The Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett joined Gresh & Zo on Wednesday and discussed the Doc Rivers situation with the Celtics. How odd it is that a guy that’s loved as much as he is in town and that once called himself a Celtic is looking for a way out of town.

“It’s strange because, you know, here’s a guy saying one thing repeatedly, ‘I want to be in the Jerry Sloan/Gregg Popovich vein, I want to stay with one team, I will either coach the Celtics next year or I won’t coach at all’…now he’s thinking about palm trees and In & Out Burger.”

Is it a case where Rivers told the Celtics before signing his latest contract that he wasn’t interested in staying with the team through a rebuilding process?

“The discussion was had before they signed the contract, the discussion has been had regularly over the last bunch of years that this day was coming and Doc had said repeatedly that he was on board.”

At some point a decision must be made, Doc is either in or out as Celtics head coach. When does the decision get made, what’s the deadline? If Doc stays in Boston will guys be motivated to play for him knowing he was looking to get out of town?

But after Blackhawks all but sleepwalked through Monday night’s Game 3, the Bruins are prepared for a much better Chicago team looking to steal home-ice back from Boston.

“We are excited, but we have to be cautious and ready. It’s either going to be 3-1 or 2-2, so that’s a big difference. We have to be ready for a big push in the first,” said defenseman Dennis Seidenberg. “They’re obviously going to throw everything at us. They’re going to want to score the first goal, so we have to keep it tight or score the first goal ourselves.”

“We have to stay in the moment and take it game by game,” said David Krejci. “The momentum can switch so fast in the playoffs, and it’s a lot different going back to Chicago with a 3-1 lead or tied 2-2. It’s the most important game of the season, so we have to do everything we can to get a win.”

“These rounds can change in the blink of an eye. You really have to bear down and can’t let any shift get away from you,” added foward Tyler Seguin.

Nothing changed for Boston in their Wednesday morning skate, with Claude Julien rolling out the same four lines that dominated Game 3. The Bruins have benefited greatly from Julien’s third-line shuffle, with the trio of Chris Kelly, Daniel Paille and Tyler Seguin coming through with two goals in the last two games, and better overall play in general.

But to take that 3-1 lead tonight, Boston knows the contributions will have to come from all everywhere.

“It’s about everyone stepping up, not just one of the lines,” said assistant captain Patrice Bergeron. “We know they have a lot of depth on their side, so it’s something we’ve been thriving on; having a deep team. We have to make sure all lines are going.”

“We know it’s a huge game. We know they’re going to come out hard; they have a lot of character but so do we,” said Bergeron. “At this time, at this stage, its two great teams and we know this game is going to be even tougher. We have to be ready for a great game.”

As for Chicago, it looks as though head coach Joel Quenneville may put stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane together again, as he did in the Western Conference Finals against the LA Kings. Both have been held without a goal against Boston so far, and the Blackhawks have not scored a goal since the first period of Game 2.

Chicago forward Marian Hossa was absent from the Hawks morning skate on Wednesday, but is expected to play in Game 4. Hossa, who has seven goals and eight assists for the Blackhawks this postseason, was a late scratch on Monday with an upper body injury.

“He’s expected to play tonight,” Quennenville said when asked about Hossa.

The guys seem very optimistic that the Bruins are in control of this series, and discuss the dominance of Tuukka Rask in comparison to other recent goaltenders in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Do you think the Bruins have this series locked up after what you saw in Game 3?

Zolak and Sean McAdam opened the week breaking down the Bruins Game 2 overtime win in Chicago. The Bruins were dominated in the first period, but turned it on after Chris Kelly’s goal.

How big was it to have Nathan Horton playing after getting injured in Game 1? Could we see this injury again before the series ends?

How will the Bruins come out tonight and will we be forced to sit through another nail biting overtime game?

The Bruins netminder stopped 59 shots in Boston’s 4-3, triple overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final,  and was not too pleased following the loss.

He said the Bruins gave the game away, and though he didn’t say Torey Krug’s name, called his third period turnover “terrible.”

Weekes doesn’t think Rask needed to make those comments, but understands the goalie’s frustration.

“I have a lot of respect for him and his game; I think he has a great demeanor and disposition,” said Weekes. “At the end of the day, playing goal is like playing quarterback. You learn some hard lessons when you’re a younger guy, and you have to learn that you need the guys to play in front of you. You learn to manage those relationships.”

“Krug has been amazing; he’s added a new dimension to the back-end of the Bruins,” continued Weekes. “I don’t think that was right by Tuukka, and if I was partnered with him I’d tell him that much, privately. But I understand it was after the game and he was hot, but the guys read and listen to everything you say about them. So there’s a little finesse you need to have when you talk about the guys.”

