CAMBRIDGE (CBS) – One teenage girl was killed while another was wounded in a double shooting outside a home in Cambridge Sunday night.

Sixteen-year-old Charlene Holmes and 17-year-old Tanya Lee Cotto were shot while they were sitting on a porch at a residence on Willow Street just after 8 p.m.

Police say the girls had stopped to say hi to a couple on the porch when a drive-by shooter opened fire.

“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Holmes’ father Roland Holmes said as he choked back tears.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where Holmes was pronounced dead. Cotto is in critical condition.

“It’s a tragedy… Day in and day out, police are called because of this building. Kids hanging out drinking, drugging,” said Cheryl, a neighbor.

Holmes was a student at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Cotto, meanwhile, was set to graduate from the school on Thursday.

Cambridge police officers are handing out flyers in the neighborhood asking anyone with information to pass it along.

No arrests have been made.

BOSTON (CBS) – A Massachusetts veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has filed a civil rights lawsuit against an anti-war activist who declined to rent him an apartment.

Sgt. Joel Morgan, 29, tried to rent a two-bedroom Dorchester apartment from 63-year-old Janice Roberts.

Morgan didn’t get the apartment. According to the lawsuit, Roberts told him his war service and her peace activism presented a “conflict of interests.”

“Because of what you told me about the Iraq war… we are very adamant about our beliefs… it’s just not comfortable for us… and I’m sure now that you know this, it would not be comfortable for you,” Roberts said in a voicemail. “I would suggest you do the right thing and look for a place less politically active or controversial.”

The divorced father has a young son, is training to be a Boston Firefighter and needs to live in town.

WBZ was not able to reach Roberts for comment. Morgan has since found another apartment to rent.

Brown played his entire, 15-year career with the Pats after being drafted in the eighth round of the 1993 NFL Draft.

As a wide receiver, punt returner and defensive back, he helped the team win three Super Bowls.

Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft says, “Troy was the consummate Patriot who always put team goals ahead of personal ones.”

He retired in 2007 as the team’s career leader in receptions with 557.

“Troy Brown will always be special to me, as he was my sweetheart’s favorite player during his career,” said Kraft. “Clearly, a lot of Patriots fans shared her sentiment and I am proud that we will honor Troy with his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame this fall.”

The induction ceremony will be held outside The Hall at Patriot Place on Saturday, September 15, the day before the Patriots 2012 regular season home opener.

The three finalists were Brown, former free safety Fred Marion (1982-91) and former Head Coach Bill Parcells (1993-96).

Well the atmosphere remains all blocked up so improvements will be subtle and very gradual as we head through the week.  First off, very high tides from the full strawberry moon, persistent NE winds and battering waves are shoving water towards our coastline.  This is eroding our East facing beaches and making some shore roads impassable from high water and debris.  In fact, if you saw flooding in your community last night you will absolutely see it again tonight with similar conditions expected either side of the midnight high tide.  The tides will be getting smaller over the next few days diminishing the threat.

For the rest of us, the large stacked cyclone sitting off of Nantucket continues to throw moisture at us.  The heavy rain is over but occasional showers and the pockets of mist and drizzle remain, and we will see it all again tomorrow.  By the middle of the week the pattern starts moving again.  But just like a traffic jam, it will take time to get back up to full speed so while breaks of sun will start being seen, with a cooler pool of air aloft, any sun will lead to scattered PM showers.  This will be the case pretty all workweek.

Early thoughts on the weekend are very promising.  We will see an atmospheric transition from the cool trough to a warm ridge over the weekend and early next week.  Interior New England shouldn’t have any problem getting to or exceeding 80 degrees with lots of sunshine.  However, at the coast it will be a bit more difficult.  Clouds will be stubborn on Saturday near the water keeping temps in the 70-75 degree range.  We should find more success on Sunday in the sun and warmth department with highs of 75-80 to finish up the weekend.

The one-way service is being funded by the airport operator, the Massachusetts Port Authority. According to Massport, the three month test through Labor Day is intended to increase awareness of the service that began in 2004 and has been steadily gaining passengers.

A press conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Terminal E at Logan. Expected to attend are Massport Acting CEO David Mackay and Mass. Department of Transportation Richard Davey.

The test comes at a time when the MBTA is trying to get Massport to contribute dollars to its expected $161 million deficit. Discussions are also being held about having the airport pick-up the cost of South Shore ferry service to Boston from Quincy that also stops at Logan Airport.

Massport currently contributes about a million dollars a year to maintain Silver Line service and buses that can reach the airport from downtown through the Ted Williams Tunnel in about 15 minutes. Riders returning to Logan will pay the regular fare of $1.70, which will rise to $2.00 per ride on July 1.

The timing of this test raises questions, coming at the height of the summer travel season. The T is used by a majority of international visitors that make up about 10 percent of Logan’s passenger numbers that exceeded 25 million last year. Many of them buy the seven day unlimited pass program that will cost $18 after July 1.

If the purpose of the test is to attract more riders on the T from the airport, steps could have been taken to make the Blue Line subway traffic from Airport Station also free. All people would have had to do was to show their airline seat assignments or tickets.

For the past several years, transportation maps in the terminals have told riders going to downtown locations like the hotels in and around Copley Square to take the Blue Line and change to the Green Line at Government Center.

Calls for reaction from the Seaport hotels and the waterfront Convention & Exhibition Center were not returned.

Boston will host 6,000 business executives next month when the Global Business Travel Association starts on July 22 at The BCEC. Both former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush will be keynote speakers. An airport panel discussion will include David Barger, CEO of jetBlue Airways. One of Boston’s major advantages for events is the proximity of Logan Airport to downtown.

Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney confirmed that an officer was fatally shot at the Lawton Arms apartment complex shortly after 1 p.m.

The fallen officer was identified as Kevin Ambrose, a 36-year veteran of the Springfield police force.

Police say Ambrose was the first officer to arrive after a call from Charlene Mitchell explaining she had taken a restraining order out earlier in the day against 35-year-old Shawn Bryan and that he had shown up at her apartment to pick up some of his personal items.

According to The Republican, the couple have a 1-year-old child together. Bryan, a Correctional Officer in New York, was ordered by a court to stay away from Mitchell and their child.

After a brief conversation, officer Ambrose reportedly walked with Bryan and Mitchell back to the apartment.

There, according to police, Bryan shoved Mitchell into the apartment, slammed the door, and fired a shot through the door that struck Officer Ambrose.

Bryan opened the door and shot Ambrose a second time.

Bryan also shot Mitchell before taking off from the apartment and killing himself in a nearby car.

Mitchell is in critical condition and undergoing surgery at Baystate Medical Center.

Two Springfield officers were gunned down during a traffic stop nearly 27 years ago, the last time a city officer was killed in the line of duty.

Bryan was a Corrections Officer on Rikers Island in New York City.

NYC Department of Correction Commissioner Dora Schriro released the following statement: “We are shocked and saddened by today’s events. Each of us takes an oath of office to preserve and protect the lives of others. This is an unspeakable tragedy for which we have few words. We express heartfelt sadness for the family of Springfield Police Officer Kevin Ambrose, for his fellow officers in the Springfield Police Department and for the City of Springfield.”

BOSTON (CBS) – As a cold drizzle covered Boston on Monday, the friends of 28-year-old Boston College graduate student Kelsey Rennebohm gathered to remember her.

“Someone this morning described her as a light,” says Amy Piepiora, one of about 40 friends who walked from Cleveland Circle to BC to honor Kelsey.

Rennebohm was killed when she was hit by an MBTA bus on Friday night while riding her bike on Huntington Ave.

