Video Shows Bicyclist Riding Through Boston Tunnel

BOSTON (CBS) – Video captured a man biking through the Tip O'Neill Tunnel. Witnesses say the man had no place else to go than over the Zakim Bridge.

Friends Brad Anderson and Todd Pease were leaving Boston, heading north on I-93 Sunday afternoon when they spotted the man riding on a Hubway rental bicycle in the breakdown lane.

"It's so outrageous that he was doing it that it was almost funny at the same time," Pease said. "I mean it's like you can't believe someone's actually doing this."

Anderson started recording on his cellphone. "Once he realized that I had my phone up, he gave us the peace sign and smiled so he didn't seem concerned that he was in the tunnel or anything," Anderson said.

"It was more of shock because to me his was putting his life on the line by doing that," Pease said.

Hubway agrees, posting a statement on Facebook saying, "It is EXTREMELY dangerous and definitely illegal to ride a bike on 93 (or any area highway). DO NOT DO IT."

The company says anyone who is caught will have their riding privileges revoked.

"It's dangerous, you know it's funny at the time but that little breakdown area disappears as soon as you go around the corner so he's literally in the left lane going over the Zakim Bridge," Anderson said.

How the mystery rider got out, it seems like no one knows for sure.

Early Sunday morning, MassDOT says another bicyclist was spotted inside the Pru Tunnel. A State Police trooper escorted that rider off the road.