Weekes also touched on possible replacements for Boston should Nathan Horton’s upper body injury keeps him out of Game 2.

The guys discussed how they think the the game will go. Will Nathan Horton be healthy enough to lace up his skates and play? If not who’s jumping up to fill in the hole?

Dan also gave his take on the Doc Rivers situation with the Celtics. Will he return to Boston or take another job with a different team? Will he coach at all if he doesn’t return to Boston?

Can The Celtics avoid becoming a middle-of-the-road team in the league?

But some costly errors and unfriendly bounces went Chicago’s way, and the Blackhawks ended up with the 4-3, triple overtime win and take a 1-0 series lead into Saturday night’s Game 2. But Bourque is confident the Bruins will bounce back, and thinks they have a great chance to win their second cup in three years.

“I thought they came out and played really well, looked very composed. They looked like a veteran team that had been there before, and I feel very good at their chances of winning this series,” Bourque told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Gresh & Zolak on Friday. “I really think they have a great chance to win that game tomorrow night and come back to Boston tied 1-1.”

The Bruins may have lost forward Nathan Horton, who left Game 1 in the first overtime with an apparent shoulder injury. Horton, who the team is listing as day-to-day, is second on the team with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) this postseason.

Tyler Seguin was bumped up to Boston’s top line when Horton left, and now might get the chance to turn around a rough postseason. Bourque thinks moving to the top line could be what the forward needs to get going — much like he did in 2011 against the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals.

“He looked pretty good when they moved him up there. He looked inspired and had some great chances,” Bourque said of Seguin. “I think it can happen; you never know with this kid. He’s so talented, and no one was expecting that much a few years ago against Tampa when he light it up for a couple games. This kind of situation could maybe get him going big-time and really make a difference for this team. Playing with (David) Krejci and (Milan) Lucic, those guys will put you in a good position to have success and maybe that’s what he needs.”

Bourque also said he isn’t worried about defenseman Torey Krug, whose third period turnover led to a Chicago goal and a big momentum swing. He said the best advice for Krug after the costly error would be to not change a thing.

“I wouldn’t want that to shake him — just keep playing the way he is, being decisive and playing with confidence,” said Bourque. “I wouldn’t want him to start thinking. We all make mistakes, just go out there and keep that confidence up.”

Gresh and Zolak have their weekly conversation with Sean McAdam and talk about the Red Sox and the Bruins. Among his Red Sox notes, McAdam says it’s doubtful Clay Buchholz will pitch this weekend in Baltimore.

This past Saturday Clay Buchholz left the game against the Los Angeles Angels with what the team called “neck tightness” and is set to miss his scheduled start on Friday. Thoughts were that the pitcher would work out this week and possibly be ready for a Sunday start against Baltimore, but that’s starting to look less likely.

“John Farrell was leaving a lot of room open for holding him back until Tuesday yesterday, acknowledged that he did feel some stiffness when he threw. Then went on to say we’re not taking any chances, we’re not rushing him, we do have the opportunity to pitch Lester on regular rest on Sunday. I mean everything points to them holding him back for the double header on Tuesday.”

Is this setback a cause for concern?

The Chicago Blackhawks are looking to end their season lifting the Cup as well, so no doubt it will be a hard fought battle.

Gresh and Zolak chat with Bruins legend Ray Bourque about the team’s run to the Stanley Cup, mixing in questions from callers for the Hall of Fame defenseman.

Gresh and Zolak started Tuesday’s show reacting to the news that the Patriots have signed Tim Tebow to a two-year deal. Word is that Tebow will reportedly be used strictly as a quarterback.

Neither of the hosts are really too keen on the thought of Tebow coming to town and they wonder why the team makes this kind of move.

“Tim Tebow is a credit to the human race, and I don’t say that flippantly,” Gresh of the newly acquired quarterback. “He walks through the door with your daughter it’s a great thing…When I heard yesterday he would be studying the tight end position, I thought alright, maybe. I’d rather see them take a project college basketball player to try there, but alright, they’re throwing something against the wall and trying to see if it sticks.”

“Then you read he’s going to be listed as the number three quarterback, which is the biggest waste of time and resources of an NFL team, unless you’re doing one thing; moving jerseys. Tim Tebow will help you do that.” Gresh continued, “If he’s just a quarterback, this is stupid, stupid, stupid.”

Gresh and Zolak then “put on the rose-colored glasses” and discussed how the newest Patriot might be able to help the team.

The Bruins now prepare to head back to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in three years, this time around they battle the Chicago Blackhawks for the Cup. For the Blackhawks it’s their second trip to the Finals in four years.

