Keller @ Large: Wishing We Could All Sleep Like Tom Brady

BOSTON (CBS) - I guess this has been out there for awhile, but I was stunned when I saw a news item mentioning that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady goes to sleep every night at 8:30 and gets up at 5:30 the next morning.

By my count, that means Brady gets nine hours of sleep a night.

Nine hours! I don't think I've been able to rack up more than seven in a row since before my first son was born, 32 years ago.

And according to the Sleep Foundation, that's at the low end of the recommended spectrum for adults. Teenagers are supposed to get eight-to-ten hours, school-age kids nine-to-eleven.

Frankly, I'd settle for the seven if they were uninterrupted.

But I'm sure many of you can understand how unusual that really is.

For one thing, there's that middle of the night phone call from Mother Nature. My doctor tells me the trick is to avoid drinking anything after 8 p.m. Unfortunately, I'm a Bostonian, and that is not happening.

The experts suggest practicing a "relaxing bedtime ritual." Somehow, I don't think huddling in the cold waiting for Buddy the Lab to take care of business is what they have in mind.

Plus, I have to check in on the evening news. Maybe it's just me, but I don't normally find the news relaxing.

And a final rule: "Turn off electronics before bed." Does that include the clock radio at my bedside that flashes the time in numerals the size of Rhode Island?

Yes, trying to rest Tom Brady-style is a tiring exercise.

Maybe I should switch careers to quarterback?
