As we approach the holiday weekend signs are pointing to a rough few days with numerous showers and much colder temps. A coldfront is approaching from the west and along it there are soaking thunderstorms. The greatest threat with these storms is the potential for temporary street flooding and rapid rises of small creeks and streams. The most prone are of the State to this flash flooding will be Central and Western MA. As this front moves into the picture an area of low pressure will develop to our south and move north through the course of the night with another shield of rain.

Friday will remain unsettled as the front stalls over the region and scattered showers and downpours will pop-up throughout the day. Temps will start out muggy and mild in the upper 60s but end up cooler in the lower 60s by the end of the day.

The front will stall just offshore and a strong piece of upper level energy will dive toward the East Coast. This will spawn a new low that will intensify quickly in our coastal waters. The low will spin up additional rain and create a raw NE wind putting Saturday in the washout category. Temps will barely clear 50 degrees.

The low will be stacked and there won’t be much to move it along…therefore much of Sunday is in jeopardy as well. Showers will linger for at least the first half of the day. Winds will start to back to the NW in the afternoon and that will bring in slightly drier air so hopefully the windshift will shut the showers off so we can salvage the second half of the afternoon.

Memorial Day will easily be the pick of the weekend…sunshine will return, although cumulus clouds will pop-up across the sky…but most if not all rain showers will retreat to the Northern New England mountains. Temps will reach the middle 60s on Monday.

The cool, clammy weather did hang in tough over the coastal plain yesterday as expected but that will all change today as a warm front tracks north-northeastward this morning. It is already very humid and in the middle 60s just south of Boston and that air will pour into the city and eventually stream into northeastern MA and southeastern NH. It may run into resistance on the ME coast. Many showers and some boomers are popping up this morning in the warm, muggy sector that contains a busy wind from the southwest which will spike up to 15-30 mph during the day. So you can expect a passing shower or boomer at any time today with most of the action west of the I-95 corridor. There should be few or no showers over southeastern MA and Cape Cod through most of the afternoon. There are several layers of clouds passing over the region today but I think that there will be some breakage to enable at least splashes of sunshine from place to place. This should give a boost to the temperatures with afternoon highs of 78-82 except closer to 68-70 at south-facing coastal areas and 50s in ME. The greatest risk of severe thunderstorms is placed over eastern PA, much of NY and western New England. Some of that action could stray into central MA and NH this afternoon and evening. Keep an eye on the sky as a cold frontal boundary pushes into the steamy air.

As energy dives into a developing trough of low pressure digging toward the Mid-Atlantic area, it will intensify and close off into a deep circulation which qualifies for my “Wheel Of Misfortune”! I am as upset and distraught as you are that this system is going to spoil so many wonderful outside activities that have been planned for this holiday weekend. Graduations, parties, weddings, parades, sports, etc. will be impacted by this poor timing. We can only hope and pray that for some reason this wheel will be booted out more quickly so that we may salvage more than just 1 of the 3 days of this Memorial Day Weekend. As it presently stands, a surface storm is slated to be triggered over southeastern MA tomorrow and it will be captured underneath the upper level counterpart. Consequently, it may do a few loops and probably eventually settle just south of Cape Cod. This will place the region in a northeasterly wind which will become brisk and gusty especially along the coast. Bands of rain will migrate and rotate across the area. It actually appears that the steadiest and heaviest rain will occur farther northwest of the storm center with just showers over the Cape. The potential exists for 1-3″ of beneficial rain over much of the area with that lightest amount over the Cape and the heaviest from the Worcester Hills west and north. That will serve to cleanse the air of most of the tree pollen. As the cold frontal boundary inches into the region tonight, numerous showers and storms will be firing. Some could be strong this evening then tamer although very wet conditions with occasional lightning will occur into tomorrow morning. The rain will transition from a more convective type to a steadier rain of varying intensity the rest of tomorrow with showery rains more likely on Sunday. It will cool down through the 60s tomorrow and fail to rise out of the 50-55 range on Saturday and probably Sunday too!

Looking ahead, the storm will shift into the Canadian Maritimes so that backlash clouds and maybe a brief shower is possible on Memorial Day. Enough drying should promote increasing spells of sunshine that afternoon with high temperatures in the lower to middle 60s amidst a gusty westerly wind. Beyond that, building high pressure well such of the Northeast will send a westerly flow of warmer air into the region. It is likely to be nice and sunny with highs in the lower to middle 70s on Tuesday and 76-80 next Wednesday.

Todd Gutner will be following any severe weather this evening and will post a fresh blog and Joe Joyce will be here early tomorrow morning.

Despite the weather, I hope that you can enjoy this holiday weekend as we remember all of the men and women who died serving in the military to preserve the freedom of this country.

While Eastern MA didn’t get into any sun today, the Western half of the State did and that lead to some more dangerous thunderstorms with one that crossed the Pioneer Valley getting Tornado Warned. There has been no report of a tornado but there was a report of a funnel cloud near Whately, MA. All storms have since weakened and the rest of the night should be much quieter.

We will once again wake up to clouds and fog tomorrow morning but a stronger southerly wind should help mix out the cloud deck so that we at least see a little sunshine during the midday. Temps will shoot up into the 70s and even close to 80 for some. Along with the warmth comes the threat for more severe weather…with the greatest threat in Western MA closest to an approaching coldfront.

That front will get hung up over us on Friday and with ample moisture available, periods of heavy downpours will be likely especially in Eastern MA. Temps will also be cooling off through the 60s as winds turn to the north.

An area of low pressure will develop along the front and slowly ripple north. Depending on how close the front settles to New England will ultimately dictate how much wet weather will linger over the weekend. But as of now, Saturday isn’t looking good with periods of rain and very chilly temps in the upper 50s. The storm will lift north on Sunday and lingering showers should taper off but sun may be tough to find…highs in the mid 60s. Finally by Monday, the pattern will improve enough to get a good deal of sunshine in here but don’t expect beach weather…highs in the upper 60s max.

Yesterday’s boomers released copious amounts of rain in places especially over southern Worcester County where some locations such as Southbridge received well over 3 inches resulting in some flooding. Hail was rather widespread in many areas along and on either side of the MA Pike. Other boomers across southern NH dropped well over an inch of rain after midnight and rudely awakened some people like yours truly. Nocturnal thunderstorms are truly annoying! The accuracy of today’s forecast hinges on the placement of the backdoor cold front that introduced dramatic cooling from the ocean yesterday afternoon. Temperatures plunged up to 20 degrees in a matter of minutes in many inland locations. While it sizzled near 90 there, it never warmed up all day along the coast especially on the North Shore up into the NH Seacoast and ME where migrating fogbanks lingered. That front has stalled out over western New England to just west of NYC. It will reverse course and retrace its path as this day progresses. It appears that there isn’t much of a force to accelerate its forward march. Consequently, the prediction is quite tricky and that could yield a big bust potential pertaining to the afternoon high temperatures. For now, I will be cautiously optimistic that the layers of clouds will break up in places to enable the sun to shine through and initiate some warming even before the frontal passage. Clearly, with the eastbound front, western New England will warm up earlier with coastal areas being the last to gain some degrees. As a result, my best educated guess at this moment is that coastal areas will warm into the lower to middle 60s with 70s out in MetroWest and 80s in western New England. The wind will be floppy in direction but generally under 12-15 mph. The heated air out west will be the breeding ground of more showers and boomers later this afternoon and evening. Some of these could be strong but the parameters supporting severe weather will exist mainly from NY and PA into the Ohio Valley this afternoon. Any of this convection that blossoms out there will transit eastward into our region late today and into the evening before weakening overnight.

The warm and humid air will be locked in place from the get-go tomorrow so expect a muggy day with highs in the upper 70s to middle 80s with more clouds than sunshine. The axis of action with many showers and boomers will reside over eastern NY and western New England. The eastward translation of this moist conduit will be retarded by the evolution of a closing and deepening upper level low pressure system over the Mid-Atlantic region late Thursday and Friday. This development will produce a surface storm that is destined to make slow progress across our area through Saturday into Sunday. This is indeed a very disappointing change in what earlier on Monday had looked like a beautiful holiday weekend. I guess that I jinxed it yesterday when I stated that I hoped that I wouldn’t have to change the forecast today or tomorrow. With weather on a holiday weekend, Murphy’s Law that “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong” applies. With all of this said, it is still not a high confidence forecast just yet. It is based upon the solution of the most reliable mathematical model that we examine. There is always room for an adjustment in this scenario with perhaps a faster exit out of the area by that storm. In any event, as it stands now, I am planning on occasional showery weather through at least Saturday when highs will be in the middle to upper 50s! That is a real bummer for the so-called official kickoff of the summer season. Just remember that I am only the messenger! Memorial Day looks to be the sunniest with some patches of afternoon clouds possible and highs near 70 degrees. It’s all about timing because next Tuesday and Wednesday look beautifully sunny and warmer.

Todd Gutner posts his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

It’s been a long afternoon and evening with strong to severe thunderstorms marching across the region. Today’s highs in the 80s along with high dewpoints aided in thunderstorm development. But it was a backdoor coldfront that tipped the scales and provided the trigger needed for dangerous storms to fire up. The atmosphere is still ripe for storms so more are possible during the overnight.

Tomorrow will start out foggy and murky but sun should burn through again and temps will spike up into the lower and middle 80s. This will lead to another storm threat in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday will be another warm and humid day but the wind direction may be a little more southerly…if that occurs, temps won’t be able to climb as high and the storm threat will be much less in the afternoon. But it could get interesting later in the night as a coldfront marches in with a strong line of storms from New York State. That same front will stall over New England and a wave of low pressure will develop along it. The result will be a very wet and much cooler Friday with periods of rain.

The storm will lift out but clouds will dominate the start of the weekend along with a gusty NW wind making for a brisk feeling Saturday. But as the weekend goes on sun will be the more dominant player and temps will gradually warm through the 60s close to 70 by Memorial Day.

