BOSTON (AP) — State public health officials are proposing a fee structure for the state’s new medical marijuana program.

Under draft regulations filed Friday, patients certified to receive medical marijuana would pay a $50 annual registration fee to the state. Those who qualify for a hardship license to cultivate marijuana at home would pay an additional $100 fee.

The proposed rules call for marijuana dispensaries to pay an initial $1,500 application fee, followed by a $30,000 charge for the second phase of licensing. Both fees would be non-refundable.

Licensed dispensaries would then pay an annual registration fee of $50,000.

The voter-approved law allows for up to 35 dispensaries in Massachusetts to provide marijuana to patients suffering from certain medical conditions.

A public hearing on the proposed fees has been scheduled for June 14.

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – The father of a U.S. Marine killed in the line of duty received a replacement Purple Heart Friday morning.

The original Purple Heart awarded posthumously to Lance Corporal Michael Ford was stolen from his father’s home a few weeks ago. Thieves also took a Purple Heart coin given to the elder Ford by a veteran.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-417247" alt="Joseph Ford holds his son's replacement Purple Heart Friday May 24th. (Photo by Bree Sison)

“I just can’t understand why they would steal them,” Joseph Ford told WBZ-TV.

Congressman Bill Keating and his staff worked to secure the second medal quickly and made the presentation to Ford’s family just before Memorial Day.

“It’s a time in our country when we all look back and try to remember everyone who gave great sacrifice,” Keating said.

Ford was also presented with a letter and a coin from Charlie Company, the group Ford served with when he died in 2006.

The 19-year-old had been in Iraq for a month when his Humvee rolled over an IED. Ford enlisted in the Marines out of high school after hearing a speech by then President George W. Bush on television.

Joseph Ford says he received emails and phone calls from around the country after news of the theft broke. Many veterans offered their own Purple Hearts as replacements.

“It’s been amazing the response I’ve gotten since this incident happened. I can’t thank the American public enough,” said Ford.

BEDFORD (CBS) – Gabriel Gomez did not apologize Friday for calling Rep. Ed Markey “pond scum.”

Gomez, a Republican running against the Democratic congressman for the vacant U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts, is upset with Markey’s latest campaign ad.

The spot blasts Gomez for criticizing President Obama’s release of information about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

An image of Gomez appears next to photos of bin Laden in the commercial.

“I’ve got four young kids, and they gotta sit there and they gotta see an ad with their dad – who served honorably, talk to anybody I served with – whether as a pilot or as a SEAL, anybody I worked with. And for him to be as dirty and low – pond scum – to like to put me up next to bin Laden, he’s just gotta be called what he is,” Gomez told a reporter at the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce Thursday.

When asked about Gomez calling him “pond scum,” Markey said at an event Friday he was not going to engage in “name calling.”

“I’m going to continue to focus on the issues that affect the families of our country. I think that a lot of this is just an attempt to distract,” Markey said.

Talking to reporters outside a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Bedford Friday, Gomez didn’t back down.

“I guess I could’ve gone worse and called him ‘congressman’,” Gomez said while laughing.

“The ad’s very offensive and it is a new low.”

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While the majority of the focus of the thrilling Heat victory in Game 1 will be on LeBron James’ incredible play at the end of the game, there’s another player who was just as key to the Heat getting the win to open the series: Chris Andersen.

Andersen set a career high with field goals made and points by going 7-7 and scoring 16 points in the Heat’s 103-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Andersen managed to do all of that while playing just a little more than 18 minutes and also pulling down five rebounds.

Six of Andersen’s seven shots were assisted including three by LeBron and two by Dwyane Wade. Andersen was constantly open as the Pacers collapsed in to clog up the lane that Wade and LeBron love to attack.

Andersen’s fire and personality on the court has been one of the biggest changes for the team in the second half of the season. His ability to elevate above the rim on both ends of the court has helped give the Heat a much needed extra dimension under the basket.

And Andersen has been playing absolutely lights out for the entire Heat playoffs run. Adding in Andersen’s 7-7 shooting night in Game 1, the Birdman is shooting 29 for 35 in the playoffs, or an astonishing 83 percent.

Since Andersen joined the Heat, Miami has almost been unstoppable and has won 46 of their last 49 games dating back to the regular season.

James summed up Andersen’s impact on the Heat thusly after Game 1, “Without Bird’s energy and effort, we don’t win this game,” according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jonathan Quick made 24 saves in his seventh career playoff shutout, and the Los Angeles Kings moved to the brink of their second straight trip to the Western Conference finals with a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Anze Kopitar and Slava Voynov scored, and Jeff Carter added an empty-net goal as the defending Stanley Cup champions won their 13th consecutive home game in dominant fashion and lead the series 3-2.

Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots for the Sharks, who have played more than 96 minutes without a goal since they appeared to be taking control of the series midway through Game 4.

Game 6 is Sunday night at the Shark Tank.

The home team has won every game in the series, and the Kings remained unbeaten at Staples Center since March 23.

After losing the past two games in San Jose and struggling through much of the past three games overall, the Kings rebounded with another stretch of dominant play from their Conn Smythe Trophy-winning goalie, who also shut out San Jose in the series opener.

Quick won his 27th postseason game, taking sole possession of the franchise record from Kelly Hrudey.

After getting soundly outplayed at the start of the past three games, the Kings met the Sharks’ tempo and urgency from the beginning in Game 5. The Kings sharpened their physical game, outmuscling and outhitting the Sharks to take a 3-2 series lead.

Kopitar opened the scoring late in the second period, tapping in a loose puck after a sustained stretch of pressure on Niemi. Voynov then scored 3 seconds after a penalty expired early in the third, firing home his fourth goal in nine games.

Quick finished up from there, making a spectacular point-blank save on Joe Pavelski a few seconds before Carter wrapped it up with an empty-netter.

