BOSTON (CBS) – A line of very strong thunderstorms rolled through this evening out ahead of a coldfront…drenching rain, hail and gusty winds were all a problem during the evening commute. The storm threat has diminished now that the sun is lowering and will shortly set but may be an issue again tomorrow.

The coldfront that aided the thunderstorm outbreak today will be draped over the coastline tomorrow. This will provide a focus for more storms to develop tomorrow afternoon. The limiting factor may be the heating…highs will only mange the middle 70s, not the middle 80s like today. With that said, the jetstream will be in a favorable position so if storms can overcome the lack of warmth, then we may have another round of severe weather.

Following tomorrow’s storm potential, dry and more stable air will come flowing in for the middle and second half of the week. Clouds will be whisked away by the afternoon on Wednesday with temps in the 70s. High pressure will be situated over New England on Thursday and Friday leading to ample sunshine…highs will range from the 70s at the coast with a seabreeze to around 80 inland.

That same high will shift offshore a bit for the weekend and temps will climb into the middle 80s. We will also see an increase in humidity and a small chance for afternoon thunderstorms.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there! A real nice morning at the beaches and across eastern MA…but clouds are on the increase as we move into the afternoon. SW breezes will pick up this afternoon with the approaching clouds and highs will be climbing into the 70′s nearing 80. We are tracking a batch of showers which will be pushing into Northern and western new England during the afternoon as part of an approaching occluded front. Steadiest of the showers will fall across the north. Most will have a tendency to break apart as they spread into the region. Still, after 4 PM, as clouds thicken..a few of these showers will start to track eastward. I expect a few showers to finally reach the coast around 6-8 PM. Not expecting anything very heavy…but a few showers will be possible during the early evening.

The occluded front will push off the coast late tonight, with drier air following in overnight. Monday will be partly sunny with a warming and dry west wind. Temps will again climb into the upper 70′d and Lwr 80′s . Cooler air will begin to push south from Canada. This push will form another cold front which will push into New England which could trigger a few more scattered showers or a thunderstorm during the mid to late afternoon. Most of the day should be fairly dry and warm, with the potential for a brief afternoon downpour inland.

The front from Monday will stall over us Tuesday with Mostly Cloudy skies. This cooler air is being directed into the Northeast by a reinforced trough across the Northeast. The trough will steer another batch of moisture/energy as a weak wave of low pressure through the mid-Atlantic and track just off our coast. A batch of rain main will form along this stalled from for some afternoon showers Tuesday. Once this front pushes off the coast Tuesday night, the trough will begin to lift out with a flattening flow of Jetstream. Building high pressure will follow in for the middle to end of the week with several days of sunshine with temps in the 70′s nearing the Lwr 80′s by the weekend.

While it has been a struggle to get a return of the heat that we had at the end of May, there are signs of more upper level ridging on the east coast by the end of June. This will be the kind of pattern which will be able to tap into the warmth in the Midwest and direct it into the northeast. An overall warmer weather pattern will be in place by the end of the month heading into July as we will soon be tapping on the door of 90 degrees once again!

West winds will be just enough of a land breeze which will allow the Cape to climb into the mid-upper 70's as well.

It has been a rainy 2 weeks which we are all thrilled to finally put behind us. The weather pattern appears to have settled down a bit, but will still remain active enough that we can not completely settle in and relax. Overall, I think we have turned a corner and the pattern should start become more summer like, especially towards the end of the month of June. This June obviously will be remembered for it’s rain…as many areas have picked up 8-9″ of rain this month and we still have half of the month to go! So far it is a top 5 wettest June for Hartford, Providence and Worcester an Boston is quickly moving into that league with just another additional 1/4″ of rain needed.

Why am I even talking about this???!!! It is gorgeous outside! High pressure has moved in just in time for Father’s day weekend, bringing low humidity and light WNW winds for this Saturday with highs in the upper 70′s and Lwr 80′s. West winds will be just enough of a land breeze which will allow the Cape to climb into the mid-upper 70′s as well. The high will be sliding off the mid-Atlantic coast tonight with WSW winds to follow for Sunday.

Father’s day will start off with sunshine in the morning but clouds will be increasing in the afternoon. A weak area of low pressure will be tracking from the Midwest up into Northern New England. Clouds will be advancing during the second half of the day as a warm front approaches. This front will likely trigger scattered showers or a thunderstorm Sunday Afternoon in Northern and Western New England, while the coast should remain mostly dry. The Cape will enjoy a dry weekend..but SW breezes gusting to 20-25 mph will make for a cooler day with highs in the Lwr 70′s, 60′s on the islands.

As the warm front pushes through Monday, temps will remain mild, and a bit humid with in the Lwr 80′s and a mix of clouds and sun. Just enough instability will remain in place, so once the cold front pushes in during the afternoon, it could trigger a scattered shower or thunderstorm. This cold front will stall along the east coast of MA for Tuesday which could be a trigger for another shower or two and more clouds. But most of the day will be dry. Now if this front remains hung up, we could be dealing with more rain for the midweek riding up this stalled front. BUT that is NOT what we are leaning towards at this moment as some of our models have suffered some feed back issues. This front should push far enough off the coast Tuesday, with building high pressure bringing in a seasonal airmass with sunshine and temps in the 70′s near 80. Temps should begin to start to warm up a bit more by next weekend. As long as there is a trough in place across the northeast it will be hard to have any significant warmth in the northeast through at least the Solstice. Once summer begins…we could start to warm up quite quickly by the end of the month with signs of a big ridge becoming established on the east coast by late June. We will see how long this will hold. Obviously…this summer is nothing like the last two which featured plenty of summer sun and heat. It is a different pattern which is showing signs similar to June 2009. Hopefully we can get summer back on track…a little quicker this time around.

Quick, it stopped raining…run out there and mow the lawn! My lawn literally looks like a jungle…it’s on my list of things to do this weekend. Thankfully, we will all get the opportunity to do things outdoors this weekend as the rain will avoid us for the most part this weekend.

Last night’s storm is swirling away after leaving behind another two inches for most. Boston picked up 1.8″ and the monthly total now stands at 8.4″…sliding this June into the 6th spot for the wettest June ever. Behind the storm, high pressure is building in and that means we catch a break from the rain this weekend. Tomorrow is the weekend pick…a nearly perfect day…sunny and warm with a nice breeze and a high near 80.

The high will slide offshore on Sunday and sun will fade behind clouds in the afternoon. A frontal boundary will be encroaching from the west by the end of the day and there is a small chance for a few showers by the end of the day…close to sunset. But most of the Father’s Day will be rain-free!

Enjoy your weekend and to the Dads…Happy Father’s Day.

The storm we’ve been plotting all week has finally made it to the East Coast and it is undergoing strengthening just south of New England. The result…another soaking rain event elevating the flood concerns as we head into the weekend. Rain will remain steady through the night and through tomorrow morning’s commute before tapering off midday…in the end we are looking at an additional 1-2″. Temporary street and stream flooding will occur in the usual spots. The larger rivers are already swollen from recent rains so a few may rise into minor flood stage before receding over the weekend.

The storm will drift away tomorrow afternoon and drier air will work in from the west. This will create a few sunny breaks which may destabilize the atmosphere a bit and lead to one final shower or downpour tomorrow evening with a fading coldfront.

The coldfront will fizzle away tomorrow night and high pressure will rush in behind it. This sets the stage for a stunning Saturday loaded with sunshine and warm temps close to 80 degrees! Saturday will also be the pick of the weekend…as the high slides offshore on Father’s Day, sunshine will fade behind some cloud cover in the afternoon. Temps will still be warm up near 80 but the clouds may get a bit threatening late in the day with a couple of showers approaching by sunset. My feeling right now is that most will stay dry and rain-free but this system will need to watched closely because if it speeds up more numerous showers will be around in the afternoon.

Flood Watches have once again been issued from Thursday to Saturday morning…temporary street and stream flooding will be the biggest concern but the larger rivers are quite swollen and will need to be watched very closely.

Surface low pressure is strengthening in the Midwest, driven by a potent upper level shortwave which will drive the storm to the Northeast where it will strengthen further producing intense rain over parts of New England beginning tomorrow afternoon. The heaviest of the rain will fall tomorrow night and Friday morning when the low-level jet and warm air advection peak. The storm will slowly pull away Friday afternoon and drier air will work in shutting the rain off just in time for the weekend. Along with the rain, wind will be gusty out of the northeast especially along the South Coast Thursday night and Friday morning when gusts could approach and possibly top 40 mph. This wind direction will also lead to very chilly temps…50s and lower 60s.

