Manchester, NH Police Looking For Thief Who Stole 78-Year-Old Woman's Purse
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CBS) -- Police are still searching for a man they say snatched a 78-year-old woman's purse while she stood with her walker at a bus stop on Monday.
Lieutenant Brian O'Keefe said the woman was standing at Granite and Main Streets around 5 p.m., going through her purse at a bus stop, when a very quick thief snatched it out of her hands and ran.
He fled down Clinton Street before police arrived. The woman told WBZ the thief was too fast for her to get a good look at him.
"I don't know where he came from, I saw him running up Clinton Street, that's all," she said. "It was so fast, he was like a bullet."
Days later, she said she was still dealing with having her things taken, including a check she needed for paying rent.
"I don't feel any good, I'll tell ya," she said. "It's not funny when you're broke."
Police described the thief as a six-foot-tall white man wearing a black jacket and black hat and backpack. They said he was unarmed.
"Purse snatchings happen from time to time, but this is a little bit more egregious based on the fact that she was standing on her walker looking through her purse at the time it was taken," he said.
Lt. O'Keefe reminded the public to stay aware of their surroundings.
"A lot of people, whether they're looking in their purse or their cell phone, they're looking down, they are not aware of what's going on around them and it's important to do so."
They are asking anyone with information about the theft to contact them.