Los Angeles, 25-4-1 at home this season, has won seven straight home playoff games dating to last season’s Stanley Cup clincher against New Jersey.

San Jose substantially outplayed the Kings in the first period of the past three games, and Los Angeles cited a strong start as its key priority for Game 5.

The Kings got it, albeit in a scoreless first period, outshooting the Sharks 9-6 while playing a punishing physical game that slowed down Joe Thornton and hampered San Jose’s relentless speed.

The Sharks played roughly 17 minutes without a shot into the second period, but the Kings couldn’t cash in several scoring chances in front of Niemi, including golden opportunities for Mike Richards and Justin Williams.

San Jose got several chances of its own, notably with a 2-on-1 break for Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture, but Quick kept everything out of his net.

Niemi made a spectacular save on Carter’s wraparound chance late in the second period, but that play led to a long stretch of uninterrupted pressure by the Kings.

Kopitar’s tap-in included assists for Williams and Kyle Clifford, who replaced Dustin Brown on the Kopitar-Williams line for Game 5.

The goal was just the second of the postseason for Kopitar, who didn’t score a goal in the Kings’ final 16 regular-season games. The Slovenian center has led Los Angeles in scoring in each of the past six seasons, and he was the postseason’s co-scoring leader last summer with 20 points in 20 games.

The Kings scored again when Trevor Lewis won a faceoff against Thornton, who has dominated the circle in the series.

Lewis, who scored the winning power-play goal late in Game 2, got the puck to Voynov for a long shot through traffic immediately after a power play ended, and the Siberian defenseman matched Carter for the team lead with his fourth goal of the playoffs.

The power play resulted from a goalie interference penalty against TJ Galiardi, who drew the Kings’ ire Wednesday by claiming Quick embellishes contact with opponents to draw undeserved penalties.

NOTES: After sitting out earlier in the postseason with an injured left ankle, Jason Demers got his first action of the postseason for San Jose, which sat LW Tim Kennedy to make room. Demers, normally a defenseman, usually played forward. The Sharks are playing without injured forwards Marty Havlat and Adam Burish. … Los Angeles dressed the same lineup as in Game 4, although coach Darryl Sutter shuffled his lines. … Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer watched the game from seats on the glass.

The man had been spotted in Worcester, Leicester and Paxton earlier this week, between and 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Several people called authorities.

Worcester police announced in a statement Friday they identified the man and interviewed him.

“At this time, it appears that the photos were taken for his job as a Field Inspector. The job requires him to photograph residential properties. He also takes photos of street signs to prove what street he is on. On various assignments, he took pictures of outdoor decorations and children’s toys on the property in order to prove occupancy. His assignments were recently in the areas where the suspicious driver was reported.”

Police said they appreciate the calls from the public and encourage residents to always report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Struggling Rangers center Brad Richards was a healthy scratch Thursday night when New York stayed alive in the Stanley Cup playoffs with a 4-3 overtime victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Boston Bruins.

Richards, a star player earning $12 million this season, stayed on the ice with the extras Thursday during the morning skate. He then confirmed that Rangers coach John Tortorella had called to tell him he would be sitting out.

Tortorella defended his decision after Thursday’s dramatic win.

“He’s a hell of a hockey player that’s having a hell of a time, so I need to make decisions for what I feel is right for a team to win tonight’s game, and that’s why I made that decision,” said Tortorella. “This is a Conn Smythe winner, a guy I’ve grown up with, a guy that I love as a person and a player. But I have to make that decision regarding this.

“So kiss my a– if you want to run something different. It’s not about blaming that guy, and I don’t want anyone to pile on.”

Take Our Poll

Tortorella said the seven or eight minutes Richards has been playing isn’t “good for him.”

“I also feel some other guys have played better, so that’s where he is right now in our lineup,” he said.

New York rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits before Chris Kreider scored the winning goal in overtime to force Game 5 in Boston on Saturday.

Kris Newbury and Micheal Haley replaced Richards and fellow fourth-line forward Arron Asham, who also sat out for the first time in the series that Boston now leads 3-1.

“I don’t know if surprised is the right word for it,” Richards said. “I’m disappointed.”

Haley, who hadn’t played since March 19, made his NHL postseason debut. Newbury was in the lineup for New York’s playoff opener against Washington in the first round, but was scratched for the next nine games.

Newbury played six games during the regular season, and Haley dressed for nine.

Defenseman Anton Stralman, who was injured in the second period of Tuesday night’s loss, was also out of the Game 4 lineup. Veteran Roman Hamrlik, who hadn’t played since April 1 — a 23-game span — replaced him.

Boston used the same lineup from Game 3.

The 33-year-old Richards, an alternate captain who has seven years left on the nine-year, $60 million deal he signed in July 2011, has been largely ineffective in 10 playoff games. He has one goal and no assists and has a minus-3 rating.

“Guys come in and out of the lineup all the time, but Brad is such a big part of this group and this team. I’ll leave that to our coaches,” said goalie Henrik Lundqvist. “It’s their decision. I thought the guys that came in did a great job, they gave us a lot of energy and they played with a lot of edge.”

Richards had already been dropped to the fourth line and had his ice time cut. Richards’ inability to get New York’s woeful power play going left him as an odd-man out.

He said being on the fourth line made it difficult for him to be effective.

“It doesn’t work for him,” Tortorella said of Richards. “I’m not playing him the proper way, but I can’t put him in a situation on the other lines because I think the other lines stepped up.

“I am looking to get some sort of identity on that fourth line, and that’s where Brad comes out and I go with these guys. We got some fresh legs and enthusiasm.”

Richards, in his 12th NHL season, had only 10 shifts and a career playoff-low 8:10 of ice time Tuesday in New York’s 2-1 loss that put the Rangers on the brink of elimination.

Richards is a prime candidate to have his contract bought out after this season. After this year’s lockout, each team was given the option of two amnesty buyouts that could be used to terminate contracts before next season or the 2014-15 season.