“She was just a fantastic friend and colleague and we are all better because of her,” says Piepiora.

The MBTA is still investigating the crash that killed Kelsey Rennebohm.

In recent years, Huntington Ave. has been the scene of numerous bike accidents, including a handful of deadly ones.

“In that particular roadway there have been 3 incidents in the last (5) years,” says Boston Mayor Tom Menino.

A big supporter of biking in Boston, Mayor Menino points out that Huntington doesn’t have bike paths.

“We want to take a very serious look at what we can do there,” says Menino.

But in a busy city like Boston with congested streets and a lot of traffic, how can drivers and cyclists co-exist? It’s the constant struggle, cyclists versus drivers.

“A lot of the cars are pretty angry with a lot of the bikers, probably due to the aggressive nature in which they drive,” says Nick Bruno, a college student who cycles often in the city.

But you don’t have to look far to get the opposite view from drivers.

“It’s actually really frustrating because a lot of times they’ll come into the lane and will swerve right in front of you,” says one Boston driver.

“In the city of Boston it’s likely that there are several hundred accidents a year,” says David Watson, the head of MassBike, the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition.

Fortunately, most of those crashes don’t result in serious injuries or hospitalizations.
Watson points out that the city has accomplished a lot over the past several years as far as encouraging safe cycling. But he says two things are needed to make Boston safer; continued road improvements and more awareness from both cyclists and drivers.

“We’re all people trying to get someplace and we all want to get there safely. That really how we should think about it,” says Watson.

BOSTON (CBS) – When Andi Sims’ beloved golden lab, Crimson, found a way through the electric fence, she was gone for days. “It is such a hopeless and helpless feeling,” she said.

After offering a reward and checking local shelters, Andi took her search to social media. “I posted it on Facebook. I posted it on Craigslist. I posted that we lost our dog on Twitter,” She said. Her strategy paid off. A friend saw Andi’s post and remembered she had seen another post about a dog that was found. Soon after, Andi and Crimson were reunited.

According to Petfinder.com, more than two million pets disappeared last year and less than ten percent ever make their way home. Stolen pets are also a growing problem. The American Kennel Club says they tracked 432 stolen pets last year, a 70% increase from 2010.

There are a number of new devices that will help pet owners track down their missing pets. The Tagg GPS attaches to your pet’s collar. If your dog or cat wanders from a certain area, you’ll get a text or email to your phone and you’ll see exactly where your pet is at that moment. There is also a collar that uses a QR code to store information about your dog or cat. Anyone will a smart phone can read the code and contact the owner.

The American Kennel Club still prefers using a micro-chip which is embedded under the animal’s skin with a syringe. Any vet can scan the dog with a special device to retrieve the information from the microchip.

Patrick said on Monday that he has received assurances from legislative leaders that action will be taken on the measure, which includes a transfer of $51 million to the MBTA from a motor vehicle inspection fund. But the governor also noted that time was running short.

T officials have warned that they warned of deeper service cuts on July 1 without legislative action on the bill.

The T’s board approved a budget in April raising fares an average 23 percent to help close a projected $160 million deficit, but voted to impose only modest service cuts in anticipation of receiving additional state funds.

Why has Thomas made this decision now? How much of this has to do with Thomas’ current contract?

The report released on Monday by the Massachusetts Revenue Department shows more than $170 million in tax credits were awarded or issued during calendar year 2011.

According to the report, the film industry was issued more than 90 tax credits totaling nearly $38 million.

The state awarded nearly $50 million in Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits in 2011, the largest total of any of the 13 categories.

A new law requires all agencies that issue tax credits to make the information public.

The Massachusetts Violent Death Reporting System says in 2009, 30 percent had a history of substance or alcohol abuse. And Yale University reports bully victims are up to nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Mary Blake has more in the conclusion of her series “Cries for Help.”

Narragansett Regional High School in Templeton is a school that holds painful memories for “Rebecca.”

“The drama in that school is ridiculous because it’s such a small school. Everybody’s in your business and they will go on and antagonize you for months at a time,” she says.

“Rebecca” maintains she has been a victim of bullying, and is concerned with events of the past year at ‘Gansett High.

“So many kids are, like, hurting themselves and they’re only 15 and 16 years old,” she says.

“Rebecca” wants educators to do more, but the full time school Resource Police Officer, Steven Flis, says students need to come forward.

“Everybody wants to say the word bullying,” Officer Flis said. “Everybody wants to use that term all the time. But you need to come, you need to talk to me and you need to report it if there is a problem that is going on. Not every incident is bullying, but everybody wants to use that as that’s what’s going on.”

Most observers agree that what is going on in alarming numbers is cyber bullying. “Rebecca” says she sees it a lot.

“Facebook is probably the worst,” she said.

State Attorney General Martha Coakley chairs a commission established by the state’s anti-bullying law. While she stops short of advocating that bullying be made a crime, Coakley has concerns about bullying on-line.

“This is 24-7 for some of these kids. It’s anonymous and it’s often very vicious,” Coakley states. “People will say things on line that they wouldn’t say to someone’s face. And the cumulative effect of that, parents and schools cannot ignore.”

She continued, “I understand that it’s difficult, but that’s not a reason why we don’t have to face it and deal with it in ways that teach kids respect and teach kids what the impact is , and in many ways, I think it’s starting to sink in.”

Worcester County Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis is working to put that message out too. Twice a week, he presents an anti-drug and alcohol prevention and education program called Face-2-Face for middle and high school students.

“I think it’s pretty clear that teen suicides often go hand in hand with drug and alcohol abuse,” said Evangelidis.

Sheriff Evangelidis has reached 18,000 students with his program. He spoke at Narragansett Regional High School a few weeks ago.

“Just the day after I went to Narragansett, my own daughter’s middle school softball team was playing Narragansett. After the game the kids spotted me and they all came up to me and talked to me about how they enjoyed the program and it made a difference for them,” he said.

Amy has three teenage children in the Templeton school system. She is calling for her peers to get more involved.

“Parents need to step up and find out if their kids are on drugs or not. Don’t just take their word for it, test them,” she challenged.

Incoming South Hadley School Superintendent Nick Young has a unique perspective on teen suicide. His new district was rocked by the suicide of freshman Phoebe Prince two years ago. Young lives in South Hadley and his daughter attended classes with Prince.

“I think public awareness is a really critical aspect of this problem,” Young said. “We all need to be sort of mindful of what the signs are for a student that is dealing with some sort of a challenge or a struggle that we can intervene on collectively, and find ways to assist.”

Larry Berkowitz, Director of the Riverside Trauma Center in Needham, puts it this way.

“Suicide is probably among the leading preventable causes of death as a public health issue,” he said. “And if we can get out there enough for people to really understand the causes, understand the warning signs and deal with the stigma, so that people aren’t afraid to ask for help, we can save a lot of lives.”

After tying the series at two games a piece, how do you feel about this Celtics team now?

“You cannot say enough about their resolve. I underestimated their talent at this level,” Mazz said. “Ray Allen’s turnaround has been significant. I thought he was pretty much done, and they might be able to get something out of him. But I dint expect him to be as efficient as he was.”

“The one thing they have on their side is experience and balls, which is proving to be more of a factor in this series than I thought it would be and I give the Celtics credit for that,” added Mazz. “They have a shot now. It’s down to three games, two of them are down there so you have to win one on that floor if you want to win the series. They have a chance, because Miami doesn’t have an answer for a couple of things that they are doing.”

What is more likely to happen? The Celtics winning in Miami or the Heat taking a game in Boston?