It’s all about location. The weather can be so different from place to place on any day at any time of the year. Today is a classic example as murky, damp even chilly conditions exist most of the day close to the coast where the fog banks may persist in varying thickness. Temperatures at the beaches will probably not exceed 60 while farther west, it will be much warmer- up through the 70s and eclipsing 80 in spots where sunshine is more prevalent. Meantime, a disturbance in the upper levels will track southeastward from NY and northern New England and set off some scattered showers and boomers later this morning into the afternoon. A wavy backdoor cold front has settled into eastern MA. It will slowly push southwestward during the day before stalling somewhere over western New England. Additional perturbations may spark more showers and thunderstorms tonight and early tomorrow before the frontal boundary begins a retreat east-northeastward tomorrow morning. Overnight lows in the 50s to near 60 will be replaced by afternoon highs tomorrow in the range of 75-85 as the wind becomes south-southwesterly at 10-15 mph. Fog should burn off but may persist over the outer Cape and the Islands where it would be cooler in the 60s to near 70. The southwesterly will freshen up to 10-25 mph on Thursday as a cold frontal boundary approaches from the Ohio Valley and NY/PA. Similar highs of 75-85 are projected for Thursday as the bands of showers and boomers close in from the west during the afternoon. Some of those storms will be heavy but I am not expecting any widespread outbreak of severe weather.

Looking ahead to the holiday weekend, as the frontal boundary shifts offshore, another wave of low pressure may form to prolong the showers on Friday and it will be much cooler with highs in the middle 60s with a northerly wind. The showers will exit offshore later Friday and Friday night so Saturday should dawn sunny and dry. However, another upper level impulse will pass through resulting in more clouds and perhaps a brief shower in the afternoon with highs in the middle 60s. A more stable atmosphere will lead to more substantial sunshine on Sunday with highs again in the middle 60s with a brisk westerly breeze. After that, the ridge of high pressure will build over the area providing lots of sunshine on Memorial Day. It will be warmer with highs in the lower 70s in the afternoon with cooler conditions along the coast due to the sea breeze. Sunny weather is destined to last through the middle of next week.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the folks of Moore, OK following yesterday’s horrific EF4 Tornado.

It’s been a very sad night in the Plains as tornadoes have been touching down all evening and the news just keeps getting worse…our thoughts and prayers are with the folks who were in harm’s way.

Closer to home we experienced a Summery day with highs clearing 80 for some. But big changes are marching in…a coldfront is sliding south from Northern New England ushering in much cooler air. As this front slips through, clouds and dense areas of fog will form overnight. We will be on the cooler side of the front tomorrow and this means a gloomy, raw day with highs in the mid 60s. Low level moisture will be trapped on the cooler side of the front so drizzle will be possible too.

The front will then lift back north of the region on Wednesday and warm and humid air will surge back in. Thunderstorms will be possible simply due to the airmass but there won’t be much of a trigger so any action that does develop will likely be isolated. However, conditions become much more favorable for thunderstorms to form Thursday afternoon as the air will be warm and humid and we’ll have a trigger…a coldfront will provide lift for potentially severe thunderstorms.

The front will slide through Friday morning with some lingering damp weather but drier air will win out by the end of the day and the start of the holiday weekend. Temps will settle into a very comfortable range of 65-70 with a lot of sunshine to kick the weekend off. The second half of the weekend is as clear-cut but at this time there aren’t any indications for much more than a few pop-up showers at worst.

I hope that you enjoyed the weekend which was highlighted by sunny mornings and cloudier afternoons. Thankfully, the showers didn’t materialize until late in the afternoon yesterday ahead of an approaching warm frontal boundary that has pushed offshore early this morning. Residual low-level moisture in the form of a low overcast will show thinning and brightening spots leading to some clearing and resultant sunshine as the morning progresses. With a warm air mass in place, the temperature will easily soar to near or slightly over 80 in most locations. As a cold frontal boundary shifts southward across northern New England this afternoon, a few spotty showers and boomers will erupt. There is a risk that a couple of storms will stray into northern or northeastern MA late this afternoon or the first part of the evening. The wind will be quite light today at 5-15 mph mainly from the west-southwest with a chance that a local sea breeze could cool off a few beaches. The ocean wind would not be as chilling as it was the second half of yesterday afternoon. That cold front is destined to cause consternation because it is unclear how far south it will settle before stalling. Presently, it appears that the coastal plain will be cooled with highs only in the lower to middle 60s tomorrow while 70s are likely in central MA and 80s in western New England. With that front in the vicinity, there is a risk that a few spotty showers and storms will be triggered mainly tomorrow afternoon and evening.

The front will retrace its path and become a warm front Tuesday night so all sections will be in the warm and humid air mass on Wednesday and Thursday. Expect highs on those two days in the range of 80-85 despite the lack of significant bright sunshine. As a cold frontal boundary approaches from the west on Thursday with an added weak wave of low pressure perhaps developing along the boundary, the showers and boomers will become more numerous in the afternoon and evening. The frontal boundary will gradually shift offshore Friday morning with perhaps a few lingering rain showers. Clearing should proceed slowly southeastward Friday so some sunshine should break out in the Boston area in the afternoon. That should set us up for a delightful holiday weekend. A zone of high pressure building southeastward from Ontario should provide a nice mass of dry air yielding abundant sunshine and a few patches of clouds. Plan on weekend highs near 70 except along the coast where a sea breeze will keep it cooler in the lower 60s. The nice sunny weather is slated to continue beyond Memorial Day with a warming trend.

Todd Gutner posts a fresh blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Clouds will be on the increase ahead of a warm front which will begin to push into New England later today and tonight. This front will help to trigger showers by the mid-late afternoon inland. These showers will spread east tonight.

Showers are moving through this evening with temps mostly holding in the 50′s overnight with a light south wind. Showers will begin to taper off after midnight. These showers are part of a warm front which will be pushing off the coast and opening the door for a warmer more humid airmass for Monday.

It will be a cloudy damp start to Monday. The warm front will push through with SW winds steering in a warmer more humid airmass into the region with highs climbing into the mid to upper 70′s nearing 80 degrees in spots by the afternoon. Clouds will begin to break and lift by the late morning, with partly sunny skies by afternoon. A cold front will sag from North to south late Monday which could trigger a few late day scattered showers or thunderstorm. I would not be surprised to see some isolated strong storms develop with the warm humid air ahead of this front.

This cold front will act as a backdoor front moving North to south, with A less humid airmass will settling in for Tuesday with temps remaining mild in the lwr-mid 70′s inland, and cooler breezes at the coast with highs in the 60′s. This front will stall right over us, with SNE being slightly warmer than NNE. This front could help to trigger a few late day showers inland…but I expect much of the day to be dry with Mostly cloudy to Partly cloudy skies.

By Wednesday, this stalled front will begin to lift north as a warm front and trigger a few more showers possible in the morning across the north. Humid air will again return to the region with temps climbing back inot the Lwr-mid 70′s in southern New England. This front will not be able to lift far north, and will be a trigger for few more scattered showers or storms later in the day. By Thursday, all of us will be engulfed in the warm humid sector behind the warm front. Highs again will be nearing 80 degrees with partly to mostly cloudy skies. A cold front will be shifting east late in the day which will likely trigger a round of some strong-severe thunderstorms in western new England. This cold front will still be pushing through Friday morning with a few lingering showers. Much cooler air will be drive in behind this front with NW winds and building high pressure for the Memorial Day Weekend. While it may not have a summery feel to the air…next weekend promises to have some nice sunshine and low humidity which will come as welcome relief after this changeable week of weather ahead.

The forecast continues to evolve with slight changes to timing of precip and temperature. It is a complex set up which will continue to be fine tuned with each coming day. Where the front is will have a direct impact on the wind direction and the temperature for any given location. Temps will be fluctuating along this wavering stalled front. Sometimes, there will be a few downpours…the timing of these can easily change in an extended forecast. So while there are a few things we will be ironing out during the week, we are confident that there will be some pretty nice weather to enjoy along the way in between the time of showers. Plus, confidence is high for good weather next weekend to kick off the unofficial start to the summer season.

Sunny to partly sunny skies for Saturday.

A nice weekend to enjoy with high pressure sliding down from Canada and remaining parked off the coast through Sunday. The jetstream is steering NW winds aloft supplying a comfortable dry airmass with fairly typical temperatures for this time of year with highs in the Lwr 70s inland, and cooling onshore winds at the coast keeping temps in the 60′s at the beaches. Sunny to partly sunny skies for Saturday, as fair weather clouds should start to pop this afternoon, and may build just enough for an isolated shower.

Clouds will fill in tonight keeping lows mild near 50 overnight. Sunday will start off with clouds. With the high off the coast and light southerly winds at the surface, it will be a mostly dry day as well. Clouds will begin to break by midday for at least a little partial sun during the afternoon. Highs again will stay in the 60′s at the coast and some Lwr 70′s inland…depending on sunny breaks. Any breaks of sun could help to trigger a pop up isolated PM shower inland.

As a trough in the northeast begins to lift away at the end of the weekend, A warm front will approach Sunday night. This could trigger a few more light scattered showers through early Monday morning. Dewpoints will rise behind this front along with warming SW winds bring temps back into the 70′s for Monday with cloudy to Partly Sunny skies. It will be brighter and warmer by afternoon as we move into the warm sector.

An upper level ridge in place along the east coast will begin to weaken and flatten over us creating a more zonal west to east flow over New England which will help to slow the weather pattern down right over us. We will find ourselves in the dreaded “Transition zone”…the place where the cool from the north, and the warmth from the south face off. It can’t be good!

Tuesday will be a warm humid day with SW winds, rising dewpoints, Plenty of clouds and highs nearing 80. A cold front will sag to the south which will likely help to trigger late day showers and thunderstorms. This front will stall over us Wednesday with showers and cooler winds off the water which could bring temps back down into the 60′s.

By Thursday, the stalled front will attempt to lift back north with a very warm and humid airmass still in place, clouds, breaks of sun with highs back into the 70′s. A low from the west will be shifting east for Late Thursday and Friday and will come with the risk of triggering more scattered showers and thunderstorms into Friday.