The timing couldn’t be better for the weekend however…the storm will depart and in it’s wake high pressure will settle in leading to lots of sun on both weekend days and warm temps close to 80…perfect for Father’s Day Weekend!

So far June has been very frustrating with all the rain we have seen and with another frontal system loaded with moisture marching through, we are getting more heavy downpours tonight. We’ve already picked up over 6″ of rain this month and only 11 days are in the books. This ranks 2013 as the 15th wettest June on record with several weeks still to come…BTW, the wettest June ever was in 1982 when Boston picked up 13.20 inches of rain! Unfortunately with lots of downstream blocking, the wet pattern is going to hold for the rest of the week culminating with a June Nor’easter Thursday night and Friday.

The heavy downpours this evening will shut off after midnight as the frontal system slides through. WNW winds will bring in drier air tomorrow so after a gloomy start to the day, breaks of sun will bust through leaving us with a decent afternoon with highs close to 70. The break from the rain will be only temporary as system in the Ohio Valley picks up steam as it reaches the Mid-Atlantic late Thursday. The storm will quickly strengthen with upper level support and blow up into a solid sized Nor’easter. The rain will break-out in the afternoon on Thursday and become heavy at times Thursday night and Friday morning before tapering off Friday afternoon. Rain amounts will likely fall between 1-3″ and the rain will be cold and windswept…a miserable finish to the week. Of course, with all this rain, rivers and stream are already swollen and will remain that way so they will have to be watched closely through the week. We’ll certainly have more episodes of street and parking lot flooding making driving around town difficult.

The good news here is that following the Friday storm we won’t have raindrops until next week which means a mainly dry Father’s Day weekend with lots of sun on Saturday and high in the middle 70s. Sunday should be a bit warmer near 80 with the some late day clouds and a small chance for an evening shower.

It is like the weather pattern has turned on the atmospheric hose! April was dry with a minor drought developing. Since May 8th, the tables have turned and we have seen up to 7-9″ of rain! Tropical storm Andrea water logged the region with 4-6″ of south of the MA Pike. And now, another slug of soaking rain to move through with additional 1-2+”. Bye Bye drought! Flood Watch has been posted through Tuesday Night because of the high water table currently in place. Most small rivers and streams will be vulnerable to more flooding. Excessive water will lead to the potential for more street and poor drainage flooding in any downpours.

A warm humid air mass is surging up the Atlantic seaboard with a trough directing a strong SW flow right up into New England. There is currently a cool dome of air across the region. This warm humid air to the south is lifting up over the cooler air in the form of an approaching warm front which is moving towards us this evening. Showers have been turning into a steadier rain. We will be tracking strong to severe thunderstorms in the mid-Atlantic states which will be shifting northward into New England tonight. These storms will weaken upon their arrival, but heavy downpours with rumbles of thunder are possible late tonight through the early morning hours which could drop rainfall rates up to 1″ an hour and help to create this localized flooding while most are asleep.

With a low to our west, the warm front will begin to push into SNE Tuesday where it will stall. The heaviest rain will be quickly be ending early tomorrow and lifting north and pulling off the coast. Still expect damp drizzly conditions with a few left over showers for the AM commute. The trend will be for drier weather to develop by the late morning into the midday with a few breaks of sun possible. CT may get into the warm humid sector and climb into the 70′s behind the warm front, while most of us will remain in the 60′s. A cold front will sweep through tomorrow afternoon with the low tracking through the region. This may trigger another round of thunderstorms for the mid-late afternoon which will track from west to east. Any breaks of midday sun will increase our risk for strong storms to develop. If clouds hold, it will be cooler and more stable…so less of a risk.

The upper low will still be over us on Wednesday…so expect plenty of clouds to linger with breezy WNW winds in place. Brighter skies should be found in western new England. Wednesday will be an overall drier day, but still just enough instability in place for a few scattered showers with highs in the lwr 70′s

In case you have not noticed, the atmosphere is in a bit of a blocking pattern. A large area of high pressure in the Atlantic is helping the Jetstream to buckle with a persistent trough in the northeast with several shortwaves which continue to spill into this trough keeping a very active weather pattern going with seasonable cool temps for the week ahead. Another vigorous short wave will track from California, over a ridge in the Midwest and head back down into the trough across the Northeast for the end of the week.

This will be a wave of low pressure which will track south of New England. yesterday, it looked like it would track far enough away from us to keep rain out of the forecast for the end of the week. The latest information shows this low track closer to New England. A low will from in the Midwest, and track east through Pennsylvania and off the coast of New Jersey. Once off the coast it should become a stronger low. This low will likely be se of Nantucket early Friday. After some sunshine Thursday morning… It appears we will have to watch for another round of rain late Thursday-Thursday night into Friday morning. Gusty winds and larger swells may become an issue depending on the strength and track of the low. This could also come with another heavy swath of rain which could lead to more flooding in southern New England with a few more inches of water to fall. Still plenty of questions still to be answered this far out. Nothing is certain yet. Luckily this will be a fast moving low…so the heavy rain and wind should be quickly departing Friday.

Another shortwave will dive down for James Bay bringing with it cooler dry air. This will reinforce the trough across New England all weekend with a seasonally cool air mass in the middle 70′s. At this point the weekend looks dry and pleasant with a mix of sun and clouds. After this week….it will be a welcome break.

Enjoy the sun today because we are already tracking our next batch of rain. Weak high pressure sits over us today with light west winds warming temps into the upper 70′s and Lwr 80s inland during the afternoon. More clouds in northern new England where skies are partly cloudy. Building clouds could deposit a hit or miss shower across the north this afternoon. Southern New England will remain sun-filled. A beautiful beach day with light winds, low humidity and a very high UV index. We still have wave action at our coastlines, so there is a moderate-high risk of rip currents. Especially at out south facing beaches where seas are still running 3-6 feet.

We are tracking moisture coming out of the Gulf and an upper level trough which has been digging into the Midwest. Severe storms have been firing again in these states along a frontal boundary which be sliding eastward and arriving here in the Northeast Monday Night and Tuesday. The moisture from the Gulf will be steered up into the Northeast by this upper level trough as it digs in across the Mid-Atlantic. Clouds will be increasing Monday ahead of an approaching warm front. Showers will begin to spread into the region by the later afternoon and reach the coast towards sunset. Heavy rain w/ embedded storms will push through Monday night through early Tuesday with locally heavy rain and the potential for more localized street and stream flooding. Some of the heavy rain should wind down for a bit on Tuesday. The warm front will stall over SNE and become a trigger for more scattered and thunderstorms to ride along it for the afternoon hours.

With the trough still in place across New England Wednesday, we can still expect some unsettled weather. The low with it’s cold front will be tracking through and off the coast early on Wednesday. Lingering showers are likely across the north in the morning, with a trend to some drier and warmer weather in the afternoon with WSW temps should be able to climb into the 70′s nearing 80 after a cooler damp Tuesday.

Another shortwave will dive into the through from the Great lakes through the mid-Atlantic and steer another batch of rain likely just south of New England. It will be close as some showers could hug the south coast. At this point it looks mainly dry with a slight reinforcing push of cooler air on Thursday. Building high pressure from the west into New England should promise a nice clean seasonal airmass heading into the start of next weekend with sunshine and temps near 80

Well, that was fun! A widespread 2-5″ of rainfall fell across the region in the past 24 hours due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea. Several communities exceeded 4″ of rain, like Taunton, Foxboro, Natick, Bridgewater, Douglas, Woonsocket and Berkeley. The post-tropical low cruised over the Cape & Islands this morning. It is now heading for the Gulf of Maine and wrapping in cooler dry air on the back side helping to keep temps in the 50′s this morning under the clouds. Meanwhile, the dry air has been eroding some of the clouds with sunshine in the CT river valley. These breaks of sun will be shifting eastward as the low departs, allowing for breaks of sun to emerge across Eastern MA for the midday through the afternoon. Still plenty of clouds mixed in to. With a breeze from the WNW, temps should respond to the increase of sun and allow highs to climb into the Lwr-mid 70′s by the end of the day. High surf advisory remains in place with seas 3-6 feet, so watch for the potential for strong rip currents if you plan on being at the beaches this afternoon as the sun starts to emerge.

