Neil Chayet

The familiar opening line “This is Neil Chayet Looking at the Law” has greeted listeners around the nation every day for more than 32 years. Since April 1, 1976, Neil has written and broadcast nearly 8000 one-minute features, reporting on legal decisions in an entertaining and informative fashion. As a wordsmith with a flair for puns and quotes, Neil often injects humor into his programs to the delight of millions of listeners. Looking at the Law™ is heard daily at 2:40 and 6:55 P.M. on Boston’s WBZ, NewsRadio 1030, and is distributed nationwide by the CBS Radio Network.

Neil has also appeared frequently on television, including a “Looking at the Law” segment on WBZ-TV in Boston. He has also been a guest on many national TV shows, including Oprah Winfrey, Montel Williams, Dick Cavett, and Nightline. Neil is also an accomplished public speaker and has delivered hundreds of speeches on law, medicine, media, and politics—and is the author of four books* and more that 60 chapters and articles.

A graduate of Tufts University and Harvard Law School, Neil is a member of the faculty of the Harvard Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry. He began his radio career as a result of serving on the task force for the Boston Strangler investigation, and working to draft the first community mental health law in the Country. He is also a member of the faculties of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts, and is on the Board of the Tufts’ Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. Neil is also member of the Board of Directors of MassINC, the Board of Advisors of MIT’s Whitehead Institute, the Massport Security Advisory Council, the Board of Visitors to the Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum, and the Board of Overseers of the U.S.S. Constitution Museum. He is also Vice President of the Harvard Law School Association.

Neil is President of Chayet Communications Group, Inc., which specializes in the building of what have become known as “deep coalitions” to deal with difficult issues of public policy in areas that include health care reform, mental health services, energy, and communications. He is also President of the Help Radio Network, where he is working at the intersection of law, psychology, and spirituality to help people and corporations deal with the root causes of anger and conflict.

Neil has three children and five grandchildren and enjoys the hobbies of sailing, fishing, cruising the coastal waters of New England, and model railroading. Neil and his wife Martha, along with their two cats, Dolly and Madison, live in Salem, Massachusetts in the recently restored Joseph Story House, built in 1811 for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Story, and listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
