David Price Placed On Disabled List With 'Elbow Inflammation'
BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox fans will not have a chance to boo David Price on Friday night. Or for the foreseeable future.
The Boston lefty has been scratched from his start against the Kansas City Royals with elbow inflammation and placed on the disabled list, the Red Sox announced on Friday.
Rick Porcello will now get the ball on Friday, with Eduardo Rodriguez starting on Saturday and Drew Pomeranz on Sunday. Lefty reliever Robby Scott has been recalled from Pawtucket to take Price's spot on the 25-man roster.
The Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy first reported Friday morning that Price's "elbow is barking again." Shaughnessy told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand that while the timing of the injury is convenient, it looked like Price could have aggravated the elbow in his last start in Anaheim (listen to the full interview in the podcast above).
Price's tumultuous season began with the starter on the DL with a sore forearm and strained elbow, though he avoided needing Tommy John surgery. He debuted on May 29 and has gone 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 11 starts.
But Price has come under fire lately when details of his heated altercation with Red Sox color analyst Dennis Eckersley on a team plane last month came to light over the weekend. Friday would have been his first start at Fenway since those details came out.
Price's trip to the DL is retroactive to July 25, so he is eligible to return as soon as next Friday.