There is another piece of lift/energy hanging back in the mid atlantic which will still have to swing through late today into the early evening hours. As it approaches, skies will again begin to cloud over after 3 PM. This could trigger a few late day scattered showers or a thunderstorm…but for most of us the remainder of the day will be dry. Skies will continue to clear this evening with lows dropping into the 50′s. Weak high pressure will settle in over us Sunday with sunny to partly sunny skies, light WSW winds and highs able to climb into the Lwr 80′s inland and 70′s at the coast with a sea breeze. Sunday will be you pick of the weekend!

The week will start out decent enough on Monday, but clouds will be on the increase during the afternoon ahead of an approaching warm front which could trigger a few scattered showers or a thunderstorm late in the day and into the evening. This warm front is part of an upper low which will be swinging in from the northern plains and eventually through New England. This upper low will help to keep periodic showers going from Monday night-Wednesday. So a bit of a cooler unsettled stretch of showers through the midweek. High pressure will again begin to assert it’s influence upon the northeast by the end of the week with highs in the 70′s with increasing sunshine.

Our drought concerns have pretty much vanished due to the recent rains of Many and early June. We have picked up 18.05″ of precipitation since January 1…normal is 19.07″. So in Boston we are only 1″ below normal. In Worcester we have picked up 20.38″ of total precip since Jan 1st and that is almost exactly near the average 20.23″! So despite the dry conditions at times, Drought never seems to last in New England for very long. What a rainstorm! But this weekend, we will be getting back on track to enjoying these fleeting moments of a summer season which always flies by much too fast!

Andrea is no longer a tropical storm, it’s a post-tropical storm but the terminology doesn’t matter…it’s still going to absolutely soak us tonight. Tropical moisture will ride up and over the cooler marine air in place over the Northeast. This will enhance the rain especially to the north and west of the track. The track will travel over the Cape Cod Canal and therefore the heaviest rain will fall throughout most of the State except for the Outer Cape and Islands. Rainfall amounts will range from 2-4″ and this will lead to street and parking lot flooding, small creeks and streams will rise rapidly and if prone, basements will take on water.

The center of circulation will travel over the Canal tomorrow morning and therefore there will still be a few leftover showers or downpours first thing tomorrow morning but following its passage, NW will commence and will usher in drier air which will lead to brightening and sunny breaks in the afternoon. There will still be a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm tomorrow evening with another upper level impulse of energy but most of tomorrow will be rain-free.

Sunday is shaping up to be a pretty sweet day! Sun will mix with clouds and temps will warm close to 80 in the afternoon…a solid finish to the weekend!

With quite a bit of blocking downstream, a fairly persistent trough will be present over the Northeast through the middle of next week. This will send a series of fronts through the region and with cool air aloft, showers and thunderstorms will be likely Monday through Wednesday of next week.

Have a great weekend!

BOSTON (CBS) – Nothing like a tropical storm to start off your weekend right? No doubt there are numerous graduations, parties, cookouts and little league games going on this weekend, so I will try and spell things out as clearly and precisely as possible here.

WBZ WEATHER: Current Conditions | Interactive Radar |Watches & Warnings

First of all, while this is a tropical system, there is no need to be concerned with it strengthening, in fact by the time it reaches our latitude early Saturday, it will likely be called something like “The Remnants of What Once Was Tropical Storm Andrea.”

TIMELINE:
Now through 7 pm: light to moderate rain, some heavier bands…

7 pm through 4 am: The peak of this rain event…torrential, pounding rain at times…several inches will fall in a 6-12 hour period, leading to flooding.

Saturday, 4 am through 8 am: Rain tapers in intensity and shuts off completely from south to north by the end of this time period.

9 am to 1 pm: Clouds lift and erode from south to north…sunshine will appear first in southern and western sections, then everywhere by midday/early afternoon

Afternoon/Early Evening: Partly sunny, dry, 70s

8 pm-Midnight: A brief shower may come through, maximum of an hour or two, then clearing

Sunday: Partly sunny, warm, dry, 75-80.

By far the greatest threat for Southern New England will be heavy, flooding rainfall. There will be urban and poor drainage flooding, ponding on roadways and some small stream flooding. If you live in a flood-prone area, you should monitor the situation closely tonight.

We are expecting a fairly widespread 2-3” of rainfall by Saturday morning with some pockets as much as 4 or even 5” well to the north and west. Slightly lower amounts are forecast over Cape Cod and the Islands due to the track of the storm passing nearby (the heaviest rain with these systems is always to the north and west of the storm track).

There is no real wind concern with this event. Given the track, the highest gusts will be over the Cape and Islands between 10pm and 6am Tonight…gusts will range from 20-40mph during that time. Inland, winds should not be too gusty, perhaps 10-20mph on average.

A frontal boundary is draped near New England this evening and along it rain showers are breaking out. This rain is not associated with TS Andrea…the remnants of which will travel up the East Coast and thoroughly drench us Friday and Friday night.

Tonight’s rain will cool the atmosphere…surface temps will fall back into the 50s and low 60s by morning just as the warmer, somewhat tropical air is working up from the south. This is key because not only will the remnants of Andrea be loaded with moisture but as warm air rides up and over cooler air, even more moisture will get squeezed out. The result will be very heavy bands of rain later tomorrow and tomorrow night. Rain amounts will range from 2-3″ with locally higher amounts and temporary street flooding will be an issue along with the rise of creeks and smaller streams. The storm will be decaying a bit as it comes up the coast so winds will not be much of a factor…most experience NE winds of 15-30 mph. But along the South Coast, closer to the storm’s center, winds could gust as high as 45mph for a brief period later Friday night.

Andrea will be a fast mover and the rain will shut off by Saturday morning…drier air will gradually work in behind the departing storm and breaks of sunshine will appear. The air will remain unstable behind the system so lots of clouds will be present throughout the day on Saturday. Temps will struggle with limited sunshine getting capped in the lower 70s. Sunday will be a little better with longer intervals of sunshine and temps in the middle 70s. All in all, not a perfect weekend but at least the majority of it will be rain-free.

We have our first tropical system of the season in the Atlantic…Tropical Storm Andrea has formed in the Gulf and will impact every State on the East Coast by the weekend. The wind won’t be the issue but the moisture will. Heavy rain will spread up the East Coast Friday into Friday night and drench Southern New England with 1-3″ of rain.

Tomorrow will be a dry day with some sun to be had in the morning but with a frontal boundary draped to our north in the afternoon, clouds will increase and showers will break out in Northern New England in the afternoon. A trough will dig into the East Coast from the Great Lakes grabbing the remnants of Andrea and slingshot them north Thursday night. Moisture from the northern flank of the system will get rung out by the stalled front over New England leading to showers Thursday night and Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, some of the deep tropical moisture will overrun the area…this will result in the heaviest and the steadiest of the rain falling in the afternoon. Friday night, the core of the remnants reaches Southern New England and very heavy rain can be expected…1-3″ of rain looks likely and some temporary street flooding will occur. The system will be fast-moving and out of here by Saturday morning but the upper-level system will be hanging back over us. This will lead to quite a bit of cloud cover and even a few passing showers but most of the weekend appears to be rain-free…just not cloud-free.

Another lovely day with highs in the lower 70s and this great spell will hang around another day before going downhill over the second half of the week. Tomorrow will be a carbon copy except for the wind direction…still refreshing but this time off the water cooling off some of the beaches in the afternoon.

A storm system will approach later in the day on Thursday spreading showers into Northern New England and clouds in Southern New England. With the limited sun temps will be a tad cooler near 70.

We continue to head downhill on Friday as a moisture loaded system heads up the Eastern Seaboard from the Gulf of Mexico. There is a chance that this system takes on tropical characteristics. Even if it becomes tropical, the wind will be a non-factor…it’s all about the rain…and it may be soaking. The rain will pick up in intensity later on Friday and become heavy at times Friday night before shifting offshore early on Saturday. There will still be a few lingering showers during the day on Saturday but there will also be many rain-free hours too. Sunday will be the better of the two weekend days with brighter skies and only a slim chance for a shower.

Thanks to today’s rain, the heatwave is history and very shortly the humidity will be too. A coldfront is sliding through the region this evening…there is still a bit of juice out there to bubble up on more heavy downpour before the evening is through in Eastern MA. But by midnight the front will have cleared all locals and comfy air will come flowing in behind it. By morning, we are looking at temps in the 50s and dewpoints in the 40s…very nice!

