Keller @ Large: Breaking Down Trump's Win
BOSTON (CBS) -- With Donald Trump narrowly losing the popular vote while handily winning the electoral college, WBZ political analyst Jon Keller wondered how much of the outcome was an endorsement of Trump, how much was a cry for change for which Trump was the vehicle, and how much was Hillary Clinton blowing it?
Jon sat down with political analyst Joanna Weiss and political strategist Charley Manning to break down the results and discuss what comes next after Donald Trump was elected president last week.
Weiss said that the main point of the election was that people were disillusioned with the establishment, and Clinton didn't do enough to set herself aside from the
"I think ultimately this comes down to this was the change election, and she was not the change candidate," said Weiss. "Were it someone other than Donald Trump, I think it would have been an even easier path to victory for Republicans."
Manning said the Democratic party is devastated, having lost both houses of Congress, and governorships.
"They've been devastated all around the country, and that the Clinton people couldn't see that and sort of push him away and run their own campaign with all the resources and talent and everything they had, they made it a referendum on Obama--and guess what? Obama lost," said Manning.
Weiss said Clinton's strategy of running against the wild things Trump did and said backfired.
"She tried to run against his rhetoric, and everything he did and said made him, even more, the ultimate outsider, and I think people were looking for an outsider," said Weiss. "So he reinforced it with every percieved misstep."
Manning praised the Trump campaign on their winning election strategy.
"I can't tell you how hard it is to run, because I've worked with first-time candidates before, when you've never done it before," he said. "And then to sort of break the mold, and go after states like Pennsylvania and Michigan and Wisconsin and win them, was just an amazing strategy by he and his team."
The analysts also talked about the nationwide protests against Trump's presidency, and whether or not Trump would shed his campaign persona or denounce harassment being done in his name.