Looking towards the weekend there are some complications with how it will eventually playout. The Euro model has an upper low swinging a trough into the northeast, merging with the southern stream and sweeping all the humidity and showers away for a nice cooler dry Memorial Day weekend with temsp in the 60′s. The GFS has the two streams not merged until Sunday, which allows for another round of showers to ride up the coast along with a developing low to keep the risk of showers into next weekend. This would not be the ideal way to kick off Memorial Day weekend. This would be quite a stretch of cloudy unsettled weather if this all comes to fruition. We could be looking at close to a week of clouds and periodic showers and storms. It won’t be rainy the whole time thoough.

Either way, enjoy the comfortable air this weekend. Warmer, more humid times will be arriving soon. This humidity is coming with abundant cloud cover, periodic showers, thunderstorms with the occasional downpours. It is an unsettled pattern which will last though next Friday at least. The Memorial Day Weekend holds promise…but we will have to watch which way the trends are heading…

High pressure is sliding in from the NW and this will lead to more great weather. Tomorrow will be the better of the two weekend days with ample sunshine and pleasant temps near 70…just like today. There will also be some seabreezes in the afternoon keeping most coastal towns in the 60s. The high will anchor itself offshore protecting most of New England from wet weather working in from the west on Sunday. If any are to get to us they would be focused over Western New England but almost all will stay dry this weekend. With the high offshore, there will be a more pronounced onshore breeze keeping temps in the middle 60s near the coast and close to 70 inland. We may not see any rain but we will have more cloud cover dancing in from the west.

Next week we see a bit of a pattern change with unsettled conditions setting up. Warm and muggy air will work in on the backside of the offshore high. Showers will be scattered on Monday with the passage of a warmfront. Heat and humid air will surge in for Tuesday and highs should eclipse 80…there will also be a good chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Have a good weekend.

It’s a fab Friday as the sun shines brightly this morning following the warmest day since September 13. Boston’s 3:47 pm max of 82 degrees yesterday was not even close to the record of 93 which was set in 1932. We managed to capture the northern fringe of the hot air mass that scorched the upper Plains States and upper Mississippi Valley with temperatures in the range of 95-105 degrees a few days ago. It was a dramatic change out there flipping from some deep snows a couple of weeks ago to temperatures near the century mark earlier this week. It was their turn to experience the more typical seasonal New England pattern of winter directly to summer while we have been enjoying a decent amount of beautiful spring weather.

We’re down a dozen today, degrees that is from yesterday’s lower 80s, as cooler air is flowing in from Quebec on the heels of a cold front which passed across southern sections in the early morning hours. Despite its arrival, we will still enjoy refreshing high temperatures a few degrees above the average which is 67 for this date. There will not be a repeat of yesterday’s gusty westerly winds of 15-35 mph. Instead, along the coast, the brisk northwesterly wind of mostly 10-25 mph this morning will decrease slightly and veer to more northerly than into the northeast during the afternoon so some cooling back to the middle to lower 60s is anticipated there. The sunshine may become interrupted a bit from the passage of some developing small puffy clouds and a few streamers of feathery clouds this afternoon. Another weak boundary will settle southward from northern New England with little or no fanfare other than the patchy clouds. That one will be followed by yet another weak one tomorrow which will crank out a few more clouds than today. This frontal boundary may become stalled over southwestern New England tomorrow night and Sunday. It will provide a focus axis for some overrunning and a resultant increase in the clouds on Sunday. While there is a low risk of a shower with the frontal passage tomorrow afternoon, there is a slightly elevated risk of a few spotty showers breaking out on Sunday. It certainly does not show signs of any washout by any stretch of the imagination. As a zone of high pressure builds southward from the Canadian Maritimes ending up over the western Atlantic, its circulation will create a southeasterly breeze here tomorrow and Sunday followed by a more south-southwesterly wind on Monday. This keeps all coastal areas cooler through the weekend and only south-facing coastal areas on Monday. Temperatures in the coastal locations will fall back a few degrees this afternoon, rise no higher than the lower 60s tomorrow and Sunday then rise slightly to the middle 60s at south-facing coastal spots on Monday.

Looking ahead, with the approach and passage of a warm front Monday morning, the band of clouds may thin and lift out of the area leading to perhaps partly sunny conditions with a slight risk of a shower. As a stronger cold front approaches from the north on Tuesday, a much higher risk of showers and boomers is likely. If the front stays north of the MA border into Tuesday afternoon, southern New England could warm up to the lower 80s with higher humidity. Eventually, this front will drop down into the Boston area and points south leading to a shift of wind into the northeast. This means much cooler weather will roll in on Wednesday with 60s then perhaps some rain and drizzle next Thursday in the 50s as a wave of low pressure arrives.

One last tidbit: Despite the 10-12 tornadoes that caused some severe damage and a few fatalities Wednesday evening in northern TX, the very good news is that there have been only 30 twisters over the entire nation in this month of May and that is 80% below the month-o-date average!

Todd Gutner post his blog early this evening and Joe Joyce will be here tomorrow and Sunday. I shall return early Monday morning.

Have a happy and safe weekend.

Many hit 80+ today and that hasn’t happened in quite some time…the last time it happened in Boston was last Summer, September 14th…243 days ago! It won’t happen again tomorrow, cooler air is already flowing in and tonight many towns will fall back to the 40s. As we head into the weekend, high pressure will settle over us tomorrow and Saturday…this will lead to ample sunshine and diurnal puffy cumulus. There will be just enough instability for some pop-up showers in Northern New England and perhaps a sprinkle down here. Highs will be about 10 degrees cooler…around 70. Saturday will be very similar with a blend of sun and clouds, highs near 70 expect near the coast where seabreezes will keep towns in the 60s.

The highs will begin to slide east on Sunday and moisture will try to make headway into New England from the west. The high will attempt to stay strong and limit the forward progress of the moisture but clouds will increase and a few showers may sneak into New England especially out West.

Early next week, moisture will continue to close in on us from the west and also from the south…it’s a matter of time before some showers get in here and Monday looks like the day as a warmfront works up from the south. That warm front will be the leading edge of some very warm and humid air that is poised to flow in middle of next week. If it does get in here there will be a good chance of airmass thunderstorms.

We’re in the sweet spot today- located between a front to the south and another one well to the north. With a dry atmosphere in place, the stage is set for abundant sunshine although some streaks and filaments of feathery clouds may stream in as a strong jet exists over New England. Decent boundary layer mixing will transport the higher momentum down to the surface resulting in a freshening westerly wind to 15-35 mph. The gusty wind combined with a crashing relative humidity will result in elevated fire weather conditions plus there will be lots of blowing tree pollen in the air. So it’s not all good but many of you will be thrilled with the warmth as the temperatures rise to the upper 70s for the midday hour then continue to reach the peak of 80-82 around 4pm. I predict that Boston’s high will be 82 and that is the first time the temperature has reached or exceeded 80 in the city since the 81 degrees back on September 14, 2012. Many inland locations have already warmed to 80 or slightly higher this spring but coastal areas have not participated due to the many cooler sea breezy days. The warm air will be driven right to the coastline thanks to the brisk offshore westerly wind. Only a few places will be cooled a bit by the ocean and those are west-facing shoreline communities such as the outer elbow of Cape Cod and those areas facing Buzzards Bay. The high tide occurs just after 4:30pm at most east coastal beaches. The record high for today is 93 set in 1932.

The northern cold front will be pushing southward into the mountains with an outbreak of a few scattered late afternoon and early evening showers or thunderstorms. This activity will dry up and only a few patches of clouds may be seen in southern New England as the front passes through in the early morning hours. Cooler air will invade the region in its wake but it will still be delightful with temperatures near the average inland while the coast gets cooled by the development of daily sea breezes starting tomorrow afternoon. That ocean wind will become a bit more pronounced over the weekend so coastal areas will have highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s while farther inland, the readings bump up to the upper 60s to 70 or so. 1 or 2 weak ”backdoor” types of cold front will swing into the area on Friday and Saturday so Sunday will be a bit cooler than Saturday. It appears that all frontal passages will be dry and only patchy cloudiness will be seen.

Looking ahead, as the fronts combine and stall southwest of the region, some overriding moisture will eventually produce more clouds and an increasing risk of spotty showers as the new work week commences. The high pressure system building southward from the Canadian Maritimes will eventually park itself over the western Atlantic south of New England resulting in a south to southwesterly flow of air into the region. This will increase the humidity and escort a very warm air mass over us. With any breaks of sunshine next Tuesday and Wednesday, the temperatures should easily spike up to the middle 80s. There is some uncertainty with this prediction because it is highly a function of the position of a cold frontal boundary. If that front stalls across parts of northern New England, southern sections of the 6-state region will be in a zone of summery air and many of the showers and storms would fire father north and west of Boston. It is too premature to be confident of that solution at this time.

Scattered severe thunderstorms erupted across portions of northern Texas last evening. The hardest-hit town was Granbury where six people were killed. The twister struck the area around 8:30 pm and produced considerable to severe damage. Eyewitnesses report the width of the tornado exceeded a mile! A National Weather Service survey team will investigate the damage to determine its category. Early analysis suggests that it was a strong EF2 or an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Granbury is located about 73 miles west-southwest of Dallas. The same cell that devastated Granbury moved over Cleburne which is about 51 miles southwest of Dallas. That town was declared a disaster area. Parts of that region were pummeled with grapefruit and baseball size hailstones! The metro Dallas-Fort Worth area dodged the most severe activity. Prior to last night’s deadly twister and one on February 13th of this year, surprisingly, TX has had no tornado fatalities since April 24, 2007! Thankfully, the tornado count, so far, for 2013 is down about 50% versus the 10-year average! The much colder than average spring has contributed to this low count. Interestingly, from May 2012 through April 2013, there were 197 EF1 or higher tornadoes which is the lowest count in any 12-month period since 1954!