High pressure will settle in for the middle of the week providing ample sunshine and daily high temps in the 70s along with refreshing land and seabreezes. That same high will slide off to the east and muggy air will begin returning on Thursday. A warmfront will be draped to our north so any showers will be focused there but we’ll certainly see more clouds by Thursday.

Friday and heading into the weekend get more interesting. All eyes will be focused on the Florida Straights and the Eastern Gulf where a cluster of showers and thunderstorms may develop into our first tropical system of the season. The National Hurricane Center gives it a 20% chance of becoming “Andrea”. If it forms it is never expected to become strong but it will be loaded with moisture and with a trough digging into the East Coast, a heavy rain threat exists up and down the Eastern Seaboard late this week and into the start of the weekend. As of now, whatever forms or doesn’t form is likely to produce heavy rain Friday into Saturday with improving weather for Sunday.

What an awesome summer weekend out there! Perfect weather for enjoying the beach with plenty of sunshine and a steady breeze from the SW. Highs are climbing into the 80′s near 90 this afternoon, with a few areas across SNH and the Merrimack Valley likely to climb into the Lwr 90′s once again to put on exclamation point on this early season heat wave. Along the south coast, winds are picking up from the SW where winds will be gusting 25-35 at times. Clouds have lifted for sunshine along the south coast. Temps will remain cooler with wind off the water in the Lwr-mid 70′s.

The Severe Storms Prediction Center issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 PM tonight for Northern Western and Central New England. Those excluded from the watch are closer to the coast which will have less of a chance of sever storms because of the cooling influence of the ocean. The marine air has pushed into SE MA with the SW winds. keeping temps near 80-85 inland in Bristol and Plymouth counties. We are tracking a pre-frontal trough which will be pushing into western New England later today. Most of us will enjoy a perfectly fine day, but further inland the atmosphere is ripe for thunderstorms to begin to form especially by mid-late afternoon.

Thunderstorms will have the best chance of being severe with winds over 58 mph or 3/4=” size hail in Northern and Western New England. There are plenty of ingredients in play in this warm moist environment which will allow a strong line of storms to form and begin to track inland during the mid-late afternoon hours. These storms will come with heavy rain, lightning, hail, and the potential of damaging straight line winds. As heavy rain falls it drags down heavy cold air aloft…along with strong winds which mix down to the ground. The best chance of tree or power line damage form these storms resides in Northern and Western New England closer to the instability. The SPC has mentioned that these storms will be rotating, thanks to turning of wind with height. There is a slight risk of an isolated tornado. We will watch and track these storms as they push into the region later today.

These storms will be triggered by a pre-frontal trough out ahead of the main cold front. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the thunderstorms will have a tendency to become weaker and become heavy rain makers and more scattered in nature…compared to the more mature storms in the west which will have hail and strong winds. Showers will diminish after midnight for a bit of an overnight lull…The main cold front will begin to push into New England Monday where it will slow to a crawl and showers and storms will be triggered to ride up along the front across SE MA, up to to Boston for the morning commute. Some of these showers and storm could on and off all day along the front for the afternoon before the front finally pushes off the coast. Rain could locally be heavy with some localize flooding in the downpours across SE MA.

The front will push off the coast with dry comfortable air on the move for Monday night, which will last right through the midweek with sunshine, low humidity, light onshore winds and highs in mid 70′s inland, and 60′s at the coast. Welcome relief from the heat!

We will have to watch for a tropical low coming into the Gulf of Mexico next week. This could become Tropical Strom Andrea with moisture being directed up the east coast with the potential for scattered showers and storms for Friday though Saturday.

Overall looking at the extended range it looks like a wet pattern for the next 2 weeks for the eastern half of thee nation…Not an ideal set up or summer lovers.

Make the best of it today!

Let’s just consider this weekend a do over from the Memorial Day weekend shall we? The high summer heat is here and let’s make the best of it while it lasts! Not everyone will be seeing an official heat wave with 3 consecutive days with temps at or above 90. Many towns fell just short of 90 Thursday remaining in the upper 80′s. Towns like Groton, Attleboro, Taunton, and Nashua did reach 90 Thursday…so these communities will likely reach the threshold.

HEAT WAVE: Pools, Beaches | Tweet The Heat | Share Photos | Current Conditions

Lwr-mid 90′s yesterday in the sunshine, and there is not much change to the airmass today. Once again will see highs climbing to 90-95 degrees by afternoon with abundant sunshine. Even our eastern facing beaches will climb into the lwr 90′s. The Cape and Islands will be cooler with SW sea breeze with highs in 70′s and Lwr 80′s. A marvelous day for summer lovers…but please take care of yourselves with sunscreen, water, and finding cool spots over the course of the day.

A few stratus clouds will try to back in off the water overnight for SE MA. Skies will be partly cloudy overnight with lows holding in the 60′s near 70. The heat ridge on the east coast will begin to break down Sunday with an approaching cold front. Breezy SW winds will still keep it warm and muggy with high in the mid-upper 80′s nearing 90 inland….but the South coast will be considerably cooler in the 70′s with more clouds for the Cape where winds will be gusting to 25-30 mph ahead of the approaching front.

The Severe Storms Prediction Center has western New England in a slight risk for severe Thunderstorms for Sunday afternoon. Some storms will come with heavy rain, small hail and gusty winds out west. Most of us remain dry through the weekend. The front will make more progress eastward Sunday night into Monday where the front will get hung up over us keeping periodic showers and storms in the forecast. This front will push off the coast later Monday with building high pressure coming out of Canada…a beautiful comfortable airmass with low humidity in the 70′s.

June 1st marks the beginning of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Andrea may start to develop in the Gulf later this week..Something to watch for. June 1st marks the beginning of Meteorological summer. June, July, & August being the 3 warmest months of the year. June 1st marks the 2nd anniversary of the EF3 Springfield Tornado….on the ground for 39 miles, 1 hr 1 10 minutes, 1/2 mile wide. A weather event we will never forget.

We missed 90 in Boston…the high was 88…so we wait another day to achieve something that hasn’t been done since late last Summer. This also means that a heatwave in Boston in is jeopardy as well. Regardless, today was hot…the hottest day since August 31st of last year. Not much will change through the weekend, tomorrow we will see another offshore wind and this will bake even the beaches many will climb to between 90-95 degrees…making Friday the hottest of the stretch.

Over the weekend, winds will shift a bit to the SW from the W…this will bring more of an ocean influence into play on both Saturday and Sunday. The result will be slightly less hot temps namely for towns east of I-95.

Early next week a slow moving coldfront will slide through with numerous showers and thunderstorms…it will take all of Monday to get through but once it leaves the area early on Tuesday it will scour out the heat and the humidity and leave us with a spectacular second half of the week.

BOSTON (CBS) – They say that Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer, but we don’t always have the weather to go along with the saying.

Check: Interactive Radar | Current Conditions | Weather Blogs

This year, it appears summer will be making an early appearance. We are in for a 3-to-4 day heat wave, something more typical of July or August is coming in late May and early June.

Temperatures are forecast to reach a high between 90-95 degrees Thursday, Friday, Saturday and perhaps Sunday as well.

The last heat wave in Boston was way back on July 13-15th of 2012, the second and final heat wave of the year.

In order to have an official heat wave you need three consecutive days with temperatures reaching 90 or higher.

Speaking of 90 degrees, it has been quite some time since we hit that mark in Boston. August 31st of last year we hit 90 degrees on the nose, and that would prove to be the last time in 2012.

So we are talking just about 9 months between 90 degree days.

As hot as it will be over the next four days, we are unlikely to get any records. Here are the record high temperatures and their respective years they were set, you will notice a commonality.

May 30: 96, 1929

May 31: 96, 1944

June 1: 96, 1879

June 2: 96, 1895

Easy to remember, 96 degrees is the record for each of the next four days! I think we will make our closest run for the record books on Friday, when our current forecast high is 94.

As is typical during heat waves, the humidity will also be a factor. In the peak of the heat, during the afternoons, the heat index (the summer feels-like temperature) will be right around 100 degrees, so take it easy if you have outdoor plans.

A line of damaging thunderstorms is passing through the State tonight they are the leading edge of a very hot airmass that will camp out over New England through the upcoming weekend.

After the fog burns off tomorrow morning, blazing sun will heat us up into the lower 90s. Along with the heat a vortmax in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will provide enough of a trigger for isolated thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon…if they do form, they may be quite dangerous.

