Couple Who Met At Route One Mini Golf Keep Giant Golf Ball As Anniversary Present

MIDDLETON (CBS) -- Route One Miniature Golf in Saugus may have closed for good, but its memory lives on in Middleton.

The course, famous for its big orange dinosaur, was a special place for John and Kelly Packowski.

That's because the two met there as teenagers on July 14th, 1985. It was love at first sight, he says.

"We saw each other across the golf course and started talking," John said. "And the rest is history. I was on the windmill, and she was on the moon part, and we sort of saw each other across the golf course."

Since then, they returned to the golf course every year to celebrate their anniversary.

But when John found out it was closing, he knew he had to have something as a souvenir. The windmill where they met was impossible to take home, so he purchased the giant golf ball that sat several yards away.

"From the road, I thought it was a lot smaller than it actually is," he said. "But it barely fit in the back of my SUV."

He put a bow on it and surprised Kelly with it on their 25th wedding anniversary last week.

It will sit next to a mini-putting green in their back yard.

"We're really excited to have it in our home, and to keep the memory alive," John said. "We'll always have a special place in our hearts for Route One Mini Golf."