Todd Gutner will post his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

Showers and a few thunderstorms rolled through this evening just ahead of a warmfront which represents the leading edge of much warmer air which will sneak into Southern New England aloft tonight and get mixed down to the surface tomorrow leading to some very warm temps.

Skies will clear out later tonight as a west wind starts picking up drawing in much drier air. The winds will be gusty tomorrow in the wake of the front and they will be blowing offshore, coming out of the hills and warming as they descend. Temps, under bright sunshine, will climb to around 80 in the afternoon. With the gusty wind and bone dry air, the brushfire threat will be very high and pollen levels be elevated as well.

Heading into the weekend, the pattern is looking uneventful. Surface high pressure will be working in and establishing itself over the Northeast. At the same time a cold pocket of air over the Canadian Maritimes will make the air a bit unstable. The result, diurnal cumulus clouds and scattered rain showers through Northern New England especially on Friday and Saturday. But, if you have outdoor plans over the weekend all are in good shape as temps will be pleasant inland near 70…cooler at the coast with seabreezes and three basically rain-free days in a row!

Next week is still up in the air as it’s yet to be seen how strong that high will be and where it settles offshore. There is a chance it could pump in some 80+ degree temps on it’s backside it anchored SE of New England.

The cool weather of the past couple of days climaxed early this morning with temperatures plunging close to the freezing point. It was definitely colder than yesterday morning as the ridge of high pressure was poised over the region resulting in a clear sky and calm conditions which is key for premium radiational cooling. In the lowlands and valley areas, the mins were in the upper 20s to lower 30s yielding a moderate frost in places while other suburban areas had just a brief touch of frost. Thanks to the WBZ WeatherBug Network and some of our regular observers, here are some morning temperatures at or below freezing: Fiskdale 28, Pepperell 29, Townsend 29, Marlborough, NH 29, Sterling 30, Westford 31, Norwood 31, Whitman 31, Medfield 31, Pembroke 31, Salem, NH 32, Concord 32, Southborough 32 and Kingston 32.

There will be a nice warmup to the range of 65-70 today as bright morning sunshine gives way to varying amounts of clouds from near noon through the evening. As the ridge shifts offshore and frontal boundaries approach, the southerly wind will increase to 15-30 mph. That will check south-facing coastal areas to 60-63 while all other areas farther away from the ocean will range up to the upper 60s to perhaps slightly over 70. A batch of scattered showers and a few thunderstorms in western NY and western PA at 7am will be transiting eastward to be entering our area later this afternoon into the evening. As the warm front pokes into the region, the first patch of showers will occur and the cold front soon after will spawn a few more showers and boomers. Some places will escape the rain completely while a few other spots will get a brief downpour. It will be a warm first half of the night with 60-65 and a brisk wind. After that, the wind decreases and the temperature falls to 50-55 by dawn.

Tomorrow will be the pick day of the week with bright sunshine and temperatures topping out in the upper 70s to slightly past 80 degrees. The only problem will be the gusty westerly wind at 15-30 mph which will be blowing around a good deal of tree pollen. The oak pollen is becoming more of an acute allergen for many people. The next cold front will be closing in on the northern mountains tomorrow evening triggering a few showers and boomers up there. That front will press southward through southern New England during tomorrow night without much fanfare as all the showers dry up. Cooler ir will advect into the area from the north so Friday will be sunny to partly cloudy with temperatures about 10 degrees lower at about 70 for a max in the afternoon. There will be less wind on Friday. Yet another weak cold front will enter the area from the north on Saturday afternoon. It will be carrying patchy clouds and just a slight risk of a brief shower in a few spots. High pressure will be building in from the Canadian Maritimes over the weekend so that means there will be a cooling and more penetrating sea breeze restricting highs to the upper 50s to near 60 or so along the coast while deeper inland, it will warm up to 65-70.

Looking ahead, that high pressure will be building southward and strengthening south of the region over the western Atlantic. Its anticyclonic or clockwise circulation will escort much warmer and more humid air into the Northeast Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday as well. If much of the cloudiness, showers and boomers associated with a cold frontal boundary remains to the north of the Boston area, the stage would be set for highs of 84-88 on those two days. Beyond that, the frontal boundary is destined to settle south of us setting up an unsettled stretch of periodic showers and mist and a northeasterly wind driving in chilly air from the ocean the second half of next week. This long range portion of the forecast is purely speculative at this time.

Dramatic weather changes have been taking place especially over the northern Plains and northern Mississippi Valley States lately. For instance, one of my fav towns, Blooming Prairie, MN, received 18″ of snow on May 3 and sweltered through a high of 97 degrees yesterday! Parts of NE into IA sizzled in temperatures above 100. Sioux City, IA had a record low of 29 degrees Sunday morning then had the highest temperature ever recorded in the month of May at 106 degrees! How crazy is that? I pray that we never heat of that intensity here this summer or any summer!

We avoided major frost problems last night as clouds hung around only allowing a handful of communities to get down to the freezing mark. But we aren’t exactly out of the woods yet…skies are in the process of clearing and the air is still cold…thus scattered frost is likely again in the morning.

Sun will greet you early in the morning but warmer air working in aloft will create clouds and they will thicken up through the morning leading to overcast conditions in the afternoon. A warmfront will approach and pass through in the evening…ahead of it a few showers or sprinkles will be possible but along it a few heavier showers or thunderstorms are likely in the evening. The shower threat will be over by midnight as the warmfront moves north and a coldfront slides through. The coldfront will clear the coast by Thursday morning but cooler air will lag pretty far behind the frontal passage and therefore Thursday will be a very warm day with highs close to 80 with low humidity and a nice offshore breeze.

High pressure will try to work in from the west Friday through the weekend…this will lead to generally fair weather conditions and seasonable temps in the 60s at the coast and near 70 inland. There will be another cool pocket of air just east of us over the Canadian Maritimes…this will promote diurnal cumulus cloud development and the possibility of a few sprinkles especially Friday and Saturday but most of the time will be dry.

Yesterday, the National Weather Service issued a Frost Advisory effective 2am to 8am today for much of the area where the growing season had begun. It certainly seemed plausible that the air would chill down to the frost level especially in the usual vulnerable lowland locations. However, it never really got too cold last night thanks to some stubborn clouds. There was just enough moisture available as an upper level trough passed over the area to generate a layers of clouds which acted as a protective insulating blanket. Consequently, there was no frost in most of the area. The sky cleared out temporarily in some areas just before sunrise and the temperatures dropped several degrees in a few minutes but they dipped to the lower 30s only briefly in a few spots and then the clouds rolled right back in and the temperatures rose a few degrees. So it’s better safe than sorry if you took the time to protect some of your tender plants.

The cloud games are played again during the day as it appears that a changeable sky is in the works. The early morning cloudiness should break up to enable some sunshine in places. However, that sunshine will warm the air and increase the instability resulting in the development of new clouds which may release a brief shower in a few spots this afternoon after the original lobe of clouds and upper level support releases scattered showers and local downpours with hail over parts of Cape Cod first thing this morning. It will warm up to 62-64 with less wind than yesterday. The northwesterly breeze might flip to an easterly breeze and cool off some coastal areas later this afternoon. The sky will become mostly clear late this afternoon or early this evening so temperatures will fall to lows of 36-36 tonight.

Approaching warm, cold and occluded frontal boundaries will push a swath of showers and perhaps scattered boomers across the region from west to east tomorrow midday through the afternoon. The temperatures will be slightly higher than today with middle 60s rather common. Despite the passage of the cold front, it will be warm on Thursday with sunshine warming the air to 75-80 degrees. After that, another cold front will sag southward from northern New England early Friday. This will pass without any fanfare and result in slightly cooler conditions with some sunshine on Friday. Yet another boundary will follow the same route on Saturday and this will introduce some patches of clouds and a good shot of a sea breeze through Sunday as high pressure builds down along the coast from the Northeast. As the high pressure settles southward out over the western Atlantic and strengthens, the clockwise flow will capture the summer-like air in the middle of the nation and escort it into New England next Tuesday and Wednesday. It could easily be in the 85-90 range on those days with high humidity. As the heat is introduced, we may get some showers and boomers on Monday with the passage of a warm front.

Here is an interesting stat regarding temperatures across this nation: According to The Weather Channel, there have been 2,122 more record lows than record highs so far this year. The actual count is 6,269 record lows and 4147 record highs as of early this morning! There have been no record lows or highs in Boston so far this season. I hope that we do NOT get any record highs this summer!

A bit of wind and a deck of clouds are keeping temps close to 50 degrees this evening but later tonight, skies will clear and the wind will settle and temps will take a dip. By morning they will settle down into the 30s and scattered frost is likely across the countryside. Most susceptible locals are away from the coast and outside of urban areas and in low-lying areas like river and stream valleys. Best advice is to bring in potted plants and cover others that are already in the ground.

After the chilly and frosty start, tomorrow will be another Autumn like day with highs close to 60 and that crisp feel despite the sunshine.

The chill will begin to retreat on Wednesday as warmer air from the west starts migrating east. It will first work in higher in the atmosphere…this will create an increase in clouds during the day and scattered showers will break out by evening as well. Surface temps will be on the rise Wednesday night and a surface coldfront will pass through early Thursday morning. The cooler air will lag pretty far behind the front giving temps on Thursday the opportunity to climb well into the 70s and perhaps even touch 80 degrees.

The warm up will be brief as a cooler airmass ruled by high surface pressure will build in Friday and through the upcoming weekend. At this time, temps appear to be fairly normal near 70 and raindrops should be tough to come by.

The temperatures will be a few degrees below the average today and close to average tomorrow with much warmer weather slated for the second half of the week.

After a changeable weekend highlighted by a spell of heavy rain up to 1-2″ over southeastern MA and some nice sunshine in many areas for a few hours on Mother’s Day, cooler air arrived last night. The temperatures will be a few degrees below the average today and close to average tomorrow with much warmer weather slated for the second half of the week. The average highs for this time of the year are 65-67. Expect highs near or slightly over 60 today then up to 63-66 tomorrow, upper 60s on Wednesday and middle to upper 70s the second half of the week.

