Report: Jacoby Brissett To Start Against Texans, Garoppolo Not Expected To Be In Uniform

BOSTON (CBS) — Bill Belichick told Zolak & Bertrand on Wednesday that the Patriots could determine their starting quarterback as late as game time against the Houston Texans Thursday night at Gillette Stadium. A new report suggests that they may have already found their guy.

Jacoby Brissett will reportedly make his first career NFL start Thursday night for the Patriots, according to a tweet by the NFL Network’s Courtney Fallon. Jimmy Garoppolo “will be active, but dress as his backup,” according to Fallon.

UPDATE: ESPN’s Mike Reiss later tweeted that Garoppolo is not expected to be in uniform for the Patriots Thursday night, leaving Julian Edelman as the possible backup/emergency quarterback.

Interestingly enough, a source close to the Patriots also told Fallon that the Patriots do not plan to “dial down” the offense for Brissett and the team believes the rookie out of N.C. State “has the arm” to pull it off.

Brissett will become the third rookie quarterback of the 2016 season to make his first career start. The Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz and the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott are the other two.
