Mass. Confirms 2 More Human Cases Of West Nile Virus

BOSTON (AP) — State public health officials say there have now been five confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in Massachusetts this year.

The Department of Public Health reported Friday that the two most recent cases were a Norfolk County resident in her 40s and an elderly man from Middlesex County. The woman did not require hospitalization, while the man was hospitalized but later discharged.

An Arlington health official says a resident tested positive for the virus, which has also been found in mosquito pools in that town and surrounding communities.

Arlington is among communities considered at high risk for West Nile for the remainder of the mosquito season. The list also includes Belmont, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Newton, Revere, Somerville, Watertown and Winthrop.

No deaths have been reported this year.
