Tom Brady: My Mom Thinks I'm Very Fast

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston

BOSTON (CBS) -- Tom Brady just may go down as the greatest quarterback to ever play the sport of football, but when it comes to running with the football, he'll never go down as the most fleet of foot.

While it's true that the 6-foot-4 quarterback has added a scrambling element to his game to help prolong his career through his late 30s, the husband of Gisele has never been mistaken for a gazelle whenever he's decided to tuck the ball and run.

Unless you're Tom Brady's mom.

"Don't tell my mom that," Brady said when told by a reporter Wednesday that the quarterback doesn't fit the traditional definition of the word "fast."

"She would totally disagree with that," Brady laughed. "She thinks I'm very fast. She's like, 'I think you're the fastest person on the field.' I say mom you're crazy, there's no way. But that's moms."

So there you have it. If you're ever in the presence of the Brady family, be sure to announce loudly that Tom is not only a nice boy but also is very fast.

Brady, who's picked up a first down or touchdown on 21 of 43 carries going back to last year, did discuss more sincerely how his ability to run to pick up first downs can really work to dash the spirits of the opposing defense.

"If there's two or three plays a game that you can make, just moving in the pocket, or sliding, or buying your receivers more time, or scrambling on third-and-2, it's just one more thing that they have to defend. Jimmy [Garoppolo] made a bunch of those when he was in early. Jacoby [Brissett] made some. It's nice to be able to do that, because it does help the team and I think it's a little discouraging for a defense when they've got you covered or they got the right call on, and all of a sudden, you know, I don't think they're preparing for me scrambling for first downs. I know they're not working on that. They're working on stopping [Rob Gronkowski], and stopping Julian [Edelman], and Danny [Amendola], and Hoges [Chris Hogan], and LeGarrette [Blount] and James [White]."

"That's not one of the top 10 things on their hit list. I think it's pretty discouraging when it happens, and hopefully we can keep it going."

So does Mrs. Brady.
