Last week, Danny Ainge said that Doc Rivers will return to coach the Boston Celtics next season. That’s not enough for Bertrand. Chris Gasper of the Boston Globe joined Felger and Massarotti during Hour 3 to talk about the Patriots and the latest news on Rob Gronkowski. The guys also discussed the start of the Rangers-Bruins series. Bruins lead the series 1-0 with Game 2 on Sunday afternoon.

In the fourth and final hour, Gasper stuck around for an extra segment to talk some Gronk and Bruins. The look at the playoff performances of Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara. “It was kind of frustrating to watch us play the way we were playing, knowing that we were capable of playing much better,” Neely said on Felger & Mazz the day after the historic victory. “Third period, you go down 4-1, you start watching the clock, and, you know, all the experiences of playing games and watching games, you realize that it becomes more and more of a daunting task to try to salvage this series. … Of course extremely pleased with the fact that these guys gutted it out and tied it up and felt good about going into overtime with type of momentum we had.”

When asked if an incredible playoff comeback from his own career compared to Monday’s game, Neely said no way.

“Someone asked me that earlier today,” Neely said. “I remember a lot of great, exciting playoff games. But to put it in comparison is tough to do, because you’re talking about Game 7. To come back from three goals in a Game 7 to win the series. That particular game, although it was an extremely exciting comeback for us, it wasn’t to keep the series alive, it was to get back into the series.

“I don’t know if you can find a Game 7 in any sport that’s had this type of situation, with that much time left in the game.”

Felger also asked Neely how gratifying it was for the organization to see its core group — Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic, David Krejci, etc. — be the ones involved in the heart of the big comeback.

“For us to see those players step up in a game like that, that’s what you hope, that’s what you expect, that’s what you’re looking for. And they delivered,” Neely said. “In Game 7 like that, for those guys to come through the way they did and get goals when we needed them in a big way and dominate in a short period of time, it shows you the character of the guys – not just those guys, but of the team. This is why, when you talk abou t a core group of guys, we’ve looked at who they are and identified that and know what they can bring to to the table.”

Felger & Mazz discussed the intense 4-3 Game 4 overtime win the Bruins pulled out in Toronto.

David Krejci netted a hat trick, including the game winner 13 minutes into overtime. Felger thinks that Krejci does a lot of the little things that other players don’t and he often gets overlooked. The guys discussed how Krejci really seems to come alive in the post season and ramp up his level of play.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will surely try and plan for Krejci in Game 5 and shut him down. What will the Leaf do?

They also discussed the play of Patrice Bergeron and the fact that he made key plays at critical times. Bergeron didn’t give up on the puck and won faceoffs at key moments in the game.

The guys went on to talk some Boston Red Sox, their bullpen, Clay Buchholz, and last night’s walk-off win against the Minnesota Twins. Today, Joel Hanrahan was placed on the disabled list again. This time he goes on the DL with a right forearm strain. John Farrell has named Junichi Tazawa the team’s closer.

In the fourth and final hour, Felger and Mazz took calls on the topics the guys covered today. Is Rondo an elite point guard? When will Seguin step up for the Bruins? Finally, we hear The Final Word with Marc Bertrand.

In just three games, Lucic has six assists, which is most in the NHL this postseason. That comes after he finished the season with seven goals and 20 assists in 46 games. Coach Claude Julien ran out of options and had to make Lucic a healthy scratch toward the end of the year to try to get his game turned around, and it looks to have worked in time for the playoffs.

While the change in Lucic’s game has been drastic, Bruins president Cam Neely told Felger and Mazz that there was no “magic moment” for Lucic.

“No I don’t think there’s really any story behind the story,” Neely said Tuesday. “He struggled, along with some of the other guys this year. I think you can look across the 30 teams when you have a shortened season, when some guys are playing and some guys aren’t [during the lockout].

“He’s got a lot of character. He’s a veteran player. He understands what he needs to do, and maybe he was trying to do too much that took him out of his element. But with the regular season ending and the playoffs starting, that gave him an opportunity to say, ‘I can kind of turn the page and just settle down and play my game,’ which he’s done.”

Neely also spoke about the atmosphere in Toronto. Though the crowds are loud and rowdy, Neely said that type of environment can help the visiting team wake up early on.

“As you can imagine, it’s been pretty crazy, especially leading into last night’s game,” Neely said. “A long time for fans up here to wait for playoff hockey, and they’re very excited about it. Obviously with the team winning one game in Boston, it gave them some more excitement and emotion. And quite frankly, it’s great to see an Original Six team like this, after being out of the playoffs for so long. The fan base here is very deep-rooted, and they love their team, and they show it.

