Middle School Student Kidnapped, Sexually Assaulted In Lawrence

LAWRENCE (CBS) – Lawrence Police will have extra patrols by city schools on Friday to ease concerns after a 13-year old was kidnapped and raped while walking to school.

Officers credit the girl with helping them make a quick arrest. She was able to provide a detailed description of her attacker and the apartment.

"Very courageous in coming forward at all and then the amount of detail," said Captain Scott McNamara.

Angel Mateo, 21, was wearing a pre-trial ankle monitoring bracelet. He was in the area he was supposed to be near his apartment. Police and the mayor would not say why Mateo is awaiting trial. They did say he is not a sex offender, but the mayor is questioning if Mateo should have been allowed to live so close to a school.

"I personally question the correlation of someone being on the street on an ankle bracelet and living that close to a school and this happened. It's only as random as those pieces of information would indicate" said Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera.

He is calling for a city review of those wearing ankle bracelets and where they live. He said he will take any concerns to the judicial system.

Mateo will appear in court on Friday.
