State Police report that the single car crash happened on Route 6 eastbound in Dennis.

The person who was seriously injured was transported to Cape Cod Hospital.

The road was shut down at Exit 9 as accident reconstruction teams worked to figure out the cause of the crash. The road was expected to remain closed until about 5 p.m. All traffic was being diverted to Route 6A and Route 28.

State Police reported a one mile traffic back-up as of 4 p.m.

The carrier announced earlier this month that it would begin one daily non-stop flight from Boston to Nashville on August 12. But that service replaces Phoenix service that was the last market added at Logan in September 2010.

Southwest is being careful to upset as few customers as possible as it integrates Air Tran flights into its operations. The airlines share gates and counter space in Terminal E at Logan Airport. A new international reservation system is being put into place as the airlines combine operations.

Once Southwest completes the Air Tran merger, Boston passengers can look forward to more domestic flights to Atlanta and Orlando, former Air Tran hubs. The combined airlines will have about 25 percent of the US passenger count. At Logan, that figure is just over 10 percent, but is expected to grow.

Southwest is the number one airline serving both Manchester and Providence.

International flights will be added this year for the first time under the Southwest banner. The airline also wants to build an international terminal at Houston’s Hobby Airport that would open in 2015.

Next year the airline could look at connecting flights from Boston to Aruba, Cancun, Nassau, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic all of which are currently served by
non-stop flights on JetBlue Airways.

Even though fuel costs are down and passenger counts are up, Southwest will defer delivery of 30 Boeing 737-800 for up to four years. This will result in a saving of $1 billion.

Southwest has been profitable for 39 consecutive years and no other major US airline can make that claim.

The airline continues to promote flights from Boston, Manchester and Providence to Chicago in its current advertising on Red Sox baseball TV broadcasts. It is in major competition with American, JetBlue and United to Chicago. All of these carriers are targeting business travelers.

While Southwest is known for its low fares and no extra charges for an extra bag, the true low cost airline now serving Logan Airport is Spirit Airlines with even lower fares.

When it rains, treasures pop up in the dirt. That’s where someone found the 39-year-old’s wedding and engagement rings after a tornado cut a swath through this rural Massachusetts town on June 1, 2011.

But she and her husband, Harry, still have a mortgage on this land, and the coffee house owner comes to collect letters from their new mailbox. It’s the only repair they’ve made since the storm decimated nine houses on Bethany Road and 31 others in town a year ago.

Four tornadoes touched down in Massachusetts, destroying or damaging 1,400 houses and 78 businesses in the state’s western and central sections. Damage to insured property surpassed $200 million in claims. Three people died because of the storm, the state’s first tornado deaths in 16 years.

Monson, population 8,500, got a visit from the biggest twister. With 160 mph wind gusts, it came from Springfield, touching down in the heart of Monson’s downtown before crossing Bethany Road in one of the worst-hit neighborhoods.

As the anniversary of the destruction arrives, Bethany Road is still undergoing a facelift. There are five new homes on the street, and one more under construction. But empty lots remain in places where no building permits are pending.

Bald patches mar slopes where pine trees once towered. The rumble of trucks and buzz of saws drown out songbirds. New homes mingle with 100-year-old Victorians.

It was a makeover no one wanted. But Bethany Road residents are rising from the rubble.

For many people, the storm brought misery and stress. They lost belongings, had to haggle over insurance claims, and had to cram their families into temporary quarters.

For Fisk Bacon Jr., the tornado also brought heartache.

He and his 75-year-old wife, Joan, took cover in the basement of their Victorian at 4 Bethany Road when the tornado struck. Part of a local ball field dugout got stuck near their roof, and the two chimneys of Bacon’s childhood home tumbled onto his minivan.

But the worst came later.

Bacon’s wife of 58 years died the next morning, following a heart attack he believes the tornado brought on after she heard one of their sons lost his nearby home.

“I still can’t believe that my wife isn’t here,” the 82-year-old retired electrician said recently.

Historic maps show the Bacon family settled on Bethany Road by 1912. Fisk’s grandfather worked in the town’s granite quarry, and his father worked in the hat factory.

The block was first known as Pearl Street, probably getting a name change later because of the cemetery at one end, Monson Historical Commission chairman Dennis Swierad said.

Fisk Bacon Jr. lived through the 1938 hurricane and the 1955 flood on Bethany Road. While he said it won’t be the same after 2011, he believes the twister didn’t bring only bad.

“It seems like it brought a lot of people back together again. Everybody helped everybody,” he said.

Other neighbors agreed: The tornado cemented their sense of community as they pitched in to clear debris, make meals, and figure out what exactly to do next.

