2 Men Killed When Car Crashes Into Westover Air Reserve Base Barrier

CHICOPEE (CBS) - Two men were killed when a car crashed into a barrier at the Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee late Tuesday night, authorities said.

According to Lt. Col. James G. Bishop, a Kia Soul ran through a perimeter fence just after 11 p.m., slammed into a cement barrier and burst into flames.  The driver was partially ejected.

Westover firefighters were there in less than two minutes, Bishop said.  They pulled out the driver and the passenger, but both died.

The men, who were both civilians and not affiliated with the military, have not been identified.

A spokesperson for the base told WBZ-TV there is no indication that the crash was intentional.

"Preliminary investigation suggests excessive speed may have been a contributing factor," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.  "The preliminary investigation has found no evidence that the crash was an attack on the base or terror-related."
