Bruins Lose To Canadiens 4-2

BOSTON -- Paul Byron scored a third-period shorthanded goal and Carey Price made 19 saves in his second start of the season as the Montreal Canadiens won their third straight game, a 4-2 decision over the rival Boston Bruins on Saturday night.

Byron scored on a breakaway to give Montreal a 3-1 lead 7:32 into the third and, after Ryan Spooner answered with a Boston goal on the same power play, Torrey Mitchell scored an unassisted goal on pure hustle to restore the two-goal lead.

Brendan Gallagher and Philip Danault also scored for the Canadiens (4-0-1), beating Anton Khudobin, playing for the injured Tuukka Rask and falling to 0-4 lifetime against Montreal.

Dominic Moore also connected for the Bruins (3-2-0), who have given up the first goal in all five games this season.

Price, who returned Thursday night after missing the first three games with the flu -- his first game since Nov. 25 of last season because of a knee injury -- wasn't severely tested as he improved to 23-8-3 lifetime against the Bruins.

The Bruins, with Khudobin pulled, had a 6-on-3 advantage with 55.6 seconds left but had only one shot on goal, Price making the save with 5.7 seconds remaining.

Mitchell scored the final goal thanks to a Bruins giveaway that saw the puck wind up in front of the net. Taking a stick to the face that caused him to head straight to the dressing room after the goal, he dove and backhanded the puck past Khudobin for his third goal of the young season.

The latest renewal of the rivalry was a spirited and sometimes chippy affair that was scoreless until Gallagher scored 11:41 into the second period.

The Canadiens had a big shot advantage well into the second period but couldn't get the puck past Khudobin, starting his second tour with the Bruins after spending two seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes and one with the Anaheim Ducks.

But the visitors broke through on a nifty in-zone passing play from Alex Galchenyuk to Max Pacioretty to Gallagher, who scored his third goal in five games.

Defenseman John-Michael Liles got caught pinching in at the left point, leading to a 2-on-1, with Alexander Radulov finding Danault for his second goal of the season with 2:16 left in the second period.

Just before the second goal, Price made a big save on a David Krejci tip.