“It’s a different-looking Monson, but it’s still a beautiful Monson,” Town Administrator Gretchen Neggers said. “In many ways, it was even beautiful the day after the tornado because of the way the people came together.”

In Pia Rogers’ case, the storm also sparked a personal transformation. The mother of two started losing weight while combing through rubble, eventually shrinking from size 18 to size 6.

Her family will be moving to a house in Brimfield, while their lot at 14 Bethany Road will lay fallow for now. But Bethany residents still see the Rogers family as neighbors.

“The house looks great!” Rogers called out recently, before crossing the road to hug Debbie Meacham.

A new home rose into the sky behind them at 11 Bethany Road, where grass was just poking up in the yard.

The new bathroom cabinets were on the Meachams’ porch when the storm came, blowing them away with the rest of their 1898 Victorian.

Debbie and her husband, Dwight, had made their last mortgage payment in May 2011 and were wrapping up a remodel.

But when Dwight made it home after the tornado, the 60-year-old wiring and cable company supervisor called his wife to say it was just a cellar hole with water shooting out of it.

“It’s gone, Deb,” he told her. “Don’t even come here.”

They didn’t plan to rebuild, until a neighbor persuaded them. Construction on their new home started in October, but remnants from their old home reappeared from time to time.

Strangers mailed back paperwork that took flight during the twister, sometimes tucking in a $20 bill, Dwight said during a recent tour of the new house.

The couple has a $10,000 loan now, but their two-story Cape has upgrades that include more than one bathroom.

After about two months in their rebuilt home, the Meachams don’t have plans to mark the storm’s anniversary.

“I’d just like to forget,” Dwight said.

Up the block at 6 Bethany Road, neighbor Kim Slozak said memories of that day have been barging into her dreams.

When she heard the twister’s roar, Slozak grabbed her family’s kitten, Rex, and their Golden Retriever, Maggie, and hunkered down in a bathtub.

The storm sucked the 1870s Colonial off its foundation before dropping it in the wrong position. But Slozak and the pets made it out alive.

“Our house looked like a Dr. Seuss house,” the kindergarten teacher’s assistant said. “It was crooked.”

She and her husband Tony just moved into their newly-built house after nearly a year of living in a trailer with two of their three college-age children and Maggie.

The 12-year-old dog is sporting a lot more white whiskers since the storm.

“I think about that day now more. Some days I get really sad and sometimes I’m happy,” Slozak said during a recent interview on the family’s new back deck. “It’s all part of the process I guess.”

On one side of the Slozaks’ property, twin storage pods rested on a cleared lot. Their neighbor of three decades, Diana Robbins, said she was planning a tag sale to sell some of what she salvaged before the demolition of her 1901 Victorian at 10 Bethany Road.

From a window at the Slozaks, Robbins looked toward a church that lost its steeple, guessing how many years it would be before the storm-ravaged vista got its green back.

“As much as there was this destruction, there were just amazing opportunities for rebirth,” she said. “Over time, you will see a softening of the destruction you see right now.”

On the other side of the Slozaks’ property, Fisk Bacon Jr. descended the steps of his fixed-up home that day to make the half-mile trip to Bethany Roman Catholic Cemetery, where the road ends.

Joan’s grave is there. He visits every day.

With tick season under way, the state Division of Public Health is warning residents to take precautions to avoid being bitten. Lyme disease, which can lead to severe headaches, neck pain and other problems if untreated, is transmitted to people by infected deer tick. New Hampshire has one of the highest incidence rates in the country.

There were 1,300 cases last year, about 40 less than the previous year and significantly fewer than the high of almost 1,600 in 2008. Officials recommend that people avoid tick-infested areas, use appropriate insect repellent and check themselves and family members for ticks after being outdoors.

Flames broke out some time around 2:30 a.m. at Pine Hills Village condo complex on Tideview Path.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan says the fire started when a lit cigarette ignited the tubing for home medical oxygen in the first floor bedroom.

According to Plymouth Fire, several people needed to be rescued from balconies of the burning building.

Firefighters from Plymouth, Bourne, Kingston and Onset all responded to help battle the fire.

All five people who were injured were being treated at Jordan Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available, but their injuries were all said to be minor.

Red Cross volunteers were on scene helping about two dozen people who have been displaced by the fire.

Boston police say Friday afternoon, after being alerted by a McDonald’s employee, officers witnessed 46-year-old Sheldon McBynum spread across the service counter of the restaurant in Eggleston Square and shouting at workers to “get him a (expletive) cheeseburger!”

Officers say they advised McBynum to leave the restaurant, but he refused, became more belligerent, and attempted to push one of the officers.

At that point, McBynum was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct, Trespassing, and Assault on a Police Officer.

