What To Know Before You Register For A 'Fun Run'

MARLBORO (CBS) – "Fun Runs' are gaining popularity nationwide and it's easy to see why – there are plenty of people willing to lace up their sneakers and get sweaty for a good cause.

But the Better Business Bureau has some advice before you sign up for your next color run, obstacle course or mud run – make sure the race checks out.

The watchdog group says it's been getting complaints from around the country about fun runs that cancel on short notice, and "leave runners in the dust."

"Although it is understandable that cancellations may happen, many of these events don't offer a refund to those who have already registered and paid to run," said the BBB's Paula Fleming in a statement.

Here are some tips from the BBB about what you should do before signing up for a fun run:

-Do your homework. Look at the organization's BBB Business Profile, make sure your money goes to a worthwhile cause.

-Read the fine print.

-Contact venue to make sure event is scheduled.

-Make payment with credit card, in case you need to dispute purchase.

-Print out online confirmation of order.