Both of these teams won the last times they made it to the Cup Finals, who will have enough to come out on top?

Sports Hub Bruins color analyst Bob Beers joined Gresh & Zo to recap the Eastern Conference Finals ahead to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Beers talks about the Blackhawks’ stacked top line, Tuukka Rask’s stellar play and Tyler Seguin’s struggles.

Daugavins was claimed off of waivers in March, and joined the Bruins to provide more forward depth. Upon arriving, he saw a very focused team with just one goal: bringing home a Stanley Cup Championship.

“The first thing (I saw) was that the guys are really serious. There is a lot on the line with this team — they want to win,” he told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Gresh & Zolak on Monday. “I saw that right away with this team.

“I know these guys can win. They work hard in practice, after practice. When I saw it in June, I knew this would be a good team to play for,” he added. “It’s a great group of guy, like a big family caring for each other. On the ice and off the ice you can see how close we are. When a guy makes a mistake there are five guys behind him to cover it up.”

Daugavins also explained his famous “roll call” video from his AHL days in Binghamton, and though he wouldn’t do one on air, hinted there could be something in the works in the near future.

Gresh and Zolak talked about how this Bruins group has evolved since the 2010 collapse, the amount of respect the Bruins are getting and the differences between the 2011 Stanley Cup run and this current run.

Is the 2010 collapse even a thought now? Didn’t winning the Cup in 2011 exorcise those demons? This is a totally different and stronger team, don’t you think?

The Bruins can sweep the Penguins and punch their ticket for their second Stanley Cup Final in the last three years, something Whitney and nearly everyone else around hockey didn’t see coming.

“It’s showed that the Bruins, once again, they just find ways to win when you’re not sure if they’ll get it done,” said Whitney. “I’ve been to a game every round, and seeing how they play as a team right now, even as a player, it’s very impressive.”

Whitney said he was “shocked” that Pittsburgh is in a 3-0 hole.

“I thought it would be similar to the Vancouver series; if Boston won it would be in six or seven games, and if they did lose they’d lose quick. It’s been the exact opposite,” he said. “By no means is the series over. I’d actually be surprised if they did sweep them just because Pittsburgh has more to give.”

Whitney also touched on the Western Conference Finals — with the Blackhawks going up 3-1 on the Kings Thursday night –and which team the Bruins would be better off playing should they advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Whitney, who will be a free agent, also said he would like to play closer to home next season, but added that with the new salary cap there is a lot of unknown for many players and teams heading into this off-season.

Gregory Campbell, Paille’s linemate on the Boston fourth line, broke his right leg blocking a shot in the second period — but remained on the ice to help kill a penalty. “Soupy” hobbled around for over a minute, helping Boston keep the Penguins off the board, and becoming a bit of a legend in Boston.

Hurley: Leftover Thoughts From Game 3

“It felt like time stopped. I saw that blocked shot and he still managed to get into position,” Paille said of Campbell. “At one point he was still in the high slot trying to block a shot. I was thinking to myself that I wanted to be there, but if I got out of position there would be a one-timer. Soupy was so strong on his feet and didn’t get out of position. We were fortunate to have a guy like that on our team to play with that kind of heart. Unfortunately we’ve lost him for the rest of the playoffs.”

After dominating the Penguins in the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh, Paille said the B’s saw a very different Penguins team Wednesday night.

“They definitely brought their game last night. Defensively they were a lot stronger to play against, they made it difficult to play around the net but we were able to battle through it,” he said. “We should be happy with the win, but we know we have a lot more to improve for the next game.”

Not many (if any) expected the Bruins to be up 3-0 on the top-seeded Penguins, but Paille said the team’s sense of urgency returned following their dramatic Game 7 comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round.

“We just learned not to take anything for granted. We were up 3-1 against Toronto and they came back, then down 4-1 in Game 7. We realized that it could be over soon, and that sense of urgency has grown back in our game. It’s great to see right now.”

Gresh & Zo opened Wednesday’s show with Sidney Crosby saying the Penguins gave Game 2 to the Bruins. The guys discuss Pittsburgh’s mentality heading into Game 3 and why the B’s have the right attitude.

Well with two games down the Bruins are headed home for games three and four up 2-0 over the Penguins. Is this really happening? Not many would have predicted this situation, but here we are.

The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy stepped in studio for his weekly visit with Gresh & Zo to talk Bruins. Dan is surprised the Bruins have gone on such a great run since being down 4-1 to Toronto in Game 7.

Gresh & Zo opened Tuesday’s show breaking down the Bruins Game 2 win over the Penguins. The guys discuss the B’s mental toughness, Brad Marchand’s big night and what’s wrong with Sidney Crosby?