Police say he did not end up getting the cheeseburger he reportedly had been yelling about.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The memory of missing the playoffs for first time since 1996 and the ghost of an 18-year-old wound were wiped out with a sweep of rookie Adam Henrique’s stick.

The New Jersey Devils are going back to the Stanley Cup finals, thanks to Henrique, a 40-year-old goaltender and a coach who’d never been to the postseason in the NHL.

How’s that for a turnaround?

Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils defeated the rival New York Rangers, 3-2, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to advance to their first Stanley Cup finals since 2003.

“It means a lot,” Devils leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk said minutes after reaching the Cup finals for the first time. “It’s a great feeling. Last year was a tough one, but this year was totally different. We played well all year. The first round of the playoffs was a little tough but after that, I think we figured out our game and what it takes to win.”

After beating Florida, Philadelphia and their biggest rivals, the Rangers, only the Los Angeles Kings stand in the way of a fourth Cup for New Jersey.

The title round begins here Wednesday.

This series win came against the Devils’ most intense rival, and it was that much sweeter.

“That one was like Christmas,” said Henrique, who also scored the series winner in overtime as Devils’ first-round, Game 7 win over the Panthers.

It also was needed. The Devils blew a 2-0 first-period lead and didn’t want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

“It didn’t matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “We were at home. We just needed one shot.”

Actually, the Devils needed four shots to win the game.

Henrique’s winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot lay in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

“We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired,” said Devils coach Peter DeBoer, who was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons. “We found a way to jam one in. That’s the only way you’re going to score on Lundqvist. You’re not going to get a clean one. You’re going to have to work for it around the net.

“And that’s what we did.”

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring DeBoer. He has more than proved his coaching ability.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored to end it.

Henrique, who is nominated for the Calder Trophy — given to the NHL’s top rookie — skated away from the crease and jumped against the end boards in the corner as his teammates hopped off the bench and mobbed him.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

“When they scored, it was such an empty feeling,” said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. “It is shocking.”

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

“That’s playoff hockey, and that’s usually where you get an overtime goal,” Rangers veteran Brandon Prust said. “Just whacking away in front of the net, getting rebounds.”

Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

“You could tell he was in the zone. He led us,” Parise said. “He made some big saves tonight.”

Lundqvist’s best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied the game at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who assisted on both goals, made the big play to get New York back in the game. He collected the puck above the left circle, skated around the net and tried a wrap around. The shot didn’t go on goal but it turned out to be a perfect pass to Fedotenko who a tap-in into an open net at 9:47.

Callahan, who had a New York goal go off his leg in the Devils’ 5-3 win on Wednesday, tied the game at 13:41 when Dan Girardi’s shot from the right point deflected off his leg into the open lower corner of the net. Callahan’s sixth of the postseason was set up when Brandon Dubinsky won a faceoff in the left circle.

Carter, who scored the game winner in New York on Wednesday night after the Devils blew a 3-0 lead, put New Jersey ahead again at 10:05 of the opening period.

The play started with a bad pinch at the point by Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Steve Bernier led a 3-on-1 and found Stephen Gionta coming down the middle for a solo chance against Lundqvist. The Rangers goaltender stopped the shot, but Carter swatted the rebound home for his fourth of the playoffs.

Kovalchuk’s seventh goal of the postseason and fifth on the power play was a thing of beauty. All five Devils skaters touched the puck with tape-to-tape passes with Zubrus finding Kovalchuk alone low in the left circle for a shot that Lundqvist had little chance to stop.

The Devils — as is the tradition for many Cup finalists — did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy that was presented at center ice. As the team skated off to their locker room, “Glory Days,” the 1984 hit from New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen serenaded them.

The game was played on the 18-year anniversary of the Rangers’ dramatic, 4-2, Game 6 victory over New Jersey at the Meadowlands, a victory that pushed that classic Eastern Conference final series to a Game 7 and eventually led New York to its first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That game, of course, was preceded by a guarantee from Rangers captain Mark Messier, who delivered three goals en route to the victory.

This time, though, there will be no Game 7.

NOTES: The Empire State Building’s tower lights were lit in red and blue on Friday to cheer on the Rangers. … Mogul and TV personality Donald Trump was at the game. … Devils C Travis Zajac left the ice briefly in the second after being slashed on the left hand by Prust. The Department of Conservation and Recreation says the Memorial Day weekend also marks the opening of many of the state’s ocean and inland beaches, together with wading pools and campgrounds.

The pools and beaches are free, though parking fees range from $5 to $9 at some beaches.

Most wading pools will be open on weekends through June 23, when all wading pools and state-run swimming pools will be open seven days a week.