The buyouts will cost two-thirds of the remaining amount on a deal — paid evenly over twice its remaining length — and will count against the players’ overall share in revenues, but not the individual team’s salary cap. A buyout for Richards would cost the Rangers $24 million over 14 years.

Richards, who had 11 goals and 23 assists in 46 games during the regular season, was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP when he and the Tampa Bay Lightning captured the Stanley Cup under Tortorella in 2004.

“Nothing’s over,” Richards said. “Work harder and try my best to never let it happen again.”

I will start off with the good news. It looks like this will be a great Memorial day with sunshine and temps climbing into the mid-upper 60′s. Great weather for the parades and honoring those that have given their lives for this country. Once the sun returns, temps will be well on their way to climbing into the 70′s for the midweek!

OK…now the bad news. This is no way to unofficially open up the summer season. Showers and storms last night dumped a widespread 1-2″ rainfall across the region. The ground is saturated, so any more downpours could start top give way to some localized flash flooding as streams will be quick to rise. Mild southerly winds have kept temps in the 60′s this morning and that is where they will remain this afternoon. Some areas may approach near 70. While the heaviest of the rain and storms has shifted off the coast, there is still a steady feed of moisture streaming up the coast ahead of a slow moving cold front. This front will trigger periodic showers or a thunderstorm through the afternoon and evening before stalling off our coast.

Winds will be shifting from the south to the NW later today as the front passes. This cooler wind direction will direct cooler air in from Canada. Along this stalled front off the coast and area of Low pressure will sit and deepen. The atmosphere will be stacked with a huge upper low capturing the surface low and slowly directing into the Gulf of Main over the course of the weekend. Showers continue tonight through Saturday…with rain heavy at times…especially inland. With rain and cool breezy NW winds on Saturday…highs will remain steady and chilly in the 40′s and Lwr 50′s. An additional 1-2″ of rain could fall by Sunday…with heavier amounts in the NW. Enough cold air could mix in Saturday night that snow will likely fall in the highest elevations of VT & NW on the backside of this low!

BY Sunday, the Upper low will begin to low lift out. Early showers should begin to taper off with clouds beginning to lift and break by the afternoon hours. I still expect Mostly cloudy skies with temps cool in the 50′s with breezy west winds…but the drier weather will be a welcome addition to addition to the weekend…By mid to late afternoon skies will be breaking are starting to fill with sunshine. By Monday, sunshine will be out in full with dry warmer west winds and highs climbing into the mid-upper 60′s

Thereafter, a huge upper level ridge will be shifting to the east coast allowing for plenty of sunshine and warming temperatures into the 70′s and eventually into the 80′s by the end of the week. Hang in there folks! This Weekend will be getting better before you know it!

BOSTON (CBS) — The Brooklyn Nets need a head coach, and with heretofore unfounded rumors persisting that Doc Rivers might be considering leaving the Boston Celtics, the Nets figured they’d take a shot in the dark and ask the Celtics for permission to talk with Doc.

Not surprisingly, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge gave them a pretty flat “no” in response.

According to ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan, Ainge denied the Nets a conversation with Rivers about Brooklyn’s head-coaching vacancy and said that Rivers will be back as Celtics coach next year.

“Doc has told me he’s coming back,” Ainge told MacMullan. “I talk to him almost every day about our team and what we are going to do moving forward.”

Rivers, 51, signed a five-year extension for about $35 million in May 2011.

BOSTON (AP) — Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is lending his political clout to fellow Democrat Edward Markey in the state’s special U.S. Senate election.

Menino endorsed Markey on Friday during an event at a Boston union hall.

Among other things, the mayor credited Markey for being out front on gun control and for securing federal funding for medical research institutions, a key part of the city’s economy.

Markey said he was honored by the endorsement.

The Democrat, who was first elected to the House in 1976, has been criticized by Republican nominee Gabriel Gomez for being in office too long. But Menino, the city’s longest-serving mayor, said longevity should be considered a good thing.

Menino wields a potent political organization in Boston that could help Markey’s get-out-the-vote effort in the June 25 election.

The Bruins had a chance to put the Rangers away in four games, but due to some breakdowns and soft goals the Rangers held off elimination with a 4-3 overtime win.

98.5 The Sports Hub’s Bruins color analyst Bob Beers joined Toucher & Rich to discuss the Game 4 loss to the Rangers, who is to blame for some of the soft goals the Bruins gave up, the chances Dennis Seidenberg returns sooner rather than later and Tyler Seguin getting a goal.

The Bruins were up 3-2 until a too many men on the ice penalty put the Rangers on the power play and they tied it up at three. There was some question as to whether or not that was the correct call to make in that situation. The guys asked Beers if he agreed with the call the officials made.

Dennis Seidenberg hasn’t played since Game 7 against the Maple Leaf, but could the injured defenseman be close to returning? Would Claude Julien sit Dougie Hamilton to play Seidenberg even if Seidenberg isn’t a hundred percent?

Tyler Seguin finally scored a playoff goal. Would it help to move him back up to the second line?

One of Rich’s favorite guys is soccer announcer Ray Hudson. Hudson is a soccer commentator on Gol TV and NBC Sports. He’s known for just spouting out crazy statements that at times don’t make sense.

In a championship game when Real Madrid scored a game winning goal Hudson let loose this gem about players giving off “teardrops the size of pineapple chunks!” The guys have played many other calls by Hundson over the years and he’s at it again.

Take a listen as T&R play some his newest call. The guys also played great commentary from a MMA fight where the announcer pronounces one of the fighter’s names funny.

BOSTON (CBS) — After coming as close as possible to letting a 3-1 series lead slip away in the first round, and with the historic 2010 collapse after leading 3-0 forever hanging over them, the story is going to be pushed that doubt is starting to creep into the Bruins’ locker room.