Related: Are You Prepared?

The heat will continue to build on Friday and will likely be the hottest of the four-day stretch with temps climbing into the middle and maybe even upper 90s. The record for Boston on Friday is 96.

Expect temps in the low 90s both Saturday and Sunday too except in SE MA and close to the coastline where winds won’t be as favorable for 90+ degree heat.

By Sunday evening and more so on Monday, a coldfront with several showers and thunderstorms will start to beat back the heat and bring us back to normal temperature and humidity level.

The last couple of days have been worth the wait…sun, comfy and warm…but changes are closing in fast and we’ll see our first taste of Summer conditions for the remainder of the week. That means heat, humidity, haze and thunderstorms…all the fixings!

Showers and storms will precede this very hot and humid airmass. Late tonight a warmfront will approach from the south along it and just south of it showers and storms will break out. It will be slow to move through the area which means the next 24 hours will be unsettled. Muggy air will begin working in late tonight and showers and even a few rumbles will be possible overnight through tomorrow morning’s commute. Following the first surge of muggy air clouds will attempt to break up and sunny breaks will emerge midday. With the sun comes warmer temps and instability which can lead to thunderstorms. The most sun will be found in Western New England and that’s where the most potent storms are likely to form…any storm that forms may have large hail, damaging wind, torrential rain and cloud-to-ground lightning. Storms will fade away after sunset tomorrow evening.

Once the storms depart, the gates will open up for some serious heat to build in. 90+ degree heat is likely Thursday through Sunday. This would mean an extended heatwave for some communities. The last time Boston had a high of 90 or better was last August 31st…the last time Boston had a heatwave was July 13-15 of last year…both will be possible later this week.

BOSTON (CBS) – The weather is shifting from one extreme to another over the course of only 5 days.

Check: Interactive Radar | Current Conditions | Weather Blogs

After record-breaking snows and unusually low high temperatures in parts of the Northeast last Saturday, the temperatures will nudge 90 degrees this Thursday and rise above 90 Friday through the weekend. It will be Boston’s first heat wave since July 13-15.

Just the thought of it tempts me to check out some flights to Anchorage, Alaska or Shannon, Ireland. Does anybody want to join me? It’s a more soothing climate there for us heat haters this time of the year. Plus, June is a fantastic time to visit Alaska because of the almost endless daylight. Oh well, daydream time is over. Guess I’ll just have to spend this afternoon installing the noisy air conditioners instead. Close the windows in your home and store this morning’s cool air inside. You can conserve energy and cut costs by delaying the start of the fans and air conditioning from Thursday to later Friday.

Transitioning from one air mass to the next usually involves some tricky weather. Already, we are seeing some thin feathery cloudiness appearing this morning. The sky will feature varying amounts of this cirrus cloudiness through the day with the thickest most likely later in the afternoon associated with the approach of the warm frontal boundary from the west. There is a bundle of rain in PA and southwestern NY early this morning. Most of this initial batch of moisture will slide southeastward and only clip western and southern CT during the afternoon. Meantime, additional showers and heavy boomers will be triggered across the Great Lakes and those will travel across NY later today and arrive in eastern MA just prior to daybreak.

The action is destined to impact a portion of the morning commute with the threat of stronger storms in places to disrupt the late afternoon homebound commute. In between, there should be a break when the clouds break for some sunshine tomorrow leading to a warmup into the 70s as the air becomes muggier.

Presently, it appears that the warm front will pass through by late tomorrow morning with a weakening cold front settling into the area late in the day to generate the potential nasty boomers. The cold frontal boundary will pretty much dissolve tomorrow night as high pressure at the surface and aloft builds over the Mid-Atlantic region. This will create a southwesterly breeze which will continue to pump the hazy, hot and humid weather into New England through most of the weekend. That wind direction will act as a natural air conditioner for south-facing coastal areas from the RI coast, Cape Cod, outer Cape Ann and down the ME coast. Temperatures in these places will be restricted from rising higher than 75-80 except 65-75 on the ME coast. The rest of the region will swelter in the heat of 90-94 degrees. Boston’s previous day at 90 degrees was on August 31 and the previous day over 90 was on August 3 at 92. The city’s record highs for the last 2 days of May and the first 2 days of June are 96 degrees for all 4 days. It is unlikely that those records will be broken but there is an outside shot of having close to a tie on one of the days. The humidity will become high to almost oppressive as dewpoints climb to the range of 65-70.

The next weather maker will be an approaching cold frontal boundary which will ignite a nearly solid band of showers and boomers marching across NY into northwestern New England late Saturday. This action will slowly shift southeastward across the rest of New England by later Sunday into Monday. Plan on a wet start next week followed by some refreshing air and sunshine taking control on Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will be back closer to the average for early June on those days with highs of 71-76.

Yesterday, severe storms belted parts of the central Plains. Mankato, KS received 5″ diameter hailstones! Today, there is the potential for more severe weather including a few tornadoes from western TX northward across western OK into KS and NE eastward into MO, southern IA to northern IL, northern IN, northern OH, southern MI and northwestern PA.

Todd Gutner will post his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

Well, that is a whole lot better isn’t it? I am always amazed at how weather can lift our spirits..especially after stretch of cool wet days like we just had. A perfect day to be with friends, family and the community today to appreciate all the freedoms we share together. Highs were able to climb into the Lwr 70′s in many spots today which felt marvelous! Tonight, skies will be clear, winds will be calm and another cool night should be expected. Dewpoints are in the lwr 30′s…so expect temps to go into free fall as the sun sets with lows dropping into the Lwr to mid 40′s. Downtown will hold near 50-55 overnight.

High pressure west of us currently will be sliding south of New England and pulling off the coast. Winds will be shifting to the SSE Tuesday. This will help to warm inland areas into the mid 70′s, but along the coast, light onshore winds will keep temps in the 60′s to near 70. Skies will start off sunny, but high clouds will be increasing from the west during the afternoon along with a warm front. Skies will be cloudy by sunset with showers and thunderstorms moving in towards midnight through the overnight hours. This warm front will mark the leading edge of the high heat which will be shifting eastward to end the week. With the front right over us Wednesday morning, showers and storms will linger, but eventually pull off the coast. Some of these storms may be strong and come with small hail. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will likely be triggered again during the afternoon hours. These have a better chance for locally severe weather to develop. This will all have to be watched. Wednesday is the transition, unsettled weather day this week.

Once this front lift out, as we have been advertising, a huge upper level ridge will begin to shift to the east and remain in place right through the weekend. Winds will be from the SW and will usher in unseasonal warmth for this time of year with the potential for some real stifling heat and humidity. Last year’s first heat wave came on June 20th. Just like we had unusual cold this Memorial weekend…now we will shift to unusual warmth this early in the season where it will feel like the middle of July! The heat will remain in place from Thursday to Sunday. Highs will likely average in the Upper 80′s to Lwr 90′s. Friday & Saturday will likely be the two hottest days. How hot it will get will depend upon the amount of sunshine. I can not completely rule out a brief late day T’storm any day…but there is not much of a trigger for storms with the ridge in place…but we will have the humidity…so isolated storms with peak heating will be possible…especially in western New England. The humid air will be coming right out of the gulf and directed right into the northeast for the end of the week. While the feel of summer sounds like a good idea…once it is here..you may be longing for the current airmass. This will be a little to hot to take…especially for those without AC.

It is important to note, with a ridge in the east and a trough in the west…more sever weather will be developing in the Plains and Midwestern states during the middle to end of the week. There is the potential for more tornadoes from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri to Illinois and Arkansas.

A cold front will slide towards New England on Sunday which will begin to break down the heat wave across the region. Late day storms will be firing in western New England and begin to shift to the coast Sunday night. The front will push through Monday with scattered showers and storms. The timing of exactly when this front will push through is still a bit uncertain. But we can expect Monday to break the spell hot spell with less hot air to follow, but temps still in the 70′s

The past three days have been quite a ride. We have seen a soaking rain give all our lawns and gardens the drink of water they have been thirsting for. The 2-4″ of rain in western New England will help to make the drought a forgotten memory. This storm brought in some of the coldest air we have seen this late in the season since about 1967, when we had a similar cold airmass with temps in the mid 40′s. And of course Snow in the mountains of VT and NH….not exactly the kind of weather you dream about for Memorial Day weekend.