Weekes gave his take on the long rest for both teams, the battle that will go down between the Bruins defense and Penguins offense, and his take on the rise of Torey Krug.

“This is an unbelievable story,” Weekes said of the Bruins’ rookie defenseman who exploded for four goals in five games against the NewYork Rangers. “You want to talk about cojones, this guy is not afraid to jump up in the play. He wants the puck on the stick and oh by the way it’s the playoffs and he’s not fazed. I think he’s really jump-started the Bruins with his ability to skate and pass the puck out of pressure, and still make plays in the offensive zone.”

Gresh & Zo opened Friday’s show ready for the Eastern Conference Finals to start. The Bruins are the underdogs against the Penguins. Will that help them?

What do they need to do to beat the Penguins? Can they stop or at least slow Pittsburgh’s electric offense? Do they need to come to Boston with the series split?

Sean McAdam, Red Sox insider from Comcast SportsNet, joined Gresh & Zo from Philadelphia for his weekly visit. McAdam touched on Clay Buchholz’s injury, John Lackey and Jose Iglesias playing third base.

After feeling more discomfort in his AC joint while throwing a bullpen session on Wednesday, Clay Buchholz has been pushed back once again. Is it time to get concerned? How should the Sox handle this?

When things get underway in Pittsburgh on Saturday, there is a chance Boston breaks up their star defensive duo of Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg. While fans never want to see those two apart on the blue line, it could cause some matchup issues for the Penguins.

“They have to concern themselves for something, because matchups are the one advantage the Bruins can seize,” said Madden. “I think Bergeron is going to center against Crosby, and that’s a rough decision because Bergeron is the best defensive center in Hockey, but he’s also Boston’s best offensive threat. So do you throw his offense out the window for the sake of shackling Crosby, which may not work because Crosby is Crosby?”

“I think Chara will play against Malkin and Neal, and the added benefit is that will keep Chara away from Chris Kunitz – who plays on the Crosby line. He finishes every check and hits hard, and would wear out Chara over the course of the series,” said Madden. “I think Chara is just about worn out. The week break benefits him more than anyone else, because at the end of the Rangers series he looked used up.”

Bob Beers On Gresh & Zo: Expect A Physical Series

Madden also had some less-than-flattering things to say about Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask.

“Tuukka Rask is an average goaltender, no better,” he said. “He isn’t a Tim Thomas, and any stats he’s put up is by benefit of the great Boston defense and a great Boston defensive philosophy in front of him. Look at how Rask played in the Rangers series; he looked like a clown act out there. The Penguins will take a huge advantage of that, no matter how (Tomas) Vokoun plays, Rask being the weak link for Boston, may decide the series.”

But Madden wasn’t done. He doesn’t think Torey Krug can keep his stellar play going against the Penguins.

“One other guy I think is going to be a weak link for Boston is Krug. He shot the eyes out of the puck against the Rangers, but he’s five-foot-nothing, (weighs) 100-nothing, and he’s going to be a liability on defense with guys like Iginla and Morrow – guys who go to the net with the passion the Bruins do.”

Madden did say he could see Jaromir Jagr rising to the occasion this series, and wouldn’t be surprised if Tyler Seguin breaks out as well.

“A guy who could win the series against Boston is Tyler Seguin. He plays great against the Penguins, and the more he plays the better,” he said. “If they get him in the top six, that is Boston’s best bet. If Bergeron can neutralize Crosby, and Seguin can come through offensively, they have a chance in this series.”

“I think that goaltending is probably a wash, defense a slight advantage to Boston — as long as they don’t put Wade Redden back in — but I think Pittsburgh has a big advantage up front just based on star power,” said Madden.

How will the Bruins counter the Penguins and their tough offense?

Will Tomas Vokoun continue to get starts in net while Marc-Andre Fleury continues to ride the bench? Will there be a move made if Vokoun struggles in the series?

On Tuesday night, Jonathan Papelbon made the familiar jog from right field (albeit a few foot over from his normal spot) to the mound at Fenway Park, a path he had blazed more than 200 times in his career. This time was different, though, as he was donning a Phillies uniform and was trying to shut down the Red Sox in the ninth, rather than preserving a Boston win.

And the home crowd booed. A lot.

Even before Papelbon sent Jonny Gomes, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz down in order, questioning of just how the fans could boo Papelbon began.

“Don’t these idiot fans know how great Papelbon was for them?”

“What did Papelbon ever do wrong to Boston?”

“The Red Sox never wanted to sign him to a long-term deal, so why boo him?”