“I think either team could win on the other team’s floor,” said Mazz.

“I give the Celtics a hell of a chance. I like them ‘a lot more better,’” said Felger, making fun of Magic Johnson’s take following Game 4. “It’s entirely in the realm of possibility because, one, the Celtics are on this mission they have been on since the All-Star break. Since Garnett started playing down low, playing ten years younger, that is real.”

“The other part is there is still something so unimpressive to the Miami Heat, to me. For all the physical talents of LeBron James, of course, and Wade to a lesser extent, what else do they really have? They don’t have an offense. You’ve comes to realize that in the second halves of these games; they have no offense.”

“If Miami was supposed to be this multiple champion, how can you be that team with literally, no offense?”  wonders Felger. “Wade is going to dribble it out, or LeBron is going to dribble it out, and either a stupid long jumper or a drive to the rum. Now if you’re in Miami, you get to the free throw line, in Boston they don’t. That’s the Miami Heat offense. Once every while they’ll kick it open to someone for three, and maybe Battier will knock it done. That’s their offense!”

“They defend very well. When they dial up their defense they are legit,” Felger said of the Heat. When they play good D and start running off of misses, turnovers and even makes, they are pretty scary. But tell me what else they do well? They are not a good team. They have a couple incredible players, but they are not a good team. The Celtics are a good team, so here we go.”

Also, are Miami’s free throws killing them this series? What does it say that they are shooting 65-percent from the line this series?

As she continues her series “Cries for Help,” WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Mary Blake reports on the problem of bullying and teen suicide:

The community of Templeton, Massachusetts points to its high school sports teams with pride.

“We have a great sports system,” boasted Templeton Police Officer Steven Flis.

Flis serves as the full time School Resource Officer for the Narragansett Regional School District.

“It’s one of those things where they were going to do an article about how every one of our teams, except for one, made the playoffs this year,” said Flis.

Flis also coaches basketball.

“There are a lot of good things goin’ on in town, and we don’t want to overshadow all that stuff because we have great kids,” said Flis.

Overshadowing the positive news, however, are several recent deaths among the student population at Narragansett Regional High School, including a non-fatal suicide attempt earlier this month.

“We had a recent attempt. That’s no secret,” said Templeton Police Chief David Whitaker. “There is a current investigation into what happened in that incident.”

The tragedy brought dozens of parents together a week later at Narragansett Regional High School for a presentation on teen suicide prevention.

Michelle Moss, who has a 12-year-old son in Templeton’s school system, left that meeting dissatisfied. “I was shocked because I didn’t think it was just going to be on suicide. I thought it was going to be more on bullying, and what the school was gonna do,” said Moss.

Meeting leader Larry Berkowitz has concerns about oversimplifying the complex tragedy of suicide and bullying.

“We want to change bullying. It’s an awful thing and nobody should endure it. But, we also don’t want to mistakenly give the message that people who are bullied, then commit suicide,” said Berkowitz.

Moss says her son is being bullied at school.

“As soon as he gets off the bus, I know,” she said. “I just see that look and it tears me up inside because I know I can’t do anything.”

Last April, Moss set up a Facebook page called Parents Against Bullying Templeton Massachusetts. She says she was surprised to find 75 people joined within a couple days.

Rebecca, which is not her real name, counts herself among students bullied at Narragansett Regional High.

“If you don’t wear the right clothes, if you, like, bum it to school and don’t do your makeup, you get talked about,” she said. “And if you mess with someone and say you don’t like them, then it starts a giant problem that will last for months.”

Narragansett Regional School District Superintendent Rosalie Weiss says there are no bullying problems at Narragansett High.

“Parents will say to me that there is a lot of bullying going on in this school district and nothing is being done about it. And I will say that I have had no reports of bullying in the fashion it’s supposed to go through,” she said. “I think people will say almost anything is bullying and of course the definition of bullying isn’t simply name-calling. It’s basically a conscious act to cause harm to someone or someone’s property and it’s a planned and continuous action, not an isolated, I don’t like you, statement.”

But Dr. Weiss also said, in Rebecca’s case, “It’s probably not accurate, but if it’s accurate in that person’s eyes, then we have more work to do, but not just the school, we have community work to do, and that’s where it is.”

According to officials, the boat broke free from a mooring in Winthrop and wound up running aground off runway 27 at the airport.

The airport was forced to shut down that runway and another while the police and Coast Guard worked to get the disabled out of the way of any incoming or outgoing flights.

Eventually crews managed to lower the sailboat’s mast.

The boat remained on the rocks, but was no longer considered an obstruction.

The runway was reopened.

Menino kicked off the programs at City Hall Plaza on Monday morning.

After the announcement guests stuck around for free introductory boot camp and yoga classes led by instructors from Beantown Bootcamp and Health Yoga Life.

The fitness programs will be offered during the summer at City Hall plaza and are free and open to the public.

Menino launched the Boston Moves for Health campaign in April, with the goal of reducing obesity in the city. The mayor has challenged Boston residents to lose a collective 1 million pounds and to move 10 million miles over the next year.

Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer hopes Boston can be a trendsetter in health and fitness.

“We are in fact going to do what no other city has done, which is reduce the obesity rate by coming together to both be more physically active and eat better foods,” she said.

Is there a rift between Thomas and the organization?

“Of course there’s a rift this guy’s breaking their chops, if it’s about the contract then it’s not good, if it’s about him building a cabin or putting a tinfoil hat on his head it’s not good,” said Shaughnessy.

The guys question his handling of the situation when he decided to announce his decision through Facebook rather than coming out and making a full statement. Was it to avoid answering follow up questions?

Is Tim Thomas damaging his legacy as an icon in Boston sports history? Gresh thinks he is and he also thinks that there’s more to it then we’re being told.

“So at 38 I’m suppose to believe that this guys just wants to take a year off, the Olympics may or may not be a factor, but he could walk back into the National Hockey League sight unseen after a year of doing what in the mountains of Colorado saying that he’s training. Come on, it just doesn’t add up.”

Weddings are a big business ($100 billion industry). The average cost of a wedding today in the U.S. is almost $28,000. Average means there are weddings that cost a lot less and weddings that cost a lot more.

And that price tag does not include the honeymoon! This can easily add another $10,000 to the bottom line. Couples will spend an estimated $7 billion on honeymoons this year. Many of these couples, or their parents, are going into debt to create the perfect wedding.

Add that debt to school loans and many newly married couples have a negative net worth that will take them years to work into the positive column.

There has to be a better way to start your new life together. Couples can do a variety of things to save money. I’ve listed the most expensive items for a wedding and how you can save:

1. Receptions:  The reception will be the biggest expense. What can you do to keep food, alcohol and venue costs down? A wedding at home? In your parent’s garden? The beach at sunset? Skip dinner in favor of finger foods. Serve only wine and beer or just a wine punch.

2. Wedding Gowns:  Do something simple. Look for a cocktail dress. There’s David’s Bridal where you can get a very nice dress for under $300.  Another site: Wedding Dresses for sale online. I found dresses there for under $400.

Buy a used wedding gown; at a yard sale or better still try Craig’s List. I found several never-been-used dresses for under $350 and one for $40. My greatest find was eBay. Brand new dress for $17.50 with free shipping.

3. Pictures:  They could cost thousands of dollars. Is there an amateur photographer among your friends or family? Someone that you would entrust with the day? How about digital pictures? Then go to Snapfish and create your own wedding album.

4. Wedding Cakes:  Average cost of a Wedding cakes is over $500. They are priced by the slice, some as high $10 a slice. Go for a small cake, a 9-inch size that you can do the traditional cutting of the cake together and then serve fancy cupcakes.  You can get a great cupcake for under a buck or have your Aunt Mary make the cupcakes.