But Claude Julien said after Thursday’s Game 4 loss that there’s little to be worried about.

“There’s no panic here,” the Bruins’ head coach said after the 4-3 overtime loss. “Had we been outworked and not been there at all, I’d be talking differently here. But we didn’t get outworked. All it was is our team didn’t execute as well as we have been lately. We gotta go back home and play a better game.

“Our work ethic was there. The things that we did extremely well [in previous games] weren’t easy tonight.”

As for questions about the Bruins’ struggles to close out series, Julien wasn’t willing to revisit the Toronto series, deflecting a question by stating, “That’s last series.”

With Tuukka Rask falling onto his backside to allow the first goal, and with Zdeno Chara unaware that Derek Stepan was bearing down on him to steal the puck for the second goal, Julien said those two mistakes were the most costly in the loss.

“I felt we didn’t get outworked, but we didn’t play as well as we could have throughout the whole game,” Julien said. “The other thing is, when you give them two gift goals, eventually it’s gonna hurt. So that’s what happened.”

Those weren’t the only mistakes, though, as Tyler Seguin jumped over the boards too early on a line change, leading to a too many men on the ice penalty shortly after Seguin’s goal had put the Bruins ahead 3-2. The Rangers’ power play, previously unsuccessful in all attempts this series, finally found success on the ensuing man advantage. Again, the Bruins had lost their lead, and it was a mistake for which Seguin shouldered the blame.

What the Bruins are left with is a 3-1 series lead and the knowledge that had they made even one fewer mistake, they likely would have done enough to earn them a victory and a trip to the conference finals. On Saturday in Game 5, they’ll have the chance to make amends and play a better game, something every Bruins player vowed to do in the losing locker room.

Maybe they will, maybe they won’t, but one thing they definitely won’t do is panic.

Thursday night was Terry Francona’s first visit to Fenway Park as a manager of another team since he and the Red Sox parted ways after the 2011 season. Francona brought his first-place Cleveland Indians to Boston and served the Sox a 12-3 lose in the first of a four game series.

Sean McAdam joined 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher & Rich to talk about the return of Terry Francona to Fenway, the health of Will Middlebrooks and the performance of Jacoby Ellsbury.

After the first inning of Thursday night’s game fans were treated to a video that highlighted some of Francona’s best times with Boston. Did the former manager spend any time with upper management? Is this smaller market more enjoyable after managing in a city like Boston?

The guys then took some time to focus on things the Sox are currently dealing with. Will Middlebrooks left last night’s game with back spasms and this could put the Red Sox in a difficult spot. Do the Sox have an option to rest him for some time?

They also discussed Jacoby Ellsbury and his so-so performances. Is he hurting his stock in a contract year? Will he have to take a short deal in hopes of driving up his numbers and then cash in after that deal runs out?

Plus, what’s it like in the press box at a Red Sox game when the Bruins are playing big games?

Nine-year-old Ryan Hoelzel saved up $350 to buy the 500-pound, one-year-old cow he named Panda.

“I did it with all my Christmas money, Easter money, birthday money, and any kind of money I got,” the fourth-grade student from Epping told WBZ-TV.

But minutes after he bought Panda, the calf jumped a fence and escaped the family farm.

Dozens of neighbors and friends, and even police helped in the search.

Panda returned Thursday night, enticed by a female.

“The gentleman that we got him from brought over another heifer and put her out in a pen and it has lured him back in,” Ryan’s mother Mary told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Friday.

“I was kinda like… yesss!” Ryan told WBZ.

Panda spent the night on the Hoelzel’s farm, but he won’t be staying for long.

“(Ryan) knows he can’t keep him because (Panda) just jumps our fences and he is a little too big for Ryan,” Mary said.

Hoelzel had planned to show Panda in several 4-H fairs this summer, but he will have to be returned to his original owner.

Mary said the deadline for entering the 4-H program is June 1, so they’re not sure if Ryan is going to be able to show in competitions this year.

But, he can go visit Panda at the farm.

“I am very proud of him,” Mary said. “He has been such a trooper through all of this.”

Ryan said he’s not mad at Panda for running away.

“He’s curious,” Ryan told WBZ. “He also has the friendliest set of eyes.”

BOSTON (CBS) — Sure, the Bruins very nearly pulled off a Game 4 victory, but did they really deserve it?

They literally handed a goal to a dead, desperate team in front of a listless home crowd to completely change the environment late in the second period. The Bruins had just taken a 2-0 lead, and tweets about the Rangers’ summer plans immediately began to fill the Internet void. But there wasn’t much time for wise-cracking at the expense of the Rangers, because Tuukka Rask very quickly became the butt of jokes. Tuukka fell on his tuchus, the puck trickled past him, and the 17,000 folks at Madison Square Garden finally remembered they were attending a hockey game.

The Rangers’ second goal wasn’t 100 percent the fault of the Bruins, because Derek Stepan deserves credit for out-hustling and out-smarting the Bruins’ captain behind the Boston net. Still, the Bruins were just a mess on that sequence. How neither Rask nor Dougie Hamilton alerted Chara to the forechecker bearing down on him, and how Chara was completely oblivious to Stepan’s presence is hard to figure, but it was another gift-wrapped goal for New York.

After that, for the first time since probably Game 1, it was a hockey game, and the Rangers just beat the Bruins. And even though they had ample opportunity to win despite the blunders, the Bruins simply didn’t deserve it.

Now, just like they did against Toronto, they have to keep grinding in a physical playoff series instead of resting at home with their feet up. But before we completely move on to what the future holds, let’s run through some quick leftover thoughts from the Bruins’ 4-3 loss in Game 4.

–Tuukka Rask said of his untimely tumble, “Looks pretty bad on TV, I bet.”

It did, but not any worse than his amazing post-shootout loss wipeout from March. So … at least there’s that.