Logically, all of those questions are fair, and the answers are all obvious. But none of them have anything to do with why Papelbon was booed.

Papelbon was booed because he is on the other team, and he was entering the game to try to beat the home team. The Boston crowd, as you might expect, didn’t want to see that happen, so they booed. They wanted Papelbon to fail so that the Red Sox could win.

End of story.

And any outrage, feigned or authentic, about the booing is disingenuous or uninformed, because it overlooks the fact that during Monday night’s game, the Red Sox played a tribute video to Papelbon. The crowd enthusiastically cheered as a sign of thanks for Papelbon’s 226 saves and his role in winning the 2007 World Series. The fans showed their appreciation, and Papelbon gave a little salute to the crowd. The fans aren’t dumb, and they know how special Papelbon was during his Red Sox tenure, and they know the team didn’t even really want to sign him when he became a free agent, and they know that Papelbon’s comments about how smart Philly fans are compared to Boston fans was just Papelbon being Papelbon.

But when he entered the game Tuesday night, it was in a situation where he was called upon to prevent the Red Sox from winning. Fans want to see the Red Sox win, so they booed. They appreciate what the guy did for six years, but in that moment, they were hoping he would fail.

He didn’t, and the Phillies won.

Bruins Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg joined Gresh & Zolak to preview the Eastern Conference Finals. Seidenberg touched on the Penguins high powered offense, playing with Zdeno Chara and the B’s young defensemen making an impact.

Seidenberg made his return on Saturday in the Game 5 series ending win after having been out since Game 7 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. How did physically after the game and how’s he feeling now? The team will get some more rest as the Eastern Conference might not start till this coming Saturday, is there such thing as too much rest in the post season?

They went on to talk about the defensive pairings and what they might look like against the Penguins. Does it really matter to him who he’s playing next to? What is it about him and Zdeno Chara that makes that pairing what it is?

CBS Sports MLB Insider Jon Heyman joined Gresh, Zo and Dan Shaughnessy for his weekly visit. Heyman touches on some decreased TV ratings in MLB, the Dodgers struggles and Alfredo Aceves’ future with the Red Sox.

The guys discussed how attendance at baseball games are down around the league and how the the NHL playoffs are beating the MLB in television rating. What’s the issue and could baseball soon be taking a backseat ride? The Red Sox take on the Yankees this weekend, but is there even any buzz about the rivalry?

After Monday’s 9-3 win over the Phillies thanks to a solid start from Alfredo Aceves the Sox sent the pitcher down. Could the Sox be hoping to trade Aceves? Is Aceves even a trade candidate?

Francona and his first-place Cleveland Indians open a four-game set with the Red Sox on Thursday night, Francona’s first time back as an opposing manager after spending eight years in the Boston dugout.

“If I said that I wasn’t going to have some emotion tonight I’d be lying,” Francona told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Gresh & Zolak on Thursday. “I don’t know what it’s going to be. The thing I’m trying to guard against is, the game is hard enough to play and I don’t want to make it harder on my players.”

“Who knows what is going to pop into my mind (when I first take the field),” Francona joked. “I hope what comes into my mind are happy memories, because there were a lot of good times here. It’s a hard job — it’s a great job but it’s a hard job and it takes a toll on you. It did on me. Being away for a year helps and it eases some of the memories that aren’t so good.”

“Coming back with the Indians, now I can look over there and one of my best friends is the manager, so I know they’re in a great place,” Francona said of the Red Sox. “There are a lot of people here I care about a lot. And I’m in a great place; I’m proud to be coming back here as a member of the Indians, so I think it works for everybody.”

“I love this group I’m with,” Tito said of his new job.

Francona said he hasn’t paid too much attention to the Red Sox as he and the Indians grow as a team. But he’s not surprised with the success his former team is having with John Farrell in charge.

“I think what’s going on now, and I said this when Farrell got hired, the glass was immediately half full. What I mean is guys like Pedroia, Buchholz and Ellsbury, there was immediate buy-in because of their respect for John,” said Francona. “I actually thought they were going to be better than people were saying, and now the way they are playing proves that.”

Francona mentioned all the fun he is having in Cleveland, which includes the team putting together their own Harlem Shake video back in March. It wasn’t something Francona was on board with at first, but was happy to look a little foolish in if it helped the team grow.

“When (Nick Swisher) came in I had no idea what he was talking about. He said we have to do this, so we talked about it for a couple days and I wasn’t very excited about it,” explained Francona. “I love the idea of team building stuff, so I figured if everyone does it and it’s not half-assed, ok I’ll get up and make an idiot of myself. I’ll tell you, doing that at 8:30 in the morning without alcohol wasn’t easy.”