5. Honeymoon:  Choose some place inexpensive; The Berkshires, the Cape, the rest of New England or Canada. Save the Hawaiian trip for your 10^th anniversary.

6. Engagement Rings:  Do you need one? Average cost close to $5,000. That’s a lot of money for something that sparkles and needs to be taken off when you make meat loaf! Makes a great future anniversary gift! And if you get one, make sure it’s insured properly.

One more thing:  I found you could buy wedding insurance. Wedding cancellation or liability insurance for $200 to $1000 per event. They insure everything else why not weddings?

Remember those warm, dry and sunny March days we had? And remember wondering if we were going to pay for it at some point? Well, it is payback time, and there’s nothing like a good ol’ June Nor’easter to dampen the spirits!

There is a major traffic jam going on and unfortunately it is not on the roads filled with people trying to get to the beach, it is in our atmosphere. A blocking pattern has set up, something we normally see in winter or early spring. So now, a large block is now in place over Greenland and the North Atlantic and it is shunting cold and stormy weather right into our backyard.

What we are experiencing Monday and really for the next few days is truly a June Nor’easter.

We have persistent onshore winds out of the northeast, causing minor to moderate coastal flooding, periods of rain, some heavy, and major flooding up in parts of Maine, where they have received upwards of 7” of rain in the last few days.

This blocking pattern will ensure that our cool and damp weather will not be going anywhere fast. In fact, we are not likely to see even a glimpse of sunshine until Wednesday and even then, temperatures will stay below normal and showers will remain scattered in the region.

By late week and this weekend, we will gradually see more and more sunshine again and get temperatures back where they should be, although a shower threat will still exist each day.

COASTAL FLOODING

Of immediate concern is the coastal flood threat. Tides are astronomically very high, the highest of the entire month right now, thanks to a full “strawberry” moon. Couple that with a strong, gusty and persistent onshore wind and you have the perfect recipe for coastal flooding.

Many of the flood prone areas have already had issues Sunday night and again Monday. If you had flooding problems Sunday night, get ready, because it is going to happen again Monday night.

Tides will peak Monday night just before midnight and therefore, the National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for the entire East Coast of Massachusetts (and all coastal areas of New England for that matter). Coastal residents need to prepare for significant flooding from 10 p.m. Monday night to 2 a.m. Tuesday.

We are expecting inundation of low lying areas and roads along the coastline and a good deal of beach erosion as well. Beach erosion is expected to be especially problematic along the east facing ocean side of Cape Cod, where seas have risen to nearly 10 feet.

Tides will remain high, only slowly receding for the next few days, so additional watches and warnings may be issued on Tuesday and Wednesday.

So hang in there, summer is just around the corner. We hope…

AAA Southern New England reports Monday that self-serve, regular has dropped a nickel in the past week to an average of $3.56 per gallon.

It’s the seventh consecutive week of lower prices, which are now 33 cents below where they were at their peak on April 16.

The current price is two cents less than the national average and 30 cents below the cost at the same time a year ago.

AAA found self-serve, regular selling for as low as $3.39 and as high as $3.79.

After 39 long years, the Boston Bruins had captured the Stanley Cup. Tim Thomas won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and we all thought nothing could take that great feeling of pride and glory away from what that Bruins TEAM had accomplished.

Fast forward to Jan. 23, 2012, the annual invite of the Cup-winning team to the White House, and EVERY Bruins player made the trip to Washington except the MVP goaltender. The snub left us all wondering why a supposed TEAM player would not accompany his mates to what was to be a mostly obligatory, but honored tradition.

Thomas posted on his Facebook page back then (who knew he had one before this?), “I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People….”

Well, after several more posts, questions from the media, his “Peace out,” see ya later attitude, and a first-round exit from the playoffs, there is no question it is “all about Tim” and to hell with the TEAM.  Thomas has decided to put a noose around his team’s neck (again via Facebook) with his decision to sit out next season.

The 38-year-old says it’s time “to reconnect with the three F’s. Friends, Family, and Faith.”

On the surface, that statement says it all and is to be commended. After all, as my good friend Gil Santos always says, sports is the toy department of life. But since sports is also big business now, does he think he doesn’t owe something to the people who pay his salary? Or to the fans that supported him, and still support him no matter what the reason, as long as there is a reasonable explanation?

“Sitting out” the season is not retiring. Does he plan on playing in the 2013-2014 season? Should the Bruins put all their forward thinking into waiting for him to make a definitive decision?  The bottom line is no matter what we as fans think, what we have known since January, and really not before, is that Tim Thomas is an individual and doesn’t play by anyone else’s rules but his own.

And that’s fine. I really don’t care what athletes do in their private lives. I’ve never been starstruck like that. I marvel at their talents and what they provide for the teams I root for.

For two months at the end of the 2010-11 regular season, Tim Thomas took us on a spectacular roller-coaster ride through the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It was all about the TEAM that had so many key moments by key players — Michael Ryder’s save in Game 5 and OT goal of the Habs series. Zdeno Chara’s skate block in the same series, all of Nathan Horton’s game-winning goals, the pairing of Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, the list goes on. But it was the sliding pad save in overtime against Brian Gionta, the reach back stick save on Steve Downie “that would not go,” and the shutout to seal the Cup that I will never forget. All of those were provided by Tim Thomas.

I wish this had all come to a better end, instead of some fans thinking Tim Thomas is a lunatic while others applaud what he is doing. I do hope someday that Thomas will return to the TD Garden when the Bruins will make it HIS night — in which all of his famous accomplishments will be acknowledged. Tim Thomas will forever live in the hearts of many fans for what he accomplished and how he accomplished it during his pro career. I  can’t speak for his life personally — as no one but he and his family know about that — and that is fine with me.

Just know that for me, as a lifetime Bruins fan, I will never forget Wednesday night, June 15, 2011.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Mary Blake is examining this rarely discussed tragedy, and its impact on one Massachusetts community.

Here’s part two of her series “Cries for Help.”

Narragansett Regional High School, which serves Templeton and Phillipston, has roughly 460 students. Its relatively small student body is coping with a recent non-fatal suicide attempt by a student. This is on the heels of several other student deaths this year.

David Whitaker has been Templeton’s Police Chief since August of 2003.

“It really affects so many people and I don’t think the person who makes the attempt has any idea of the impact they have on their school community,” said Whitaker.

In fact, dozens of parents showed up at a seminar on teen suicide prevention that was held at Narragansett Regional High in early May.

“I just think, just to get it out there, and have people and resources and knowing how to talk to your kid,” is the explanation Kathleen Grossman gave for attending the seminar that night.

Grossman has two children who are currently enrolled in middle school.

Laurel Miller, who has a 16-year-old daughter at Narragansett Regional High School, was there as well.

“Mental illness is not talked about enough, and is not dealt with enough, and that’s a big underlying piece to this,” said Miller.

Larry Berkowitz is Director of the Riverside Trauma Center in Needham and presided over the community meeting in Templeton. He agrees.

“The National Institute of Mental Health reports that about 90 percent of the time, when there is a suicide, there is some underlying mental health issue and it’s often undiagnosed,” said Berkowitz. “The important thing to me about that is that many mental health challenges respond well to treatment. So if we see it and can treat it, we can prevent a lot of problems, particularly suicide.”

Warning signs can include a persistent sadness, changes in sleep patterns, a change in schools grades and friends.

Narragansett School Superintendent Rosalie Weiss says educators do what they can.