–You know how in elementary school, the firemen used to always visit and tell you to map out an emergency plan with your family in the event of a house fire? Well, if you’re a Bruins fan and you’re sitting on your couch, having a nice taco beef dip and/or a refreshing adult beverage, enjoying a playoff game and feeling good about life, and you hear the words “too many men on the ice,” you need to activate your own sort of emergency response plan.

Shut the TV off, put the food in the fridge, dump out your drink (in the sink or down your esophagus, whichever) and go run around the block for 10 minutes. You’re not going to enjoy what follows after you hear “too many men on the ice” so you might as well get some exercise in and burn off the rage.

–I don’t know which linesman it was who screamed “Nnnnooooooooo!!!!” every time a team crossed the blue line without going offside, but he deserves a raise of some sort. He also probably should have stepped between John Tortorella and the ref during the F-bomb-fueled exchange caught on camera in the third period.

“[Bad word] you!”

“[Bad word you!"

(Tortorella crafting another expletive-laden response.)

(Lineman skates over.)

"Nnnnooooo!!!!!"

--I wrote about how terrible/suspicious the officiating was in Game 3, but in Game 4, I took no issues. Though I did find it odd that Derick Brassard was allowed to drop his gloves and grab Brad Marchand's jersey in the middle of play without getting assessed any sort of penalty. Perhaps the refs just felt bad that seemingly nobody is willing to waste their time by fighting Brassard, they just let it go.

--Nathan Horton scored a nice goal, no doubt, but David Krejci's wizardry in the neutral zone on the rush that led to the goal was fantastic. He calmly stick-handled with one hand around a poke-checking Stepan and then knew to get rid of a pass just before taking a hit by Ryan Callahan. He avoided the hit too, thereby enabling himself to join the rush and dish to Horton. A+ for Krejci, the playoff points leader, on that play.

–I’m not the guy that likes to sit around and judge fans, but if you’ll pardon me for a moment, I’m going to do exactly that.

The crowd at Madison Square Garden was sitting for overtime period. Sitting down in their seats. I don’t know that I’ve seen that before. Overtime in the NHL playoffs is the supreme sporting event. If you can attend any game, it should be an NHL postseason overtime game. And when you’re there, you should be standing the entire time. And you should be going nuts.

I understand Rangers fans might have been in “watch with fear of the season ending” mode, but you can at least try to be a little excited. Sitting in your seat like you’re at a Yanni concert is unacceptable.

–NHL.com breaks up its game highlights into goals, hits and saves. Somehow, Johnny Manchuk’s devastating open-ice hit on Derek Dorsett in overtime did not make the cut. In fact, the only hit available for viewing is perhaps the least memorable instance of body contact in playoff hockey history.

Whoever cut the clip of that “hit” should find something better to do, I think.

–Photography is pretty outstanding sometimes.

<img class="size-large wp-image-417119" alt="Chris Kreider (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images) " src="http://cbsboston.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/chris-kreider.jpg?w=420&h=280" width="420" height="280" title="Rask, Chara And Co.
–Tyler Seguin finally got off the schneid with a goal and an assist, which was good for him, but as far as the unproductive forwards go, I thought Jaromir Jagr had a great game. Some of the passes he was making were just pure magic. He made that one pass in the first period through a defenseman’s skates that hit Brad Marchand right in the tape, but it looked like Marchand was either not expecting the pass to make it through or simply lost control trying to put the puck on his backhand. Had Marchand finished off that one, it would’ve been one of the prettier goals of the whole postseason.

Jagr fed Marchand again in the second period, this time finding him in the slot, and Lundqvist had to make an exceptional save to prevent that one from making Bruins highlight reels as well.

Jagr made a few of those crafty passes, and aside from his center-ice takedown that drew a two-minute penalty, he had his best game in a while.

–I found Henrik Lundqvist’s assessment of the series coming down to “lucky bounces” to be laughable, but my oh my did he play outstanding on Thursday night. Two saves on hard shots in the third period by Seguin and Torey Krug stood out, but he earned every one of those 37 saves. The Bruins did not make it easy on him.

Finally, The King had earned the right to rock his crown hat after the game.

–I’m not going to pile on Rask, because I think there’s a little too much of that in general. If you want to read a very fair take on the situation Rask put himself in, Matt Kalman did a very good job of it right here. But the statistics that came out immediately after the loss are impossible to ignore. CSNNE put the stats out there, so they get the credit:

In non-closeout situations in the playoffs, Rask is 12-2 with a 1.98 goals-against average and .936 save percentage.

In closeout situation in the playoffs, where a win sends the Bruins to the next round, Rask is 2-8 with a 3.20 GAA and .890 save percentage.

It’s concerning because it’s not really a small sample size, and it starts to make you think the stumble to his backside and the brief nap on Stepan’s goal aren’t just coincidences, that Rask has some sort of mental block when it comes to moments such as these, or that he lets down, or something.

If it’s any consolation, Rask played outstanding after allowing the third goal, and he can’t be faulted for a perfect play that won the game in overtime, but man, those numbers are eye-catching.

–This season alone in closeout games, Rask is 1-3 with a 2.89 GAA and an .899 save percentage.

–It’s always nice, though, when you have a bad game that includes consecutive point-blank saves on one of the game’s most dangerous goal scorers.

–When explaining his gaffe that led to the first goal, Rask said, “I lost my balance, and the rest is history.”

For Rask’s sake, he better hope it’s just a footnote in history, rather than a seminal moment in the tale of the 2013 Bruins.

–Because the world is full of unoriginal, lazy people, you’re going to hear a lot about 2010 in the coming days. It’s just going to happen. I know that 2011 happened and should have erased any and all 2010 references, I know that this team is worlds apart from the 2010 team, I know, I know, I know. But I also know that people are going to talk about the 2010 collapse and try to stir up some panic in Boston.

