Gas Bills Set To Double For Thousands Of National Grid Customers Over Faulty Meters

WALTHAM (CBS) – Thousands of National Grid customers should be prepared to see their gas bills double because of faulty meters.

National Grid says 12,000 Massachusetts customers had meters that incorrectly recorded only half of a customer's actual gas use.

Customers will not be charged for the unbilled gas they used, National Grid says, but they should expect to see adjusted bills moving forward.

"There are no safety concerns associated with this error, and as soon as we became aware of the situation, we began a process to remedy it as quickly as possible," National Grid said in a statement.

So far, National Grid workers have reprogrammed 8,800 of the 12,000 meters affected.