“As economic situations go south, this institution is the only major institution that is available,” she said. “But look who runs this institution: educators. We are not mental health professionals, so we deal with the academic portion but we need the support of others to deal with the mental health picture.”

Nick Young is taking over the South Hadley school system this fall. He also recognizes the importance of making available mental health services for teens.

“There is a growing percentage of students that are dealing with depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders, and that’s a much more likely cause of teen suicide than bullying,” said Young.

South Hadley received international attention following the suicide of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince in January of 2010. Investigators say Prince had been bullied by fellow classmates for several months.

In Part 1 of her series “Cries for Help,” WBZ NewsRadio 1030′s Mary Blake looks at the impact teen suicide has had on one Massachusetts community:

Templeton, Massachusetts is a quaint rural community of 8,000 residents, situated roughly 60 miles from Boston. It’s currently celebrating its 250th anniversary.

A gazebo sits on the Templeton Town Common and there is a General Store a stone’s throw away. Charles Carroll is the store owner.

“This was my first job, said Carroll. “I started working here when I was 15 years old and eventually I ended up buying it from the two previous owners. It’s been a great place to work and grow up and so I’ve had a lot of fun.”

On the flip side, there have been several tragic events that have left the town reeling. Several deaths have occurred among the student body at Narragansett Regional High School. Just a few weeks ago, it was a non-fatal suicide attempt.

In the wake of that incident, dozens of parents gathered at the school for a presentation run by Riverside Trauma Center based in Needham. Director Larry Berkowitz led the meeting.

“We want people to know that there is no risk or harm in talking about this,” said Berkowitz. “There is sort of a myth out there that people worry if we talk about suicide, we’re going to plant an idea, plant a seed. There is actually research that shows there is really no danger in talking about it. There’s actually good research that shows when we introduce suicide prevention programs in schools, it doesn’t increase risk, it reduces risk.”

Berkowitz argues that suicide prevention should be dealt with at the same level as substance abuse prevention and safe driving issues. Parents attending the May 9th meeting found that difficult to do.

As he emerged from the meeting, former Templeton Fire Chief Richard Kirby shook his head.

“The last suicide attempt was my neighbor’s daughter. It’s scary, it’s scary, ” said Kirby.

Foreclosure counselor Laurel Miller echoed Kirby. Her daughter is 16 and attends ‘Gansett High.

“She has seen close to five people and one person who is not doing so well right now… ..seen them, ya know, seen this happen,” said Miller. “It’s scary. It’s scary. I think there needs to be some more dialogue on how we as parents and we as the school work together to handle this and make it easier for our kids to cope with these things.”

Dr. Rosalie Weiss is outgoing Superintendent of Schools for the Narragansett Regional School District. She says there is a crisis intervention team in place.

“We’ve chosen to try to address mental health issues, bullying issues and drug issues and these are our three focus points right now,” said Weiss.

Shaughnessy did not give the Celtics much of a chance before the series, but has been impressed by what the C’s have shown, especially the last three games.

“I was wrong about the Celtics chances in this thing. I said five games, tops. We’re already looking at six, and they might win in six. It’s very impressive,” he said. ”Right now they are taking it to the Heat.

“They are going to get crushed by myself and everybody else if they lose this series. They would richly deserve it, because there is no excuse to lose this series,” Shaugnessy said of the Heat. “On the other hand with the Celtics, it’s only good things. This is a team that Boston fans are really going to love like they loved every Patriot team, especially the 2001-02 Patriots, teams that just take on that character. I know they make a lot of money, but they’re the ‘little engine that could’ now. People love this team; overachieving, not much of bench, no rebounding and million year old guys, and here they are dominating the Heat for three games in a row.”

They also discuss Ray Allen rounding back into form, but does he have enough to keep playing as well as he has recently? And can the Celtics bring this play with them back to Miami?

The all-caps spelling, of course, is in reference to Thomas’ Facebook statement after he elected not to attend the team’s Stanley Cup celebration at the White House. After that decision, Thomas was criticized in the media for being a selfish, me-first player who used a team celebration as an opportunity to steal the spotlight in order to make a political statement.

With the benefit of retrospect, we know now that the White House fallout was the beginning of a very abrupt end to Thomas’ career as a Boston Bruin.

The netminder went back to his trusty Facebook page to make a semi-official announcement over the weekend that come October, he will not be playing hockey for the Bruins next season.

“At the age of 38, I believe it is time to put my time and energies into those areas and relationships that I have neglected,” Thomas wrote. “That is why at this time I feel the most important thing I can do in my life is to reconnect with the three F’s. Friends, Family, and Faith. This is what I plan on doing over the course of the next year.”

In its essence, Thomas’ statement is perfectly fine — admirable, even. To take issue with a man for turning down millions of dollars and instead choosing to be closer to his family would be downright coldhearted. You can’t fault a man looking to reconnect with his three F’s.

That is, though, only if you take his announcement at face value, which admittedly is rather hard to do given the following set of circumstances:

–Tim Thomas’ no-trade clause expires on July 1, giving the Bruins the freedom to trade him to any team they desire without requiring his approval.

–Tim Thomas received little support from the Bruins organization after the White House trip, with Cam Neely saying the team was “disappointed” with the decision and one anonymous team source calling Thomas an “[expletive] selfish [expletive]” in The Boston Globe.

–The relationship between the Boston sports media and Thomas grew rather sour after that White House incident, with Thomas twice cutting short his sessions with the media when he didn’t like where the conversation was going.

–When making his announcement to reconnect with his three F’s, Thomas included two links to his sponsors. Can a heartfelt, sincere message really be brought to you by G-Form.com?

There are also a number of areas left for speculation. There was the whole “we-they” debate after Thomas was accused of separating himself from his teammates after this year’s Game 7 loss to Washington. There were the rumblings that Thomas, unhappy with his name popping up in trade rumors after Tuukka Rask had taken his job as the Bruins’ No. 1 goalie in 2010, took the gold colors and Bruins images out of his goalie equipment and went with a straightforward black-and-white look.

However much stock you want to put into any of that is up to you. The fact that Thomas left so much room for interpretation and speculation with his decisions and statements over the past year is nobody’s fault but his own. If you choose to look at either with a heavy dose of cynicism, that is your right as an INDIVIDUAL.

Just don’t expect it to matter much to Thomas.

If there’s been one distinctive quality about Thomas throughout his entire career, it’s that he’s never been afraid to be different. That’s exactly why he became an NHL starter, an Olympic team member, a two-time Vezina winner and just the 15th goaltender to ever win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He was drafted 217th overall back in 1994, but he didn’t let his position as the 20th goalie selected that year kill his dreams of playing professional hockey.

A rational person would have quit in the late ’90s in the ECHL, AHL or IHL. He wasn’t spectacular by any means in any of those leagues, and it would take a crazy person’s mind-set to keep the dream alive.

A rational person would have relished in the success that Thomas achieved in Finland and settled in for a nice career overseas. A risk evaluator would have advised against moving back to the States for that small chance of ever making it back to the NHL in a full-time capacity, especially after with a surefire career waiting in Finland, and especially at the age of 31.

But Thomas didn’t care. He took the road less traveled, and lo and behold, it worked out masterfully for him.

So why would any of us expect him to do anything different right now?

Of course, his decision this time around comes with repercussions. For one, he’s reneging after signing a contract. He’s bailing after signing his name on a dotted line and agreeing to work for a specific period of time. That’s not good. If the Bruins don’t have the ability to decide “We don’t want Player X on the team next year, even though we agreed to pay him,” then a player making that same decision brings about a dangerous dynamic in professional sports.