A chilly airmass arrived last night and it will govern the area through tomorrow night. The center of the high pressure associated with this will track to the south of New England but the ridge will pass overhead tonight. Consequently, the core of the cold will transit through tonight and the National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for much of the area from 2am to 8am tomorrow. Protect those tender plants especially if you live in a more vulnerable low-lying location. The larger urban centers will not be a so cold tonight with lows in the upper 30s to middle 40s. Before that happens, we will enjoy a delightful day today with bright sunshine in a sky which will feature a few passing small puffy clouds later this morning and afternoon. There are lots of clouds over the Berkshires into northwestern Worcester County early this morning but a drying trend in the atmosphere suggests that many of those will disappear and only a few will form elsewhere during the day. The westerly wind will be brisk at times with gusts up to 16-28 mph. After that frosty start in places tomorrow morning, a repeat sky condition is anticipated meaning just a few clouds during the day.

Looking ahead, a warm frontal boundary will push a cargo of clouds into the region during Wednesday after a sunny start early in the day. Showers and a few thunderstorms associated with this front will arrive later in the day mainly during the evening here in eastern sections. A cold frontal boundary will quickly take over the warm front and pass offshore by daybreak on Thursday. Despite the passage of the cold frontal boundary, the air aloft will remain warm and the surface will warm up nicely as well on Thursday and Friday. Another weak cold frontal boundary will pass through Friday afternoon with little or no fanfare meaning it should remain dry. The boundary will probably stall somewhere south of the region down into the Mid-Atlantic States this weekend and we will enjoy basically sunny weather on Saturday with more cloudiness showing up on Sunday especially over southwestern New England where a couple of showers may occur that afternoon. There is no real hot weather in sight at this time. YAY!

Todd Gutner publishes his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

I expect this clearing line to continue to work itself west to east during the day with brightening skies, sun and clouds in place for the afternoon. Clouds will linger longer across SE MA and the Cape & Islands. With the increasing susnhine, temps will climb inot the upper 60's to near 70.

Another weak front will push through tonight, sweep away all the humidity and usher in a significant cool shot of air from the Great Lakes into the Northeast. Lows will fall into the 30′s in the burbs with clearing skies tonight. Lows will hold in the 40′s downtown with diminishing wind. Sunshine on Monday, with significant cold air advection diving into the Northeast with a trough in place across the Northeast. Cool air aloft will help for building daytime cumulus. Highs on Monday will be below average with highs only in the 50′s to near 60 with sunny to partly sunny skies and a breezy WSW wind.

Monday night will be quite chilly for this time of year. A freeze watch is in affect for much of SNE away from the coast. Some areas across NY, & PA will be dealing with a more significant frost and freeze with cold air fully entrenched across the Appalachian valleys. In New England it appear the best chance of a frost/freeze will be in our NW valleys…but I would not be surprised to see a few frosty spots from Bedford to Norwood to Taunton early Tuesday morning. This kind of cold can be a killing frost to the buds on some fruit trees so it is something farmers will be watching closely. You will wont to bring in any plotted plants if you live in these cold areas

Building high pressure for Tuesday with sunshine and seasonally cool temps in the upper 50′s and Lwr-mid 60′s. Temps will start to warm on Wednesday as the trough lifts out of the northeast back into the 60′s nearing 70. Clouds will increas in the afternoon ahead of a warm front. There will be a flatter flow to the jetstream for the middle to end of the week which will allow warmer air to flood back into New England with temps climbing back into the 70′s for many inland areas with a warming trend into next weekend.

There a few questions in the extended forecast as we have a few weak fronts which could trigger a few showers from time to time and a wind shift. We will have to track a wave of low pressure riding south of New england which could provide for some cooling showers Saturday. The GFS has a warmer look, while the Euro has a cooler look…so the confidence of timing and intensity of showers…along with the temperatures remains a bit low at this point. The Euro holds onto the cooler look for the weekend…while the Warm GFS camp keeps temps in the 70′s all weekend. This will have to be watched. Either way, it looks like a great stretch of weather is on the way!

Happy Mother’s Day to one and all. It can be thankless exhausting work. Just know that you are the backbone to every family.

BOSTON (CBS) — Ever wonder what the beginning of the Ice Age looked like?

This is incredible video coming in from Manitoba, Canada.

Strong winds up to 80 mph Friday helped to push melting ice onshore.

This video shows the eerie creep of the advancing ice glacier.

Watch:

Not shown in this video…on Dauphin Lake…a 30 ft wall of ice formed and plowed into and destroyed six homes and extensively damaged 14 other homes.

Is this what an oncoming ice age would look like?

Fascinating watching the ice crystals moving by themselves.

Any considerable sunshine will easily spike temps to near 75, but for now I am playing it conservative with highs ranging from 70-75. We will have to watch for a few scattered light showers from time to time...but most of the day will be dry across eastern MA which should make it OK to be outdoors most of the time.

A steady flow of clouds, warmth and humidity continue to be steered up the east coast with SW winds aloft. Lots of clouds and periodic showers are helping to keep temps mainly in the 60′s.We are watching 2 batches o showers this afternoon. A steadier batch of rain with some embedded thunder is approaching the Cape & islands where it will become wet for the rest of the day. The second batch of rain is in Northern and western new England. Cloud cover and cooler temsp today will help to stabilize any big storms from forning. Still, showers will be spreading west to east late afternoon into the evening hours.

Winds from the SW will be increasing this afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front. Winds could gust 20-30 mph at the south coast. Any thunderstorm will briefly include heavy rain, small hail and the potential for gusty winds thanks to a strong low level jet which be cruising over our heads this afternoon.

The showers out west this afternoon will be weakening across eastern MA tonight which will last off and on through midnight. After midnight, I expect the cold front to be pushing off the coast and the showers to be ending. Mother’s day will start off with lots of clouds. On Sunday, another cold front will be approaching from the west which could trigger a few more scattered showers or a T’storm for the midday and early afternoon hours. Winds will be shifting to the NW with cooler drier air arriving for the end of the day with skies becoming partly sunny. Highs on Sunday will still be nice in the upper 60′s and Lwr 70′s.

A deepening trough over the Northeast will help to steer in an unseasonal shot of cold air into the region for Monday and Tuesday. Sunny to partly sunny skies with building afternoon cumulus with the heating of the day and the cooler air aloft. Highs will struggle to get out of the 50′s nearing 60. The overnights will be particularly chilly with lows dropping down to 32 or below in the NW valleys where there is a chance for frost and freeze conditions in these sheltered valleys.

The fair weather will continue through the midweek with a warmer more humid airmass developing as winds shift back to the WSW. Highs will climb back to near 70 degrees on Wednesday which will likely be the pick of the week. A warm front will approach on Thursday to trigger a few showers, and warmer temps inot the Lwr 70′s with a cold front likely to trigger a few more showers or T’;storms for Friday afternoon in the mid 70′s. Overall, the pattern flattens out allowing the warmth to build from the 15ht through the 20th. There will be a few risks of showers on the way…and the risk for showers could continue into next weekend as well.

Mother’s Day weekend is here and part of it will be filled with showers and thunderstorms…fortunately it won’t be the one most important to Mom. A very warm and humid airmass is expanding into New England tonight out ahead of an area of low pressure in the Great Lakes. The low will travel north and west of us but a trailing coldfront with action ahead of it and along it will pass through over the first half of the weekend with several rounds of showers. The first round will arrive very early tomorrow morning and will hang around through about mid-morning and while the atmosphere could literally kick-off a shower or storm at any point the is potential for some rain-free hours midday. If that happens and we get just a little sunshine a stronger line of thunderstorms will be likely Saturday evening…otherwise just another line of downpours and rumbles of thunder.

The front associated with those potential thunderstorms will clear the coast by Sunday morning however clouds will linger. A secondary coldfront will pass through midday and while there doesn’t appear to be much activity along it, a brief shower can’t be ruled out. A strengthening west wind will bring in drier air and increasing sunshine during the afternoon…so most of Mother’s Day will be dry and pleasant with a high close to 70.

Have a great weekend~!

STOUGHTON (CBS) – The National Weather Service confirmed on Friday that damage in the town of Stoughton resulted from a tornado that touched down on Thursday.

The National Weather Service survey team has concluded that a category EF0 tornado touched down at about 4:33 p.m. on Washington Street. The tornado caused damage at a Stoughton car dealership. Employees at Baystate Ford reported seeing large RV campers being picked up five feet off the ground from the wind.

Winds from the tornado were estimated to be between 70 and 80 mph. An EF0 is the weakest possible tornado on the scale.

A microburst was also confirmed about a half-mile away from the tornado zone.

That microburst produced 60 mph winds, which flattened trees in the area.

A microbust is a strong shaft of wind coming from the base of the cloud which hits the ground and causes straight-line wind damage. Damage patterns are different from those of a tornado, which are more circular.

The National Weather Service says cold air tornadoes don’t typically touch down, and the atmospheric setup on Thursday was not one that would normally spawn severe weather.

After yesterday’s changeable weather of fog to showers to sunshine to thunderstorms to possible funnel clouds and perhaps one brief touchdown, tranquility will reign today. We will await the official assessment from an investigative meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton on whether the damage in Stoughton was produced by a tornado or a small microburst. A review of some of the videos taken by spotters suggest that there was weak rotation and the appearance of funnel clouds. The atmospheric conditions, however, were NOT conducive for typical tornadic development so we shall see what the findings reveal today.

This morning’s dense fog is burning off quickly and the low cloudiness will also disappear from west to east during the morning commute. Bright sunshine will take over and send temperatures rapidly to the middle 70s by noon. Afternoon highs close to 80 will be common except along the coast where a sea breeze is apt to set in to cause cooling back through the 70s perhaps into the upper 60s at the coastline. There is ample moisture available to trigger some puffy cloud development from midday on but there is little support for any showers in southern New England. Way up north, there is potential for a few spotty showers and perhaps a boomer especially over the hillier areas and over the mountains. Today’s wind will freshen to 6-12 mph mainly from the south-southwest but a southeasterly direction along the coast is likely.

