Schools Cancel Classes Due To Frigid Forecast

MEDFORD (CBS) - As cold air moves in overnight Thursday into Friday, school districts around Massachusetts are making plans to delay opening or closing altogether.

The superintendent of Medford Public Schools made the decision early Thursday to cancel classes for Friday.

"Some people think it has to snow or has to be a big storm, but quite frankly cold and wind chill can do as much damage or even more damage, frostbite to young people if they're are out in the cold in this kind of situation," said Medford Superintendent of Schools Roy Belson.

CHECK: School Closings

Belson is worried about students getting frostbite from walking to school or standing at the bus stop.

"We think that we can afford to lose a day in December and not hurt our educational program and at the same time protect the safety of our young people," said Belson.

"It was really cold like a lot of friends have to walk to school take the bus and wait for rides and everything," said Medford student Eric Sweeney.

"I drive my children to school, but I worry about the children who might take the bus and I see some children alone in the morning and I think it'll be good for them," said Medford parent Maria Fariah.

Westwood Public Schools are planning on staying open tomorrow. Superintendent John Antonucci tells WBZ he's asked parents to use common sense before sending their kids out the door.

"So a lot of our principals are sending out reminders today, just a gentle reminder to families to make sure kids have the appropriate clothing and to bundle up," said Antonucci.

Westwood Public Schools plan to hold recess indoors Friday. Bus drivers in the district have also been told to be on the lookout for kids who may be walking to school and to pick them up even if it's not their traditional route.

Stay with WBZ for the latest school closings and delays.