Clouds remain today, but the rain is gone and that is making a huge difference. The low is currently hugging the coast of Maine and slowly lifting away. Abundant cloud cover remains in place with the effects of the Upper Low over us. Gusty WNW are wrapping into the back side of the low with gusts over 30 mph from time to time. Dry air is moving in on the back side too, so breaks of sun have been out there helping to lift spirits. Grab it while you can, because the instability remains in the atmosphere. Any sun will fade as the warmer rising air off the ground into the cooler air aloft will help to form building cumulus clouds. Clouds with the cool blustery winds will help to keep temps cool in the 50′s near 60 through the afternoon.

Skies will start off cloudy tonight, but clearing skies will settle in with building high pressure sliding from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic by Memorial Day. Another cool night an be expected with lows in the 30′s in the burbs and Lwr 40′s downtown. Breezy winds should prevent any frost forming. Bright sunshine Monday with give way to partly sunny skies by afternoon with popping fair weather clouds during the afternoon. Temps will respond to the sun and west winds by climbing into the upper 60′s and lwr 70′s as early as midday. A wonderful end to this weekend! A perfect day for going to a parade to honor all the brave soldiers we have lost, then celebrate our freedom with a cookout!

The sunshine will hold right through Tuesday. High pressure will pull of the coast with warmer SW winds which will bring temps well into the 70′s nearing 80. A warm front will approach Wednesday with a few showers or a brief thunderstorm. Once this front pushes through a huge upper level ridge shifts eastward and temps will sky rocket into the mid-upper 80 for the end of the week with increasing humidity. Each day with a risk of a PM T’storm. After a weekend where we have turned on the heat…by next weekend we will be turning on the AC’s. How quickly things can change here. While the unofficial start to summer has been temporarily delayed…it will arrive in force by the end of the week. Time to tuck this weekend into bed, and break out the summer weather gear!

The past 3 days have been wet, wet, wet! 3.85″ of rain in Pepperell through the duration! Most have seen rain totals of 1.5-3″. This is exactly what we needed to help alleviate some of some of the drought conditions which developed in April and May.

The Low remains parked off the coast tonight and is slowly meandering north. Rain and drizzle remain firmly entrenched over us tonight. Rain will begin to taper to drizzle after midnight. Breezy NW winds have picked up on the back side of the low. Cooler air is being directed into New England with these chilly winds. Temps will continue to fall into the 30′s tonight where rain will change to snow in the NW hills and Mountains. Elevations above 2000 feet will see over 6″ of snow in the mtns of Vermont! Quite remarkable for this time of year. This is the coldest Memorial day weekend we have seen since 1967 when temps we similar to where they are now in the mid 40′s.

Sunday will gradually become drier. Morning clouds, with some left over drizzle in the morning. Clouds will begin to break and lift for a few breaks of sun to emerge in the afternoon with breezy NW winds which could gust to 30+ mph. Highs will climb to the mid-upper 50′s nearing 60 on the south coast…where we should see brighter skies further away from the departing low.

Clearing skies will continue into Memorial Day with building high pressure, plenty of sunshine and warming west winds which will be able to push temps to near 70 or the Lwr 70′s by the afternoon. By Tuesday Highs will be in the mid 70′s with sunshine. We will be tracking a warm front on Wednesday which will come with clouds, a few showers or even a thunderstorm. This front will mark the leading edge of some real summer like warmth which will come marching eastward under a big upper level ridge which will be shifting east ward for the end of the week. Highs to end the week should be well into the 80′s with increasing humidity. Everyday has the slight risk of a pop up shower or thunderstorm. The summer warmth will remain in place for all of next weekend. So while the beaches are empty this weekend…they will be sure to fill up in the days to come!

A coldfront is sliding through the area…along it we’ve seen torrential downpours. These downpours will become fewer as the evening goes on but temps will be dropping into the 50s. The front will stall just offshore and an area of low pressure will develop. This low will be slow to move through leading to a stormy start to the holiday weekend. With the low just offshore tomorrow, rain will be refocused over the area. The wind will be gusty out of the NE making for very raw and cold conditions.

The low will continue to slowly chug north into the Gulf of Maine on Sunday. Winds will back a bit to the NW drawing in some drier air for the afternoon…so after a wet start, showers should end and skies will brighten.

Monday will be the pick of the three day weekend. The storm will be gone, NW flow will continue the drying process and there will be ample sunshine. It will be also be the warmest day of the three with highs between 65-70.

Next week looks great…Tuesday looks very pleasant with temps in the 70s and lots of sun. A warmfront will slide into view on Wednesday, this may trigger some showers or thunderstorms but after the passage of it, heat will likely build in and highs near 90 will be quite possible late next week.

Have a great weekend!

I will start off with the good news. It looks like this will be a great Memorial day with sunshine and temps climbing into the mid-upper 60′s. Great weather for the parades and honoring those that have given their lives for this country. Once the sun returns, temps will be well on their way to climbing into the 70′s for the midweek!

OK…now the bad news. This is no way to unofficially open up the summer season. Showers and storms last night dumped a widespread 1-2″ rainfall across the region. The ground is saturated, so any more downpours could start top give way to some localized flash flooding as streams will be quick to rise. Mild southerly winds have kept temps in the 60′s this morning and that is where they will remain this afternoon. Some areas may approach near 70. While the heaviest of the rain and storms has shifted off the coast, there is still a steady feed of moisture streaming up the coast ahead of a slow moving cold front. This front will trigger periodic showers or a thunderstorm through the afternoon and evening before stalling off our coast.

Winds will be shifting from the south to the NW later today as the front passes. This cooler wind direction will direct cooler air in from Canada. Along this stalled front off the coast and area of Low pressure will sit and deepen. The atmosphere will be stacked with a huge upper low capturing the surface low and slowly directing into the Gulf of Main over the course of the weekend. Showers continue tonight through Saturday…with rain heavy at times…especially inland. With rain and cool breezy NW winds on Saturday…highs will remain steady and chilly in the 40′s and Lwr 50′s. An additional 1-2″ of rain could fall by Sunday…with heavier amounts in the NW. Enough cold air could mix in Saturday night that snow will likely fall in the highest elevations of VT & NW on the backside of this low!

BY Sunday, the Upper low will begin to low lift out. Early showers should begin to taper off with clouds beginning to lift and break by the afternoon hours. I still expect Mostly cloudy skies with temps cool in the 50′s with breezy west winds…but the drier weather will be a welcome addition to addition to the weekend…By mid to late afternoon skies will be breaking are starting to fill with sunshine. By Monday, sunshine will be out in full with dry warmer west winds and highs climbing into the mid-upper 60′s

Thereafter, a huge upper level ridge will be shifting to the east coast allowing for plenty of sunshine and warming temperatures into the 70′s and eventually into the 80′s by the end of the week. Hang in there folks! This Weekend will be getting better before you know it!

As we approach the holiday weekend signs are pointing to a rough few days with numerous showers and much colder temps. A coldfront is approaching from the west and along it there are soaking thunderstorms. The greatest threat with these storms is the potential for temporary street flooding and rapid rises of small creeks and streams. The most prone are of the State to this flash flooding will be Central and Western MA. As this front moves into the picture an area of low pressure will develop to our south and move north through the course of the night with another shield of rain.

Friday will remain unsettled as the front stalls over the region and scattered showers and downpours will pop-up throughout the day. Temps will start out muggy and mild in the upper 60s but end up cooler in the lower 60s by the end of the day.

The front will stall just offshore and a strong piece of upper level energy will dive toward the East Coast. This will spawn a new low that will intensify quickly in our coastal waters. The low will spin up additional rain and create a raw NE wind putting Saturday in the washout category. Temps will barely clear 50 degrees.

The low will be stacked and there won’t be much to move it along…therefore much of Sunday is in jeopardy as well. Showers will linger for at least the first half of the day. Winds will start to back to the NW in the afternoon and that will bring in slightly drier air so hopefully the windshift will shut the showers off so we can salvage the second half of the afternoon.

Memorial Day will easily be the pick of the weekend…sunshine will return, although cumulus clouds will pop-up across the sky…but most if not all rain showers will retreat to the Northern New England mountains. Temps will reach the middle 60s on Monday.

While Eastern MA didn’t get into any sun today, the Western half of the State did and that lead to some more dangerous thunderstorms with one that crossed the Pioneer Valley getting Tornado Warned. There has been no report of a tornado but there was a report of a funnel cloud near Whately, MA. All storms have since weakened and the rest of the night should be much quieter.

