Fast Moving Storm Causes Major Damage In Some Communities

JAMAICA PLAIN (CBS) -- Strong winds and heavy rain led to downed trees and power lines in some neighborhoods.

Large trees damaged cars and parts of homes on Tower Street in Jamaica Plain. Xochitl Mendez's van was among those badly damaged. She has a disability that affects her spine and back and really needs the vehicle.

"I really couldn't believe because on July 18 another tree here on the street fell on my brother's car," she said. "My brother and I live in the same place and we depend on these vehicles and the first one was practically totaled."

Residents on the street have been calling the city, expressing concern about the trees and that more may fall. The Mendez family is filing a claim with the city for damages to their vehicles.

The dry weather may be to blame in Jamaica Plain and other cities and towns that incurred damage from the storm. The drought has led to brittle branches, and barely living trees and shrubs.

"We really want the city to look at the remaining trees because this is dangerous, people can die," said Mendez. "People could have been walking there, there could have been human injuries."
