Galvin: More Than 3 Million Expected To Vote In Election In Mass.
BOSTON (CBS) -- Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin told reporters Monday morning he was very encouraged by the turnout for early voting, and expected more than three million people to vote on Election Day in the Commonwealth.
"I'm confident in predicting that we will indeed have more than three million ballots cast in this election," said Galvin. "Which means, almost two million people voting tomorrow."
More than 1 million people have already cast their votes during the early voting period in Massachusetts, which lasted from October 24 to November 4. That number more than doubled Galvin's expectations that half a million would vote early.
In Boston, Galvin's office said, 47,909 people voted early.
The high turnout comes despite the fact that there are no state-wide elections.
Shorter-than-usual lines were expected at polls Tuesday, since a third of expected Massachusetts voters had already cast their votes.
Galvin said about four-and-a-half million people are registered to vote in Massachusetts.
