State Police Search For Taxi In Hit-And-Run Crash That Damaged Cruiser

BOSTON (CBS) – State Police are looking for a taxi driver who they say crashed into a trooper's cruiser in Boston early Tuesday and then took off.

The taxi hit the cruiser at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Berkeley Street at 2:50 a.m., according to State Police spokesman Dave Procopio.

"The crash also caused two other vehicles to be struck, one of them parked, before the taxi fled the scene. The crash also caused damage to a light pole and fence," Procopio said in a statement.

No one was hurt.

The chain reaction crash happened while the cruiser was trying to catch up to the taxi after it was reported to be driving erratically, blowing through traffic lights.

Police said the taxi clipped a private security vehicle, which slammed into the cruiser, causing it to hit a parked car.

The security vehicle hit a lightbox that controls the intersection's signals--and because of that, rush hour brought a slight snarl to traffic.

Crews were still working on the damaged light box at noon Tuesday as police directed traffic.

"State Police are investigating to determine the identification of the cab company whose taxi was involved," Procopio said.

Investigators searched for surveillance video in the area that may show the white taxi, which also had green lettering on it.

Metro Cabs are white with green writing, but police told WBZ-TV's Nicole Jacobs they were "pretty sure" it wasn't a Metro Cab.

Police say the taxi, which they are still searching for, is sure to be damaged.
