Newton North Principal: Students Wave Confederate Flag In 'Deeply Troubling Incident'

NEWTON (CBS) – The principal at Newton North High School says several students drove around school grounds waving a large Confederate flag in what he called a "deeply troubling incident."

In a letter to parents, Newton North principal Henry Turner said the incident took place Tuesday.

Turner told parents a "small group" of North students has been identified. They drove around the circle on Tiger Drive waving the large Confederate flag, Turner added.

Please know that we take this incident very seriously. Newton North is committed to creating a school community that is welcoming and inclusive for all. There are members of the North community who are deeply upset and hurt by the actions of these individuals. At North we strive to celebrate our diversity and create safe and supportive learning environments for all. Therefore, I look forward to working with our students and staff in working to repair and move forward from this incident.

The principal said that the school is "taking appropriate action," but it is not clear what that includes.
