Mass. Cops Honored For Bravery At Annual Ceremony

BOSTON (AP) — Nearly two dozen police officers from six Massachusetts departments have been honored with bravery awards named for a state trooper killed in the line of duty.

Gov. Charlie Baker helped present the Hanna Awards during a ceremony at the Statehouse on Thursday.

The highest award, the Medal of Honor, went to Bourne Police Officer Jared MacDonald, who was shot and wounded in February 2015 while responding to a car fire and shooting at an apartment complex.

Several other officers who responded to the scene and helped MacDonald and another wounded person reach ambulances received the Medal of Valor.

Other award recipients were from the Massachusetts State Police, as well as the Boston, Chelsea, Tewksbury and Webster departments.

Trooper George Hanna was fatally shot in 1983 during a traffic stop in Auburn.