“It’s no different than going into Montreal with all of the excitement and atmosphere there. You certainly know you’re in the playoffs. The crowd is into it, which you know is going to get the other team into it, so you better get yourself into it pretty quick as well.”

Neely also discussed what went into the decision to break up Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg in Game 2, what else went wrong in Game 2, the play of Tuukka Rask and his thoughts on the rough-and-tumble Senators-Canadiens series.

Neely said he’s not sure Eric Gryba deserved a two-game suspension for his hit on Lars Eller.

“I don’t know. I’ve watched it a bunch of times just like everybody else, and quite frankly, it certainly wasn’t interference,” Neely said. “I don’t think that the head was targeted. That’s a play that I think every defenseman growing up knows that if there’s someone coming through the middle like that looking back for a pass, then you can step into them.

“I know there’s so much concern with head injuries and how the league needs to try and take care of it and try to manage it, but it’s such a quick game out there, it’s very difficult to look at everything and say that was a suspendable hit. I think a lot of people that I’ve talked to in the hockey industry didn’t really necessarily think that was a suspendable hit.”

The Celtics face a very important summer as far as the future of the franchise, though none of their options spell out a championship in the near future.

98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Masssarotti kicked off the week talking about the future of the Boston Celtics. Celtics analyst Cedric Maxwell said on Sunday that he believes Pierce, Garnett and Rivers will all be gone next season, so what does that mean for the C’s?

“To cut to the chase I think they’re hosed,” said Felger. “I don’t think they have any way out, unless they trade Rondo, trade everyone and go to last; trade them for pennies on the dollar just to go to last place.”

“But I don’t think the owner wants to trade Rondo,” he said. “If they keep him, I think they’ll be too good (and sneak into the playoffs).”

“The worst case scenario is that everyone comes back,” said Mazz. “Pierce, I think is done as a starting player in the league that you can win a championship with. If they all come back with the same group, I don’t like that. This has gone on too long already.”

“If Garnett wants to come back, he is not toast like Paul Pierce. I think KG still has something left on the floor and value off the floor,” said Felger. “If Garnett stays and you use Pierce and Rondo to get something around those two (Garnett and Rivers), get the last little bit out of KG and then blow it up, that’s the middle play. But is that even a good option?”

There is also a rumor out there from ESPN’s Stehpen A. Smith, who said on Monday’s First Take that there are rumblings the Celtics and Clippers could begin discussing a blockbuster deal that would send Garnett and Pierce to Los Angeles for Blake Griffin, Caron Butler and Eric Bledsoe. In turn, Rivers would follow his two vets out West and man the bench for the Clippers.

Smith said basketball officials he’s spoken with say that chatter will increase over the coming days.

“I would do that,” Mazz said of the trade rumor. “You’re at least getting something back for those pieces. I think they lost that leverage by missing their window at the trade deadline. Ainge let this thing run too long. But, you’re in a situation with Pierce where you either buy him out and get nothing, or you bring him back.  You’re better off getting something for him.”

“Is (Danny Ainge) capable of a move like that; that’s what I’m curious about that,” said Felger.

They also discussed Kevin Garnett’s post game comments from the floor and the Knicks wearing black before the game to celebrate the funeral of the Celtics.

Crawford had some less than flattering things to say to Carmelo Anthony (if you read lips, it looks like it has something to do with Melo’s wife), which set the Knicks star off. Some shoves, and likely a few more profanities, were exchanged, but no punches were thrown before order was restored.

But in doing so, did Crawford wake up the Knicks? We won’t know for sure until Friday night’s Game 6 in Boston, but 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Michael Felger is none too pleased with Crawford’s actions following the game.

“If I’m Doc Rivers, if I’m Danny Ainge you know what I’m doing today? I’m calling up Jordan Crawford’s agent and telling him to get your player the hell out of here; goodbye, see you later LOSER!” said Felger. “You jackass. You clown. What are you doing? You are keeping your mouth shut and winning games, you’re not instigating or poking them.”

“The Celtics said within the last 48 hours ‘let them talk, let them do their thing. Let them put pressure on themselves’… (The Celtics have) clawed their way back into this series, and this loser, who has no idea how to win, this loser on the end of your bench is going to say something and give Carmelo Anthony more reason.”

“Doc Rivers finally said enough and sat him down, and this is the guy to give the Knicks reason — to poke that bear? What are you doing? If I’m Doc Rivers, I’m saying see you later clown.”