But the only real reason the Bruins and fans should be nervous is the fact that they will be playing on Saturday, and if they make another series of mistakes or if the Rangers actually spend 60 minutes trying to win a game, it can force them to play again on Monday. Meanwhile, the Penguins should wrap things up on Friday night against Ottawa and will have time to relax while the Bruins play at least one more bruising battle with the Rangers. Dennis Seidenberg will likely have to step back into the lineup, when I’m sure the Bruins would have preferred giving him an extra five or six days to heal up. Dougie Hamilton’s confidence may be shot, and stats like the aforementioned Rask-in-closeout-situations numbers will continue to circulate.

The Bruins should still win this series, and they should do so on Saturday. If/when they do, the people who yapped about 2010 for 48 hours will forget they ever yapped about it, and life will go on. But even though collapse talk is more than a little bit wild, the Bruins — just like they did by lollygagging in the first round — made their jobs much tougher, and they really can only blame themselves.

BOSTON (CBS) — Terry Francona knew his return to Fenway Park would be an emotional one, and sure enough, it was.

After the first inning of Thursday night’s game between the Indians and Red Sox at Fenway Park, fans were treated to a video of the former Sox currently with the Indians, before the video highlighted some of Francona’s best times with Boston. The manager, who didn’t necessarily want the spotlight on him, waved his appreciation to the crowd and tapped his heart.

“I tried to keep my emotions inside,” Francona said. “When they did that thing after the first inning, I was honored, and I was also thrilled that they showed Cashy [Kevin Cash], Mike Aviles, Matt [Albers], Rich Hill and then Millsy [Brad Mills] standing next to me, who may be my best friend in life. So to share that was pretty awesome.”

With the way Francona’s tenure abruptly and unceremoniously ended following the 2011 season, and with Francona’s book that came out this past offseason, it was surprising to see the former Sox manager talking with Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino prior to the game. Yet Francona seemed to indicate the two have remained in contact with each other.

“There’s an enormous amount of respect,” Francona said of his relationship with Lucchino. “I didn’t like the way things ended, but he went out of his way at the [100th] anniversary to talk to me, and I probably wasn’t the most pleasant. And tonight, he just came down to say hello. I appreciated it.”

Francona stressed that he in no way wanted Thursday night’s game to be about him, and his players did take care of business with a 12-3 blowout victory. Still, he expressed gratitude to the fans for showing their appreciation.

“I appreciate it. It was very heart-felt,” Francona said. “Again, you don’t want to be the main focus. You want to let the players play. But it felt good. I hope they realize that.”

BOSTON (CBS) – Forget hockey’s Stanley Cup waiting to be presented and traveling to the home city, JetBlue will settle for their official J.D. Power Award that arrived at the airline’s headquarters in New York on May 22nd, the day before the carrier started service to Philadelphia from Logan Airport.

The award will travel to all JetBlue cities in the next few months and Boston was the first stop for the award presentation.

JetBlue has won the award for the best customer service among low-cost airlines in North America for nine years in a row.

It was a toss-up for JetBlue’s crew members in Terminal C at Logan to have their picture taken with the actual award or with a costumed Ben Franklin representing the city of Philadelphia.

As the Franklin look-alike was quick to point out, Ben was actually born in Boston at 17 Milk Street downtown on January 17, 1706, although he is better known in Philadelphia. Playing the part was Dick Elliott of Andover who has been acting as the great Franklin for 25 years at functions and parades.

On May 23rd, JetBlue started flights to its 78th destination from Boston. It will bring lower cost flights to the Philadelphia market as the airline continues its expansion to attract business service. The service will feature five flights a day.

Between June 1st and September 28th, fares will be as low as $39 one way. Holiday blackout dates will apply.

Marty St. George, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Commercial Strategy, made brief remarks before the first flight and went on to Philadelphia on the 100-seat Embracer jet that was almost full for the first flight.

In its continuing partnership with First Book, JetBlue donated 1,776 books to the to Stonehurst Hills Elementary school in Upper Darby Pennsylvania and KenCrest Services.

With several new routes out of Boston, Logan Airport will accommodate more than 30 million passengers a year for the first time. JetBlue has about 23 percent of the Boston traffic and is the number one passenger carrier at Logan.

On November 8, JetBlue will begin flights at the Worcester Airport to Florida. The airline will celebrate its 10th anniversary at Logan Airport next January.

BOSTON (CBS) – Some critics say the Boy Scouts’ new policy on gay members does not go far enough.

More specifically, they say it’s not consistent enough to make sense – not because it allows openly gay youngsters into the organization, but because it does not allow for gay adults.

Just think about what happens when a gay young man joins the Scouts and excels, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout. A dream for a lot of young people.

But then that model scout turns 18.

Would he be forced to quit?

Under the current guidelines, the answer is apparently yes. A birthday could be enough to force anyone out of the Scouts.

It’s not a stretch to think more young people will therefore stay in the closet. Forced to lie about their sexual orientation so they won’t be forced to leave the Scouts when they’re older.

Most Americans seem to think the Scouts are on the right side of history here. Many polls have shown majority support for opening the Scouts to gay members and leaders.

Cultural changes like these are never easy or neat. And the Scouts are far from the first major American organization to tackle this issue. None are bigger than the Pentagon, which saw the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 2011.

Not to mention the countless members of Congress who have announced support of gay marriage just this year.

That’s why some argue that the Boy Scouts are finally coming back in the mainstream.

BOSTON (CBS) — There is a new chapter in the tit-for-tat between the prosecution and defense teams in the James ‘Whitey’ Bulger case.

Bulger’s attorneys want the judge to clamp down on what government witnesses can say on the stand.

Court documents filed Thursday show “the witnesses should not be permitted to discuss the impact that the death of their loved ones has had on their family. This testimony would serve only to provoke an emotional response among the jury.”

Victim’s families call the request outrageous.

Former District Attorney Gerry Leone – who will be WBZ’s legal analyst for the trial – says try as they might, emotions are hard to control.

