Laurie Kirby

WBZAM_Laurie-Kirby_468x352Laurie Kirby is an award-winning journalist who came to WBZ NewsRadio 1030 in 1998, from WATD-FM in Marshfield, Massachusetts. During her time with WBZ NewsRadio in Boston, Laurie has won four Edward R. Murrow awards for Best Writing and Best Series in a Large Market, including another National Murrow Award for Best Series for her original work. Her favorite interviews include Hillary Clinton, President Obama, and Tiny Tim. Laurie spends some of her time at WBZ NewsRadio supervising the interns and training them to be the journalists of tomorrow. Laurie also hosts a daily segment on WBZ called “Women’s Watch.”

While News Director at WATD, Laurie’s mission was to inspire a small team toward a big goal: The National Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Small Market News Station in the United States. She was one of four recipients of the Overall Excellence award (along with the National Murrow award for Best Writing) to be asked to deliver a speech before the RTDNA National Convention in North Carolina.

Prior to working in radio, Laurie spent more than a decade in television, both on and off the air. She started her career at WCVX-TV 58, owned by the late Donald Moore, immediately after graduating from Syracuse University. Her news reporting of protests at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, gritty Cape Cod crime, and Massachusetts politics, earned her eight Associated Press awards. Laurie went on to write for a major Boston Television station, now WHDH Channel 7, for the nightly news. She was promoted to Special Projects where she produced and wrote longer segments for news series and special reports. Soon, her career went National. Laurie was hired as a writer, and then promoted to producer for the nationally syndicated program ” Real Life,” which offered her the opportunity to travel the U.S. for work on longer segments for national broadcast.

Laurie was also an adjunct professor at Emerson College for seven years where she taught broadcast writing to grad students in the Journalism Dept.

Laurie also is classically trained in Voice and Piano, but suggests you would much rather hear her sing. She also is proud of her Viking heritage, and is a proud dual citizen of the United States and Ireland.
