Bruins Call Up Charlestown Native Matt Grzelcyk; Place Matt Beleskey On IR

BOSTON (CBS) -- A local kid will soon be donning the spoked B for the first time.

The Boston Bruins have recalled Charlestown native Matt Grzelcyk from Providence, general manager Don Sweeney announced on Wednesday. The 22-year-old defenseman will join Boston for Wednesday's morning skate in Pittsburgh and will be eligible to play in tonight's game against the Penguins.

Grzelcyk, whom the Bruins drafted in the third round in the 2012 NHL Draft, is in his first professional season with the Bruins organization after a four-year career at Boston University. He has skated in 25 games with Providence this season, netting one goal to go with 11 assists (good for second on the P-Bruins) and a plus-12 rating (also good for second on team).

He was a two-time captain on BU, finishing his senior year with 10 goals, 13 assists and a plus-17 rating in 27 games. Grzelcyk appeared in 124 games for Boston University, tallying 26 goals and 68 assists for 94 points.

The blueliner also represented the United States in international play on three separate occasions: At the Under-20 World Junior Championships in 2014 (scoring two goals and four assists for six points as the team's assistant captain), at the Under-18 World Junior Championships in 2012 and at the Under-17 World Hockey Championships in 2011.

The Bruins also announced that the team has placed forward Matt Beleskey on injured reserve. Beleskey suffered a right knee injury back on December 3 in a win over the Buffalo Sabres, and was expected to miss six weeks.