“I don’t know if you can tamp down emotions of victims’ families and frankly shouldn’t,” he said. “This is a public trial about heinous crimes.”

Patricia Donahue’s name is on the government’s list that includes 82 potential witnesses including former Bulger cohorts, forensics experts, former FBI and State Police as well as a glimpse of what’s to come – 1,174 exhibits.

Leone says they are a reminder of the tragic nature of the case.

There are a flurry of filings leading up to the trial, including one from the government essentially requesting a gag order on defense attorney J.W. Carney, who is notorious for post-hearing press conferences.

He has called them “bullies” in response.

BOSTON (CBS) — Tuukka Rask has had his share of “YouTube sensation” moments throughout his career.

Most recently, he slammed his stick against the boards after a shootout loss in the regular season, and the recoil effect planted him on his rear end before he could step through the bench door.

He’s typically able to laugh along with the rest of us who witness his gaffes, especially when they only come after the Bruins missed out on one point in the standings. Now that a couple of miscues cost the Bruins a playoff game, it’ll be interesting to see how the Bruins’ goaltender responds.

Rask finished Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Thursday with 28 saves on 32 shots. But a physical error and a mental error that led to the New York Rangers’ first two goals helped extend this series in a 4-3 Rangers overtime win.

The first gaffe was somewhat excusable. Rask lost his footing and was unable to recover from his seat-plant to stop Carl Hagelin’s shot after it skidded off Johnny Boychuk’s stick. The goal cut the Bruins’ lead to 2-1 and gave the Rangers, and Madison Square Garden, previously non-existent life.

However, it was the error he made along with Zdeno Chara that really made you wonder if Rask was begging to add a little drama to this series. Physical errors happen and you accept them. Mental errors, when the stakes are so high, are inexcusable.

With the Bruins protecting a 2-1 lead early in the third, Rask played the puck to Chara behind the Boston goal. Chara, who earlier in the game had a blind pass below the goal line intercepted by Derek Stepan (who set up a Ryan McDonagh shot from the slot that Rask stopped) again lost the puck to Stepan.

This time, Stepan kept the puck and stuffed it in while Rask was out of position and getting back into his crease as though he was taking a stroll through Boston Common.

The Bruins regained the lead and lost it again en route to the loss. They could’ve fallen even earlier had Rask not regained his form and made some brilliant stops, including a shoulder stop of Brian Boyle not too long after the Rangers center’s game-tying goal. Rask also denied a couple of point-blank saves on Rick Nash early in overtime.

Those plays came without time to stew over the mistakes. Now Game 5 is Saturday night at TD Garden. Rask’s fall on the Hagelin goal and screw-up with Chara on the Stepan goal are going to be on all the highlight shows. They’re going to be talked about in the dressing room, on the radio and on every street in Boston. Those discussions will be piled on top of more talk about the Bruins’ inability to close out series and the eerie resemblance Game 4 in 2013 had to Game 4 in 2010, when Simon Gagne started Philadelphia’s historic comeback with an overtime goal.

Rask thinks he’s a money goaltender and so do most observers. After stealing defeat from the jaws of victory, a money goaltender would bounce back and be impenetrable in Game 5. We’ll see if Rask can live up to that moniker.

WORCESTER (CBS) — Police are warning people in several towns about a suspicious man snapping photos of children.

Update: Worcester Police Find Suspicious Man

“It’s just scary, and I want him gone,” said Lisa Prodromidis, as she wiped away tears. “Just him seeing my kids and trying to take them from me.”

Leicester Police say the man was spotted there Wednesday. Another resident had seen him back on May 8th. Then there were similar reports in Paxton and Worcester.

“There were children out playing and this person or persons were out in the vehicle taking pictures of these children,” said Worcester Police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst.

“He picked the wrong neighborhood,” said Rich Power, who lives on Foxmeadow Drive, where one of the incidents was reported. “Everyone’s keeping an eye out. People are being vigilant.

A police cruiser went up and down his street.

Courtney Fluet decided to pick her little sister up from the bus stop.

“She texted me awhile ago and said ‘Can you pick me up at the bus stop,’ and then after we heard about this, I went and got her.”

Police are looking for a black 2-door Acura or a Ford Ranger, and a white man with balding hair, possibly in his 40′s.

All of the reported incidents have been between 3:00pm and 5:00.

EAST BROOKFIELD (CBS) — It’s the time of year some residents may see bears.

And lately, they are showing no fear in one central Massachusetts town.

East Brookfield Police posted a photo on their Facebook page of one bear that literally came knocking at someone’s sliding glass door.

It happened Wednesday and experts say it was most likely looking for food.

There have been a number of recent sightings, including one last weekend, right in the middle of Route 31 and another in Leicester.

Alleged murderers with meat-cleavers hacked a UK soldier to death while bystanders looked on. Then someone video-taped an alleged perpetrator’s explanation:

“”We swear by Almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day. This British soldier is an eye for an eye a tooth for tooth.” “We apologise that women had to see this today but in our lands our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government. They don’t care about you”

Are you disturbed by the fact that no bystanders intervened to save the soldier?

Do you believe that the situation would have turned out differently had this taken place in Boston? Would Bostonians have leapt into action?

Does this augment the case against gun control in the United States?

LEOMINSTER (CBS) — The NFL is spending tens of millions of dollars trying to figure out how to prevent concussions.

A trio of sixth graders in Leominster may have come up with a way that costs a lot less.

They looked at the traditional football helmet and the padding inside. Now, their solution is getting attention.

Next month, the trio will tote their testing contraption to Washington, having just won the regional competition.

Eric Jenny, John Liddy and Christopher Mabie say their idea gelled when they noted so many football stars suffering from concussions.

The contest is called eCYBERMISSION and challenges students to identify a real-world problem and come up with a solution.

Their research evolved into a modified hockey helmet, a homemade device used to measure force, and several types of padding, which they tested both inside and outside the hard shell.