The series returns to New York for Game 5 on Wednesday. How can the Celtics improve the team in the off-season? Do they have to become a Lottery team or can the rebuild from the middle? Who should be the Celtics core players? The Boston Bruins playoff run begins Wednesday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs. How much momentum are the Bruins actually bringing into the playoffs? Craig Wills, Professor and Department Head of the Computer Science Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, joined Felger and Mazz to break down the Pats NFL Draft results.

During Hour 3 of Felger and Massarotti, the guys talked about the future of Tim Tebow. Today the New York Jets released Tebow. Will Tebow have a future in the NFL? Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox beat the Oakland A’s 6-5 in the series finale. The Sox took 2 of 3 games from the A’s. Jon Lester went 5.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 6 walks, 3 earned runs, and striking out 5. Why was Lester bellyaching about the umps yesterday? If the calls were consistent, what is there to complain about?

During Hour 3 of Felger and Massarotti, tonight’s NFL was still the topic. Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe feels that the Pats should be looking at the Wide Receiver position. Are the Patriots overdue to draft an impact wide receiver? Felger and Massarotti were joined by the New England Patiots newest radio play-by-play announcer Bob Socci. Finally, Mazz and The Beetle go for the fourth round of highlighter throwing at the big board to see who the Pats should inquire about in the NFL Draft.

In the fourth and final hour, the guys were still focused on tonight’s NFL Draft. Why do teams shy away from players that smoke marijuana? How will the rest of the AFC East approach the Draft tonight? Finally, it’s the Final Word with Marc Bertrand.

Currently the voice of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Socci has some big shoes to fill in replacing the great Gil Santos. But on a bigger scale, does Socci know what he’s getting into with his color man, Scott Zolak?

“I did a little scouting; I’m good friends with a couple of guys that did work with Zolak in the past and we both have connections to the Naval Academy, so I have a bit of a report on him. He’s been great with me so far. I met him when I went into the station and had a great feeling with him. He’s an energetic guy, and I’m going to try to match that energy.”

As for Zolak’s hygiene, which Felger and Mazz constantly bring up as the show following Gresh & Zo each day, Socci said “I’ll find out for myself soon enough.”

Socci was the play-by-play voice for Navy football the last 16 years, and got to know Bill Belichick’s late father, Steve.

“Not very well, but well enough to hear a lot of stories and get my broadcasts critiqued and get a football lesson now and then,” said Socci. “But I had a total appreciation for how knowledgeable he had for the game, and the kind of upbringing Bill had around football.”

What’s wrong with the B’s and what players need to step up their play? Can a team “flip the switch” as they enter the playoffs?

“I believe that events can conspire to get a team going; to fire a team up. I wouldn’t want to bet on it, I wouldn’t want to count on it, but I have seen teams (do it). Last year, Los Angeles had a good run at the end of the regular season. They had added a few new pieces to the puzzle and took off from there. But I felt better about teams I was associated with when we had some level of regular season success, played the right way, and went into the playoffs feeling good about ourselves. I don’t know how this group can feel good about themselves with a lack of cohesiveness and lack of success.”

“It’s right there for the taking, so we might as well go after it and take it. On the flipside, if we feel like somebody may need a breather, we’ll look at that too,” Neely said.

“I think what happens when you have to play that style of game is that if people leave you alone, you think you’ve kind of done your job. What happens is, when you’re facing off against, in his situation, the right wing or the right D, they’re saying, ‘I don’t want to have anything to do with this guy tonight, I’m just going to leave him alone.’ So they’re not engaging with him, and he’s gotta remember and realize, ‘OK, I have to initiate. I can’t wait for anybody to kind of get me going. I have to initiate that.’

“When he first came into the league, he was trying to make himself known, and then the veterans were like, ‘Well, who’s this kid?’ And then everybody realized pretty quickly who this guy is and what he’s all about, and then conversely they said, ‘Well OK, let’s just leave him alone and he may not make the impact.’

“So I think for Milan, he’s got to understand that he’s gotta do more initiating, and he’s gotta get back to his roots and his basics of understanding, OK, what made me successful was being physical, making a physical presence out there and having people aware of him being on the ice. And then everything else kind of follows. Sometimes I think what happens is when you feel like you’ve kind of established all of that, you think OK that’s in front now, but that’s not the case.”

Neely said with Lucic, it’s not an issue of complacency.

“Milan has to continue to remind himself: This is the way I have to play to be successful,” Neely said. “The physical part of the game comes first for him.”
