Keller @ Large: Election Winners And Losers

BOSTON (CBS) - So who were the hidden winners and losers of this election?

Social media is all over the pollsters, but for the most part they predicted a close finish, and that's what happened. When your margin of error is four or five points and your predicted victory margins are two or three, victory can easily flip to defeat.

A better choice for losers would be newspaper editorial boards across the country, dozens of whom either endorsed Hillary Clinton or merely urged rejection of Donald Trump.

It appears most of their readers didn't much care what they thought.

And how about the Republican and Democratic party establishments, neither of whom had a clue about what so many of their constituents were thinking. The GOP leaders never really understood what Trump was tapping into; their Democratic counterparts insisted on forcing a nominee down the throats of a flock that didn't want her.

What about the winners?

Right-wing media outlets, especially the online alt-right types, are riding high today.

Here at home, organized labor, especially the teacher unions and their public-sector union allies, are feeling their oats after their decisive defeat of the charter school question, and surely looking to rally around the income tax hike that's targeted for the 2018 ballot.

And Vladimir Putin has to be feeling on top of the world right now.

Literally.

But when the dust clears, we'll all have to find a way to get along.

Or else we'll all wind up losers.
