Man With Pipe Taken Into Custody After Standoff At Hopkinton Grocery Store

HOPKINTON (CBS) – A man armed with a pipe was taken into custody after he barricaded himself inside the Price Chopper supermarket in Hopkinton Saturday afternoon.

The store was evacuated and police initially believed two armed men were barricaded inside the West Main Street store.

After about an hour, State Police said they determined only one suspect was inside.

Sources tell the I-Team the suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Todd McCabe of Worcester.

Hopkinton Police say he forced his way inside the manager's back office.

"He did have a small pipe that he was able to pry off from a piece of a chair," said Hopkinton Police Chief Edward Lee.

Police say his mother was trying to take him to the hospital because of his suicidal tendencies.

The standoff took a scary turn when the suspect called police from inside the store.

"We later received a 911 call from the suspect that informed us that he was not alone that he had two other people with him and they were armed," Lee said.

Authorities contained him in the back of the store for two hours while they brought in a negotiator. He was talked out of the store and "surrendered peacefully," police said.