The state runs 29 campgrounds, with fees ranging from $6-$15 per night for Massachusetts residents and $8-$17 for out-of-state campers. The state recommends that advanced reservations be made for campgrounds, especially on weekends.

Someone reported to police that they had seen James Judge looking at inappropriate photos of young boys.

Responding officers say they found Judges sitting at a computer with a picture of a nude young boy on the monitor. Police say they obtained a warrant and found additional evidence on Judge’s phone and the library computer.

Judge is charged with downloading, viewing, and printing those pictures to disseminate. He’s out on bail.

Medford police say Judge is also the subject of a federal investigation by the US Postal Inspection Service over the same type of charges.

     I can almost….yes almost understand… when someone’s opinion on a controversial issue evolves…….i.e. BHO on gay marriage.  Years ago, when running for office in an ultra-liberal district he was in favor.   A couple of years later when running for the  U.S. Senate, in order to win…he was against it.  Nobody else can get a “pass” on the subject….any change “you’re a flip-flopper.”  But not BHO. Hampton police say they executed a search warrant on Thursday at the Deja vu Boutique and seized handbags with labels such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Coach.

Police returned the following day and charged store owner Terry Shore of Hampton. He will make a court appearance on the misdemeanor charge in late June.

Police say brand-name handbags normally sell for hundreds to several thousand dollars each, but that the store was selling them for prices ranging from $45 to $90.

The Massachusetts Prevention Alliance wants the Supreme Judicial Court to change the wording of the ballot question. They claim the current wording hides major parts of the proposed law, such as the network of marijuana dispensaries that would have to be created to comply with it.

But on Friday, Coakley’s office filed a motion to dismiss the petition. Her office says the alliance’s petition failed to offer a valid way for the court to grant its request, such as by proposing another way to write the ballot question.

The Boston Archdiocese said Friday that it’s removed The Rev. Joseph Byrne from public ministry pending an investigation. The archdiocese said the retired priest had “limited ministry” at St. Patrick’s Church in Falmouth.

The archdiocese said the new allegation against Byrne dates to the early 1970s, but was just recently reported.

In June 2005, Byrne was sentenced to five years probation after pleading no contest to embezzling $135,000 from Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted parish in Waltham. Prosecutors said between 1997 and 2000, Byrne transferred parish funds to his bank account and made purchases from accounts containing parish money.

Attempts Friday to reach Byrne weren’t successful.

The front will push off the coast tonight with light northerly winds to follow, which will direct cooler and less humid air from Canada. This will be quite refreshing! Skies will clear tonight with temps dropping into the lwr-mid 50′s overnight. As high pressure builds in towards Northern Maine and a front stalled south of New England, we will wake up to a beautiful morning Sunday with clear skies and nice clean air with low humidity. Sunshine will be able to hold for most of the day. Highs will not be as warm but still in the 70′s near 80 inland. Cooler winds out of the SE will cool the beaches keeping temps in the 60′s and Lwr 70′s at the coast. Tal about relief. High clouds increase later in the day. The stalled front south of New England will begin to lift north as warm front Sunday Night with thickening clouds. Warm humid air in the Mid-Atlantic overriding the cooler drier air in place over will help to create the developing cloud cover. A cluster of thunderstorms will ride along this boundary Sunday night into early Monday morning before pushing off the coast. These storms will come with some locally heavy rain and lightning. By Monday morning, abundant clouds will be in place, which showers exiting the Cape by mid-morning. The humidity will be increasing with this stationary front stuck right over us. On the warmer side of the front in the CT river valley, highs will be in the 80′s. On the cooler side of the front, highs will be in the Lwr 70′s and even 60′s at the coast with light and variable winds which will turn onshore. Most of Memorial Day will be dry. Morning clouds will erode to some partial PM sun inland. A few scattered storms may try to pop late in the day in the NW. So for most…improving weather during the afternoon on Monday. A pretty great weekend overall!

The weather pattern will remain warm and humid from Tuesday into Wednesday with periodic showers and Thunderstorms  from time to time. The stationary front goes nowhere Tuesday… Still stuck over us, keeping clouds in place with showers and thunderstorms which should become more numerous one the cold front begins to push towards the coast Tuesday night into Wednesday. subtropical storm Beryl formed off the coast of the Carolinas last night. A week ago, we were talking about tropical storm Alberto. It is pretty rare for two tropical storms to form this early in the season…before Hurricane season has begun. In fact it has only occurred 2 other times in recorded history.

Since hurricane record keeping first started in 1851, two storms have formed before June 1 only twice, said Dennis Feltgen, center spokesman for the National Hurricane Center. The first time was in 1887, or 125 years ago, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president; storms formed on May 15 and 17.The other was in 1908, or 104 years ago, when Theodore Roosevelt was president; hurricanes emerged on March 6 and May 26.

