I thought it was illegal for tv channels to increase the volume during commercials. Lately it seems that when tv shows go to a commercial break the tv gets so much louder. We have had to resort to muteing the sound. Do stations increase the volume during commercials?

Robert Yankowitz, Chief Engineer at WBZ-TV, answered your question. “We do not deliberately increase the volume of our commercials. Some commercials have a high density of sound, and are adjacent to quiet programming or other commercials, and therefore tend to sound much louder. We have equipment in place that adjusts the sound levels as much as possible, and we are in compliance with all FCC regulations, but we are always trying to improve in this area.”
