirby, I stated that we were a little more than 72 hours away from a fascinating coincidence between the Blizzard of 1978 and the potential Blizzard of 2013.

Three days out and I was actually feeling quite confident about this impending storm of possible historical proportions.

It has come and gone and while there are some significant differences, there are also some amazing similarities between the two beasts.

Similarities:

Dates Of Action: February 6-7, 1978 & February 8-9, 2013.

Overall Snowfall Totals: 20-30″ across much of the same broad area with much lower amounts on outer Cape Cod generally under 10″.

Winds: Frequent gusts of 45-65 mph.

State Of Emergency: Declared in both blizzards.

Hardest Hit Towns For Coastal Damage: Revere, Hull, Scituate and Sandwich.

Satellite Imagery: Both blizzards looked like hurricanes with eye formations.

Differences:

Strike Days: Monday-Tuesday in 1978 vs. a Friday-Saturday in 2013. Impact was serious in 1978 as dire forecast was deemed unlikely by much of the skeptical public since its arrival was late. Many people went to work.

Road Closures: Ban on travel by Governor Dukakis in 1978 was too late resulting in thousands of vehicles stranded on major highways in the afternoon. In 2013, Governor Patrick recommended businesses and schools closed for the day and a ban on travel starting in mid-afternoon. This action resulted in clogged roads everywhere for days and days in 1978 vs. a more rapid cleanup and return to normal in 2013.

Snow Removal Equipment & Road Chemical Treatment: Both better in 2013 vs. 1978

Snowfall Jackpot Zones: 30-40″ over parts of ME Coast, southwestern NH, portions of central MA and south central CT in 2013 vs. 35-40″ southwest of Boston into northern RI and 10-15″ snow ME coast in 1978.

Peak Gusts: Higher in 1978 at 75-92 mph vs. 65-80 in 2013.

High Tides: 4 consecutive tides of 4-6 feet above normal with mountainous waves of 25-50 feet in 1978 vs. two consecutive tides of 2-4 feet above normal with seas of 15-25 feet in 2013. Flooding was major in all coastal areas in 1978.

Damage: 1978 estimates of nearly $2 billion (adjusted for inflation) vs. much less but unknown general dollar amount in 2013. More than 1900 homes were significantly damaged or destroyed in 1978 vs. much less devastation in 2013.

Lives Claimed: In 1978, 99 in MA & RI vs only a very few fatalities in 2013.

Preceding The Blizzards: The ground was bare in 2013 vs. some remaining snow in some areas north and west of Boston from a significant snowfall on January 20-21, 1978.

In the Record Books: 1978 is Boston’s second greatest snowfall at 27.1″ vs 2013 as the 5th greatest snowfall at 24.9″.

Both blizzards were triggered by a lobe of tropical moisture and some energy in the southern branch of the jet stream merging with a bundle of increasing atmospheric spin in the northern branch of the jet stream.

The commingling and consolidating of these two features created rapidly intensifying ocean storms simultaneously feeding on the relatively warm ocean water and drawing on a supply of very cold air from Canada.

As linkage was initiated, the resultant strengthening circulations of both storms resulted in deceleration and a wobbling of the centers of low pressure.

For the Blizzard of 1978, the duration of stall was more than 24 hours compared to about 12 hours for the Blizzard of 2013. The latter storm was clearly more progressive.

On average, snowfall lasted about 6 fewer hours in 2013 vs. 1978.

BOSTON (CBS) – Just hours after a teenage boy died from carbon monoxide poisoning, the storm has claimed another victim in the same fashion.

A young man in his early twenties became the second known victim of the storm when he was found in his car on Woolson Street in Mattapan. Police say he was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning and was dead when they arrived.

The victim appeared to be trying to stay warm in his car, but the snow was blocking his tailpipe causing CO to build up in his car.

Two children were hospitalized from CO poisoning on Saturday night.