We will once again wake up to clouds and fog tomorrow morning but a stronger southerly wind should help mix out the cloud deck so that we at least see a little sunshine during the midday. Temps will shoot up into the 70s and even close to 80 for some. Along with the warmth comes the threat for more severe weather…with the greatest threat in Western MA closest to an approaching coldfront.

That front will get hung up over us on Friday and with ample moisture available, periods of heavy downpours will be likely especially in Eastern MA. Temps will also be cooling off through the 60s as winds turn to the north.

An area of low pressure will develop along the front and slowly ripple north. Depending on how close the front settles to New England will ultimately dictate how much wet weather will linger over the weekend. But as of now, Saturday isn’t looking good with periods of rain and very chilly temps in the upper 50s. The storm will lift north on Sunday and lingering showers should taper off but sun may be tough to find…highs in the mid 60s. Finally by Monday, the pattern will improve enough to get a good deal of sunshine in here but don’t expect beach weather…highs in the upper 60s max.

It’s been a long afternoon and evening with strong to severe thunderstorms marching across the region. Today’s highs in the 80s along with high dewpoints aided in thunderstorm development. But it was a backdoor coldfront that tipped the scales and provided the trigger needed for dangerous storms to fire up. The atmosphere is still ripe for storms so more are possible during the overnight.

Tomorrow will start out foggy and murky but sun should burn through again and temps will spike up into the lower and middle 80s. This will lead to another storm threat in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday will be another warm and humid day but the wind direction may be a little more southerly…if that occurs, temps won’t be able to climb as high and the storm threat will be much less in the afternoon. But it could get interesting later in the night as a coldfront marches in with a strong line of storms from New York State. That same front will stall over New England and a wave of low pressure will develop along it. The result will be a very wet and much cooler Friday with periods of rain.

The storm will lift out but clouds will dominate the start of the weekend along with a gusty NW wind making for a brisk feeling Saturday. But as the weekend goes on sun will be the more dominant player and temps will gradually warm through the 60s close to 70 by Memorial Day.

It’s been a very sad night in the Plains as tornadoes have been touching down all evening and the news just keeps getting worse…our thoughts and prayers are with the folks who were in harm’s way.

Closer to home we experienced a Summery day with highs clearing 80 for some. But big changes are marching in…a coldfront is sliding south from Northern New England ushering in much cooler air. As this front slips through, clouds and dense areas of fog will form overnight. We will be on the cooler side of the front tomorrow and this means a gloomy, raw day with highs in the mid 60s. Low level moisture will be trapped on the cooler side of the front so drizzle will be possible too.

The front will then lift back north of the region on Wednesday and warm and humid air will surge back in. Thunderstorms will be possible simply due to the airmass but there won’t be much of a trigger so any action that does develop will likely be isolated. However, conditions become much more favorable for thunderstorms to form Thursday afternoon as the air will be warm and humid and we’ll have a trigger…a coldfront will provide lift for potentially severe thunderstorms.

The front will slide through Friday morning with some lingering damp weather but drier air will win out by the end of the day and the start of the holiday weekend. Temps will settle into a very comfortable range of 65-70 with a lot of sunshine to kick the weekend off. The second half of the weekend is as clear-cut but at this time there aren’t any indications for much more than a few pop-up showers at worst.

Clouds will be on the increase ahead of a warm front which will begin to push into New England later today and tonight. This front will help to trigger showers by the mid-late afternoon inland. These showers will spread east tonight.

Showers are moving through this evening with temps mostly holding in the 50′s overnight with a light south wind. Showers will begin to taper off after midnight. These showers are part of a warm front which will be pushing off the coast and opening the door for a warmer more humid airmass for Monday.

It will be a cloudy damp start to Monday. The warm front will push through with SW winds steering in a warmer more humid airmass into the region with highs climbing into the mid to upper 70′s nearing 80 degrees in spots by the afternoon. Clouds will begin to break and lift by the late morning, with partly sunny skies by afternoon. A cold front will sag from North to south late Monday which could trigger a few late day scattered showers or thunderstorm. I would not be surprised to see some isolated strong storms develop with the warm humid air ahead of this front.

This cold front will act as a backdoor front moving North to south, with A less humid airmass will settling in for Tuesday with temps remaining mild in the lwr-mid 70′s inland, and cooler breezes at the coast with highs in the 60′s. This front will stall right over us, with SNE being slightly warmer than NNE. This front could help to trigger a few late day showers inland…but I expect much of the day to be dry with Mostly cloudy to Partly cloudy skies.

By Wednesday, this stalled front will begin to lift north as a warm front and trigger a few more showers possible in the morning across the north. Humid air will again return to the region with temps climbing back inot the Lwr-mid 70′s in southern New England. This front will not be able to lift far north, and will be a trigger for few more scattered showers or storms later in the day. By Thursday, all of us will be engulfed in the warm humid sector behind the warm front. Highs again will be nearing 80 degrees with partly to mostly cloudy skies. A cold front will be shifting east late in the day which will likely trigger a round of some strong-severe thunderstorms in western new England. This cold front will still be pushing through Friday morning with a few lingering showers. Much cooler air will be drive in behind this front with NW winds and building high pressure for the Memorial Day Weekend. While it may not have a summery feel to the air…next weekend promises to have some nice sunshine and low humidity which will come as welcome relief after this changeable week of weather ahead.

The forecast continues to evolve with slight changes to timing of precip and temperature. It is a complex set up which will continue to be fine tuned with each coming day. Where the front is will have a direct impact on the wind direction and the temperature for any given location. Temps will be fluctuating along this wavering stalled front. Sometimes, there will be a few downpours…the timing of these can easily change in an extended forecast. So while there are a few things we will be ironing out during the week, we are confident that there will be some pretty nice weather to enjoy along the way in between the time of showers. Plus, confidence is high for good weather next weekend to kick off the unofficial start to the summer season.

A nice weekend to enjoy with high pressure sliding down from Canada and remaining parked off the coast through Sunday. The jetstream is steering NW winds aloft supplying a comfortable dry airmass with fairly typical temperatures for this time of year with highs in the Lwr 70s inland, and cooling onshore winds at the coast keeping temps in the 60′s at the beaches. Sunny to partly sunny skies for Saturday, as fair weather clouds should start to pop this afternoon, and may build just enough for an isolated shower.

Clouds will fill in tonight keeping lows mild near 50 overnight. Sunday will start off with clouds. With the high off the coast and light southerly winds at the surface, it will be a mostly dry day as well. Clouds will begin to break by midday for at least a little partial sun during the afternoon. Highs again will stay in the 60′s at the coast and some Lwr 70′s inland…depending on sunny breaks. Any breaks of sun could help to trigger a pop up isolated PM shower inland.

As a trough in the northeast begins to lift away at the end of the weekend, A warm front will approach Sunday night. This could trigger a few more light scattered showers through early Monday morning. Dewpoints will rise behind this front along with warming SW winds bring temps back into the 70′s for Monday with cloudy to Partly Sunny skies. It will be brighter and warmer by afternoon as we move into the warm sector.

An upper level ridge in place along the east coast will begin to weaken and flatten over us creating a more zonal west to east flow over New England which will help to slow the weather pattern down right over us. We will find ourselves in the dreaded “Transition zone”…the place where the cool from the north, and the warmth from the south face off. It can’t be good!

Tuesday will be a warm humid day with SW winds, rising dewpoints, Plenty of clouds and highs nearing 80. A cold front will sag to the south which will likely help to trigger late day showers and thunderstorms. This front will stall over us Wednesday with showers and cooler winds off the water which could bring temps back down into the 60′s.

By Thursday, the stalled front will attempt to lift back north with a very warm and humid airmass still in place, clouds, breaks of sun with highs back into the 70′s. A low from the west will be shifting east for Late Thursday and Friday and will come with the risk of triggering more scattered showers and thunderstorms into Friday.

Looking towards the weekend there are some complications with how it will eventually playout. The Euro model has an upper low swinging a trough into the northeast, merging with the southern stream and sweeping all the humidity and showers away for a nice cooler dry Memorial Day weekend with temsp in the 60′s. The GFS has the two streams not merged until Sunday, which allows for another round of showers to ride up the coast along with a developing low to keep the risk of showers into next weekend. This would not be the ideal way to kick off Memorial Day weekend. This would be quite a stretch of cloudy unsettled weather if this all comes to fruition. We could be looking at close to a week of clouds and periodic showers and storms. It won’t be rainy the whole time thoough.