Worse than that, though, is the $5 million cap hit the Bruins will take this year for a player who’s hanging out in November with his family in Colorado and is training with Evo Ultra Fit and G-Form rather than stopping pucks against the Canadiens and Penguins. It won’t make general manager Peter Chiarelli’s job impossible, but it will make it that much harder to build a complete roster given that $5 million handicap. Taking that to the next step, Thomas’ decision, while a personal one, will have lasting effects on his now-former teammates, as the team will be at a disadvantage once the season starts. There’s just no way to say Thomas’ decision doesn’t hurt the Boston Bruins.

And if Thomas made his decision out of spite of possibly being traded, or out of his own personal belief that he’ll be able to make the Olympic squad in 2014, or anything that would constitute putting himself before the team, then shame on him. But aside from speculation and educated guesses, we’ll never know that for sure. And to eviscerate a man based on circumstance and speculation is a risky proposition.

Still, all of those issues are valid, and even the ones that aren’t fully known to the public are worth questioning. They’ve led to overreactions everywhere, from fans’ comments on Thomas’ own Facebook post to scathing columns in the media ripping Thomas for being selfish.

And maybe, really, such commentary is exactly right. But that’s not the point. Tim Thomas has always done what he wants, even if it makes no sense, even if 99 percent of humans would choose to do the opposite, and even if “doing what he wants” means trying to make Team USA as a 40-year-old, something nobody outside the Thomas household believes to be more than remotely possible.

The latest decision is most unfortunate for the Bruins, the team that gave Thomas his NHL career and a substantial four-year contract worth $20 million. If you want to be upset, that’s certainly fair. If you want to be skeptical about his explanation, you have good reason.

But if Thomas is indeed being sincere, and if he feels strongly that spending time with his family is more important than manning the crease for the Boston Bruins, then what value would he have if he stayed on the team? Thomas explained himself by saying that playing at the sport’s highest level requires a “singleminded focus” that requires much sacrifice in life. Without that focus, it’s hard to believe Thomas would be able to perform at an NHL level if his heart wasn’t in it.

So while this saga has resulted in emotions flying wild from all directions, it’s best to just stick to the facts and what we know. It’s easiest to just chalk this up to Tim Thomas shouting loudly from the rooftops once again that he is an INDIVIDUAL. If you expected anything different of him, then you just haven’t been paying attention.

Chris Bosh hasn’t played in a game since suffering an abdominal strain on May 13 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Indiana Pacers. The Heat have said that if the forward doesn’t have any setbacks in workouts he will be activated for Game Five.

Greg Likens of WQAM in Miami joined Toucher & Rich to discuss the series so far, the possible return of Bosh next game and his thoughts on who will take the series.

Bosh hasn’t played a game in 22 days and it looks like the Heat will activate him for Tuesday night’s Game Five in Miami. Is it a positive thing for the Heat to play a somewhat crippled Chris Bosh at this point in the series? Should the just put the game in the hands of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade?

“To try to put him out there while you don’t know what to expect — and I don’t think we should be expecting a lot, especially in his first game back — will at least cause Garnett to respect his ability to shoot the ball, and that will be beneficial for LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.”

Does Bosh need to play to solidify his place with this team? Likens believes so, to an certain degree.

“I think to a certain extent just to prove to his teammates and to everybody else, ‘hey I’m going to fight through this and show up for you guys,’” said Likens. ”I do think it’s a smart move on his part if he can play tomorrow night.”

Plus, does Dwyane Wade need to take accountability for the way he plays when he doesn’t show up? And does Likens still think the Heat will win the series?

Currently, hikers and rock climbers frequent the Quincy quarries.

Easton resident Al Endriunas has launched Quincy Quarry Canopy Tours with hopes of bringing zip line tours to the area.

“You have two guides with eight guests that will take a two-and-a-half to three hour tour attached via the cable,” Endriunas told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Karen Twomey.

A neighborhood meeting to discuss the project is scheduled for Thursday.

The Celtics had an 18-point lead in the first half, but needed overtime to beat the Heat 93-91.

‘That was as entertaining a game to watch that, we haven’t only seen in this series, but seen all year,” Gresh said of the overtime thriller.

“You’re now down to best of three, and this literally is the coin flip,” Gresh said of Tuesday’s Game 5 in Miami. “I didn’t think we’d be sitting here at 2-2, under any circumstances… The Celtics are carrying major momentum into Game 5.”

“This is a must-win for the Miami Heat; from their perspective and their mind when you talk about the psychological advantage,” said Zolak. “Let’s face it, youth, athleticism, everything favored Miami. But it’s back to the intangibles; the beliefs, and lack of hesitation. At the end of the games, when something is on the line, the Celtics don’t whizz down their legs and there is something to be said for that.”

Gresh and Zo also discussed Rajon Rondo’s halftime thoughts on the Heat, who he said were crying to the refs every trip down the floor.

“That’s directed specifically at Dwyane Wade. LeBron, Paul, KG, they do it when they get into the game. But the guy that is doing it right away is Dwyane Wade, and it’s hurting his game,” said Gresh. “If he would shut up and shoot and go to the rack, or shut up and work off LeBron’s drive… LeBron has been able to get to the hole pretty easily this series. One on one he has been  nearly unstoppable getting to the rim. Dwayne Wade, you can’t say the same thing.”

Each week we’ll be providing you with insight into the best (and worst) baseball players to play in your fantasy baseball league.

This week should see a bunch of DL spots open up across the league. Mike Morse is back, and Desmond Jennings and Carlos Santana are among players making their return on Tuesday. As such, the waiver wire could be flush with talent – here are a few names to keep in mind as you make your adds and drops for the coming week.

5 UP

1. A.J. Burnett, SP, PIT: Burnett gave up 12 runs in one start this year. He has a 3.60 ERA. That should give you an indication of how well he’s pitched every other time out. If not, consider the following: he hasn’t given up more than two runs in any other start this year. Pittsburgh is a nice place to pitch even if it might not bring tons of wins, and he’s always had excellent strikeout stuff. People still aren’t catching on, but his ERA is dropping fast enough that now is the time to act.

2. Wilin Rosario, C, COL: Ramon Hernandez is on the disabled list now, meaning it’s Rosario’s chance to take a firm hold of Colorado’s catching job. Rosario has already displayed massive power, hitting eight homers and seven doubles in 106 plate appearances. The problem? He only has seven singles, leading to just a .235 average. He strikes out a ton (28.3% of plate appearances), so that won’t come up too far, but he could find a way to hit about .260 with 15-20 home runs the rest of the way, and that’s huge value at catcher.

3. Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, CLE: Chisenhall has made the most of his callup, going 6-for-18 with two home runs in his first week back. With Jack Hannahan and Travis Hafner both on the disabled list, Chisenhall should get his fair share of opportunities. He started four of the last six games for the Indians, thrice at third base and once at DH. He killed the ball in the minor leagues, slugging .541 behind four homers and 12 doubles, so he should provide a decent bat at third base. He might be a bit of a reach in 12-team mixed leagues, but keeper and deep league players need to take a look.

4. Rajai Davis, OF, TOR: Everybody needs steals. Davis might be the man for the job in your league, as he’s rarely owned anywhere and looks to be in line for more playing time with Eric Thames shipped out to Triple-A Las Vegas. Davis already has 10 steals and should be able to swipe 20 to 30 more with reliable playing time. He won’t kill you in batting average – he has a career .272 mark and is at .250 this season – and he should score some runs in the solid Blue Jays lineup, so unlike many stolen base fiends (think Juan Pierre) he’s not a total loss in the other categories.

