Keller @ Large: What Can Kids Learn From Tom Brady?
BOSTON (CBS) -- So Tom Brady yesterday became the winningest quarterback in NFL history, and is being justly celebrated as the greatest QB of all time.
But what do we – and the kids in our audience especially – stand to learn from Brady's illustrious career?
First of all, that consistency and endurance matter.
Brady ranks fifth all time, not first, in total passing yards, fourth, not first, in career touchdown passes and passer rating.
But Brady ranks first in games started among active players. And his consistently excellent performance over that record-setting run has been notable for the clutch nature of his best showings; among active players, he ranks first in comebacks and game-winning drives.
Brady may also be the single best big-name role model the NFL has ever produced.
His personal behavior has been exemplary, no DUIs, no domestic violence, composure and class in all his public interactions.
What about Deflategate, the jealous, bitter, NFL losers of the world ask? What about it?
NFL owners, furious over the consistent success of Brady and his team, forced their puppet commissioner to trump up bogus charges against Brady, and exploited their onerous managerial power to make them stick in court.
Tom Brady was an afterthought coming out of college who turned out to be the consistently best quarterback ever. His success proves that you don't necessarily need to be the best physically if you are superior mentally, that doubters and haters can be cast aside if you outwork and outthink them.
Parents, feel free to use Brady as an example to your kids.
And that's something that applies to very few of his peers.
