Summer Of Savings: Memorial Day Travel

BOSTON (CBS) – Summer unofficially kicks off this weekend with the Memorial Day holiday.

But if it feels like you were just dealing with snow and not thinking of summer travel, you aren't alone.

Today we're helping you get away and start summer at some of the hottest local spots… without spending a bundle.

"Here's the great news for travelers," said Brooke Ferencsik of TripAdvisor. "According to Trip Advisor Hotel Pricing and Booking we found that Memorial Day week can actually represent a significant savings compared to peak summer weeks."

Four New England spots ended up on TripAdvisor's Top 50 Summer Hot Spots list.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Start in Newport, Rhode Island, known more for their yachts than their deals.

During the summer season the average hotel room goes for nearly $500 a night.

But if you're looking to get away this weekend you could snag a spot at Gurney's Newport Resort and Marina for just under $200.

NORTH CONWAY, NEW HAMPSHIRE

The next hot destination is north - and away from the coast.

But North Conway still has plenty to offer during the summer.

"North Conway has wonderful outdoor activities with the White Mountains. So many great hiking and biking opportunities there," Ferencsik said.

And a stay at the Golden Gables Inn will cost you just $95 a night.

OGUNQUIT, MAINE

Back to the beach – Ogunquit, Maine landed at the No. 7 spot on the TripAdvisor hot destinations list.

With classic New England charm it certainly has a lot to offer.

Just a five-minute walk off the beach with great views is the Marginal Way Inn, which will cost just $130 a night this weekend compared to an average of about $240 the rest of the summer.

BAR HARBOR, MAINE

And if you're ready to really head out to an adventure, check out Bar Harbor, Maine.

It's about a 4.5-hour drive from Boston.

There, the Atlantic Eyrie Lodge is offering up some summer savings this week, with rooms at $156 night, nearly a $100 off the regular in-season price.

All summer long we'll be saving you money with Summer of Savings. Next week, find out how to make sure your kids are entertained and learning this summer without breaking the bank.