Part of the weekend will be changeable like yesterday and most of that will happen tomorrow when more showers and thunderstorms will enter the region from the west. A warm frontal boundary will likely set off the action in the morning followed by an approaching cold front doing the same later in the afternoon and evening. It will become rather windy and humid with highs in the middle to upper 70s assuming some sunshine materializes between the batches of showers and storms. The first cold frontal boundary will pass off the coast later tomorrow night with drier air flowing in behind. So the stage is set for more peaceful conditions on Mother’s Day. There is one problem and that is a second cold front which will push through the region at midday into the early afternoon. This feature does not contain the support of its predecessor so I am only expecting some patches of clouds with a risk of a brief shower just prior to the frontal passage. It will become breezy from the west in the afternoon as the temperatures max out near 70 degrees before turning cooler later in the afternoon.

Looking ahead, an upper level trough of low pressure will probably produce some patches of clouds Monday afternoon with highs then in the lower 60s. There is a slight risk of a sprinkle or light shower from the Worcester hills north and west. The energy in this trough will cause a storm to bloom offshore Monday night into Tuesday. Most of its cloud shield and rain will stay out over the ocean and roll up over the Canadian Maritimes and perhaps far downeast ME. Similar highs in the lower 60s are likely Tuesday followed by slightly milder weather next Wednesday and Thursday. An approaching warm frontal boundary from the west will create the next parcel of clouds on those two days with the risk of a few showers on Thursday. It remains to be seen if some real warm air surges into our area a week from today.

Todd Gutner posts his blog early this evening, Joe Joyce is here all this weekend and I shall return early Monday morning.

Have a great weekend and HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Many saw multiple thunderstorms today…some towns actually had three. The biggest threat from these storm was cloud to ground lightning and torrential rain that resulted in some temporary street flooding. But one storm a little after 4PM in the Easton and Stoughton area started rotating and many witnesses claim to have seen a funnel cloud. There was also a report of that funnel moving around some campers at a car dealership and if that is the case then we might have just seen our first tornado of the season…weak and brief.

These storms have been firing underneath a cool pocket of air and upper level storm system that will rotate north by the morning. Showers will have fallen apart by then but all this rain will result in some dense areas of fog greeting you in the morning. SW winds will stir at the surface early tomorrow and the fog will lift, sunshine will burn through and temps will soar well into the 70s and even close to 80 for some. The air will stay muggy but without a trigger showers and storms will be kept at bay.

Saturday will be a different story…stronger southerly winds will continue the flow of warm and muggy air into Southern New England. A warmfront will swing through in the morning with a brief shower following that we should bust into some sunshine with temps climbing into the 70s again. Late in the a coldfront will work in from the west and this will provide a trigger for a potential strong line of storms Saturday evening.

That coldfront will have cleared the coast early Sunday morning and drier air will work in on a nice west breeze…sun will be more dominant too leading to a pretty nice Mother’s Day with highs close to 70. A second coldfront will slide through without much activity along it Sunday evening. Behind this second front a somewhat chilly airmass will invade New England with highs in the lower 60s and overnight lows in the 40s and 30s with a chance of frost outside of Rt. 128 Tuesday morning.

Yesterday’s rainfall was very disappointing in much of the region as developing showers in the morning swiftly exited out of eastern MA. The formation of additional showers failed until the next spoke of energy arrived late in the evening. It spiked a round of showers and boomers which whipped up over Cape Cod and southeastern MA from 10-11 pm then into the Boston area up across northeastern MA from about midnight to 1am then into southeastern NH and western ME after that. The projected 1/3 to 2/3″ fell in many of those locations. Similar totals are probable today in scattered areas. A widespread blanket of 1-3″ would be wonderful to put a dent in the 4-5″ 2013 deficit but today’s meteorological setup does not favor that materializing. After Saturday’s batches of showers and storms, the total rainfall for this week will be mainly in the range of 0.75 to 1.5″ with some amounts near or over two inches across northern New England.

This unsettled, periodically wet pattern is sponsored by a mature closed upper level low pressure system approaching from the west-southwest. Its cyclonic circulation contains parcels of rainfall moving counterclockwise within this spinning top. Associated with the upper low is a pool of colder air which increases the instability of the atmosphere. With any patchy sunshine, the surface is warmed thereby fueling a more unstable environment capable of greater vertical cloud development leading to the eruption of scattered showers and boomers. These migrating storms will be moving more slowly than yesterday so a few totals exceeding an inch is not out of the question on this Thursday. These showers will be percolating not only this afternoon but also this morning. The murky conditions early this morning will improve a bit as much of the fog thins out and disappears except at some immediate coastal locations where it could fluctuate in density into the afternoon. The wind will be light all day with nothing more than a breeze up to 6-12 mph from the southeast to south. With some brightening and a few splashes of sunshine in various places, the temperatures could make a run at or even slightly exceed 70 otherwise it’s closer to 60 at te coastline.

It will all change early tomorrow as the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny giving a good boost to the temperatures into the upper 70s to touching 80 in spots. There will be a light southerly breeze up to 10-15 mph. After that, the next weather maker will be closing in on the Northeast. As the low center tracks across upstate NY, its main thrust of steadier rainfall will shoot across northern New England with showers and thunderstorms crossing southern sections. With the passage of the warm front, if there are any spells of sunshine, it will warm well into the 70s to near 80 again resulting in a higher risk of some rugged thunderstorms rumbling over the region from west to east Saturday night. Those will be associated with the first of two cold fronts passing through. The first one will move offshore by daybreak on Sunday with the second one to follow by midday Sunday. It looks like most of the support will be tagged to the first front so the second one will likely transit through without much fanfare other than some patchy clouds and a very low risk of a brief sprinkle or light shower. As a result, my confidence is increasing for the development of some decent sunshine for Mother’s Day. Expect high temperatures up to 70-75 Sunday afternoon with a brisk drying westerly wind.

Looking ahead, a healthy ridge of high pressure will create refreshing air and sunshine on Monday and Tuesday. An upper air trough of low pressure could trigger a mix of clouds Monday afternoon with a slight risk of a shower. Temperatures will max out mainly in the lower 60s both days with overnight mins in the upper 30s to middle 40s. Beyond that, an approaching warm frontal boundary from the west will send in varying amounts of clouds and a risk of a shower on Wednesday. We’ll be on the cusp of some very warm air in the 80s later next week but it is unclear at this time if it will surge strongly into our area.

Todd Gutner posts a fresh blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Muggy flow has arrived in New England and you can feel the change in the air. Dewpoints, a measure of the moisture in the air are at Summer-like levels…hence the downpours we experienced today. There is no organized area of rain within this flow but a downpour can literally pop-up at any time…conditions will remain ripe for this activity through the first half of the night.

Tomorrow will start murky but I expect a few breaks of sunshine to develop midday…this will destabilize the atmosphere…the result showers and thunderstorms will pop-up in the afternoon.

The entire storm system will lift north on Friday and low clouds will part for sunshine and very warm temps with highs in the 70s to finish up the workweek.

Over the weekend, another storm system will approach from the west…the flow will turn southerly pumping in warmth and more moisture. As the front closes in it will start to get active in the afternoon with showers and potential thunderstorms. The front will slowly work through by Sunday morning this will keep showers going through the night and a few will linger on Mother’s Day morning but the afternoon looks much drier and sunshine should pop out salvaging most of the day!

The lengthy stretch of splendid sunshiny days is now a pleasant memory. It has been advertised for a full week and, thankfully, the rain is going to materialize. Furthermore, it will be quite beneficial by decreasing the fire danger, temporarily cleansing the air of the tree pollens and providing some moisture for the lawns and gardens. Hopefully, you took the opportunity to apply organic fertilizer and lime to your lawn in the past 24 hours in anticipation of this impending rain. Scattered showers will be breaking out across the area as the morning progresses with the real deal of heavier rain arriving as some spotty downpours this afternoon and evening. The main ribbon of rain is soaking the NYC area early this morning and causing flight delays. There is some lightning and thunder down there as well and some of that action could occur in parts of our area this afternoon into early evening. Meantime, migrating fog banks are impacting travel over parts of our coastal plain this morning as visibility is changeable and reduced sharply in a few parcels of dense fog. While this is ongoing, plentiful sunshine across interior northern MA will disappear as the cloud bank advances into that region from the south. The temperatures could approach 67-70 up there before the clouds restrict a further rise while the rest of the region that is already mostly overcast will have temperatures rising just a few degrees into the range of mostly 60-65 after last night’s mild weather in the 50s.

The system responsible for the wet weather continues to spin over the mid-Atlantic region. The vigorous upper level closed low pressure system and a weak reflection at the surface is gradually lifting northeastward toward New England. Consequently, its ribbons of rain or spiraling strips of showers will pivot over us this afternoon into tonight. There will be a decrease in coverage later tonight then a redevelopment of convective showers and boomers tomorrow as breaks of sunshine provide some heating and destabilize the atmosphere as the upper low passes right overhead. Some of these showers will produce relatively brief hard downpours. Once this feature exits tomorrow night, Friday should be nicer with a mix of sunshine and some increasing afternoon clouds. Most of the showers will hold off until late afternoon or evening across northwestern New England. The next trough of low pressure rolls in to create wetter weather on Saturday. There will be some moist air feeding into this wave of low pressure which will churn across the region and exit later Saturday night. It will be booted out by an approaching strong cold front surging toward the Northeast from the Great Lakes. This front may kick off a few scattered showers on Mother’s Day. If the system keeps on trucking, sufficient dry air will arrive Sunday afternoon to produce partial clearing and some nice spells of sunshine sending temperatures to near or slightly past 70. A large zone of high pressure building in from the west will deliver dry air with plentiful sunshine and a few clouds for Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows will be in the middle 30s to middle 40s and daytime highs will reach the lower 60s.

