BOSTON (CBS) — Martellus Bennett has become a popular player in New England due to his lively personality off the field, but he’s also won New England over with his consistently strong performance on the field as well. He certainly put in enough effort to help the Patriots earn their eighth straight AFC East championship, the first division title for Bennett since 2009 when he was a member of the Dallas Cowboys.
Donning a Patriots AFC East champions hat, an exuberant Bennett snapped an Instagram photo in the locker room on Sunday after the Patriots clinched the division title following their 16-3 win over the Denver Broncos. It’s clear that Bennett, while he has been a part of good teams before in his career, has never experienced anything quite like the Patriots.
“Champ. Gotta keep grinding. I’ve never really been a part of something like this,” Bennett’s post reads. “My teammates. Coaches. Trainers. The fans. The city. This [expletive] has been an amazing ride so far. I appreciate all of the love and everyone investing in me not just as a player but as a person. I love y’all. Let’s keep pushing and striving for more awesomeness.”
Bennett threw in a few hashtags at the end of the post before declaring “This [expletive] is AWESOME!!!”
It had been a long time coming for Bennett’s first “hat & t-shirt day” in many years. The tight end had garnered a reputation for having internal problems with previous organizations he’s played for, but there has been nothing to suggest any issues with the Patriots. Winning a lot (and having Tom Brady throwing you the ball) can make a huge difference.
