HealthWatch: Second-Hand Marijuana Smoke Warning

BOSTON (CBS) - You've heard of the harms of second-hand tobacco smoke but what about second-hand marijuana?

Researchers just published the first study to show that when kids are around marijuana users, not only do they inhale harmful smoke but their bodies also take up the psychoactive chemicals that produce the "high" from marijuana. This is a good reminder to parents to avoid using marijuana around minors.

Over-The-Counter Hearing Aids

Good news if you or a loved one has hearing loss.The FDA is taking steps to allow hearing aids to be sold over-the-counter, and two senators, including Elizabeth Warren, have sponsored new legislation to make them more affordable. Some hearing aids currently set patients back more than $2000.

Americans Dying Younger

The average life expectancy for Americans has fallen for the first time since 1993, from 78.9 to 78.8 years. Death rates climbed for eight of the ten leading causes of death including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and drug overdose.

It's not clear why Americans are dying younger but obesity is probably playing a large role. The United States ranks below dozens of other high-income countries with Japan having the highest life expectancy at almost 84 years.