The present breakdown on the potential amounts of rain from these next 3 events is: 0.33 to 0.66″ through this evening then another 0.33 to 0.66″ tomorrow and another 0.75-1.5″ Saturday into Sunday for a grand total of 1.25-2.75″! I am very pleased with that. How about you?

Another gorgeous day with highs close to 80 inland and 70 at the coast…this is Spring at its best! But It’s been nearly two weeks since measurable rain and for better or worse that streak is going to end tomorrow.

An area of low pressure is drifting toward the Northeast with waves of showers. The first wave will arrive on the South Coast tomorrow morning and will spiral north…several more will follow as we head into the afternoon with the steadiest band passing through tomorrow evening along a warmfront. That warmfront will swing through tomorrow night pushing warm/moist air into the region. That coupled with and upper level low pressure area will trigger lingering scattered showers and thunderstorms on Thursday. The storm will lift out on Friday only to be replaced with more unsettled weather over Mother’s Day weekend. Steady rain will be possible Saturday afternoon through the night with lingering scattered showers on Mother’s Day itself.

The omega block has provided one of the longest stretches of bright sunny spring weather that I can recall. It has been fantastic for outside work and sports activities but too cool for many at the coast. The daily wind blowing in from the cold ocean has been chilling the coast but it could have been much worse with days and days of low clouds and fog all day. The benevolent high pressure system is departing today as the block breaks down and shifts eastward. This movement will enable the arrival of a closed upper level low pressure system and its attendant surface reflection and frontal boundaries. That simply means it’s going to be raining here starting by late tomorrow morning and lasting into Thursday. Initially, the rain will likely be rather widespread tomorrow afternoon into the evening with spotty showers and isolated boomers on Thursday. This batch of rain will not erase the deficit but it will add some moisture to the dry land and decrease the fire danger as well as cleanse the air of some of the tree pollen. The last measurable rain occurred 11 days ago and that only amounted to a meager 0.03″.

As the ridge of high pressure weakens, lifts and shifts today, a band of cloudiness over Cape Cod will pivot northward into at least southeastern MA creating a partly cloudy sky while the rest of the region has nearly unlimited sunshine underneath that ridge. If you are spending some time outside, please apply the sunscreen! Light wind will evolve into a southeasterly breeze at 5-15 mph and that will once again keep the coastline cooler but not as bone-chilling as the past several days. It should warm up to the middle 60s near the ocean with east-facing coastal areas warming to 70 late in the day once the wind veers to a more southerly direction. Meantime, temperatures inland will rise up well into the 70s with readings slightly exceeding 80 mainly in western Middlesex County into northern Worcester County into interior NH. With increasing cloudiness and a light southerly breeze tonight, it will stay mild with low temperatures in the middle to upper 50s.

The first ribbons of rain will transit into the region from southwest to northeast tomorrow morning. I am anticipating the first spritzes or drops around 11am in Boston. There could be some brief intervals of heavier rain in the afternoon and evening as temperatures fall a bit in the 60s. There will probably be some fog on the South Coast and Cape Cod as rather humid air flows up across the cold ocean. The initial more widespread rain is associated with the frontal boundaries and the scattered showers and boomers on Thursday will be triggered by the upper level low passing overhead. After it exits, Friday should be partly sunny with highs in the lower to middle 70s. The next weather maker will be approaching as a disturbance lifting east-northeastward from the Ohio Valley cranks out a shield of rain and releases it across New England on Saturday. A cold front surging across the Great Lakes associated with a vigorous upper level storm will push across NY and PA Saturday night and pass eastward over our region on Sunday with another band of showers and possible boomers. The showers will end Sunday afternoon as the front shifts offshore late in the day. Plentiful sunshine with drier air amidst a brisk westerly breeze will occur next Monday with highs in the lower to middle 60s.

Todd Gutner posts a fresh blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

We are finishing up our tenth day in a row with no measurable rain to say it’s dry out there is an understatement. While our weather continues to impress we are now only two days away from getting some much-needed rain.

High pressure is still in charge of our region as it sits just offshore. We’ve seen light onshore flow through the day and that has increased the low-level moisture. This has led to low clouds and fog near parts of the coastline. We saw the clouds this morning and it took a few hours to burn off…I expect the same tomorrow morning…in fact, there’s a Dense Fog Advisory in place for SE MA through early tomorrow morning. After the fog burns off, it will be all sunshine and very warm temps too…we will range from 75-80 inland to 65-70 at the coast.

Wednesday will start dry but raindrops will spread in from the south by the end of the day as a warmfront, extending out from an area of low pressure, swings into the Northeast. There will be a pretty good fetch of moist air flowing into Southern New England and within the line of showers there will be some downpours…a solid soaking is in the cards right now. The line of showers and downpours will lift north of us Wednesday night but unsettled weather will stick around on Thursday too. The mid-level low will pass overhead during the day…this is a cool pool of air and will instability…scattered showers and potential pop-up thunderstorms during the day especially in the afternoon.

The trough will lift out offering up a dry Friday but another trough will dig in over the weekend. While Saturday will start dry, it doesn’t look like it end dry…showers will once again return during the afternoon and some steadier rain will be possible Saturday night. Mother’s Day won’t be perfect but it should be better than Saturday afternoon. A coldfront will slowly work through so scattered showers will once again be possible.

I hope that you had a great weekend. As advertised last week, it was most beautiful across northern New England where temperatures climbed into the 70s especially in the mountain valley locations. Burlington, VT checked in with a high of 81 yesterday while Boston was only 53! Did you go hiking or climbing? The mountaintops were in the clear with light breezes and the visibility was superb. Unfortunately, the black flies were thick in places too. Oh well. There is always something to spoil a nice outing. Meantime, the sea breeze was chilling over the coastal plain with highs only at 51-55 while well inland spots of southern New England warmed to 61-65. It was great for many outside work and sports activities such as the never-ending yard work that kept me busy all weekend.

The mega block is beginning to shift and break down so that is both bad and good. The bad part is that this long stretch of exquisite weather will come to a close but the good part is that we should receive some worthwhile rain of more than a half-inch. That is a start because we need much more to erase the dry conditions of the past month or more. The first installment of rain is destined to arrive Wednesday afternoon and linger as showers into Thursday. This wet weather is currently soaking the Tennessee/Ohio Valley region as a deep upper air closed low pressure system and surface reflection approach slowly. Additional rain and showers could follow next weekend as the next upper level trough of low pressure arrives from the west-southwest.

Before that happens, we’re dealing with a dreary start to this work week with low overcast and fog in many areas along and south of the MA Pike extending up into portions of northeastern MA. This will burn off as the morning progresses and bright sunshine will rule today sending temperatures higher than the weekend. It will slightly exceed 60 at the coastline ranging up to slightly past 70 farther and farther northwest of Boston. This will be repeated tonight as the low clouds and fog redevelop and perhaps extend deeper into central New England. After the morning burn off tomorrow and temperatures starting in the range of 45-50, it will warm to the middle 70s with lower to middle 60s at the coast. By the way, it looks like pleasant conditions at Fenway Park this evening as the Red Sox are back in town all week and playing against the Twins for a 7:10pm first pitch this evening.

Todd Gutner posts his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

Again the warm spots will be in western New England climbing to near 70 degrees or above. Vermont will again climb into the mid 70's. Across eastern MA, it has been a bit more of a struggle. Light onshore winds off the 48 degree water is keeping considerably cooler at the beaches with highs again in the lwr to mid 50's, while inland highs will be in the lwr to mid 60's.

High pressure remains parked off the coast tonight with the big blocking ridge remaining firmly in place over us through Tuesday. Clear skies and light winds tonight will see temps drop back down into the 30′s overnight. A touch of frost was found in many cooler low lying spots this morning from Keene to Orange to Bedford, Natick, Norwood and Taunton this morning, along with some patchy dense fog. I expect a similar occurence this evening with lows dropping to the dew-point for patchy fog to form overnight, and even the chance of a few ocean stratus clouds backing into SE MA with light SSE winds at the surface especially after midnight

Any early morning marine clouds will burn off by 10 am for sparkling bright and sunny Monday. Warm temps in western new England will shift a bit farther east with more of a southerly wind at the surface. Highs will be in the mid 70′s in the N & W. Near 70 across Metro west, and even the coast will finally start to feel a bit warmer into the Lwr 60′s. Still a light SE flow will still provide a seabreeze at the coast during the afternoon

The warming trend will continue into Tuesday with most areas in the Lwr-mid 70′s. In northern and western New England..temps will feel summer like with highs near 75-80. Skies will sunny to partly sunny as some clouds will begin to increase and stream up the coast ahead of the upper low which has been stalled in the breadbasket of the nation for the past week. The blocking pattern and upper level ridge will finally begin to break down and door will be open for the upper low to drift and meander right up to New England.

As clouds increase and thicken Wednesday, cooler temps will prevail but enough mild air will be in place to keep temps in the 60′s to near 70…warmest north. Rain should begin to spread into SNE by the afternoon with showers lingering on and off into Thursday with the upper low sitting right over us. Temps will continue to cool with onshore winds and cloudy damp conditions down to near 60 by Thursday. The upper low will be lifting out on Friday, but there will still be a few periodic showers which will last into next weekend as a cold front will be pushing through. Another significant batch of rain could come with this which will eventually transition us into a cooler period once past the 13th. By the time the rain will be ending Sunday…many of may pick up 1-2″ of rain in a 5 day stretch of weather which will be much appreciated.

There is another significant shot of cold air which come barreling in from Canada into the Plains and Great lakes and swing into the Northeast around the time of the 13-14th. It is amazing what a struggle it has been for the midwest to warm this spring. It has been a year without a spring so far! This will be winter’s final cold shot. This Cold airmass will have to be tracked. Any moisture which interacts with it will be cold enough to snow especially in higher elevations..but it does not look like much at this point…so we will see. Enjoy two stellar days with a warm up before a period of some wet unsettled weather arrives.