Despite the early uptick in activity, that is not necessarily a sign for an active hurricane season. In fact this week, NOAA released their forecast for a near normal active season ahead. Activity should be falling off near the peak of Hurricane season as El nino begins to form in the eastern equatorial Pacific.

Meanwhile here at home, we are still looking at an unsettled and possibly wet pattern to continue into the first week of June. Good news as we continue to make strides in easing the short term drought conditions across New England.

There is a perception: “as Rondo goes, the Celtics go.”

But Rajon Rondo doesn’t agree with that.

“That’s a lot of pressure,” he said when asked if he heard of the saying. “ I’ve heard it before. I don’t know if it’s true. We’re one of the few teams in the NBA where all five guys contribute. We’re not just a one, two man show. We’re a great team.”

While the Celtics can usually win without Rondo at his best, it doesn’t make things easy. When he is on – moving the ball, driving to the basket, and stealing rebounds from much bigger bodies – the Celtics are near unstoppable.

But as the playoff grind starts to wear on the elder Celtics, they are relying more on their 26-year-old playcaller. When he struggled in Game 6, so did the flow of the Celtics offense.

But Rondo is confident all of that will change Saturday night.

“We haven’t got it done yet, but we will [in Game 7]. I think that’s our mindset, our focus, and our intentions coming into the game,” he said confidently. “We’re going to make sacrifices and make plays.”

Some would say that is as close to a guarantee as you can get without actually guaranteeing a victory. That would be Rondo’s second of the playoffs, as he said it felt “like we had won the series” after the C’s Game 2 win over Atlanta in the first-round. Some see it as a little bit of cockiness, which is not a horrible thing for Rondo to have. His nickname is “swag” in the Celtics’ locker-room after all.

But what the Celtics need most is a confident Rondo. With injuries and mileage adding up, the responsibilities are mounting on him. For this winner-take-all affair, he needs to get everyone involved in the offense with his head-spinning passing, take on scoring with Ray Allen seemingly on last leg, and amp up his defense without the services of Avery Bradley.

Taking Bradley’s spot as defender numero-uno , or slowing Jrue Holiday and Lou Williams who both had their way with Rondo and the Celtics defense in Game 6, may prove to be the most difficult.

“[Bradley’s] ability to guard the best guard, at one or two, had really taken so much pressure off of Rondo in particular,” Rivers said of his absent shooting guard. “Not having him means Rondo goes back to that role and running the team, and that’s hard to do. Especially against the team we’re playing who has two guards that attack. Rondo doesn’t have a lot of breaks.”

But the responsibilities shouldn’t fall solely on Rondo. Keyon Dooling and Mickael Pietrus also need to step up off the bench; Dooling with some offense, and Pietrus on both ends of the floor. Rondo can do just about everything, but that doesn’t mean it should all fall onto his shoulders.

Some would say he took Wednesday night off, proving the “as Rondo goes” adage a bit. The bottom line is Rondo has the ball in his hands, and needs to be the one to start the Celtics offensive attack. The offense goes through him, and he dictates what they do. The C’s won’t need one of his spectacular triple-doubles (although that would be nice), but they need a focused and confident Rondo taking the floor Saturday night.

The Celtics will need a full team effort to win Game 7, but it all starts with Rondo.

Damon Amedolara, who you usually hear from the sidelines, is filling in for Brad Feldman this weekend, tabbed with play-by-play duties for a soccer match for the first time in 11-years. The last time DA had the call for a Futbol game was an A-League Rochester Rhinos game when he was just out of college.

As for the Revolution, they’ll be looking to keep their two-game unbeaten streak alive, and avenge an early-season loss at the hands of the United. DC beat the Revs 2-1 back in April, and own a 26-23-8 record all-time against New England.

Some Revolution players to watch in this weekend’s match are forward Saer Sene, who has six goals in 10 appearances for the Revs this season — including two last Saturday against Houston — and Shalrie Joseph, who has four career goals in 26 appearances against the United.

At 4-6-1 on the season, the Revolution currently sit in a tie for sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 13 points. The United sits in second with a 7-4-3 record and 24 points.

PLYMOUTH (CBS) – The federal government has given the green light to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power plant in Plymouth for another couple decades, despite objections from Governor Deval Patrick and Attorney General Martha Coakley.

“It makes me a little nervous,” says Plymouth resident Barbara Smith, who lives a mile from the plant. Neighbors have been concerned since the disaster in Fukushima Japan, where a tsunami caused hydrogen explosions, reactor meltdowns, and mass evacuations. That plant happens to be the same design as Pilgrim.