5. Carlos Quentin, OF, SD: Quentin came back from the disabled list last week and looked great, hitting .474/.545/1.105 in five games. He should have a chance to get to 20 home runs despite the truncated season – he’s hit at least 20 each of the past four years. He should be owned in most leagues – certainly more than the 55% of Yahoo leagues he’s currently owned in.

1. Adam LaRoche, 1B, WAS: LaRoche went 2-for-18 last week to bring his overall line down to .282/.378/.518. At 32, that would still be his best mark in all three triple-slash marks since 2006. You can read that two ways – either he’s still been really good despite the slump, or there’s more slumps coming. I choose to read the latter, and so does the ZiPS projection system – it only expects him to hit .246/.329/.438 the rest of the way, a mediocre performance from a first baseman.

2. Omar Infante, 2B, MIA: Infante is more than capable of hitting for average – his .314 mark isn’t much higher than his three-year average of .301. It’s the power that definitely won’t continue – Infante has six home runs on the year, which is usually a whole season for him. He hasn’t hit double digit home runs since 2004 with Detroit, and although he might get there this year, he’ll probably need all season to do it. He homered just once in May, and don’t be surprised if that’s his new norm for the year.

3. Kyle Lohse, SP, STL: Lohse opened the season with four starts of one run or less. Since then? Just one quality start and 22 runs allowed in 39.2 innings (a 4.99 ERA). He never struck batters out, so without the crazy run prevention he had to start the year he’s now a two-category pitcher at best. He still has a shiny 3.36 ERA, so now’s the time to get out while the value is still there.

4. Mark Buehrle, SP, MIA: Buehrle seems to have a decent amount of ownership based on reputation, and while it’s true that Buehrle has been a very good pitcher over his career, it hasn’t really translated to fantasy. He has a career 5.05 K/9 and 1.28 WHIP, so at best he’s only really contributing in two of the four main starting pitcher categories, and it’s difficult to rely on wins for production out of a pitcher. He’s an asset for the Marlins, but his pitch-to-contact ways just don’t work in standard five-category fantasy baseball.

5. Justin Masterson, SP, CLE: Lefties continue to be a huge issue for Masterson, as they’re hitting .326/.425/.455 against him on the season. Teams have caught on and are taking advantage – Masterson has actually faced more lefties (163) than righties (140) this season. With his low arm angle, Masterson is easier to see out of the hand against lefties, and as such we shouldn’t be surprised if this trend continues. He just can’t get them to swing and miss at anything – lefties have 14 walks against just 13 strikeouts versus Masterson this season, the key culprit behind his 5.14 ERA.

Out for the last week with a torn abductor muscle in his right thumb, Pedroia was able to avoid a trip to the disabled list and is primed for a return. He resumed batting practice on Saturday, with the help of a special brace over his hand, and felt no discomfort or swelling on Sunday.

Now the Red Sox second baseman hopes to return Tuesday when they open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles in Boston.

When asked if the team had said he was good to go, Pedroia gave his usual Pedroia-like response.

“They don’t tell me anything, man. I play Tuesday,” he told the Boston Herald.

Pedroia was nearly called upon over the weekend in Toronto, after short stop Mike Aviles was hit in the hand by a grounder during Boston’s 7-4 win on Saturday. Manager Bobby Valentine said he was ready to put Pedroia in the game, as the team had no other infielders available on the bench.

But Aviles was able to remain in the game, and Pedroia — glove in hand — stayed on the bench.

“The good thing is he feels good,” Valentine said of Pedroia following Saturday’s game. “When Mike got hit with that ball, he was ready to go out in the field. I wasn’t really hesitant. So we’ll see.”

Pedroia is hitting .295 with five home runs and 21 RBI this season. He is second on the team in both hits (59) and runs scored (30).

Durant scored 18 of his 36 points in a scintillating final 7 minutes, Serge Ibaka added a career-high 26 points and the Oklahoma City Thunder evened the Western Conference finals at two games apiece by beating San Antonio 109-103 Saturday night.

After seeing his team’s 15-point lead dwindle to four, Durant took over midway through the fourth quarter by scoring all 16 of the Thunder’s points during a span of just over 5 minutes to keep the Spurs at bay.

“We tried to do a couple of different things but his play was better than anything we did defensively, that’s for sure,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “He finished it off in fine fashion.”

With All-Star teammate Russell Westbrook limited to seven points, Durant did almost all of the damage late to send the series back to San Antonio all square for Game 5 on Monday night.

Durant, who finished behind only LeBron James in MVP voting, hit three straight jumpers, the last one coming after he bumped into Tony Parker in the lane to draw a foul and set up a three-point play. Then he attacked the rim for his next three baskets, getting to the line again when he was fouled on a layup off of James Harden’s alley-oop.

“He just got going. Once a player of that much talent starts scoring, it’s hard to stop them,” said Stephen Jackson, who was repeatedly bumped off by screens while trying to stick with Durant during his hot stretch.

“He got into a nice rhythm. I was able to stop him one time, but they got the lob and the and-one. He was just rolling. It was kind of too late to stop him.”

Durant hit another jumper after coming off a Westbrook screen for the last basket in his personal run — and the Spurs were still within striking distance. Rookie Kawhi Leonard bracketed a pair of 3-pointers around that Durant jumper, and the Spurs were only down 102-96 with 1:24 left.

The Spurs succeeded in getting the ball out of Durant’s hands on the next possession, only for him to provide the assist on Harden’s 3-pointer from the left wing that bumped the lead to nine.

Durant hit two free throws in the final minute to help close it out.

“I didn’t tell myself that I need to go score because what we were doing was working,” Durant said.

“We were passing the ball and guys were making shots. … I just wanted to stick with what we were doing, but it started to open up for me and I could see some lanes that gave me some opportunities to make some shots.”

Oklahoma City is trying to become the 15th team in NBA history to overcome an 0-2 deficit in a seven-game series, and the eighth to do it since 2004. The Thunder avoided an even trickier task by winning.

Only eight teams have ever overcome a 3-1 hole, and only two had done it while needing two wins on the road — the 1995 Rockets and 1968 Celtics.

Game 5 is Monday night in San Antonio.

“They did what they had to do. They protected their home court here,” said Tim Duncan, who led San Antonio with 21 points. “We’re going to try to go home and do exactly the same.”

Leonard added 17 points and nine rebounds for San Antonio, which had won 20 in a row before losing Game 3.

The Spurs wiped away most of a 15-point deficit with a run that coincided with Popovich turning to DeJuan Blair, who’s had some notoriously big games against the Thunder but had occupied a spot on the bench for most of the playoffs after starting 62 of the 66 regular-season games.

Blair sprung free for a layup early in an 18-5 comeback, and Manu Ginobili’s 3-pointer from the top of the key trimmed Oklahoma City’s lead to 73-71 with 1:16 to go in the third quarter.

The Spurs were within four after Duncan’s left-handed runner with 6:55 left in the game. That’s when Thunder coach Scott Brooks called a timeout, and Durant came out of it firing away. He made seven of his last eight shots and also finished with eight assists and six rebounds.

“It was hard because were on a run, we were feeling good about ourselves and we just couldn’t make a stop,” Ginobili said.

Ibaka made all 11 of his shots — and all four of his free throws — to lead a strong performance from Oklahoma City’s frontcourt while Durant’s usual running mates, Westbrook and Harden, both struggled.

Ibaka, starting center Kendrick Perkins and reserve Nick Collison combined to go 22 for 25 from the field for 49 points. Westbrook missed eight of his 10 shots and Harden was limited to eight points.