As we have been promising, this extended stretch of beautiful weather continues this weekend thanks to large ridge of high pressure sitting directly over us. Wall to wall sunshine this weekend with gradually moderating temperatures heading into next week. Highs will be cooler at the beaches this weekend with light onshore winds keeping temps in the 50′s. Inland will feel much warmer away from the onshore wind with highs in the lwr-mid 70′s in northern and western England, and mid-upper 60′s nearing 70+ for the Worcester hills, to Metrowest, Merrimack Valley into SNH by Sunday. Dry conditions and low relative humidity is making for elevated brush fire concerns so please avoid any outside burning while we are experiencing this abnormally dry trend.

Temps will keep warming into the mid 70′s in the north and west right through Monday & Tuesday, with temps near 70-75 across Metrowest at that time. The coast will hold mostly in the lwr-mid 60′s. Meanwhile the upper level block will begin to break down and pull away later Tuesday. This will open the door for our slowly meandering cut off upper low to shift up the coast and bring more clouds with periodic showers and even a few downpours hopefully. This rain will be great for the lawns and gardens which desperately could use some water. These showers will also help to wash away some of the pollen which has been so bad lately. Temps will hold to near 60 with the clouds, showers and east winds. Temps will likely be on the rise again back to near 70 or more by Friday into Saturday, before another front moves through with showers Sunday and cooler air to follow.

Enjoy this picture perfect weather while it lasts…there are some changes and more unsettled weather ahead.

We are a wake up away from the weekend and while temperatures have cooled, the overall pattern hasn’t changed at all. High pressure is still in charge and that means nearly 100% sunshine over the weekend. It also means warmer temps inland, away from developing seabreezes…65-70 Inland with 55-60 at the coast. The onshore flow will also lead to clumps of low clouds over SE MA but no rain at all.

Speaking of rain, it’s been eight days since measurable rain and with the pattern stuck in neutral right now there is practically no chance of it until the middle of next week. A slow moving low pressure system will migrate east from the Midwest as the blocked up pattern begins to move again. This surface low supported by an upper level cut-off low will spread rain to the East Coast which will get drawn north by a digging Polar vortex over Hudson Bay in Canada. This will lead to periods of much needed rain, and because the system will be moving so slowly, the rain will likely be spread out over two days…Wednesday and Thursday.

Have a great weekend all!

As advertised all week, today was destined to be the coolest day of the week following yesterday's backdoor cold frontal passage which produced dramatic temperatures drops of 10 up to 20 degrees in less than 20 minutes. Before the arrival of the front, some locations had the warmest day so far this season with near or slightly above 80 degrees farther northwest of Boston.

Happy Friday! As advertised all week, today was destined to be the coolest day of the week following yesterday’s backdoor cold frontal passage which produced dramatic temperatures drops of 10 up to 20 degrees in less than 20 minutes. Before the arrival of the front, some locations had the warmest day so far this season with near or slightly above 80 degrees farther northwest of Boston. It’s back to reality today and tomorrow as the chilly ocean wind blowing in from the east-northeast will rule the scene with much less impact on Sunday through Tuesday. The speed will freshen up to 10-22 mph today, subside tonight and refreshen to 10-20 mph tomorrow. Sunday’s wind direction will be more east-southeasterly at 6-12 mph resulting in higher temperatures along the coast. The omega block is essentially still in place protecting the region from any intruding systems. Within that block, a stronger high pressure system surged southwestward yesterday from the Maritimes to replace the high pressure cell that had been our friend all week. This new cell will park over the region and slightly shift south over the weekend so it will be ridged right over southern New England on Sunday into Monday. Most of eastern MA is located south of the ridge line into tomorrow so that makes us vulnerable to parcels of low clouds shifting southwestward in the low-level flow from out over the Gulf of ME. After tomorrow, much of that cloudiness will be forced southward out of the region and with a dry air mass over us, bright sunshine should be prevalent in most of the region on Sunday and Monday. It will be a great weekend for hiking and mountain climbing with few if any clouds and light winds on most of the summits even Mount Washington. Surface temperatures today will max out near 50 on outer Cape Cod ranging up to slightly over 50 on much of the rest of Cape Cod to the lower 50s near the rest of the regional coastline up to the upper 50s in Metro West to 60-64 in parts of western Middlesex County and Worcester County extending into exterior NH. Over the weekend, it will turn a bit milder tomorrow and then warmer on Sunday through Tuesday. Temperatures will range from the middle 50s along the coast to the middle 60s well inland tomorrow with a bump up to near 60 near the ocean and up to 70 or so farther inland on Sunday. Further warming to the middle 70s is anticipated for Monday and Tuesday.

Looking ahead, after Monday’s sunshine, the cloudiness will be increasing on Tuesday in response to the breakdown of the omega block and the restructuring of the jet stream. The changing steering currents are expected to propel a storm northeastward up the eastern seaboard from the Southeastern States. This system will be generated by an intensifying upper air closed low pressure circulation in the Gulf States. This feature will evolve from the present strip of rain and wintry precipitation that has been plaguing the central portion of the nation for the past few days. Record May snowfall has occurred in several states from WI, MN and IA into western MO and northwestern AR. For us, it is our first opportunity to receive some beneficial rain in about 3 weeks. With the elevated fire danger, the high levels of tree pollen and the thirsty lawns and gardens, it will be most appreciated.

Todd Gutner will post a blog early this evening and Joe Joyce will be on duty tomorrow through Sunday.

Have a happy and safe weekend.

In many past years, there has been a leap from winter right to summer without any delightful spring weather in between to enjoy. That is not the case this year. It has been so beautiful lately and I had a dream it was like this for a whole summer. WOOHOO! Bright sunshine with low humidity and 70-75 degrees would be heavenly for some but not hot enough for many others. I don't think that I would ever get bored with that either.

It just doesn’t get any better than this in early May. I don’t think that I would ever get bored with that either. All I would need to do is program the atmosphere to deliver beneficial rain 2-3 nights per week and that would be perfection. Oh well, none of that will ever happen so we have to deal put up with the changes that are dealt. One of those changes will occur late today when a backdoor cold front rushes into the region from the Maritimes and the Gulf of ME. The basic omega block is still in place and what we have is a stronger high pressure system coming in to replace the one that has been so kind to us this week. Before its arrival, it will be another exquisite early May day with similar high temperatures to the last few days. It will warm up to 60-64 along the coast before the sea breeze stalls the rise and causes a slight pullback this afternoon. Meantime, farther inland, warming to 70-74 is on tap again. Sunshine will be bright and uninterrupted until the afternoon when some increasing clouds will be noticeable. There is little support for any widespread showers to erupt along that frontal boundary but I can’t completely rule out a sprinkle or brief shower in a few spots especially over hilly areas in Worcester County westward. The front should move west-southwestward across the Boston area in the 5-7 pm time frame. Following the passage, the northeasterly wind will ramp up to 15-30 mph and the chillier air will rush in from out over the ocean. Additionally, a deck of low clouds may follow which could linger into at least tomorrow morning over eastern MA. It will cool off to the lower to middle 40s overnight with a much slower rise tomorrow morning compared to this morning.

The low cloudiness may linger at least in patches over southeastern MA through tomorrow morning while the rest of eastern MA becomes sunny. The wind will become light north and west of Boston but remain brisk over southeastern MA into the afternoon. High temperatures may only reach near or slightly over 50 on much of outer Cape Cod with lower 5os along the rest of the coastline ranging up to the upper 50s well inland to near or slightly over 60 in north central MA. The sprawling high pressure system will expand and govern the region through the first part of next week. As this is happening, the atmosphere will be warming up gradually and that supports temperatures recovering to the upper 60s on Saturday to the lower 70s on Sunday and Monday to the middle 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday. On all of those days, it will be cooler closer to the coast due to the daily sea breeze keeping the numbers mainly in the upper 50s to lower 60s in most places. Sunshine should be the winner through that period although a bit of patchy mainly thinner high cloudiness is probable from time to time. During that period of time, We’ll be watching the progression of a rather potent closed upper air low pressure circulation shifting across the Gulf Coast States. It is possible that this feature will eventually change course and begin a more northeasterly movement next week. .

Winter continues to wallop a narrow strip in the central portion of the nation. Snow and ice are falling this morning from northeastern KS and southeastern NE through western IA to southeastern MN and western WI. In the past 48 hours, snowfall amounts are 5″ in Denver, 15″ in Cheyenne to 28″ at Buckhorn Mountain, CO. Some Iowa towns have received over 8″ with southeastern MN just east of Minneapolis at over a foot! Meantime, our dry spell will last for another week. Hopefully, some of the moisture in the Plains States will evolve into a whirlpool of showery rain for us later next week. Until then, the fire danger and the pollen levels will remain elevated. Although there have been a few brush fires erupt in the past few days, the wind has remained below the 20 mph threshold for fire weather concerns. During the period of gustier winds starting late this afternoon into much of tomorrow especially over southeastern MA, the relative humidity will be higher which is a good thing. Nevertheless, the dry ground is a worrisome so other fires are probable in the days ahead.

Todd Gutner posts his blog early this evening and I shall return early tomorrow morning.

Make it a great day!

Another day with highs clearing 70 degrees away from the coast and loaded with sunshine too…nearly perfect! But change is right around the corner. An upper level storm will swirl through our coastal waters tomorrow evening sending a surface coldfront down the New England coast chilling us off for the end of the week. Before the front arrives, temps will once again climb into the 70s away from the coast with cooler 60s along the water. But late in the day, a windshift into the NE behind the front will result in rapid cooling and temps will fall into the 50s and 40s by the end of the evening. Along with the chill down, clouds will increase as low clouds spread in from the NE.

Friday will be the chilliest day in quite some time…steady NE winds will keep temps inland capped in the mid 60s and coastal towns in the 50s…clouds will gradually burn-off for developing sunshine.

High pressure will once again dominate our weekend with the same weather we’ve seen over the last week or so…lots of sunshine warm temps in the lower 70s inland and cooler but comfortable 60s along the coast with afternoon seabreezes.
