Field Dedication Causes Controversy In Quincy

QUINCY (CBS) - It can be argued there is no family name more prominent in Quincy in the last century than the Creedon name.

For generations, they were public servants, veterans and educators. But then there was Larry Creedon, the Superintendent of Schools in the 70s and 80s. He resigned in 1984, after being accused of molestation.

Now, the mayor is standing by the decision to name a new athletic field at North Quincy High after the Creedon family.

"I don't have any regrets," Mayor Tom Koch said. "There is always going to be some folks that may not agree with decisions I make publicly and I respect their opinion."

While the mayor doesn't believe one bad apple should ruin a good family name, some in the city say it opens up old wounds.

"The naming of a field that is part and parcel of a high school here in Quincy is just not right," Veronica Bertrand said. "That doesn't diminish what his other members of his family contributed to this city, it doesn't at all."

Mayor Koch says he is not backing down, saying the actions of one person should not spoil the decades of public service by the rest.

"He's part of a much larger story," Koch says. "It's literally generations of the Creedon family that we are honoring."
