Supermoon, King Tides, Early Sunsets & Snow: A November Preview

And just like that, we've flipped the calendar to November. The fall season continues to fly by and before you know it, we'll be into meteorological winter (December through February).  Whether you're looking forward to the colder temps and risk of snow – the change is inevitable. So let's go over what to expect this month…

An extra hour of sleep this weekend -  Ofcourse the 60 minutes of Zzzz's comes at a cost as we "fall back" and sunset goes from 5:32 PM on Saturday to 4:31 AM on Sunday. For us early morning newsies, the end of daylight saving time certainly makes going to bed early a little easier :)

Supermoon Alert - The Full Beaver moon is also a supermoon this month – and the it's the closest supermoon in nearly 70 years! The moon won't come this close to Earth again until November 25, 2034. When is the moon full? Officially on November 14th at 8:52AM. So the night of the 13th is when you'll  want to take in this beautiful celestial sight. Let's hope cloud cover cooperates.

King Tide Flooding -  The proximity of the moon to the earth will play a critical role in the tides this month. Gravity increases when the earth and moon are closest together, which helps increase the tide.  That will result in another round flooding and splashover at times of high tide between November 12th and the 17th. Add a nor'easter or any sort of strong onshore flow to the mix and coastal flooding could be significant.

Snow - Boston's average snowfall in November is 1.3".  Last year we didn't have any in November. In fact it took until January 17th to get the first inch at Logan Airport! The beginning of the month looks fairly tranquil – but a pattern shift looks like it'll be in the cards for the Northeast for the second half of the month.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a cooler than normal stretch combined with some potential for snow towards the middle and end of the month.

Short-Term Forecast Thoughts - A warm front will push through southern New England tomorrow bringing unseasonably mild air to the region. Highs will come well into the 60s, more typical for the beginning of October. Thursday will be another mild day, although it comes with a chance of rain. As a cold front approaches from the west, downpours and even some thunderstorms will be possible Thursday evening. We'll pinpoint down the timing & keep you posted. Noticeably cooler air returns on Friday.
