Woman Dead, Teen Wounded In Dorchester Shooting
BOSTON (CBS) -- One woman died and a teenager was wounded in a shooting in Dorchester Saturday afternoon, police say.
Police Commissioner William Evans said a woman in her 30s died and a boy approximately 15 to 16 years old was injured when shots were fired in the area of 152 Washington St. Police believe the teen was the target of the gunfire.
It's currently unclear whether the victims knew each other, police said. They were walking in the same area. The teen is expected to survive his injuries, police say.
Evans said fear is evident on the faces of people who live in the area.
"It's sad. Look around here. Look how many young kids. It kills you to see these young kids, you can see the fear on their faces," Evans said. "They shouldn't have to be witnesses to this. The only way it's going to stop is if the public steps up."
Community members agree.
"We should be able to walk down the street and not have to worry about ducking from bullets and running for cover," a resident who identified himself as Mark said. "This is our community, this is where we live. If you know something, help the community out and stop this madness. These guns have got to stop."
"Most young people think that when you have a grudge with someone, you settle it with a gun," another resident named Albert said. "Someone has to die to for you you to feel better about yourself and we have to change that mentality through education."
"We're not at war, we're not in Iraq, we're not in Afghanistan. We're here in the community of Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan," one man said.