Opposition Groups have several legal challenges in the works, questioning safety procedures and environmental impact. Friday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced it will renew Pilgrim’s license to operate for 20 years anyway. “One hope I have is from the spotlight being on this litigation process for license renewal and Fukushima, that the public will start becoming active today as opposed to radioactive tomorrow,” says Mary Lampert, who heads a group called Pilgrim Watch.

Governor Patrick calls the decision “extremely troubling.”

Earlier this week, Pilgrim shut down because of a faulty valve, but was expected to be back on the grid by the weekend.

NORWOOD (CBS) – Norwood Police are searching for a man who assaulted a 20-year-old woman as she walked out of an apartment complex on her way to work early Friday morning. Police say the man, dressed distinctively in black, was walking toward the woman on Buckminster Drive when he suddenly grabbed her.

“As they passed each other, he put his arm around her neck, got her in a headlock, and a struggle ensued,” said Norwood detective Richard Giacoppa. “She started screaming to defend herself and break free from the hold.”

Defend herself, she did, with defensive wounds on her hands. “She had something in her hand and she was using it to hit him. I can’t comment on what it was because that’s part of the investigation, but she had something in her hand,” said Giacoppa.

It was enough to break free, but police say she fell to the ground and that’s when the attacker grabbed her by the ankle and tried to pull her into nearby bushes. A neighbor across the street heard the woman’s screams, and police say when he opened a window the commotion was enough to scare the man off. “Anybody who finds themselves in that situation should make as much noise as they can and don’t go easy,” said Giacoppa.

The attacker is described as a white male in his mid to late twenties. Police are urging residents in the area to be more cautious when they’re out walking, especially in the early morning and late evening hours.

Neighbor Maria Malpignano says she’ll now walk her dog a little earlier than usual. “To be out when it’s lighter instead of waiting until it’s dark. It is pretty dark around here at night,” she said.

CANTON (CBS) – For some of us, exercising is running, yoga or weight training. For CrossFit athletes, it’s all of the above.

The CrossFit Regionals are in Canton this weekend and they’re drawing a big crowd. It’s not just extreme exercise; CrossFit is the newest, and one of the fastest growing sports in America.

It’s a program that combines strength with speed and flexibility. 700 athletes from across the northeast are competing at Reebok’s headquarters.

Some compete individually, others on teams.

The top three men and women and the top team will move on to the CrossFit Games in California. The winners of those games receive $250,000.

That same front will return as a warmfront on Sunday and stall right over us.  In my opinion, it will take some time to saturate the air and therefore most showers and thunderstorms will hold off until later in the day and evening.  This means that most of the day will be dry with a sun and cloud mix.  Temps inland should be close to 80 and at the coast in the 70s…not too bad though.

The front will become very active Sunday night and early Monday morning as a cluster of thunderstorms from the Great Lakes follows the path of the front into New England.  Most of the time, thunderstorms fade during the night but the large contrast in temperature across the frontal plane will keep these going and rumbles may awaken you at some point.

Most of that action should be gone first thing but timing these clusters is tough and may linger into the mid-morning on Memorial Day.  After that, clouds will break for some sunny breaks (except on the Cape and over some coastal towns with onshore winds) which may lead to another pop-up shower or storm later in the day.  Highs with the onshore component should stay in the 70s (except 60s Cape & Islands).

As you can see, not one day is going to be a washout and most of the time will be rain-free with temperatures well above the normal of 70.  Enjoy the long holiday weekend.

LYME, NH (CBS) – New England’s only bear sanctuary has some new additions.

Two baby bears were trapped Thursday and brought to Ben Kilham’s property in Lyme. Their mother had been hit by a car, leaving them orphaned.

The bear cubs are the 11th and 12th cubs brought to the sanctuary this spring. That’s about double the number of bears Kilham usually takes in.

”It’s a labor of love”, he says. “But this is extraordinary. It’s a lot of extra love.”

Kilham says the large number of orphaned bears is probably linked to the warm spring. In a normal year, they would have frozen to death. Instead they get a second chance on Kilham’s eight acre enclosed refuge.

The bears will stay with him for a year and then be released to the forests of Northern New Hampshire.

Kilham takes in bears from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. He doesn’t get paid and relies on donations and his own money. Each cub costs about $1,500 to feed, house and care for.

He says the large number of bears is a stress, but he’s fascinated watching them interact.

LEOMINSTER (CBS) – On Friday morning, officials discovered Leominster’s newly renovated $5 million Doyle Field vandalized. The field, the building, the plaques and signs were all damaged.