When they graphed the results, they were amazed.

They took their findings to a helmet maker and a neurologist.

Dr. Doug Katz is a brain injury specialist bent on reducing the nearly four million concussions suffered by Americans every year.

“I find it very exciting,” Katz said. “It caught my attention that these young people were looking into the same issue.”

And now, each could pocket a $200 savings bond at the national competition in DC and the middle school students say they have what it takes to win.

BOSTON (AP) — Terry Francona is back at Fenway Park as an opposing manager for the first time since he left the Red Sox.

Francona brought the Cleveland Indians to Boston for a four-game series starting Thursday night. He was let go by the Red Sox after eight years as their manager following a September 2011 collapse left them out of the playoffs.

He was relaxed and spoke calmly for about 20 minutes in the visiting dugout before the game. After Francona met with reporters, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz came into the dugout and they embraced.

Francona said the Indians arrived in Boston at 5 a.m. and he’s been too busy to think whether he’d be emotional coming back to Fenway.

Felger and Massarotti are broadcasting from Ace Ticket Studio at Kenmore and discussing the Boston Red Sox and the return of Terry Francona. Francona returns to Fenway as the manager of the Cleveland Indians. Tonight kicks off a four-game series for the Sox against the Tribe. Are the Sox better off with Francona or current manager John Farrell? Have there been any second guesses with John Farrell since taking over as Sox manager? The guys also continue to talk about Doc Rivers’ future as the Boston Celtics head coach. Does Doc have all the power when it comes to deciding whether or not he will return to Boston? In New England Patriots new, Tom Brady spoke today and said that his new contract had no connections to bringing Wes Welker back to New England.
During Hour 3 of Felger and Massarotti, the guys discussed the NBA Playoffs series between the Miami Heat and the Indian Pacers.

BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Celtics principal owner Wyc Grousbeck joined 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Massarotti on Thursday, shedding some light on the future of head coach Doc Rivers.

One week ago, Celtics president of Basketball Ops. Danny Ainge said Rivers will return to coach the team next season. However, Danny never heard that from Doc, and Doc has yet to come out with his plans.

Though Grousbeck hasn’t heard it from Doc either, he’s also saying Rivers will be back next season.

“Our indications are that Doc is coming back. Typically — and it’s similar to Kevin Garnett, as an example — everyone is tired, burned out and frustrated (after the season ends); losing to the Knicks is something I never wanted to experience in my life,” said Grousbeck. “Everybody gets time to unwind and decompress. I expect Doc will help Danny with the draft workouts, to be in the war room June 27, and over the free agency period after that.”

“Between now and July 15 there is a lot of work to do to put the team together, and I expect Doc to be there.”

Grousbeck said Doc’s closest relationship on the team is with Ainge.

“I think Danny really spoke for him. They had been in communication and I think Danny went ahead and said it,” said Grousbeck. “I respect Doc too much to speak for him at this point; I hope he’s back. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t, but he can change his mind on Labor Day. I hope he doesn’t do that.”

Also, what is Wyc’s take on the futures of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. And what is the Celtics plan for the future? Find out as Wyc Grousbeck joins Felger & Mazz!

May 25, 2013
Sequestration cuts are causing havoc on programs which help our children across the nation. More than 70,000 children from poor families are being eliminated from the gold-standard Head Start program, which was created in 1964 to help break the cycle of poverty, providing low income children ages 3-5 and their families with a vehicle to better their lives. Here in Boston, sequestration cuts will cause 200 – 300 low income children to be cut from the program this fall. On this edition of Centro, we’ll you what’s happening with the Boston Head Start program. WBZ’s Yadires Nova-Salcedo talks with ABCD’s Director of Head Start & Children’s Services, Yvette Rodriguez. Tune in!

BOSTON (CBS) — After spending 39 days in the hospital, Jane Richard has been released.

The family also says they are planning a memorial service for their son Martin on June 9. It would have been his 9th birthday.

The family released the following statement Thursday afternoon:

We are pleased to share news that Jane was discharged from Boston Children’s Hospital this morning. She was hospitalized in the ICU there for 39 days, during which time she underwent 12 surgeries. Today Jane is in good spirits and looking forward to beginning the next phase of her recovery. We all shared very emotional goodbyes with the doctors, nurses and staff at Children’s, who have taken such good care of not only Jane, but all of us.

Jane was transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital where she will undergo rehab to regain her strength, balance and stamina. Jane and her body will ultimately dictate the timeline for her stay at Spaulding. Jane’s stay will serve as a bridge to what will be the “new normal” for Jane and our family going forward.

While we remain devastated over Martin’s death and all that has happened to us, Jane’s determination for getting better is an inspiring source of strength for the entire family. We will also be moving from the Longwood Medical Area to accommodations that allow us to remain close to Jane.

Finally, we want friends in our community to know that a Mass will be offered in Martin’s memory on June 9, 2013, which would have been his 9th birthday. It will be the 10:30 AM “Family Mass” at Saint Ann Church in Dorchester.

DEDHAM (CBS) — Gary Alan Irving will serve two consecutive sentences of 18-20 years, totaling 36 to 40 years in prison.

That 52-year-old’s sentence was handed down Thursday by a Superior Court judge in Dedham.

In 1978, Irving was a teenager, living on the South Shore. In July of that year, he went on a rampage, raping three teenage girls at knife-point.

He was convicted, but fled the state just hours before he was supposed to report to prison.

After 34 years, the Massachusetts State Police Fugitive Squad found him, living in Gorham, Maine.

Before his sentencing Thursday, prosecutor Michelle Armour said, “this sentence reflects the heinous and depraved character of the defendant.”

And the sister of one of the victims said the sentence was appropriate, adding that none of the victims ever married or had children.

“What he took from them they can never get back, so it’s good he’ll spend a long time behind bars,” the woman said.