A brother and sister, ages 5 and 8, were out shoveling with their father in East Boston when he put them in the car to get warm. Minutes later, the father noticed they were unconscious and rushed them to the hospital.

Authorities say the two children will survive.

With CO incidents on the rise, authorities are asking everyone to make sure their cars’ tailpipes are clear of snow before starting the vehicle, and also to check their dryer and furnace vents at home, since drifting snow can block those as well.

A landscape completely transformed from green to white and the coastline forever altered by hurricane force winds and giant, powerful waves.

This one was truly a storm for the record books.

West Boylston led all communities with 34.5 inches.

At 1 p.m., Boston’s Logan Airport had 24.9 inches, officially making it the 5th biggest snow event in more than 100 years of record keeping in the city.

The Blizzard of 2013 is now just behind the April Fool’s Day Storm in 1997 when Boston received 25.4 inches of snow.

This storm fell short of the all-time record of 27.5 inches which fell during the President’s Day Storm in February 2003.

The numbers are interesting, but the true legacy of our New England storms is how they hold up in our memories .

I don’t think anyone would dispute that by that measure, the Blizzard of 1978 is number one and will likely remain so even after this storm has ended.

In Worcester, the “Blizzicane” of 2013 dumped the third most snowfall in history there, 28.5 inches.

After literally hundreds of snowfall reports from all over Southern New England it seems that just about everyone has been buried in the 18-to-30 inch range.

A few “lucky” towns like Framingham and Spencer came in a few inches above 30.

Conversely, down on Cape Cod, total snow amounts have been closer to 6-to-12 inches due to a much wetter snowfall.

The cleanup will take several days, but the good news is that no more snow is coming in the short term.

Highs over the next several days will range from the mid 30s to the mid 40s early next week.

It does appear though, that we are entering a new pattern.

The southern jet stream is going to be much more active for the next few weeks.

When that is the case, we have to keep a constant eye on the Gulf of Mexico.

With an active southern storm track in February we are almost certain to get a few more coastal storms and add to the now above normal snowfall total this season.

BOSTON (CBS) – Down on Newbury Street, one man has made some unlikely friends who needed his help during the blizzard.

Affectionately known as the “Bird Man of Newbury Street,” Paul Magla has been watching over a flock of sparrows for the past decade.

“I whistle and they come. I’ve been doing it for years, ” Magla told WBZ-TV. “They start flocking and they’re hungry.”

He started feeding the birds when he worked as a realtor, and when things got quiet at the office, he started whistling to them.

Since then, he’s been whistling to them and feeding them bread every day.

When he woke up Saturday morning, he looked out his window to find a pleasant surprise.

“They were on the balcony, waiting to get fed,” Magla said.

With the rest of their food blanketed in snow, they’re sticking close to the man they know and trust.

“Usually they don’t sit on [my] hand as much, but because it’s cold, they are. They want the food,” Magla said. “They are very active – they never stay like this.”

Magla feeds them whole wheat bread, because he wants to give them what he calls “the good stuff.”

Despite the weather, plenty of people stop to watch and take pictures of Magla and his birds.

“A lot of times, kids will walk by and I’ll try to show them,” Magla said. “If you be gentle and kind to something, it will come to you.”

After most communities across the state were hit by more than two feet of snow, travel conditions were too dangerous for fans and staff to make it to the TD Garden.

The canceled game will provide the team a rare day off in the NHL’s post-lockout schedule.

Their rest will be brief, of course, as the Bruins are scheduled to hit the road to take on the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow.

A make-up date for the Tampa Bay game will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

Some had to be taken out in the buckets of front-end loaders, including resident Kelly Hochmuth.

An emergency medical technician had to take Hochmuth’s 6-week-old baby out separately.

The forecast only called for moderate swells so residents were not evacuated Friday night.

Those who were evacuated are keeping busy at a senior center in the town’s municipal building. It could be days before they can go home because officials are still assessing damage to their houses.

In Quincy, residents of two neighborhoods were evacuated Friday night and Saturday morning because of flooding.