It was all done in red paint, right before graduation, with the numbers 2012, 2015, and FHS for rival Fitchburg High School.

Victoria Valeri, a senior at Leominster, came to see it for herself. “I think it’s ridiculous. We spent a lot of money on this field. I don’t think even we would do something that extreme. It’s kind of disappointing.”

It hits hard for Gil Donatelli, who chairs the Doyle Field Commission. He spent years working to raise the funds for the renovation.

As he was surveying the damage, he got a surprise visit from about a dozen Fitchburg High Students. They heard what happened, and wanted to come make a face to face apology.

Liana Boulay says, “We just wanted to see what went on because it’s really embarrassing. It makes Fitchburg High look bad. We’re shocked someone would do something like this right before graduation.”

Abby Locher says it’s sad that a few people are ruining the reputation of her school. “I was shocked and embarrassed that anybody would come here to do that. This is an amazing field; it’s much nicer than ours. We love it here and it’s sad that people come here and vandalize it like this.”

For Donatelli and others in Leominster, those words go a long way.

Donatelli says, “I was touched by the Fitchburg student body, both male and female, coming down here with tears in their eyes that it occurred.”

Valeri has a new view of her old rivals. She says, “It shows they have respect for us and we should have respect for their school too.”

On Friday afternoon, six Fitchburg High School students turned themselves in, admitting to the vandalism. Police say at this point no criminal charges have been filed.

BOSTON (CBS) – Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of clam shack season.

ARLINGTON (CBS) – School buses roll into the Museum of Fine Arts so students can learn about art and culture. But Thursday, an Arlington High field trip went awry thanks to a couple of students.

The group of sophomores was touring the Art of Americas wing when a student breached security, ducked under the rope and jumped on a bed that dates back to the 1800′s.

Jillian Winstanley was on the field trip and says she’s disappointed a few kids ruined such a great opportunity.

“It was a great experience, I had never been to the MFA, my friends hadn’t either. It could’ve been a great time but I’m disappointed a few kids ruined the entire thing,” says Jillian. “You just have to think twice and use your common sense.”

Luckily nothing was broken, but the Arlington students caused enough of a problem that they had to be escorted out. The superintendent says it’s all under investigation.

Word of kids not respecting art is especially troubling to Elizabeth Minzes and Nicole Drehar. Elizabeth works at a museum and says, “I’m someone who loves history preservation so it’s important to me, so hearing something like that, history being destroyed cause someone wants to jump on a bed.”

Drehar adds, “They’re at that age but you have to be respectful of the art. Maybe they’ll be next time if they’re allowed here again.”

It’s a lesson in respect and consequences, three students face suspension.

The Arlington superintendent of schools tells WBZ that museum officials complimented the majority of the students who apologized to the museum for their classmates’ regrettable behavior. She says Arlington high is invited back to the museum.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee says former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s video gaming company is again in violation of a loan guarantee agreement with the state after it failed to notify state officials of mass layoffs.

Schilling’s 38 Studios laid off its entire workforce Thursday after missing its last payroll and defaulting on a $1.1 million payment to the state Economic Development Corp. It later made the payment.

The company was lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 after the EDC approved a $75 million loan guarantee.

Under federal law, employers who have at least 100 employees and plan to shed at least 50 jobs are required to give a 60-day notice to workers and state unemployment officials.

The EDC was in disarray Friday after its executive director and board vice chair resigned.

The project is a collaboration of the city of Boston and the National Park Service.

Among those on hand to celebrate the opening on Friday were U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano.

Menino praised the work saying, “Debates and forums are still held upstairs, so I think Mr. Faneuil would be very proud of today’s Faneuil Hall.”

The historic hall has hosted key events in the nation’s history, from the American Revolution through contemporary political debates.

Officer John Gallagher was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a call for a bank alarm back on May 25, 1962.

On Friday, members of the Boston Police Department honored Gallagher at the location where he was killed, 540 Commonwealth Ave.

A Hero Sign was dedicated in his name.

The two-year-old girl fell about 30 feet from an apartment on East Main Street Tuesday night. Responding police officers and EMS workers found the child lying motionless on the ground with severe head trauma.

The girl was rushed to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island. She was pronounced dead Friday afternoon.

Police are calling it a tragic accident and have not filed any charges.

It’s called the Pool Protector, and is primarily geared toward families who have pools and children.

The Pool Protector is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds a loud pulsating alarm when something or someone falls into an unsupervised pool.

“I think we’ll come out with a great sense of urgency,” captain Paul Piece said prior to the team’s practice on Friday. “It’s Game 7; there is no tomorrow. In order for us to advance we have to give it our all, we have to give everything we got. We need everything from everyone that steps out on that court and understand this could be the season. We have to play like a desperate team, regardless if we’re at home or not. The team that wants it the most is going to get it.”