The Thunder shot 56 percent and outrebounded San Antonio 41-31.

Oklahoma City pulled ahead to stay with a 12-3 run early in the second quarter with Durant and Westbrook both taking a break. Westbrook nailed a 3-pointer from the left side soon after returning to provide the Thunder’s first double-digit lead at 43-33 with 4:44 to go before halftime.

Adolfo was outside the Garden after the win on Sunday night to talk to some very excited Celtics fans.

One fan didn’t blame Dwyane Wade for throwing up the three at the last second to try and win the game, but was pumped that he missed it. He wants the Celtics to focus and bring home banner 18 despite the officials trying to “fix” the outcome of the series.

Plus a quick little song about LeBron James getting ejected from the game on Sunday night.

But Dwyane Wade’s three-pointer with time expiring was no good, and the Celtics head to Miami with the series all tied at two games apiece.

For the Celtics, there may have been a little Garden magic at work.

“Red (Auerbach) wasn’t going to let that go in, you know that,” head coach Doc Rivers joked after the Celtics’ 93-91 win. “Not in the Boston Garden.”

“Words can’t even describe what kind of game it [was],” said Paul Pierce, who led the Celtics with 23 points despite fouling out in overtime. “It’s a funny game, you know, the way the ball bounces, the way things go. … I’m just glad I was on the winning side today.”

Pierce had to watch the final attempt from the bench, as did Miami’s LeBron James, who also fouled out in OT. So that left Wade to take the potential game-winner, one Rivers thought was good as it left Wade’s hands.

“I thought it looked good when it left his hands,” Rivers said of Wade’s last-second attempt. “We told (Marquis Daniels to) watch the pump fake. But I thought what Marquis did was, on the pump fake, he jumped out-of-the-way, so he couldn’t draw a foul. Wade is the best, him and Paul, at doing that. So he got the first part — well, Wade did — but I thought avoiding of the foul was as big as anything else.”

“It was on-line,” Wade said of the shot. “It was all you can ask for. I got my legs on the middle and shot it, and it was on-line, it just decided it didn’t want to go in.”

Wade finished the evening with 20 points on 7-for-22 shooting.

With Pierce, Boston’s leading scorer, out for overtime, Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo took it upon himself to rally the troops.

“I told Kevin (Garnett), ‘It’s time,’” Rondo said following the win. “We have to take the game over. I didn’t look at Ray and tell him, but he knew what time it was. At that particular time in the game, when your leading scorer goes out, you have to step up and make plays. And that’s what we did as a team.”

Doc, Rondo Post Game 4: 

Rondo had been controlling the game for Boston anyways, playing quarterback with some magnificent passes and consistently hitting his teardrop floater. He scored three of Boston’s four points in overtime and finished with 15 points, 15 assists and five rebounds.

It’s Rondo’s now-consistency that makes him great, says his head coach.

“He’s good. That’s what he is now when you think about it. He’s just a good basketball player; a great basketball player,” Rivers said of Rondo. “Now he’s consistent, and that’s when you cross the line; when you’re no longer inconsistent. He’s been just terrific for us.”

Report: Bosh Expected Back For Game 5

The series now shifts back to Miami for Game 5 on Tuesday night. The Celtics are feeling good about themselves following the win, but they know they still have a lot of fight left.

A certain kind of fight, that is.

“We have a chance of winning this series. It’s not going to be easy,” said Pierce. “A good old, classic bar fight.”

If Boston had stayed, there may have been some big-time retribution for what they did to Kevin Youkilis.

Major League Baseball should step in to reprimand or fine the Toronto Blue Jays. It’s ridiculous.

Daniel Bard is a mess right now. The kid with the golden arm can’t throw a strike. In just 1 2/3 innings Sunday, Bard gave up just one hit. However, he allowed five runs because he walked six — that’s right — six! Bard also hit two Blue Jay batters. So, in getting just 5 outs, Bard issued eight free passes along the way. Bard threw 55 pitches — 31 balls and only 24 strikes. A brutal ratio.

The Blue Jays beat Bard and the Sox 5-1. Good for them. They took advantage of Bard’s wildness thanks to Jose Bautista’s three-run homer and some good pitching.

However, what the Jays also did in this one was ridiculous.

As I mentioned, the erratic Bard hit two Toronto batters — Yunel Escobar and Edwin Encarnacion. Both were unfortunate victims of his wildness(however, both need to learn how to turn away from inside pitches). Sorry to see them, and for that matter, anyone get hit. I hope they are both OK.

But, what angers me about Sunday was what the Blue Jays did in response to the two hit batsmen.

Instead of understanding how wild and awful Bard was, the Blue Jays did something totally stupid and uncalled for: they retaliated.

Now, let me first state that a good part of the unwritten rules of hitting guys in baseball is a joke, but it’s been part of the game for years. I accept that. But, what we saw Sunday was completely uncalled for.

Jays starter Drew Hutchison hit Kelly Shoppach and Kevin Youkilis … on purpose.

Why?

Retaliation for Bard hitting two batters? Really? Really? You’ve got to be kidding me.

It was so bad that when Youk got hit near the head (on top of his shoulder) he had to point to his hip, meaning to at least hit him down low if he was going to purposely take that pitch. He could have easily been hit in the head. Luckily, he wasn’t.

And then, Francisco Cordero threw up and in at Youk in the eighth. Why?

These Jays should know better. John Farrell is one of the best and brightest minds in the game. He knows Bard was wild. He knows Bard had zero idea where the ball was going. And, he sits by and watches Youk get drilled and thrown at again? Suspend him. Same goes for Hutchinson and Cordero.

And, why didn’t the umpires step in and stop it? They could see what happened.

Will it take someone to get killed for all this throwing at people’s heads to stop? It’s dangerous. And it has to stop.

I can only say that I hope that this is the end of it. Before it’s too late.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama‘s campaign says Mitt Romney‘s economic promises didn’t pan out when he was governor of Massachusetts and “won’t work now.”

In a new television advertisement released Monday, the campaign blames Romney for leaving Massachusetts in debt and among the lowest-ranking states in job creation. The ad tells voters that when Romney says what he would do as president, “remember, we’ve heard it all before.”

The ad is part of the targeted effort the Obama campaign launched last week to seek to discredit Romney’s economic record in Massachusetts. It comes as the Obama campaign grapples with its own economic message to voters following an uptick in the nation’s unemployment rate to 8.2 percent.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul, responding to the ad, said the Republican nominee would be happy to compare the 4.7 percent unemployment rate in Massachusetts during his term as governor with Obama’s record on the economy.

“It’s time for a president who has worked in the real economy and understands how to get this economy moving again,” Saul said.

The Obama campaign says the 60-second ad will air in nine battleground states, including Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Miami forward Chris Bosh, sidelined for three weeks with an abdominal strain, is expected to be activated for Game 5 if he doesn’t suffer a setback during workouts over the next two days, according to ESPN.

Recap: Celtics Take Game 4 93-91 In OT; Series Tied 2-2 

Bosh has missed nine games since suffering the injury in Game 1 of the East Semifinals against the Indiana Pacers. He had been working out on-court over the last week and made the trip to Boston for Games 3 and 4 of the Conference Finals.

While it’s unclear if Bosh will be restricted when he returns, he will certainly help Miami stabilize their front-court. Miami has used three different starting centers since Bosh went down, with erratic play from Joel Anthony and Ronnie Turiaf.

Miami has out-rebounded Boston 162-158 in the first four games of the series.

Bosh averaged 14.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in six playoff games this season before being sidelined.