Either way, enjoy the comfortable air this weekend. Warmer, more humid times will be arriving soon. This humidity is coming with abundant cloud cover, periodic showers, thunderstorms with the occasional downpours. It is an unsettled pattern which will last though next Friday at least. The Memorial Day Weekend holds promise…but we will have to watch which way the trends are heading…

High pressure is sliding in from the NW and this will lead to more great weather. Tomorrow will be the better of the two weekend days with ample sunshine and pleasant temps near 70…just like today. There will also be some seabreezes in the afternoon keeping most coastal towns in the 60s. The high will anchor itself offshore protecting most of New England from wet weather working in from the west on Sunday. If any are to get to us they would be focused over Western New England but almost all will stay dry this weekend. With the high offshore, there will be a more pronounced onshore breeze keeping temps in the middle 60s near the coast and close to 70 inland. We may not see any rain but we will have more cloud cover dancing in from the west.

Next week we see a bit of a pattern change with unsettled conditions setting up. Warm and muggy air will work in on the backside of the offshore high. Showers will be scattered on Monday with the passage of a warmfront. Heat and humid air will surge in for Tuesday and highs should eclipse 80…there will also be a good chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Have a good weekend.

Many hit 80+ today and that hasn’t happened in quite some time…the last time it happened in Boston was last Summer, September 14th…243 days ago! It won’t happen again tomorrow, cooler air is already flowing in and tonight many towns will fall back to the 40s. As we head into the weekend, high pressure will settle over us tomorrow and Saturday…this will lead to ample sunshine and diurnal puffy cumulus. There will be just enough instability for some pop-up showers in Northern New England and perhaps a sprinkle down here. Highs will be about 10 degrees cooler…around 70. Saturday will be very similar with a blend of sun and clouds, highs near 70 expect near the coast where seabreezes will keep towns in the 60s.

The highs will begin to slide east on Sunday and moisture will try to make headway into New England from the west. The high will attempt to stay strong and limit the forward progress of the moisture but clouds will increase and a few showers may sneak into New England especially out West.

Early next week, moisture will continue to close in on us from the west and also from the south…it’s a matter of time before some showers get in here and Monday looks like the day as a warmfront works up from the south. That warm front will be the leading edge of some very warm and humid air that is poised to flow in middle of next week. If it does get in here there will be a good chance of airmass thunderstorms.

Showers and a few thunderstorms rolled through this evening just ahead of a warmfront which represents the leading edge of much warmer air which will sneak into Southern New England aloft tonight and get mixed down to the surface tomorrow leading to some very warm temps.

Skies will clear out later tonight as a west wind starts picking up drawing in much drier air. The winds will be gusty tomorrow in the wake of the front and they will be blowing offshore, coming out of the hills and warming as they descend. Temps, under bright sunshine, will climb to around 80 in the afternoon. With the gusty wind and bone dry air, the brushfire threat will be very high and pollen levels be elevated as well.

Heading into the weekend, the pattern is looking uneventful. Surface high pressure will be working in and establishing itself over the Northeast. At the same time a cold pocket of air over the Canadian Maritimes will make the air a bit unstable. The result, diurnal cumulus clouds and scattered rain showers through Northern New England especially on Friday and Saturday. But, if you have outdoor plans over the weekend all are in good shape as temps will be pleasant inland near 70…cooler at the coast with seabreezes and three basically rain-free days in a row!

Next week is still up in the air as it’s yet to be seen how strong that high will be and where it settles offshore. There is a chance it could pump in some 80+ degree temps on it’s backside it anchored SE of New England.

We avoided major frost problems last night as clouds hung around only allowing a handful of communities to get down to the freezing mark. But we aren’t exactly out of the woods yet…skies are in the process of clearing and the air is still cold…thus scattered frost is likely again in the morning.

Sun will greet you early in the morning but warmer air working in aloft will create clouds and they will thicken up through the morning leading to overcast conditions in the afternoon. A warmfront will approach and pass through in the evening…ahead of it a few showers or sprinkles will be possible but along it a few heavier showers or thunderstorms are likely in the evening. The shower threat will be over by midnight as the warmfront moves north and a coldfront slides through. The coldfront will clear the coast by Thursday morning but cooler air will lag pretty far behind the frontal passage and therefore Thursday will be a very warm day with highs close to 80 with low humidity and a nice offshore breeze.

High pressure will try to work in from the west Friday through the weekend…this will lead to generally fair weather conditions and seasonable temps in the 60s at the coast and near 70 inland. There will be another cool pocket of air just east of us over the Canadian Maritimes…this will promote diurnal cumulus cloud development and the possibility of a few sprinkles especially Friday and Saturday but most of the time will be dry.

A bit of wind and a deck of clouds are keeping temps close to 50 degrees this evening but later tonight, skies will clear and the wind will settle and temps will take a dip. By morning they will settle down into the 30s and scattered frost is likely across the countryside. Most susceptible locals are away from the coast and outside of urban areas and in low-lying areas like river and stream valleys. Best advice is to bring in potted plants and cover others that are already in the ground.

After the chilly and frosty start, tomorrow will be another Autumn like day with highs close to 60 and that crisp feel despite the sunshine.

The chill will begin to retreat on Wednesday as warmer air from the west starts migrating east. It will first work in higher in the atmosphere…this will create an increase in clouds during the day and scattered showers will break out by evening as well. Surface temps will be on the rise Wednesday night and a surface coldfront will pass through early Thursday morning. The cooler air will lag pretty far behind the front giving temps on Thursday the opportunity to climb well into the 70s and perhaps even touch 80 degrees.

The warm up will be brief as a cooler airmass ruled by high surface pressure will build in Friday and through the upcoming weekend. At this time, temps appear to be fairly normal near 70 and raindrops should be tough to come by.

I expect this clearing line to continue to work itself west to east during the day with brightening skies, sun and clouds in place for the afternoon. Clouds will linger longer across SE MA and the Cape & Islands. With the increasing susnhine, temps will climb inot the upper 60's to near 70.

Another weak front will push through tonight, sweep away all the humidity and usher in a significant cool shot of air from the Great Lakes into the Northeast. Lows will fall into the 30′s in the burbs with clearing skies tonight. Lows will hold in the 40′s downtown with diminishing wind. Sunshine on Monday, with significant cold air advection diving into the Northeast with a trough in place across the Northeast. Cool air aloft will help for building daytime cumulus. Highs on Monday will be below average with highs only in the 50′s to near 60 with sunny to partly sunny skies and a breezy WSW wind.

Monday night will be quite chilly for this time of year. A freeze watch is in affect for much of SNE away from the coast. Some areas across NY, & PA will be dealing with a more significant frost and freeze with cold air fully entrenched across the Appalachian valleys. In New England it appear the best chance of a frost/freeze will be in our NW valleys…but I would not be surprised to see a few frosty spots from Bedford to Norwood to Taunton early Tuesday morning. This kind of cold can be a killing frost to the buds on some fruit trees so it is something farmers will be watching closely. You will wont to bring in any plotted plants if you live in these cold areas

Building high pressure for Tuesday with sunshine and seasonally cool temps in the upper 50′s and Lwr-mid 60′s. Temps will start to warm on Wednesday as the trough lifts out of the northeast back into the 60′s nearing 70. Clouds will increas in the afternoon ahead of a warm front. There will be a flatter flow to the jetstream for the middle to end of the week which will allow warmer air to flood back into New England with temps climbing back into the 70′s for many inland areas with a warming trend into next weekend.

There a few questions in the extended forecast as we have a few weak fronts which could trigger a few showers from time to time and a wind shift. We will have to track a wave of low pressure riding south of New england which could provide for some cooling showers Saturday. The GFS has a warmer look, while the Euro has a cooler look…so the confidence of timing and intensity of showers…along with the temperatures remains a bit low at this point. The Euro holds onto the cooler look for the weekend…while the Warm GFS camp keeps temps in the 70′s all weekend. This will have to be watched. Either way, it looks like a great stretch of weather is on the way!

Happy Mother’s Day to one and all. It can be thankless exhausting work. Just know that you are the backbone to every family. Your family is your life’s greatest work…and life’s greatest gift. Thank you for all that you do and have done! Your endless love holds it all together. Where would be without you?