Celtics Talk Game 7: 

“We haven’t got it done yet, but we will tomorrow,” said a confident Rajon Rondo. “I think that’s our mindset, our focus, and our intentions coming into the game. We’re going to make sacrifices and make plays.”

The Celtics may be the higher seed and have the luxury of playing on their home court, but they do not have the luxury of youth or health. Avery Bradley is done for the playoffs, leaving Boston without one of their younger and more energetic players on the floor. The Sixers guards took advantage in Game 6, as both Jrue Holiday and Lou Williams had their way, especially late in the fourth quarter.

But the Celtics have dealt with injuries the entire season, and now that it’s crunch time, they’ll continue to do the same.

“I don’t even try to have our guys look at challenges. It is what it is, and we play,” said head coach Doc Rivers. “We play tomorrow night, we play at home, and we have to win the game. Forget all the other stuff. The stuff can’t play against you; you have to go play against Philly.”

“I’m very confident in this group. I’ve said it before; this is as good as a group I’ve coached as far as they have a way of getting ready,” said Doc. “Let’s hope it continues to go.”

In Game 6, 17 Celtics turnovers turned into 19 points for Philadelphia. They lost the 50-50 battles that had gone their way in Game 5. Now with one game deciding everything, the Celtics will have to limit their mistakes, and win those battles.

“I think seven games in you have to make sure you minimize your mistakes. You can’t be beat by game plan mistakes, turnovers; all those small little things,” said guard Ray Allen. “You give away a point here, two points here, an illegal defense; you win by three, four points, or even one, you look at all the small little things early in the game that caused that outcome.”

Asked if there is more pressure on his team, with the eighth-seeded Sixers entering the must-win with a “nothing to lose mentality,” Rivers scoffed at that notion.

“I don’t think any team has any more or less pressure than any other team,” said Doc. “I always laugh when I hear we have nothing to lose when you’re the other team. Yeah you do. You go home if you lose; you have a lot to lose. I think in Game 7s, both teams have the exact same amount to lose, and win.”

Doc On Game 7 Pressure: 

While they might be feeling some pressure, the Celtics won’t be lacking motivation come Saturday.

“Game 7, what else could you ask for?” said Pierce. “If this isn’t the most important thing to you right now there is no other way to motivate basketball players. Nobody wants to end the season now. We have a great opportunity to advance, go to the Eastern Conference Finals on our home court; that’s all the motivation we need right now.”

BU’s Kedzie Chase Teller (fittingly a “Chaser”) and Emerson’s Allison Gillette (a “Beater) are two of the 21 first-stringers on the team. Emerson’s Rebecca Der (a “Beater”) and Brendan Stack (a keeper) are two of the 21 reserves.

The International Quidditch Association said they selected the group based on their “skills on the pitch and ability to be a good ambassador for the sport and the United States.”

The Quidditch tournament will be held at the Olympic Expo Games, just before the actual Olympic Games. Quidditch is not an official Olympic sport.

Real-life Quidditch is a modified version of the game played in the Harry Potter books and movies. The fast-paced game is played with three different balls and every player must have a broom between his or her legs at all times.

Brown said Friday the school may have violated federal guidelines by making the claim on mandated diversity statistics in an apparent reference to Democratic rival Elizabeth Warren.

Warren has said she wasn’t aware Harvard was promoting her as Native American, but the Boston Globe reports the statistics are typically based on how employees describe themselves.

Warren says her mother told her of her Native American heritage, but her campaign has been unable to offer direct documentary proof.

Catholic attorney Victoria Reggie Kennedy gave the keynote speech at Friday’s graduation ceremony. She also urged graduates to make progress by finding common ground with people as she said her late husband did.

Kennedy had been scheduled to deliver this year’s commencement speech at Anna Maria College in Paxton. But the Catholic college rescinded the invitation under pressure from a bishop who objected to Kennedy’s public support for abortion rights and gay marriage.

Seven protesters picketed outside, carrying signs saying: “BC Honors Abortion Defender.”

School officials say they weren’t conferring an honorary degree on Kennedy, whom they say is committed to social justice.

The tiny, brightly colored packets are marketed as a way to get rid of the mess that comes with bulky bottles and boxes. But doctors say children can confuse the packets with candy.

The Northern New England Poison Control Center took three calls in March, eight in April and two this month involving children either trying to eat the packets or getting the detergent in their eyes. Dr. Karen Simone, the center’s director, says in the latter scenario, the most important thing for parents to do is to begin flushing the eye with water immediately rather than going to the doctor or hospital.
